went on a day out with family to southport and spotted the sandgrounder, went in and got 6 meals. excellent service, staff all very friendly & food was 10/10 can’t wait to go back again. definitely recommend!

Indulging in fish and chips by the seaside is a quintessential British experience, and The Sandgrounder at Southport does it justice. The portion sizes were generous, and the quality of the fish was excellent, especially with its golden crispy batter. Our order included: Chips Barm: £3.50 Jumbo Sausage: £2.00 Cod: £6.50 Large Chips: £4.50 Fish dinner: £12.50 (includes fish, chips, mushy peas, and choice of curry or gravy) Slushy: £1.50 I'd happily return for another fish dinner. Overall, it was a satisfying experience.

Food was amazing, staff went above and beyond, really happy. Excellent chips, gravy was spot on, plenty of vinegar 😊 😋

I popped in here one Sunday lunchtime with a friend. The owner was very friendly and chatty. The fish and chips were cooked fresh and tasted delicious. They have a room upstairs where you can take your food and eat it indoors, which was handy. Overall, highly recommended.

Possibly the best fish and chips in the world. Couldn’t put my finger on quite why this food was so good I’m not normally a fan of fish and chips but the fish was perfectly cooked, white and fresh with unreal crispy batter and the chips were perfect. We sat and waited while impatient folk couldn’t be bothered to queue but wow did they miss out! Will be back next time in the area for sure.

Visited on Wednesday on a family trip to Southport and called in to have a fish and chip lunch. Great service and beautiful food. Highly recommend and will definitely return next time we are in Southport

Stopped off for something to eat, had curry and chips best curry I have tasted and chips were lovely and fresh. Had a coffee with a flavoured shot, not many chippes do that, service was quick and very polite, will be calling again.

Been here several times over the years. usually when taking the dog (Polly) to nearby beaches. Food is allways freshly cooked and excellent quality, we both had fish and chips and Polly had her usual sausage. Very friendly staff very clean takeaway great portion size. No need to look any further for satisfaction.

Fabulous little fish bar with quality food. Very well priced from what I have seen locally where we live. Popular place so do expect to queue but it is worth the wait. Well cooked fish with beautiful crispy batter served with fresh chips and beautiful mushy peas all for under a tenner, it’s a definite must visit!!

Best chips in Southport. Big portions, not greasy. Great gravy and curry sauce. On the road down to the Carousel on the right side.

This is the best overall in Southport for value and quality. The standard is excellent and the same as Jackson’s over the road which I have also reviewed positively on a previous occasion. It is however better value and as we have a small dog the problem is solved because we can take her upstairs. In the Summer you can sit outside but this is handy in the winter. The homemade savoury is excellent, just like they used to be, large and not like the thin offerings you usually get. The owner is very friendly and his son(?). Very clean toilets. What could be better? A run to Southport, walk the dog then ‘Chippy tea’ before going home

I had cod & chips, wife had fishcake & chips. Both meals were superb & we were kindly invited to eat our ‘takeaway’ upstairs which was welcome as it was cold & wet outside.

Not a massive fan of fish and chips really as I find them too greasy and I feel horrible after eating them. But tried this place this evening and it was delicious. Got fish and chips, batter was very light, chips not greasy at all and I didn’t feel sluggish after eating it. Also the portion sizes are HUGE! You won’t want a dessert after coming here. Will definately be coming again soon, only downside is no outdoor seating which would be a good addition

Visited on 24th September 2020. Freshly cooked fish and chips. Best fish I have tasted in years. Friendly staff. Good value price. Sat inside upstairs. Very covid safe. Meal wrapped up. We took it upstairs. Good clean area.Track and trace details given. Staff came upstairs twice to check everything was OK. Code given for toilet, which was clean. Overall, excellent experience. We will go back.

Visited a couple of times in the last month and the quality of the chips are outstanding. Cooked absolutely perfectly. Crispy outside and fluffy inside. Fish portions are good and again cooked well, not swimming in grease and lovely crispy batter. Staff are pleasant, helpful and unfazed even when serving us and our grandkids who constantly changed their minds over drinks etc.! Who minds queueing when the foods this good?Our orders were always 'take aways' so can't comment on restaurant facilities.For a seaside chippy you would expect to pay more as prices are very competitive and portion sizes are ample.

