A lovely spot that always had fresh (and sadly rare in Newcastle ) independent feel to it has sadly CLOSED. On the plus side St Sushi are supposed to be taking over the spot which would be a better location for them

I've been coming here for a few years, and whilst the service and atmosphere remain good, the new menu which has been recently introduced is very disappointing. The tapas we had was half-warm and microwaved, and tasted as though it had been mass-produced and recently defrosted, which is a far cry from the previous tasty tapas I've had here. Will hesitate to return for food.

After reading the mixed reviews on here I was actually put off going to try this little cafe but pleased I ignored the negative comments. We were welcomed warmly by the friendly staff and offered the menus and chefs specials.pleasent atmosphere and wide choice of food which was hot, tasty and delicious.Went for the 6 tapas dishes for GBP26 and there was more than enough for both of us. Large variery of prawns, Chorizo, Calamari etc - Huge portion of Nachos.Decided on the Sangria (by the jug) which was ok-not sure there was much alcohol in it.Really enjoyed the atmosphere and ambience of the cafe and please do not be put off by the negative comments posted on here.

I went here with my finance for what was supposed to be a special meal. We ordered a starter to share and then three tapas dishes of chorizo, bruschetta and meatballs. After quite a wait a waitress came over to ask if we were waiting for anything and we explained we had also ordered three tapas. After a further wait the dishes arrived and were an utter disappointment. The bruschetta consisted of thick cut slices of soggy brown bread and the meatballs were small and had gristle in them. I explained to the waitress why I wasn't happy with the two dishes and she said she would get someone over. I then spoke to the chef and explained why I was not happy. The chef then sent a lady from the bar up and I again clarified what was wrong with the dishes. I was told that the items would be removed from the bill but when the bill arrived only one item had been deducted. I pointed this out to the waiting staff who then brought the manager upstairs. This woman had no customer care skills and was most intimidating. For the fourth time I had to explain why I was not happy with the dishes and I said I would pay for the food and drinks consumed but not for the meatballs and the bruschetta. The manager then said she was going to call the police and walked off. By the time I had gathered my things and went downstairs to the bar area she was on the phone to Northumbria police. I could not believe how I was being treated and for the sum of £4.75 the manager had called the police. In the end I had to pay for the food but in hindsight I wish I had waited for the police to arrive to advise them that this woman should be prosecuted for wasting police time. The manager clearly does not care about her customers or the reputation of her establishment. She said (and I quote) "If I were to deduct items from a bill every time someone was not happy with the food I would be out of business!". Says it all really. She also went on to tell me that she had called the police regarding another couple so this seems to be a nasty habit of hers if you criticise the food. You will see from other reviews on trip advisor that the food is below standard and that others have noticed the bad attitude of the owner. I will certainly not return and shall inform friends and colleagues to stay clear of this place in future.

As mentioned in my above summary, i'd been going to Salsa for the past year and as my other half lives round the corner, it was pretty much deemed as our local. We went in last night (April 5th) and we're greeted by a polite and friendly waitress who said she'd squeeze us in. We looked at our menus and I went to the bar to order my food where I was then told that they now did table service, which to be fair was cool with us. We looked at the menu and thought that some of the prices appeared to have risen by £1 or more to around £5 per dish? which for any tapas fan is a but more expensive than usual. I was also sad to see my favourite beef in paprika cream dish now gone. Overall I was a bit confused by the menu as it was a bit generic and less traditional. When the waitress came over we ordered two mojitos and the BBQ platter - which we were then told they had none left of. Personally I think any good waiter would have told me that when we we're sat down at our tables or before we ordered. So, after a couple of minutes we ordered our food. Our mojitos came and they were not good as they just tasted of sugar and lime with not even a hint of rum. The waitresses could have done better. As for the food..... well we simply can't comment because we waited ......and waited and 45 minutes later we asked the waitress for an update and she asked whether we needed our bill - and we told her we'd waited 45 minutes and had no food, to which she said she'd chase the chef - no apology. I then asked if she could give us an idea of when it's come and she said she'd hVe to check with the chef and made the fatal mistake of joking and asking whether I was hungry, which I replied 'yes when I've been waiting 45 minutes for my food'. Before going upstairs we noticed that she flitted around other tables who also seemed cross and I also noticed that no food had been brought down for some time and people we're sitting with empty plates for a while. There were around 4-5 staff on and most of them were standing behind the bar doing nothing! After another five minutes we saw the waitress wandering around and we got annoyed because she had not bothered to come and update or apologise. At that point my other half and I said guessed they'd forgotten to put our order through and they were avoiding us, so decided to go pay for our drinks and leave. We went to the bar and asked for the bill and said we'd waited 45 mins etc and the lady apologised and said they'd been really busy. Now I don't want to be difficult here, but busyness ain't an excuse - it's a match day Saturday and you're a restaurant on the walk route - you're going to be busy! We were charged for one of our naff mojitos and apologised to again with the busy line. Really gutted as I used to absolutely live that place. The staff need training and the chef needs to get a move on.

