This is my second visit and I love the location, ambience of this pub. The staff are so friendly and helpful and the food delicious. I had the lamb cutlets roast dinner, which was wonderful. My partner the butternut roast. Dad had fish and chips his favourite. Our thoughtful waiter offered a smaller portion for Dad as he has a small appetite and it was perfect. I was impressed. I will certainly be back.

We had a lovely family mid week lunch here. The inside of the pub is particularly beautiful. I was disappointed that they did not have the gluten free fish and chips from what was already limited gluten free options. Went with a large crowd of friends, (11 people), and all of us had a superb meal. Stayed the night here and was really looking forward to it after hearing many good things, especially about the food. Found the staff in the resteraunt/bar to be dismissive and rushed. Almost all the tables had issues with ordering and receiving their food. The menu was missing half the items, so don't expect to be able to order what you want if you do look it up ahead of time. Mains came before our starters, though the starters never actually arrived as they then later claimed they had run out, before serving the same dish to people who ordered after us. After all that, can't say the food is anything memorable. Average pub food you could find almost anywhere without the hefty price tag.Could have simply been an off day, but if it was they weren't remorseful or apologetic.

The venue and especially the food was excellent and the chef needs to be congratulated on producing superb quality food, presented very well. However, unfortunately the levels of service by the front of house team let the whole experience down due to incorrect and late dishes arriving late and on some occasions multiple orders being duplicated which was such a waste. I sincerely hope this was a one off experience as it should not anyone off from visiting this venue which I would always highly recommended.

The food was lovely and the atmosphere really cosy - this is a well maintained proper British countryside pub. There are lovely walks nearby, and the village is very pretty with a beautiful church across the road. The room was lovely, well kept, clean and quiet with a large and stylish bathroom. Our room was large and quiet and the food really was superb - some of the best pub food we've tasted. They were super-busy over the bank holiday weekend so the wait times for food might have been slightly longer than pre-covid but this didn't detract from our enjoyment. Although we'd booked a table in the restaurant we were given a table in the bar area. The young man behind the bar said he would bring over our menus, which he did - twenty minutes later! Another twenty minutes passed before he returned to take our drinks order and, realising service was going to be slow, we ordered our food too, a sandwich, a burger and scallops with a side of fries. Fifteen minutes went by before the waitress brought our drinks. After half an hour we asked her when we would be likely to receive our food. She apologised, saying they were understaffed (really?!) and there was only one chef. She returned immediately with a pathetic plate of a few overcooked i.e. burned (but lukewarm) scallops, hidden under a tepid green sauce, without the side of chips. The other dishes had not arrived by the time the scallops had been eaten so I went to the bar to complain. The young man again said they were understaffed and the chef was on his own. Ten minutes later our dishes arrived - the portion of fries that should have come with the scallops, two dry burgers in a bun with a side order of barely warm fries, a pot of coleslaw and some chicken and avocado slapped into a sliced baguette. The total cost of our food, an eye-watering £40.20. Responsibility for this appalling experience lies with the management for allowing inexperienced members of staff to run the restaurant and bar by themselves and to have just one chef in the kitchen while offering a full lunch menu.

It's a pub we've been to many times and has a good ambience. Today we had a surly attitude from a male member of staff when asked (unnecessarily and possibly unlawfully) whether we could PROVE we had an exemption to wearing a mask - it's doubtful anyone could or would want to prove it in the pub and if a customer has a disability it's a private matter. Even though the restaurant and pub were not busy the service was exceptionally slow. Short measure on a glass of beer had to be topped up. We weren't offered a dessert menu so had to go and ask for the bill then left. To top it all the pub phoned to say we hadn't paid yet if they cleared their tables more efficiently they would have seen the money (with minimal tip!)