We came across this chip shop during a walk around Southport and decide to stop for a bit of lunch. The queue for take away was long but it was lunch time on a Saturday so this is to be expected. It didn’t seem to affect the quality of the food however, we bought our food and took it to sit by the lake to eat. Everything was piping hot and tasted lovely.

You place your order at the take-away and then you can either go upstairs to the restaurant, or take your order to eat outside. We wanted cod, but they only had haddock on the day we were there, so we ordered haddock and chips and took it upstairs into the restaurant through the door next to the takeaway. The fish was excellent, fresh fish and light and crispy batter. The chips were a little greasy, but still tasted good. The meal was good value compared to prices at the Pier Pavilion. The Sandgrounder restaurant is actually just a room to eat in, and with a toilet but both very clean, and a member of staff came in and sanitised all the tables. Enjoyed our meal with friendly service and would go again.

My family have been going here for years! Although we haven’t been too recently I just add I’ve never had a poor experience and I’ve always been a fan of it’s smaller size as it’s quite cosy!

Went here on a busy day, people were queuing outside. The fish was really nice and lightly battered, the type you can eat, crisp and tasty. Chips were good. The portions were not huge, just the right size. Staff were friendly and efficient, although many people in front of us it hardly took any time. Price was good for a seafront position. Will use again on our next visit.

A wholeheartedly positive recommendation - but especially for the chips which are the best I have ever tasted - anywhere! The battered cod was extremely good, and my kids were enthusiastic about the sausage and curry sauce. Overall, along with a friendly welcome, this is the only fish and chip shop you need to visit. Totally deserving of the 5* hygiene and quality awards they’ve got!

Amazing service, friendly and customer focussed especially with COVID-19 about. The quality of food, portion sizes were amazing. We ordered 2 chips for a family of 5, but portions were generous, So one would have sufficed. (Don’t worry we ordered other bits too- all were well cooked, piping hot and delicious) When we return, we will go back here again. Would recommend this chop shop to anyone.

I'd consider myself an expert in quality fish n chips and I'd say this place hits all the right notes! Staff were friendly and chatty, we got a comfortable seat upstairs and the food was gorgeous - defo recommend this 'plaice'😉. 👍

I’ve been coming to the Sandgrounder every time I’ve been to Southport since I can remember. Came with my three year old today and hopefully this will start the same memories for her they I have of coming to Southport and the same tradition of coming to the Sandgrounder as well. The food and service were both excellent as always. Very friendly waitress and exceptional fish, chips, curry sauce and tea :)

Visited the Sandgrounder restaurant today after a lovely day at the flower show, to have a meal before we travelled home, fish and chips were lovely we all had the haddock special, fish chips peas bread and butter, and a cup of tea, served in a big tea pot. Food came quick and the batter on the fish was lovely and light, £8.25 much cheaper then any where else, the restaurant is lovely and clean, toilets are spotless, will call again if in Southport.

We’ve tried all the fish and chip shops in Southport and the sandgrounder is definitely the best. Will definitely be returning.

Walked past here a few times but finally got round to calling in today. Fresh fish, well cooked and a varied menu on offer too. Friendly and prompt service.

This is my 2nd visit here. We visit Southport twice a year and always get fish and chips, have to say the haddock today was perfect as were the chips, only had takeaway but was lovely. Very pleasant staff, lovely clean venue. Would definitely recommend

Just fell across this searching for fish and chips to eat in and made the right choice. Lovely fish and chips! I rarely eat the batter on my fish but have to say their home made batter was delicious along with their hunter me made mushy peas!

I made an order at The Sandgrounder for all my colleagues (around 40 of us) The food was incredible. All my colleagues loved the food, so fresh and still piping hot! Wrapped up perfectly, all named. Service was amazing! Staff are also amazing and so welcoming. All of my colleagues were made up with their food, will most definitely be returning! 5 star rating all the way!