We came here in a sizeable group of friends. The food was below par, the calamari was the saltiest I've ever had, not nice. The food order came out sporadically and some if us had finished before some got theirs. They seemed to think continually plying us with potato wedges would help, it didn't! To round it all off, the chef was bringing out some food for another table as we left and he was taking to another member off staff. His language was appalling and unprofessional. Gordon Ramsey he most definitely was not, despite the swearing. I won't be returning.

I'm a fan of tapas; who doesn't love chorizo, omelette, and paella? The Salsa Club can do all of these very well, and also has some more original tapas alongside the standards. The food is good and freshly cooked, and the drinks are good too. I had my 30th birthday meal there in the room upstairs, and it was great. A good place to go if you're wanting to eat out with friends and order as much or as little food as you like. The nachos are excellent as well, much better than the sort you get as snacks in bars, with generous helpings of refried beans, guacamole, sour cream and cheese. Very handy if you're heading to the O2 or the Tyne Theatre.

Went tonight with my girlfriend, using the gourmet card. It seems they now offer table service, great! But... This needs improving, either offer it or don't! Each time we wanted something (food order or more drinks) we had to approach the bar to prompt the table service, spoils the experience somewhat! However, the staff were very friendly and relaxed and made us feel welcome, the food was delivered to us by the chef and it was superb. The waitress informed us they had a new chef and boy, could you tell! The prawns were to die for and Brie was delicious! We've been a few times and, although we enjoyed it, we've never thought to review. However, tonight was different, the new chef is doing you proud!Yes, as other reviews mention, the portions are a touch smaller, but the quality had improved hugely. Always is the quality more important than quantity, to me! We'll be back soon!

We arrived late Saturday afternoon at around 5.30pm. We were pointed towards to only uneserved table and the waitress took our drinks order quickly. We mulled over the menu and finally decided and waited for someone to take our order. There were two girls behind the bar, one girl sitting on the customer side, playing with her phone and another girl leaning over the bar, all four chattering away.Eventually my partner got up and ordered at the bar.Another table had been waiting just as long and a lady got up to order and was told it was table service and someone would be over to take her order! Our food came out quickly - brought out by what looked like the chef which we found quite strange considering the presence of so many idle waitresses. The food was lovely and good value for money and a wide range of vegetarian options available. The girl who has been sat playing on her phone eventually got up and started serving. Do they not have a staff room?It seems a shame that a lot of conversation goes on in front of customers which I find very unprofessional. The place could do with some staff training as two of the waitresses didn't even come out from behind the bar and it seemed that only one was actually doing any work. All in all, food good, service needs improving.

I don't usually write reviews but felt I had to comment on our experience last night. My husband and I selected a few tapas priced between £4.45 and £4.95, as there was a concert (that we were going to) at O2 Academy the place was apparently fully booked but they managed to fit us in. Obviously they were trying to make the food last!!!! We got TWO meatballs for £4.95, that's over a pound a bite. Bruscetta was two very small pieces of toast with a scattering of chopped tomatoes. Thinking about it we should have just left when food arrived but being British we just smiled and quickly polished off our meagre offering. Plus side the staff were very nice and friendly. Very disappointing experience.

