The potato was sour as a few tables all complained of the same thing was given a free desert won’t be going back

Food is second to none. Portion sizes too big for me but my family always clear their plates.

Food was lovely and came quickly, once you managed to order. Getting someone to take the orders was very slow going. It appeared that one waitress was doing all of the jobs on the floor. I hope that's not the norm as we would all come back again for the food, comfort and pricing :)

Nice pub and clean toilets with polite but slow service. Food ok with good choice but beef was very tough.Puddings very nice.

Having visited a few months ago for a fabulous game casserole I brought a group of 16 for a soup and sandwich lunch. Great friendly service so thanks to the whole team.

Brilliant well cooked food. Portion sizes are ample. Staff are very friendly. Plus the option of today's deals. Sandwiches were well portioned.

Had a good Sunday roast here. I wonder if there's a pub left in the UK that actually roasts it's own beef, rather than buying it in and warming it up. Meal was good not great. Staff were very nice, place is clean and has great parking.

I went to an 80 th birthday celebration , there were 15 of us, it’s a nice homely pub and the meal was 3 courses , every thing was first class, thoroughly enjoyed it , I recommend to every one , the chef was superb, just go if you can , brian inman .

Absolute terrible bar service learn to accept valid ID, bar management clearly need to learn what ID looks like. Seen them accept fake ID then reject valid ID clearly this pub needs looking into. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone who actually wants a good time.

Michael never lets us down. Best food for miles around at very reasonable prices.

Group lunch for 40 walking woman, the service and food were first class

I was on a night out with a group of friends just recently and we booked Shepherds Arms. Its the first time I have had a meal there. The food was excellent. I started with chicken and leek soup and then navarin of lamb. The soup was lovely and the lamb was so tender and plenty of fresh vegetables. I will definitely go there again.

The food was top class, but at a very reasonable price. House Chardonnay was only £14 a bottle. Belly pork was great, I even got some gravy to take home. For a quality meal out this place ticks all the boxes. The specials board adds even more choices. The staff were very friendly and helpful, keep up the excellent work.

My wife had Fish & Chips when she visited with a group on Tue 14 Nov and told me the Fish & Chips were the best she'd eaten. We were in the area Tue 21 and decided to call in, no booking made, but they managed to find us a table. All the staff were friendly, down to earth, and welcoming. Disabled parking right outside the door. We both ordered Fish & Chips with mushy peas, and I have to agree the food was quality. The fish was hanging over the edges of the plate. It was so fresh, bright white flaky chunks of fish, and the lightest, crunchiest batter ever! The chef came out to chat with us near the end of our meal and thanked us for our custom. It's worth paying that little bit extra for such lovely food and genuine, friendly customer service. We told them we will definitely be returning to try other dishes.

It was an impromptu visit whilst passing through the area. A quick call and a table was secured and made up for our arrival. The staff were very friendly and attentive, to us and our companion (Milo the Cavapoo). Great selection of home cooked food that satisfied us both, served promptly and considered our each and every need, even a small meat serving for the dog! We were too stuffed to make the dessert.. maybe next time! Good selection of drinks too 👌

Good old fashioned pub with really good home cooked food

We booked a table of 4 here at the end of September to celebrate my mums 81ST Birthday. She and others had previously had lovely meals and service from the chef. Well what had happened this day? It was a Saturday and we expected it to be busy. There was a function going on too. When we turned up at 12:30pm for our pre booked table no one greeted us. We walked up to the two very sad looking young ladies. Still nothing - no hello, no are you ok? I then told them that we had a table for 4 booked. We were moved to our table. We looked like we had put them out! Anyway it just got worse! Whilst stood to order a first round of drinks, the bar man just ignored us! Another guy from a table spoke to him and got served? We then ordered and told most of the beer wasn’t available- awaiting a delivery? No apology. Honestly, we eat out every week and it just simply isn’t good enough. When we were served our food it was plonked on the table, no service with a smile! The food itself was large portions - we had scampi, beef pies and fish pie. The fish pie had minimal fish and a load of rich cheese mash- not good. The beef pie was over salted. Did raise this and got this deleted from payment. We never once were asked how are meals were during the meal. Nor were we able to ask to order drinks from the table- we had to order at the bar which took ages. Not good enough again when at a ‘restaurant’. All in all we were disappointed and would not recommend. It is a real shame and had considered a large family meet there later in the year but we won’t be risking heere again. Please sort out your staff and train them !

