We always have a fantastic time at the Rusty Bull, but I have to write a review specifically about the divine roast salmon salad I had today. I expected a salad with a few flakes of salmon on top and instead I got a large bowl overflowing with the most delicious, crunchy and fresh salad with a massive salmon steak on top. I couldn't believe how beautifully the fish was cooked. The salad was a riot of colour and flavour, with dozens of fantastic ingredients. It was an absolute delight to the senses and a stunning fine-dining experience. Many thanks to the incredible chef and all the wonderful staff. I can't wait to go back and sample something else on the fabulous menu.

Called in for breakfast this morning as wanted to try a new place. Our normal is Bolstermoor Farm shop. Staff friendly on arrival. Food served quickly. Ordered a well done bacon and tomato sandwich and the wife got a sausage sandwich. First thing she said was....these ain't as good as Bolster! Lol. Mine was okay but bacon a bit thin and no real flavour. Coffee and fresh orange was great though. Also quite expensive at nearly £26.00 for two butties, two coffee and fresh orange!

I do not enjoy or make a habit of writing negative reviews of any restaurants or hotels that I frequent and always look for a positive but I'm going to struggle with this one. It was recommended by a friend and as I live quite close by I was looking forward to the meal and wondering whether visiting would become a regular habit but sadly that won't be the case. It is ideally situated adjacent to the farm shop with indoor and outdoor seating, on a rainy and windy day my friend and I chose the indoor option. I didn't expect it to be cheap but prices are definitely on the high side and to be charged £3.25 for half a pint of diet coke was extortionate along with £12.50 for a Hot Roast Beef speciality sandwich with a few skinny chips. My friend opted for the pie of the day which turned out to be very disappointing as the crust was like concrete while the seasonal vegetables were actually a small portion of spinach though after complaining he was served some proper veg. It took 30 minutes for the food to arrive and nearly as long before the bill was presented despite requesting it when our plates were cleared. I can be positive about the beef in my sandwich which was delicious but because it came with gravy I couldn't pick it up to eat so had to do so with a knife and fork. All in all, I expected better from a farm shop restaurant and I do hope that if my comments are read and digested the criticisms I have made are considered because I would consider visiting again if reviews improve, prices are more reasonable and the service is a bit more efficient as I do not enjoy writing negative reviews.

Tried here for breakfast. Won't be returning. Too pretentious. Waiting staff need training in basic customer service and maybe offering a friendly smile. The breakfast was below average, under cooked eggs and what I can only describe as anemic mushrooms. The type of place that puts green cress garnish on your bacon & eggs (yes, really). Overpriced. The only thing we enjoyed was the cup of tea.

Having had a gorgeous Saturday lunch there a week ago, booked for Sunday lunch yesterday and sadly very disappointed. The beef was so tough it was inedible, the Yorkshire pudding far too greasy, fat coming out as I cut it, cabbage too tough to cut. Only enjoyed mash and roast potatoes and mashed carrot. 2 complimentary coffees as compensation! Asked for hot milk with coffee, given cold, no sugar brought with coffee, again had to get out of seat to ask for sugar. 25 mins from ordering food to being served.

Absolutely rubbish. Ordered a ham and cheese sandwich, yet they only put ham in. Ordered it with mustard - again they missed it off. My wife ordered soup and chips, which she enjoyed. However we ordered our drinks, which never arrived and other people (who'd arrived after us) were getting there's. No one took our order for food so had to ask, and she said she'd send someone out (we were sat outside). Staff were short, curt and not welcoming at all. We've lived in the Holme Valley for nearly 50 years and this service was atrocious. Don't usually leave reviews but this is the second time this has happened, and we were hoping the first time was a one off. Sadly not.

What has happened to the Rusty Bull? We have enjoyed going here for years for breakfast & lunch. After a disappointing lunch on our last recent visit, due to a chef’s uncompromising attitude to a simple request, I was persuaded to return for breakfast today. The ingredients were to their usual high standard, but the plate was swimming in fat. It was as if the egg & mushrooms had been tipped onto the plates with an entire pan full of oil. Even the toast on the side of the plate was soggy & the bacon was barely cooked. We did inform the waitress, but not convinced that she intended to pass on our comments. Sad to say that we won’t risk another visit.

Why do such eateries restict the availability of their favourite options? Hinchliffe's farm shop is renown for their quality meats especially their bacon and sausages. So why restrict their delicious sandwiches to their breakfast menu only? Probably so they can sell 'speciality' sandwiches at £12.50 instead of under £8. Despite the waiting staff agreeing to my only wanting a sausage sandwich (without the brie or onion chutney), it arrives with unrequested fries and the full £12.50 price tag. Bad form. I'll stick with Bolster Moor Farm Shop in future that serves their bacon and sausage sandwiches all day.