I went for a meal last night with my husband and I can't recommend this place highly enough - the service was great - lovely, welcoming staff, and the food was of a really high standard. We both ordered prawn dishes and they were probably the best prawns we have ever tasted (and considering that we have travelled extensively to countries where prawns are a national dish, this is quite a feat!). We loved the relaxed but bubbly atmosphere, and would highly recommend a trip to the Salsa Cafe if you have an opportunity - you won't be disappointed (I have no idea what the negative reviews are talking about as from my experience there is absolutely nothing you could fault).

My parents had raved about Salsa after visiting it several times & so had my husband. So when my husband & I paid a visit to Newcastle to see a band, we decided to meet my parents at Salsa for a bite to eat pre-gig. We went for about 4pm, on a Tuesday afternoon, so we were an hour early for the evening Tapas menu, however, in my opinion the lunch time/afternoon menu offered a good choice. It's mainly sandwiches and sides, but the sandwiches are a fair size (ciabattas) with a good choice of fillings, especially the pulled pork & the meatball. On entering the premises the greeting was warm & welcoming & although there was only one other table occupied at this time, there was still a good atmosphere ( by the time we left, about 2hrs later it had filled up considerably). Drinks were served promptly & after allowing us time to have a good look at the menu, our orders were taken. The food arrived approx10-15minutes later, presentation was lovely & the food was very tasty. I would highly recommend Salsa, it's a little out of the way, but well worth searching for. Loved it!!!

The standard of service at the place is absolutely ridiculous these days!!! Absolutely terrible. It's amazing that this place has any decent reviews on here at all. Look at all the latest reviews....it's gone so far down hill it's got to hit rock bottom. The main problem is the owners who sit on the customer side of the service counter most days and have sarcastic conversations with other staff members if any customers dare to complain. The orders take far too long to come...about 45-60 mins for cheese on toast, fish finger sarnie, chicken panini, etc. The quality of ingredients is terrible....that cheap, fake cheese substitute that a lot of pizza shops use these days. No apologies from staff for any inconveniences, e.g late food, cold food, small portions, drafts for the main door being left open, not having the ingredients to cook a certain item from the menu. No apologies what so ever. All I can say is that MacDonald's or burger king would be a better bet than this sesspit....Faster food, better servive, more friendly staff. Avoid at all costs.

Having been several times over the last year, we were disappointed that the menu has significantly changed and is completely different to that on the website. The food itself is now quite mixed, brie and chicken in mushroom sauce good, nachos now poor with little topping and what was like cheap backed beans rather than refried beans.......they used to be my favourite. The wine (a sav blanc) was excellent. The Jazz on a Saturday is also a nice touch and seems to attract a regular following.

I used to love this place recommending it to family, friends and acquaintances but I'll think twice in future.Today I had another terrible experience and this time it was one too many and whilst my below par food is sat next to me, I am spending my lunch hour on TripAdvisor.I ordered 2 firm favourite, usual's, potato wedges & nachos and, based on the description on the menu, a fish finger sandwhich with rocket & coriander mayonnaise. I was told it would take 10 minutes so I popped back to work and returned after 10 minutes. I waited and waited and no-body thought to reassure me that my food was on it's way or to apologise for the wait. In their defence the girls working were rushed off their feet and managing a sudden unexpected rush of customers but it only takes 2 seconds to apologise whilst someone is sat waiting. On my return to work I found the portion of potato wedges had been thrown in the bag, not boxed and it equated to about 1/4 of the usual portion size. I took the whole order back and it was whipped off me and taken to the kitchen. The girl then came down and ignored me and carried on serving, a simple communication or apology would've helped but instead I had to question with someone else what was going on. Very quickly my order was returned to me and I hurried back to work.I handed out everyone's food and couldn't believe the size of the boxes, the same amount of potato wedges had just been shoved into a tiny box, totally missed my point about the portion size then?!! And the nachos box has also shrunk to a ridiculous size. Oh well onto the fish finger, rocket and mayonnaise sandwich which turned out to be fish finger sandwich with a side portion of mustard mayo - for £5.95 I could've got a better lunch for half the price! If this had been a one off I would give Salsa another chance but it just looks as though it's falling apart at the seams and that is such a shame because I rated it a hidden gem for a long time!