Went for Sunday roast and arrived before more customers before 6pm so tried to order ahead of others. Took 3 attempts with 3 different people for them to take our order. Then after 30mins noticed everyone else had their food but not us. Went to ask where our meals were, hadn't a clue. The girl that took our order had lost the ticket 🤦🏻‍♀️ So our food came 45 mins after we ordered. The waitress also didn't know what meats were on the Sunday roast and I heard her telling one customer to look on the specials board to find out what the soup of the day was. Very poorly organised even though the waitress that did eventually sort out our food was very apologetic. Why didn't they realise that we were the only ones without any food and question us to see if we had ordered, especially as we'd been sat for 30mins? The food was reasonable and other meals looked good. We did question why our Sunday roast of Turkey and ham didn't come with stuffing but just Turkey dinner had stuffing?? This used to be my husband's local but we won't be going back until they sort out the service. Please make sure all staff know the basics of what's on the menu and how to efficiently take an order.

Always excellent food and service

Went as a family of 8. Fab service, food was gorgeous. They cater for food allergies and nothing was too much trouble. Very reasonably priced. If I had one complaint, it would be the depressing music. But we joked with the staff and they changed it. Will deff be back.

We went to the shepherds Arms for a meal. It was absolutely gorgeous from walking in the door to sitting down to the table to eat our meal. We was made to feel very welcome. Even the guy from the kitchen came out had a chat to make sure everything was okay. I cannot believe we haven’t found this pub sooner and cannot wait to return.

Food was good well cooked I got a roast beef off special board. Not a complaint but I am not a big fan of potatoes. And it came with roast potatoes chips and mash.

Food was hot, temperature wise, and tasty. Bar service was a bit slow. But not a major issue. Book if it's a Friday.

Great food, great portions attentive staff.

My son and Daughter in law ate here a couple if weeks ago and said how delicious the food was and that we should give it a go. So last nite we did and they were right, it's a lovely place, great atmosphere, staff are friendly and attentive, The food is absolutely spot on, gorgeous. The chef is so lovely and very passionate about his food, really friendly guy. What a Gem of a place, will Definitely be going back ,regularly. I recommend you book as is a very place but well worth it. 👌

Old fashioned pub. Proper hearty food, you get home cooked meals with GRAVY. Not a Au jus. Good food, good value. Bilberry pie on the menu, and rhubarb pie, good Yorkshire food. Fed up of seeing brownie, or a deconstructed crumble.

The food was pretty good to be honest but the way they spoke to the waitressing staff was pretty horrendous, I was very shocked as to how little respect they are shown by elder staff members. I do hope this isn't a regular occurrence in the establishment because it was quite appalling.

Friendly as always Food excellent

I used to love this pub and food but when we went the other night it wasn't as good. The food wasn't amazing, maybe we chose the wrong things but we were a little disappointed and the staff were mainly new and it was obvious. Even the desserts were just ok. My daughter chose the gammon dinner and that looked amazing and the chips were amazing but we won't be rushing back which is a shame.

Great old pub with fantastic food. Staff are brilliant, and nothing is too much. Great food and drinks. What more could you ask for. Would definitely recommend highly. 😉 👍

Definitely a place of 2 halves and in the best way. A lovely restaurant turns into a fun karaoke and disco once the last diners have finished. Everyone made us very welcome and we really enjoyed our somewhat impromptu visits!! Well recommended if you're in the area

Fantastic proper home made food. Chunky home made chips. I had the lamb and it melted in the mouth. If you want traditional well known British food, this is the place to go. Generous portions. Staff are friendly and efficient. Highly recommended.

Absolutely fabulous, great decor inside and great beer garden,with very welcoming and helpful staff, now the reason we went the Food,,,, recommend by a couple in my local coffee shop in denby dale, after reading an extensive menu,hard choice, but went for the garlic mushrooms a simple dish but this was elevated to something special, followed by steak and ale pie,tender pieces of beef in a wonderful gray topped with a fabulous crust but a proper pie pastry top and bottom, all complimented with a large bowl of green beans,fresh carrots buttery mash and proper home made chips,my son had scampi starter and shepherd's pie looking equally fabulous, afraid no room for pudding, so next time two starters and room for a pudding, sorry to go on so long but it was a fabulous lesson on how to take traditional meals and elevate them to another menu at real value for money, well done to all and cant wait to go back, *****

Sunday lunch with friends , what can be better.

Decent pub grub but nothing startling.

