We were spending the day at Castleton and Pontifract so needed somewhere to eat. So we looked on trip advisor where else? Every rating was 5 excellent so the malt shovel was our venue for food. Now I'm being honest as we entered the ordinary and in need of TLC pub I was worried. My wife likes everything clean and tidy and it is. The big clue is toilets and they are some of the best I've been in. The second is atmosphere and welcome. Now the regulars , landlady and very tall son 6ft 5 I think he said and a really nice guy. Next was the food. We had a meal each 2 for £9 , tea £1 and puddings £2.50. Mine was a steak pie . This was delivered on a hot plate with hot veg and jacket potatoe. The pie in its own dish about 8x4 inches. Fantastic filling perfectly cooked. Tender beef and lots of it onions and gravy topped by homemade short crust pastry and a jug of more gravy. The best pub pie ever. The wife had chicken melt and again jacket potatoe and salad. Hot and yummy. Pudding was rhubarb crumble with custard. Had to have rhubarb it's grown locally and tasty. Worth every penny and more. We talked to the landlady who is a local from a mining family. The pub became their thirteen months ago and needs some money spend but they painted and tidied for now. Seemingly she has a stunning Sunday lunch and we are tempted to visit again from Huddersfield. If your visiting junction 32 don't waste money on the big multiples here is a local pub , with a lovely family and great food. It costs us £15 and we couldn't eat anything else that day. We will return.

We've eaten here several times now including Sunday lunch and Valentine's Day and can't fault anything. The food is delicious and you can tell it's all homemade and the owners and staff are really friendly and can't do enough to help. We like the place so much that we held my daughters 21st here and the entire night was amazing. There was a fantastic spread and a DJ on and everyone had a brilliant time. I would recommend giving this place a try.

I can't fault The Malt Shovel, what a wonderful place for my special treat. The staff were so friendly with nothing too much ask. This was our first visit but were made to feel like regulars to this lovely local pub. Coupled with the excellent staff was beautiful food which I couldn't fault! I'm definitely coming back! Thank you all for making my day! I'm a very lucky Mummy.

This is my pub I have been running it for 10 months now and in that time it has all been freshly painted and cleaned up. It still is a little tired and dated and we are hoping for a referb in the near future. It is clean and well looked after. We do home cooked food 7 days a week which I do myself. Being a fully qualified chef working in the food industry for the past 30 years since leaving school. The food is good quality and very affordable my Sunday roast starts at just £4.25 and my main meals mon to sat are £4.95 each or 2 for £9. We do deals and specials and we even have a shower in the gents for our customers that are drivers. We are planning on doing the rooms upstairs so we can start up bed and breakfast over the next 12 months too. We are new to trip advisor and don't have many reviews yet and I just wanted to put some truth on to show everyone thanks for reading

Mel and Mark laid on an excellent late Christmas party for the VX Enthusiasts. They even managed to lay on a snow storm which added to the ambiance. The 3 course meal was excellent along with the free flowing wine and only cost us £15 ahead. The locals in the other bar were enjoying a DJ and karaoke night ,So all in all I would highly recommend a return visit for our club .

Being from out of town and cat sitting for the week we thought we would sample some of the pubs of Normanton. All good until we entered The Horse & Jockey. After the first drink the barmaid was sitting outside the bar chatting to the local ‘clientele’ when I went to ask for another drink and she already looked like I was putting her out … she short measured 2 large wine by quite a bit so as I was paying I asked politely if she could top them up to the line … she pulled a huffy face and took the glasses back to put more in. I said it’s not too much to ask is it and she didn’t even acknowledge me then just put the two glasses back on the bar without looking at me …. they were still short of the line but I just assumed she must be short sighted at that point. Then we had to put up with one of the locals bashing the fruit machine right by us (in the quietest area of the pub) while shouting back to his mates by the bar (including the stroppy barmaid who had returned to them) because he wasn’t winning … we didn’t eat there and after seeing the state of the apron on the ‘cook’ I wouldn’t dare … he looked like he’d been butchering meat for the sausage and burgers in the back of the pub!

First visit for a quick tea and won’t be last: gorgeous food. Very friendly professional gentleman greeted us and explained menu etc. Had the chicken burger and Parmesan/Truffle fries: delicious. Hubby enjoyed his beef pattie and fries too. We will be back to try other dishes on menu soon. Can highly recommend

We had the afternoon tea and it was amazing. You get so much and it isn’t boring like most afternoon teas you get fresh fish goujons and sliced sausage roles