Voucher of £14 for two persone for six starters, that is good if you think that from the menu three starters are £15 (!!!). BUT pay attention that some starters add £1 to your bill: I don't think is correct this because the choice would be in the whole menu without addition. And of course the best starters are the ones for which you have to pay the extra.Food is fine, not exceptional but ok. Don't take bruschettas or stuffed peppers. If you have the doubt to finish and be still hungry, be quite sure that six starters are enough for two people.

I bought the living social voucher for 6 tapas for £10 which I thought was a great deal. I called the night before to make a reservation and spoke to a girl who didn't have the slightest clue what she doing, she had never even heard of the deal. I was then told the the voucher has to be used by 5:30pm even though the voucher clearly states 6:30pm in a Friday. We turn up at 5pm for our table and was told by a clueless waitress that we can't use the voucher, I had to embarrassingly show them their own terms and conditions on the voucher. We then ordered our drinks, nobody came to take our food order for another 15 mins so I went to order at the bar. After 45 mins no food had turned up!! We were told that the kitchen wasn't informed of our order and they were just starting to cook it now. Clearly we weren't going to wait any longer and asked to cancel our order. They then had the cheek to present us with a bill for our drinks!!!! The bill came to £10 exactly. We refused to pay as we had already paid £10 for the tapas voucher which we didn't use due to their uselessness. The manager didn't even apologise!!! Stay away!

Before I start I have got to add this is the 1st time I have used a review site and rarely complain, but in this instance I felt so strongly I just had to.I cant comment on evening food here but this has got to be one of the worst places in newcastle for a breakfast. Coffee was fine and offered as soon as we sat down so that makes up for the 1star. However considering the place was empty and after waiting 40mins for our order, I asked if it was going to be much longer as I only had 1hr parking left. I was told it was on its way, no excuse or apology and after another several mins later my breakfast sandwich and my two friends cheese on toast came. Almost 50 mins total! by now id drank my coffee and my friends had gone cold so I asked if we could have a refill to go with our very delayed breakfast. I was then treated to a sarcastic conversation between the waiter and someone at the bar which basicly was more for our ears of how people expect them to be a fast food restaraunt. No disrespect to Maci Ds ect but it's the last type of place we would go apart from this place now we know better. I thought the food was ok it was after all just a bacon egg n sausage sandwich, however my friends were not impressed at all and to top it off my littleones round of toast that was forgotten was rushed out untoasted so he would not eat it. Which reminds me the place is not exactly family friendly as the waitress told off my littleone for playing with his car on another empty table. The bill came to almost £30 including the £2 refills which we were charged for and when I commented at how I found it unbelievable we had to pay for these i was told and I quote "I am just the waiter, I'm not allowed to give discount.Thank god for social networks my Facebook friends and family will stay well clear and word of mouth goes a long way in my book.

Okay, this is probably the weirdest meal I have ever had in a restaurant. After coming for the third time to tell us that something we ordered was sold out another waitres came and practacly told us everything they didn't have of what we ordered. As if she was angry at us for ordering. And this isn't a restaurant with a huge menu. They have about 10 dishes and 10 tapas to choose. So with four of those out of play, me as a meat eater had about 1 dish to choose from the mains. After this it took about an hour for the food to come. The restaurant wasn't empty but it was far from full! And for a steak ciabatta with mayo? they whip those up in 10min at mcd.Although trying to have a jazzy atmosphere. Ripping elevator music on max volume don't satisfy most people.

