Our second meal at The Running Horses, and we were just as delighted as before. This time, we were there to celebrate my sister's birthday. We received a warm welcome from Giovanni, the Restaurant Manager. He recommended the special of the day, King Prawn and Crab Linguine, and the Beef Bourgignon Pie with Creamy Mash and Seasonal Greens from the main menu. Both were superb. Giovanni and one of his colleagues even joined me in singing 'Happy Birthday' to my sister. We look forward to our next visit.

I didn't write favourably about this pub before, so I would like to put it right and say I was wrong. WHAT A REVELATION!!!! The cost of eating out has become pretty much prohibitive now, and sadly, the quality and quantity of dishes served has generally diminished by the same amount as prices have risen. On a whim we decided to treat ourselves to dinner last night at The Running Horses, accepting we'd be disappointed. What a fantastic surprise to be serviced by lovely people, we ordered the cod loin main course - every item on that plate was cooked perfectly and hot. Yes, it was £20 each, but absolutely worth every penny. So much so, we had desserts, and they were not the pub standard dessert, but creative, beautifully presented and didn’t disappoint at all. I haven’t enjoyed a meal out as much for as long as I can remember. Are we going back again, abso-***ing-lutely!

Amazing pub been back twice already. Proper village pub with a lovely roaring fire. Very cosy. It appears to be popular and has a lovely separate restaurant area. The Sunday roasts looked generous. Didn't see anything other than empty plates. Will go back and try out the food for sure. No pub parking - you have to park on the road. If you are desperate to go get here early, so you can find a space. It is popular with walkers and cyclists as Box Hill is nearby.

A fine selection of beers and a good lunchtime menu. A little pricey but the good food, service and atmosphere more than made up for it. £15 for a chicken club sandwich. It was full and very tasty. One of the female managers was quite rude to someone behind the bar while a large group of people were waiting to be served which I was not impressed by. Also, I was very disappointed by the buttermilk chicken starter. While it tasted delicious, the 3 measly bits of chicken and batter was not at all worth the £8.50…absolute joke! Stayed the night here and was really looking forward to it after hearing many good things, especially about the food. Found the staff in the resteraunt/bar to be dismissive and rushed. Almost all the tables had issues with ordering and receiving their food. The menu was missing half the items, so don't expect to be able to order what you want if you do look it up ahead of time. Mains came before our starters, though the starters never actually arrived as they then later claimed they had run out, before serving the same dish to people who ordered after us. After all that, can't say the food is anything memorable. Average pub food you could find almost anywhere without the hefty price tag.Could have simply been an off day, but if it was they weren't remorseful or apologetic.

Although we'd booked a table in the restaurant we were given a table in the bar area. The young man behind the bar said he would bring over our menus, which he did - twenty minutes later! Another twenty minutes passed before he returned to take our drinks order and, realising service was going to be slow, we ordered our food too, a sandwich, a burger and scallops with a side of fries. Fifteen minutes went by before the waitress brought our drinks. After half an hour we asked her when we would be likely to receive our food. She apologised, saying they were understaffed (really?!) and there was only one chef. She returned immediately with a pathetic plate of a few overcooked i.e. burned (but lukewarm) scallops, hidden under a tepid green sauce, without the side of chips. The other dishes had not arrived by the time the scallops had been eaten so I went to the bar to complain. The young man again said they were understaffed and the chef was on his own. Ten minutes later our dishes arrived - the portion of fries that should have come with the scallops, two dry burgers in a bun with a side order of barely warm fries, a pot of coleslaw and some chicken and avocado slapped into a sliced baguette. The total cost of our food, an eye-watering £40.20. Responsibility for this appalling experience lies with the management for allowing inexperienced members of staff to run the restaurant and bar by themselves and to have just one chef in the kitchen while offering a full lunch menu.

It's a pub we've been to many times and has a good ambience. Today we had a surly attitude from a male member of staff when asked (unnecessarily and possibly unlawfully) whether we could PROVE we had an exemption to wearing a mask - it's doubtful anyone could or would want to prove it in the pub and if a customer has a disability it's a private matter. Even though the restaurant and pub were not busy the service was exceptionally slow. Short measure on a glass of beer had to be topped up. We weren't offered a dessert menu so had to go and ask for the bill then left. To top it all the pub phoned to say we hadn't paid yet if they cleared their tables more efficiently they would have seen the money (with minimal tip!)

Good food, but glacial service. We would have stayed for desert if the table had been cleared and desert menu offered. Then we were phoned to say we had left without paying (we left cash in the table- this they had not checked). All in all not a great performance. A shame because we like this venue.

Attempted to visit for food. Pub was empty of customers. Greeted by member of staff who was immediately rude, hostile, racist, and discriminatory. Other member of staff only rude, so better I guess? Went elsewhere. Best avoid unless you want your evening ruined.

Had a fab dinner last night at The Running Horses. Celebrating 5th wedding anniversary with friends and 48 years since we met at Box Hill School! Food was so lovely and service was charming. Fish and chips was fab!

Oh dear oh dear. This was one of my favourite venues. Used to have lovely imaginative menu. No more. Fish and chips. Burger. Steak (£23!) restaurant didn’t even smell very nice. No wonder it was empty. Waitress sweet But not much she could do. I know it’s COVID and the menu is reduced Fair enough. But better to serve one delicious home cooked meal than this dreadful menu dictated apparently By “head office” wherever that is Very sad to see the mighty so fallen

This pub is amazing. My wife and I are staying in the area for a few days and this is the only pub in walking distance . Win win . The food is amazing. Tonight, I had macaroni cheese with mushrooms and bacon . The best macaroni cheese I've ever eaten . My wife had the pie of the day, chicken and bacon, which can only be described as sumptuous. Service is amazing. Every member of staff is interested , attentive, and thoughtful. The attention to detail will blow you away. I wish my local was like this . The food is pure luxury . Not your usual pub fare . It's restaurant food. If you love the best hospitality has to offer, then this pub is for you . It's an absolute gem .

The food was nice (once it came out), but the service was really slow. We had to wait more than an hour for a roast and fish and chips, and it wasn't that busy (about 4 other tables).

The worst experience having breakfast. Ordered a tea and came in takeaway cup sitting in.. with milk and teabag in together. Worst scrambled age I’ve ever seen they were like milk and upon asking the waitress why she replied the chef likes to use undercook them!! The salmon was covered in fat also which hadn’t been cut off when prepared! Awful experience would not recommend as had two bad experiences in this cafe with food.

I took my elderly mum out for lunch and when I asked for a diet coke, I was told that they didn't sell that and all cold drinks were in the cabinet. I asked if they had any other sugar free cold drink. I was told I'd have to look at the cans, or I could have water or a hot drink. I decided therefore to go without. The food = mum ordered the beef and ale pasty. It was so dried up and hard that she could barely cut it with a knife let alone her teeth! I did complain to the waitress who promised to feed back and waited a good 10 minutes or so as I thought someone might show some interest and come over. They didn't! I appreciate that things can go wrong in any business but it's how those things are dealt with that seperates the good from the average. With so many choices locally, can't say I'll be rushing back.