The title says it all really. The chippies (and other businesses) nearest the promenade have so much footfall past them that they don’t need to try too hard and they’ve obviously got it down to a fine art, so my review isn’t going to change anything. The staff were friendly enough and what there was of the fish tasted fine, but passing off tinned marrowfats as mushy peas is a heinous thing to do my book, although it’s not uncommon. Oh, and how hard is it to wipe the tables down properly?

I enjoyed the tasty chips and lovely battered haddock. Enjoyed eating these in Kings park on a lovely warm summers day, while watching the world go by.

Best fish and chips lovely place very polite staff will be eating there again definitely. I would recommend it to anyone.

I went into the take away section. I got chips pudding and gravy. The only really good part was the pudding. Which they get externally. I payed £1 for a meager amount of gravy and didn't say anything due to how intimidating the staff seemed. the food is adequate but I wouldn't recommend going with a large group/ family as the price will quickly stack up. Plus they do not do children's portions forcing people to pay £5 and over for a meal that will be barely eaten.

Good old trip advsior. a quick search and we stumbled upon this lettle beauty. Take away or eat in, its all great. we ate upstairs as there were 9 of us. Very busy and alittle cramped but gosh it was worth it. Fantastic food and prices reasonable. No wonder the queue was round the corner. Well worth a visit but get there before they open or be prepared to wait.

We were in Southport for the day on Bank Holiday Weekend. We noticed the Chippy in Neville Street and were hungry. There was quite a long queue waiting to be served but we decided to be patient. Have to say it was well worth the wait we had chips and gravy and they were fantastic.One of the best chippies with the best chips i have ever had.

Purchased from the takeaway , we had to wait for a fresh fish and noted that the staff were all busy cleaning the surface areas as they worked - good to see. The fish and chips were worth the wait, very reasonably priced and a good portion size. Would definitely call again when next in southport.

We took a group of recycled teenagers to Southport for the day,my family decided to have lunch here I must say it am glad we did we all had the fish and chips the fish was absolutely delicious chips were really good and a good cup of tea service was good couldn't do enough for us the prices were not back at all ,on our way home we called in again and ordered chips for our recycled teenagers the owner was really helpful lovely guy and the verdict was !!they were lovely .thank you for looking after us ,will definitely be going back x

We came here for tea and had the fish and chip special which came with peas a slice of bread and a cup of coffee for £7.80 which we thought was great value for money .The food was hot and tasty and the staff were lovely and welcoming .Will be going again next time in Southport.

Super prices, great staff it might not be a Wetherspoons but it comes a very close second. So many TV screens to watch the sports live!

Y encontramos la Sandgrounder estaban más que felices con el personal es amable y muy agradable, la comida recién preparada. Recomiendo el bacalao especial. Herramientas que fue muy agradable y el propietario permite el 2 de nosotros para pararse dentro y comer patatas fritas y salsa y tenía una conversación muy agradable con él! Si sólo cada propietario de negocios era tan agradable como él era! Recomiendo encarecidamente este "fish and chips" a cualquiera que visite Southport, han de estar arriba y sinceramente no puede hacer más por ti! Just had late lunch with my family. Customer service very good and the food fantastic, fish fresh and beautifully cooked and chips perfect not greasy.The restaurant is nicely decorated and spotless. I highly recommend it here!

Realy gorgeous dinner fish was perfect just the way i like it lightly battered mushy peas sat in the restaurant...

We literally had to queue out of the door for 20 mins.... but having read some great trip advisor reviews hoped it was worth the wait.Don't get me wrong the food was ok but just very average (a bit too greasy if anything). The problem was the service. With just 2 staff serving and cooking for the restaurant AND the take away it certainly wasn't FAST food. Not worth waiting 20 mins for.... although if they weren't as busy or sorted the slow service out they would be ok.