On a rare night out, my husband and I called into Salsa Café last night for a random drink and I felt I had to comment on the warm, friendly welcome we received. We were not dining on this occasion, however the atmosphere, buzz and generally feel of the café was so very inviting - obviously felt by others too as all the tables were taken and most people were eating, chatting, laughing and generally enjoying themselves. Having dined here before, the excellent choice of dishes, and real value for money experience offered at Salsa is the obvious reason why this place is a real gem in the heart of the City centre. I noticed they are now offering breakfast too.......what more can you ask for whilst in town. Keep up the good work Salsa, you are doing a cracking job!!

A friend booked a table at the Salsa Cafe last week. As I have a serious, potentially life-threatening allergy to nuts I contacted the restaurant in advance (as I always do with a new place) to check whether they would be able to cater safely for me. I was surprised and delighted to be told that the entire menu was nut free, and that nuts were not even allowed on the premises! The group of 8 of us ordered the complete tapas menu to share between us and it was great knowing that I could join in and not worry about avoiding certain dishes. A bonus was that the food was beautifully prepared and delicious and very reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere relaxed, and we had a lovely evening. As they are particularly allergy aware, I'd say they could safely cater for someone with any food allergy, not just nuts.

I'm a regular visitor to Salsa because the food is good, the service friendly and every Saturday night there is live jazz. There's a good range of tapas and at least half the dishes are vegetarian. went early doors before our gig at the o2 and they were really busy with more tables booked and although we didn't make a reservation, they still managed to squeeze us in! all of the staff were very friendly and the young waitress was lovely. we ordered from the traditional tapas and had amixture of things like the tortilla, albondigas, mushrooms in a stilton sauce, garlic bread with cheese and tomato plus a few others. my faves were the mushrooms and the garlic bread (good recommendation from the waitress). The only two downsides I came across were two of the dishes, the paella & the chicken in a sauce, I didn't like but that was down to personal taste not quality and to be honest if you don't try things how do you know if you like it or not... I liked everything from how the place was decorated and furnished with the sofas down stairs mixed in with the tables and chairs and the stone walls with the pictures and the curtains and fairy lights to the eclectic music and the general buzz about the place. Me and my friend had two bottles of peroni each, would have had wine but there was no white rioja??? and the house wine was Australian... in a tapas bar it seemed a bit strange but at least they sold san Miguel hahaha. We sat on table 22 upstairs and the bill came to around the £50 mark including a tip which I thought for how full we felt was great value... I actually could have stayed there all night nibbling and drinking but we had other places to be. I am now looking for any excuse to get back and bring the rest of my friends :)

As the title says this was just a quick snack. It's hard to judge it based on what we had but I have to give it a fair review. We only ordered nachos and drinks but the Nachos were really nice and at a very reasonable price. The Standard nachos include refried beans, sour cream, salsa, guacamole and cheese. It really was spot on. Service was good, it was warm and cosy and had a chilled atmosphere. No complaints from me.

This has been a regular place for me to visit for lunch with friends, however it has become increasingly difficult to use the tastecard in this establishment. Not only do you have to book a table through lunchtime (during the week its relatively quiet) but they now do not take tastecards through the day i was informed over the telephone. Decided to take myself elsewhere instead.

Found this little treasure at the beginning of the year and me and my boyfriend have been here many of times now recently just to grab some nachos. It is a cosy, chilled out atmosphere with good range of food. Last time we went we got the banoffee pie to share and it was one of the best desserts I have ever tasted, at £3 odd I thought it was a bit much to pay but now I find it was a reasonable price. The nachos are just over a fiver and I don't think I have finished a place of them by myself yet! There are plenty of veggie options as well.I recommend this place to anyone, infact it is a meet up place for my 18th to get some food in our belly's before going out. It's an easy place to find and it is just truly amazing. They also do take out with a discounted price and reservations and there is a bar there for alcoholic drinks as well as juices.