Even though we didn't have roasts, which most of the restaurant seemed to be eating, we were incredibly impressed with everything on a rainy February Sunday at the Running Horses. The service was great - relaxed but attentive - and the food almost faultless. The specials were all enticing and I chose both: scallops with cauliflower puree and pickled raisins and grilled stone bass with potato rosti and grilled courgettes. Both were a perfect portion and brilliantly cooked, though one slight flaw would be the grittiness of some bites of scallop; I wasn't sure that they had been prepared as closely as they could have been. My partner's risotto with goats cheese and squash was delicious and moreish, again perfectly portioned and her treacle tart was great too.We can't wait to go back.

Met a friend for lunch here today and was quite excited having looked at the menu on the website. The pub has a lovely roaring fire and is very atmospheric inside. Firstly, the menu on the website was not available. We chose soup from the specials board and decided to try this before ordering a main course. The sweet potato and coconut soup was inedible, tasting only of salt. We sent it back and were not charged for it. We then tried the roasted tomato tart which is in fact some tinned tomatoes and puree sitting in the base of a bowl with two triangles of pastry balanced on top. Not a tart at all more a deconstructed and quickly made course that was not at all tasty. Service was by a polite but inexperienced teenager. We won't be returning. So disappointed.

The plain tomato juice was really good without anything added. The food can be above average, and I have had delicious chicken previously. This time I was served the special of two tiny pieces of plaice, a very little mushroom and red wine sauce which was very good but I had to ask for more, a pile of plain spinach, two precise rectangular chips and a pea shoot. Some starters would be more filling. I had a side of creamed spinach and left the plain spinach. On the upside I did have room for a really good chocolate delice, but the dish was too big and the spoon and fork tried to fall in.My companion had the chicken, it was served with green beans and a lot of plain chick peas which are not easy to eat with a knife and fork, an odd combination, then a creme brûlée with two thick biscuits.

A group of 6 went for Sunday lunch. Table booked for 12.30. The fire at the bar had just been lit which was a shame as it was cold outside. Glad we hadn't booked earlier. The food was tasty but the chicken lollipops could have been heated more - just warm enough to eat but would have liked it hot. The main courses ( 3x salmom, 3 roast dinners) came without any veg - we had to ask. Also had to ask for the horse raddish sauce for the beef. Desserts OK but the bailey's custard had no evidence of any Baileys in it! Having said all this - the food was tasty and we cleaned all the plates. he problem here at the running horses is that it is ALWAYS cold - so you need to wrap up when you eat. I've read previous reviews and this has been mentioned before. The response is 'we had problems' but would fix it. Well they haven't. Such a shame because it gives the feeling that they just dont care. If this contines, it will effect their business for sure - at least during the winter months.

In a half full restaurant (on a Saturday!), we were effectively ignored by the young staff, who seemed to have no clue about customer service. Questions about some of the dished, resulted in a visit by them to the kitchen - they didn't know what they were serving! My 'pink in the middle' steak came out cremated and my Wife's fish smelled decidedly off. The prices are not cheap either.

Giving this a 2 star rating as the service was satisfactory. I ordered the roast chicken special which was the smallest and most tasteless roast I have ever seen costing £18 plus £1 for a Yorkshire pudding!! It tasted awful served with frozen potatoes, a small piece of chicken, some scraps of shredded vegetables and two carrots.

I'm going to caveat this review by stating loud and clear that I accept that not all restaurants/pubs are set up for hosting children/toddlers and I do not hold this fact against them. This being said, I do feel that in 2019, there are certain things that the restaurant/pub industry should be providing… or at least be seen to be attempting to provide!

I went to the running horses with some friends a few weeks ago, and had a wonderful time!! The location is stunning next to a church in a beautiful village, and the food is absolutely amazing. The staff took time to look after us really well and were lovely to have around (especially the new puppy that belongs to the pub manager). Would highly recommend :)

After a glorious stroll at Box Hills we stopped over for lunch at the Running Horses. After reviewing the menu our intended light bite turned into a 3 course meal, we just couldn't choose 1 thing! The food was impeccably presented and really delicious - of a quality you don't usually find in pubs. The staff were so hospitable and went over and above to make sure we were happy. It was the perfect day away from London and we can't wait to come back.