Just another average farm shop restaurant. The usual stuff to choose from.Quite noisy as it’s like a large dining room so voices can get very loud . As per the norm in these places the emphasis tends to be on meat. Ig you are a vegetarian there are unfortunately few options. No smoked haddock or prawns, just a few smallish chunks of cod and salmon. Sauce completely tasteless and vegetables so overcooked that I had trouble identifying them. The Rusty Bull created a Fish Friday evening which being non-meat eaters was exciting for us. Everything was marvelous, and we know fish!!! Salt and pepper squid, delish, halibut was a beautiful thick melt-in-your-mouth piece with a garlic butter sauce, perfect. The wine selection there is really nice, some great Spanish, Australian newer wines that are very palatable and a bit different. We have been a few times to special events and they are always really well thought out and creative. Good spot at not bad prices.

After an enjoyable and flavoursome meal here earlier in the year tonight's experience at their Fish Night was a real disappointment . The menu was very basic and when our food arrived proved to be bland , under seasoned and lacking in anything special . My mussels were over cooked in a flavourless watery soup .... no garlic or cream involved , just raw onion and pea shoots . My cod loin , although a nice meaty slab and supposed to come with garlic butter , I could detect none and the accompanying uninspiring side salad was served on the same very hot plate !!! That's a first for me . There was only a choice of 3 very ordinary deserts and no cheese board available . All , of course , expensive as one would expect for a first class meal which sadly this was not . I will not be returning .

Had heard good things about the Rusty Bull, and tried it for the first time at lunchtime today. Ordered a naked burger and the pulled beef sandwich for around £30. After 35 minutes waiting (and no food), the waitress informed us there would be a delay! Food finally arrived after 50 minutes, and unfortunately the burger was over cooked/dry and the bacon frazzled to a crisp. On paying, I also asked about the crispy shallots to see if they were mixed in with the pulled beef, but these were actually missing from that order. Not a great first experience, and very expensive for what we had - unlikely to visit again….

After a moderately disappointing experience with an evening meal for friends which we forgave and put down to bad luck on the day we gave the restaurant another opportunity and booked a three course meal for a family celebration. Food was ok but overall a really disappointing experience. Dairy free diner; after checking twice with staff who flippantly said the cream on top of soup was dairy free, had suspicions confirmed on third check that it was infact cream! Poor form and understandably made this diner wary about the establishments allergen awareness to their whole meal. Service staff were disinterested, inattentive and the experience was mired by service that was so dreadfully slow, at one point we had just sit and watch food after asking for cutlery twice. Lovely venue and as a business owner I appreciate the financial investment it must have taken to set up but it’s such a shame that they just can’t muster the service and food to match.

The egg mayo sandwhich was too thick to bite, looked as if the butter had been sliced off a block about eight inch thick and just placed on bread and over powered the taste of the egg mayo. Hubby had the hot beef sandwich he enjoyed it, but at £12.50 cost too much, £5.00 for 2 teas?? £6.00 for childrens portion. Spent £36.00 and quite honestly thought I'd been robbed. Lovely place for great food served with a smile; Grace and Joanna were both efficient and courteous…..thank you ladies. Introduced my friend to The Rusty Bull Croffle and she was not disappointed! It won’t be long before we return for seconds!

Visited today for what was supposed to be a brunch lunch, what a shock to find we should have booked.!!! It was suppose to be a farmshop cafe.... Table found to discover extortionate pricing and not a bun in sight, ordered a sandwich with limp...

Fantastic food and service! Me and my husband visited the farm shop and decided to pop next door for a coffee, the staff were very welcoming and we were shown to a table without a problem, although it was noticeably busy. After looking at others...

We went for my 62nd birthday lunch celebration with family a party of 5. Service was terrible from the start and food was overcooked, they were struggling with only 2 serving staff who were clearly stressed and fed-up, they made no secret of it, and...

Visited today, booked in for 1.30 for five adults. Quite a delay in taking drinks order and even more of a delay in drinks reaching the table. Food order then taken, three classic hot beef teacakes, the steak pie meal, salmon and mussels dish. Food...

Beautiful location and restaurant, unfortunately not matched by the service or food. The restaurant was more than half empty, although I will say there were people sat outside drinking as it was a lovely day. Took ages for drinks order to be taken, let alone...

Good food. Nice burgers as burger night. Chips a little bland but for £1 more could change that.

We arrived just before 11 for breakfast (our first time visiting) had our drinks orders taken, sat for 15 minutes before the waitress returned (without our drinks) and informed us that because they are "busy" we can only order currant tea cakes or cake. There were 4 empty tables and 4 waiting staff at the front so I can't imagine how they would (or wouldn't, apparently) manage with a full house. Heading to Bolster Moor. Edit following response*** Thanks for your response - however, it might be worth staff actually informing customers on arrival instead of leaving them sitting for 15 minutes to choose from a menu which isn't available. It's not an excuse, I'm afraid, just poor service.

An excellent Sunday breakfast experience. The food was perfect and the service from Abbie and Jack was outstanding. Well done and keep it up 👍.

The rusty bull has the most phenomenal ingredients. . .However the chefs abilities do not do them justice. Soggy lukewarm chips. Cheese toasty dripping with grease. Watery Peppercorn sauce that tastes burnt and nothing like a peppercorn sauce. It is expensive although if the standard of food and service matched the quality of the ingredients it would be worth every penny, Unfortunately this is not the case. Finally. The service was incredibly slow. Attitude and attentiveness requires some major improvement.