I have been to Salsa a few times and every time I have thoroughly enjoyed it. The tapas here is consistently tasty, very fresh and reasonably priced. However, the one thing I love at Salsa is the nachos - I'd go as far as saying they are the best in Newcastle. This place is perfect if you want a quick bite or a few chilled beers with friends before town. Also, very handy for pre-gig food. Highly recommended.

Took my boyfriend here for the first time and we're already planning our next visit! The atmosphere is relaxed and the food was delicious! It is a bit pricey for the tapas, but considering they have dishes including steak and king prawns i didn't resent paying. The wedges and nachos are excellent value. The drinks are relatively cheap and the house wine is great for what you pay. My only criticism is that, although the staff are friendly, it would be more professional to be waited on rather than ordering at the bar

Firstly the food here is amazing, end of......but 3 things really, REALLY got to me on today on our first visit. Firstly, upon paying for the food at the counter by card, a random member of the public who was sat on "our" side of the counter drinking coffee just randomly grabbed the printed out receipts, ripped them off and handed them back to me without saying a word.......this was the owner apparently. Some ID might of been nice or at very least an introduction.....so very informal and quite ignorant. I genuinely had no idea who she was until the original waitress serving me started talking to her "boss". Secondly, the food took ages to arrive (45 minutes) and when it did arrive it was plonked down on our table by the "boss" without so much as an "enjoy your meal"...we even had to get our own knives and forks.....which no one even showed us where they even were!!! Disgraceful really. Service with a smile, yeah right. :-/Last but not least...."the DOOR incident". It was a crisp, clean, coldish autumn day outside but for some reason "the boss" decided to open the door wide and prop it open on latch. The draft was freezing and you could see people becoming cold and uncomfortable and becoming less interested in their meals and more interested in keeping warm. Especially those sat right by the door. This was a total lack of respect by the owner as she did it without even consulting any of her customers beforehand. One customer even got up to shut the door but it was again slammed wide open by the boss as she was obviously soooooo hot. The whole affair was ridiculous and I can tell you now that if I had been sat by the door I would have asked for a full refund. Great food (and I mean that) but the service in this place is atrocious.....try it for yourself and see what I mean.Buenos Nochas folks.

I visited on a Sunday afternoon for a quiet tea and cake but the atmosphere was that of a rough pub rather than a nice restaurant. The first annoyance was with a member of staff whom I’d originally assumed was a customer due to his behaviour. He’d been sitting at the customer-side of the bar having a very loud and protracted conversation on his mobile: no consideration for any customers. I was shocked to discover that he was actually a member of staff; I noticed later he had the salsa café web address on the back of his black t-shirt. As a customer I didn’t want to hear his tittle-tattle which he could have saved for later, rather than broadcast it to the entire bar. After his loud phone-call He was bantering with a group of his mates on a table and they watched a music video on a smartphone at high volume: zero consideration for any other customers. One of his mates made a couple of crude comments, one of them highly mysogynistic. I was absolutely disgusted and stared in disbelief at the member of staff and his mate. They could see me, they knew I was there ... they simply didn't care.I later noticed that when a couple of girls came in for something to eat, although he greeted them with a “hiya” when they walked in, he continued talking to his mates for a good five minutes before going over to see them. It's quite clear where his priorities lay.I dealt with several other members of staff on the same day who were all extremely friendly and professional. The problem was just with this one guy: a young guy who sounded Northern but not from Newcastle. I won't be going back in a hurry. I'll be off to one of the other myriad of cafes / bars in the city of Newcastle. This was a disappointing experience through and through thanks to a guy with seemingly little self-awareness and little regard for his customers.

My parents were visiting for the weekend and I decided to take them to the salsa cafe. We booked in advance which was a must as all the tables did have reserved on them. We sat downstairs and even though we were 20 minutes early the waitress got our table ready. We had nachos while we choose out tapas. They were very good, they had several toppings and they were happy to serve them with the cheese and sour cream on the side (as my partner is allergic). We choose a variety of tapas, such as, meat balls, Brie and cranberry, potatoes, salad etc. All was really tastey. The service was good, you felt like you werent being rushed out. It would have been nice to stay longer as there was a jazz band playing. Overall would defiantly recommend!