We visited here on a lovely summer day on Bank Holiday Monday. It was busy, but by no means full. Whilst the waiter remained friendly throughout the lunch, the whole experience was an ordeal. Firstly he apologised for taking so long to attend to us because it was a busy bank holiday Monday. He then let us browse the menus for a long time. Then when taking our order he chose this opportune moment to inform us that several items on the menu weren't available! We then had to spend another 10 minutes whilst we all changed our orders and waited for him to come back to us. The whole process from start to finish took ages. In the absence of some items on the menu they did have a BBQ going in the garden so we could order items from the BBQ. He warned that they might arrive earlier than the other meals but he would try and time them to match the rest of the dishes We were fine with this. However, between all 4 main courses, there was 20 minutes between the first and the last dish and 5 minutes between the 3 dishes that were being cooked by the kitchen, with the last one being the salad! He also got the order wrong and a portion of chips never actually arrived. The food overall was fine but nothing special, with the salad consisting of a large selection of green leaves and not much else, and was the last dish to come out!

My family and I came for "the place for Sunday roast". As we entered, we were greeted with a smiley chap called Paulo who informed us about the specials and dishes of the day(all sounding delicious). The photo's will show how amazing the food really was. Glad to see it getting its legs back.

I'm in here usually about once every fortnight and it's a characterful little place. Not a massive selection of beers but fairly priced for the area. The food is top quality; haddock fishcakes were incredible. Friendly staff, cheerful atmostphere although VERY Surrey.

We visited one Friday lunchtime, having booked and were surprised that we were the only diners. A few more were outside but it;s right on the road and people smoke out there. The ambience is like a stage coach, with paraphenalia on the walls and the booths decked out. We actually sat on a small corner round table in pews, with the sun streaming in from the top windows.

Booked the place for an overnight stay. Had a good soup for lunch then headed off to see family. When we got back we were made most welcome and shown to one of the two new rooms. They were all named after race courses. The room was very comfortable and tastily decorated with a large shower ensuite. The extra large bed was extremely comfortable with good quality cotton linen and fluffy towels. There were some nice touches with good quality bathroom products. The food that night was very good and I can highly recommend the place. Our only drawback was there was no car park. Plenty of parking on the road except when there is an event on in the village. We found it hard to park while the school fete/sports day was on.

Can’t fault it! Food was so nice, staff are so accommodating and generous in there service which make such a difference to the lots of modern pubs around these days! Kate was so knowledgeable in all the wines and recommended an amazing Malbec. The food was sensational and we had an incredible seabass m, truffle chips and roast on a Sunday, followed by a cheese board that was suggested by Paulo and probably the best we’ve had with a blue cheese that we had to order more of. Made our trip to Box Hill very memorable and will definitely be back- thank you!

This is a traditional pub/restaurant near Box Hill and the décor is reminiscent of a coaching house. The food is, overall only average which is a shame we are started with a stunning first course of scallops that were enormous and so succulent. Unfortunately, the second course of fish pie with mash, turned out to be a lot of mash but very little fish. It was strange that the waiter excused this feedback with the comment “an agency chef made this”. As if that is relevant to the customer. However, the sun was shining and it was a lovely day, so we didn’t make a fuss, and we paid for the mis-represented dish. On another day, I am not sure I would!

After a lovely hike starting on the top of Box hill, we stopped for lunch. We first missed the pub but then parked 100feet finding ourselfs looking to the right to be impressed by a beautiful little view down countryside hills. The pub is beyond cosy, especially the big room in dark wood for private events gives of the impression to just having stepped into an old English gentlemen club. The food is unbelievable and the service superb, waitresses were attentive and very friendly. A superb find.