Excellent first visit with family for Sunday lunch. Service was polite and quick. No starters for us but we had 6 roast dinners which were excellent! If I'm being really picky, I would have liked another vegetable with my dinner (we had carrots and cabbage) I don't include mashed potatoes as veg really! The meat (beef and turkey) was melt in the mouth and the roasties to die for! We had a mixed bag of deserts which were all great and beautifully presented. Would definitely recommend and will take my parents some time soon! The chef (and owner) came to check we were all happy mid way through which I thought was a nice touch. Deserves to prosper!

Great food and friendly staff and great atmosphere

I’ve seen a few not so good results for the last couple of months and I don’t really know why. We are retired so eat out A LOT so have experience of many restaurants and pub grub. Since moving to Wakefield we have been trying out the restaurants at this side rather than Leeds side. We just happened upon this little gem of a pub. I can honestly say I have not had a bad experience with waiting, service or food on any visit. Yesterday I had Lamb from the specials board. It was cooked in honey and mint. Served in a small pan with a Yorkshire on top. Veg was separate and was cooked to perfection. The lamb just melted in the mouth and each mouthful was a ‘hum’ of delight. Unfortunately I didn’t have room for a splendid dish of roll poly with custard but I’ll be back!!!

The food was okay and standard fair. However the waiting times when we arrived was long, even after we had booked our table accompanied by an elderly family member who found it difficult to stand. We then had a further wait of 45 minutes for our main courses. Not acceptable and poor customer service. Sad

Visited here on Friday the bar staff are friendly the food is delicious and the waiting staff very polite and friendly and very fair prices You won’t be disappointed 👍

Michael is a fantastic host and the food is amazing. The steak pie and the vegetables were gorgeous and the desserts were fabulous. All very reasonable priced and we will definitely return.

Nostalgic Kitchen at the Shepherds Arms.

Our 1st visit to the Shepherd's Arms, and was not disappointed. Beautiful meal 10/10 . Will be definitely going back again. Couldn't fault anything and a great choice of menu, chef/owner even came to our table to ask if we'd enjoyed the meal (lovely touch) ! Expect another visit !

Just popped in for a meal... had belly of pork... the meat was lovely but the rest left a lot to be desired. Soggy tasteless veg and a cold yorkshire pud. Only two choices of red wine, shiraz or merlot. I understand now why it is called nostalgic kitchen. However don't let me put you off.... they may have had an off day

Just some feedback for you after today as the members of my party begged me not to say anything at the time. We were positioned at the top end up 2 steps despite asking for being on the flat as my 97 year old has mobility issues. 2 of the party had roast chicken dinner. It was overcooked and dry and both left some. I did try some and agreed. We had asked for some teas and coffees and they were never delivered. We asked for the bill 3 times while at the table and as it was approaching 2pm we vacated the table and stood in the very busy bar. Eventually a member of staff came across and after asking a 4th time we were given the bill and paid. Only because of my honesty did you get paid It definitely wasn't up to your usual standard of food or service 😒.

Great local pub. Although very busy offered a table if we went through to the pool room. Once seated in the dining room staff helpful and polite. A delicious menu offering many mouth watering choices. Ample portions along with vegetables and mashed potatoes. A nice dessert menu to finish the meal. A great evening out and not expensive to the wallet. Thank you team for a pleasant evening.

The place looks really good and food smells good too. BUT we didn't get to eat in due to the ignorance of the waitress and the bloke behind the bar.. never asked if we wanted a drink or a seat even though no one else been served.. just felt like we was under their feet. NOT HAPPY AT ALL. VERY IGNORANT TO IGNORED.

Good honest quality food ,deliberate retro environment decent portions of all home made food no bought in cheap dessert here .Friendly welcoming staff .Well worth a visit you won't feel ripped off

We enjoyed our meal and staff were great but it was very busy and very noisy. Most meals here are traditional pub grub. No fancy frills just good food.

This place deserves 6 stars!! Lovely pub. We were spoilt for choice with the menu. We all chose from the specials board and every meal was delicious. And very generous portions. Our waitress was very efficient and friendly with a great sense of humour. We had a lovely evening. Good value for money. We will definitely be back.

very nice food and helpfull staff

Poor beer. One choice of real ale which was off. Although they changed it for another beer the older chap wasn’t happy and brushed passed on his way to the cellar.

Simply The Best. Four of us golfers visited two nights in succession, had 8 different meals over the visits and each dish scored a minimum of 10/10. The Belly Pork is the very best that I have ever experienced and it’s one of my favourite meals. Michael is one top chef.

Excellent food , excellent all round experience.

Ambience lovely and cosy. Staff brilliant and very persons ale and welcoming. Food brilliant, I had the haddock and butterfly prawns in garlic and my friend had hot steak sandwich, washed down with a lovely bottle of Pinot.