My friend and I went along to Salsa as part of Newcastle's Restaurant Week. We went on a whim as it had the best offer out of the selection - three courses and a drink for ten pounds per person. Due to it being part of Restaurant Week, we booked a table ahead, and I have a feeling that when we next go, we'll be booking a table as it picked up quite a bit. Mind I would book ahead purely so I didn't miss out on their fantastic food! When we arrived, we went to the bar where we were directed to our table and given a sheet of paper each. This paper contained all the available food and drink choices for the evening. Between the two of us, we had the tiny nachos and wedges for our starters, both were faultless. We then shared the paella con pollo y chorizo, chorizo a la sidra, albondigas and patatas bravas. The paella and cider chorizo were my favourites, but the lamb meatballs (albondigas) and patatas bravas were still lovely. We both had the chocolate cake for dessert, although I was tempted by most of the choices on offer. In fact that was one of the reasons we said we would go back, so we can try some more items off the menu! I would recommend this restaurant to people of all ages and budgets. It's slightly off the usual beaten path, but worth the distance as it's like a hidden gem tucked away in Newcastle. As students, it didn't break our budget, nor would it if we were buying from the usual menu, and the meal left us very full. The portion sizes were just right and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It's definitely become a favourite place to chill and get a bite to eat.

It's quite surprising to me that I've never got round to leaving a Salsa Cafe review! I love the place. There aren't may good places to eat that maintain a calm vibe but this place suceeds. A fair amount of tables upstairs and down but this place gets packed out in the evenings so prepare for steamy windows and plenty of atmosphere! The nachos are by far the best I've ever had and the wedges with dips never fail to impress.I've eaten here a lot over the past 5 years and a true credit to the place is the menu staples are consistently amazing. Although it did seem to take a while for our food to arrive (45 mins after ordering), once it came it was very nice and we scoffed the lot. The place has a rustic charm and I particularly liked the random seats which included a church pew and some old theatre seats. This is a great independent cafe/bar. A good place to meet friends and enjoy a relaxed drink in a simple, quirky and relaxed atmosphere. However, after eating here 3 times recently i have to say the salsa is the most disappointing thing about the place - a shame, considering its name. The salsa is consistently cold - almost to the point of freezing, which is disappointing particularly when its on top of an otherwise tasty dish of crispy nachos, sour cream, creamy guacamole and spicy beans. A simple dish can be hard to get wrong so its such a shame they can't seeem to get it right here. The other food on the menu is tasty, but to quote another review, could do with packing in more flavour. The staff are generally friendly, but when it's busy - there stress can show and they can be short and sharp. Simple things to improve can change this place from a good place to a great place.

I have dined here on numerous occasions for lunch and dinner and every time the food has excelled. Lunch is primarily "bocadillos" or sandwiches to me, but they are brilliant. Great fresh breads, open or closed, and a variety of fillings from meatballs, bacon brie & cranberry, steak, cajun chicken..... Everything and great fresh bread. A favourite is the open tuna on toasted ciabatta and a few wedges on the side finish the lunch off. Evening meals are more tapas orientated and just as fresh and tasty. The setting ranges from sofas to wooden tables with old theatre seating – pick what you prefer. A nice range of teas, coffees, wines and beers but my favourite is the Australian Ginger Beer. I don’t drink it anywhere else but it’s lovely, as is the wine and bottled beer. The team are friendly and unobtrusive and compliments to the chefs. Oh…. Free Wi-Fi. I should have made this posting years ago, well worth trying.