This is a place which needs sorting the toilets disgusting the bar smells of burnt oil fat probaly is scuffy staff pants round ankles tatoos on face neck big brards lack of hygiene sticky bar not been cleaned heatih safety issuses beer needs lookin at in general give it a miss better bars etc on lord street a lot cleaner and no snortin in loos

We go to the Sandgrounder chippy quite often,both to eat in and take away. The restaurant upstairs is ideal if you want to take the weight off your feet and enjoy tasty fish and chips. Have never had a bad meal,always freshly cooked,chips not left in warmer,quick service and good prices. Staff are very friendly too. Best chippy in Southport!! :-)

Excellent food served by lovely friendly staff, even though we only had the small meals there were ample portions and well cooked, certainly worth another visit.

Went to the Sandgrounder today. Thought the upstairs was closed. Very cold and no-one else in at 1pm. waited nearly half an hour for fish and chips despite it being empty. No atmosphere whatsoever, staff talking amongst themselves.The meal when it arrived was barely edible, reheated chips not fresh, fish gooey with batter. The worst meal I ever had in there!No wonder jacksons was full. Would go there next time. When a place is full of customers that speaks for itself. I have had good meals in the past at Sandgrounder but the standards have dropped now. Not a good experience for myself and grandson's first visit.

Was in Southport shopping on Sunday the eighth I ended up going into the Sandgrounder chip shop for lunch there was a nice friendly fat red head and the funny scouser with glasses serving behind the counter that took my order.It was cold outside so that lad asked if I wanted to eat at the restaurant so I took my family upstairs and enjoyed a great English chippy dinner lovely restaurant with toilets clean tables and friendly waitress at the end we could not believe the price what value would highly recommend this to all my followers to the management you're doing a great job keep it up. 5* what an amazing chippy, it's the best chippy by far in southport. I've lived in southport for a few years now, I mainly went to the swan chippy but since I tried the sand grounder I will never go anywhere else. The food is absolutely gorgeous & the staff they are so friendly & pleasant. It's a very clean place I will be back soon. I would highly recommend to anyone! :)

I took the family here for the Spookport Festival and we all agreed that some warm lovely chips watching the festival was the highlight of the night, and the staff where very friendly and helpful on where to go next and get the best spot the watch the show. With a family of 5 it was great value and choice of options on the menu. We have been to Southport a number of times and now when we go this will be the one place we choose for something to eat. Best in town by far.

We were passing and popped in for a quick lunch. The place looked lovely all decorated for Halloween and freshly painted (smell of paint and wet paint signs gave it away) and super clean. We chose from the two for £9 menu, I had the popcorn chicken and my husband had the scampy, I was not expecting such a large amount of chicken I couldn't eat it all. Definitely worth it.

The wife's cheese and onion pie had dried out a little around the crust but to be fair it was almost closing time.Definitely worth a visit for a traditional lancashire meal if your out along the prom!

The restaurant is up some steep steps, so Mum couldn't get up there in her chair, but oh the food, we got fish, chips and peas, from the take away part, gourgues, I can recommend it, the day was a bonny one, so we sat out in the sun, glorious.

We visited the take away side of SandDowners and ordered 4fish and 3portiobs of chips for 3 adults and my 4 year old Granddaughter. Obligingly the gentleman serving made up four trays for us, one with a smaller amount of fish. We sat outside to enjoy our treat. Unfortunately my Granddaughter was so enthusiastic that she knocked her tray into the floor.The closed sign was now in place but my daughter explained the situation and attempted to buy a replacement.Not only was she served with a fresh tray of fish and chips but the gentleman would not accept any payment even when my daughter offered the price of a beer. We will call again any time we are in Southport. Freshly battered beautifully tasting fish, perfectly cooked chips and amazing service

By reading the reviews the fish and chips are ok, but I ordered the special, fish and chips bread and butter and tea,the chips were ok but the fish was mostly batter had a much better fish at my local wetherspoon's.The staff are very friendly but it was very hot in there it looked like it has air con, but it wasn't on.So if you can climb the stairs don't order the special.

Southport is not short of decent fish and chip shops but this must be one of the best. On a busy, sunny day in August I ordered cod and chips and was served straightaway. The cod was very succulent in a crispy batter while the chips were fried to perfection. All for just over a fiver. Definitely a place to remember when visiting Southport.