We visited Salsa on a Saturday evening at around 5.30 pm and were amazed how many tables were reserved. Luckily we found a spare table and sat down to decide what to eat. We had a few different tapas dishes and a bottle of the house red. Most of the tapas was ok but the chicken skewers were pink in the middle and as no one came to ask how our meal was we just didn't eat them. The nachos seemed to be microwaved with the salsa, guacamole and re-fried beans tasting really bland (I assume they are just out of a tin). The tortilla and tenera cremosa were the best things from our selection and we'd recommend these. We have eaten at much better tapas places than this but the atmosphere and music were really good.

My girlfriend and I went for dinner on a Friday night at 7pm. We arrived a few minutes late as our taxi failed to arrive on time, so we were thankful that our booked table was still free with a reserved sign on it, so kudos to Salsa for not giving away our table immediately despite it being very busy. When ordering food at the bar we were told that there would be a 45 minute wait so I asked if it would be possible to bring the bread/dishes out as and when they were ready, which I was told would not be a problem. The first set of tapas dishes arrived very quickly (within 10 minutes), very impressive considering we thought we were in for a 45 minute wait. The food was excellent, each dish was delicious, tasted fresh and was piping hot.Once we were finished with our first set of tapas *all* of our dishes arrived again. It became evident that we had originally received another tables order who happened to order the same items from the menu. This wasn't an issue for us at all as received our food very quickly, however for the other couple this must have been an issue! Clearly the service could therefore be perceived as slightly chaotic, however we left happy and the quality of the food was fantastic. We used a Gourmet society voucher (50% off food), so the value for money was excellent. Not sure I'd be so convinced if we didn't have this offer though.

I used to love this place but since it changed hands from its original management it has lost sight of what a good tapas/wine bar needs to be. There's been a long standing problem with them not keep the white wine cool, and on our latest visit they said they wouldn't charge for a couple of glasses of warm white wine to which we were having to add ice, then came and took them away if we weren't prepared to pay for them, and then put them on the bill anyway... (funnily enough they then gave us back the two glasses of wine when we objected).Chaos and not in a charming way.... It's a shame, this place has a nice atmosphere in an interesting part of town, but under the current management it's not a place you can rely on to deliver the basics.

We have been going here for a number of years and have enjoyed good value food in an excellent atmoshere, however, you may have noticed the past tense being used. We had a mediocre experience for a recent family celebration,so we thought it was a blip. Unfortunately we found otherwise. Popped in for a few tapas and a drink over the weekend, we were going to stay for a while but had one drink and 2 tapas and left. The reason was the appalling portions we got for our tapas and poor quality. For the princely sum of £2 we got 10 olives served in an esspreso cup supposedly marinated (in the past a good handful in olive oil) these appeared to be out of a brine filled jar. didn't break the trade descriptions act but come on poor show. Pan e aioli was in fact white bread lightly char grilled with a half egg cup of cheap tasting garlic mayonaisse. The shift in quality and quantity in the food means we are not going to take visitors to our former little gem which we used to showcase to our friends. What's happened? The Salsa is know just run of the mill! We will keep coming in for a drink but the food is off the menu.

We only had drinks which, as you might expect here, aren't exactly cheap. We were met on entry and taken to our table. We ordered the drinks but there was little to choose from in terms of food. If you champagne and croissants this place might be for you. We struggled a bit to get someone's attention so we could pay and leave. They add a 10% "gratuity" to the bill, but this was actually highlighted. Sadly, although we were ushered in, our exit was very different. The staff were all grouped around the counter chatting away. They didn't even acknowledge our presence as we passed them to find our own way back to ground level. The whole concept of offering something you can charge premiun rates for rests on great service and quality product. We left here with the distinct impression that it's nothing more than 'get them in, rip them off with a 10% "gratuity", then let them wander off to find a venue that delivers real value.

Don't stay here. You're better off in the street. Room 28 houses a resident whose door was knocked on incessantly for 2 hours from 3.00am by an addict " wanting more". Whilst that's their misfortune and all sympathy, it clearly is not a pleasant place for "normal" folk. I was asked by drunks on arrival if I "fancied getting high". The landlords are only on it for money. Not hospitality.
