A warm lunchtime welcome having walked from Rykas. Glad to be offered the table near the log burner. Toasty! Very friendly waitress. Good pint of guest ale from By the Horns. I had the roast duck leg with rich gravy, the kids opted for burgers with chips. One cherry pie, one apple crumble for pudding. Both delicious. Very pleased, will definitely be back!

We dropped in for a pre-Christmas dinner with some friends and went with the Sunday Roast. Absolute 10/10 meal, everything on the plate was delicious. What's even more impressive is that our waitress told us that one of the chefs named Hayden had just started today. Great service, great food and lovely old pub. The only thing I regret is not coming sooner!

One of the best pub meals I've had for a long time. I had a steak and ale pie with veg, and the best gravy I've ever tasted, accompanied by a well kept pint of Surrey Hills Shere Drop. Efficient, polite service from the young man serving, and a cosy bar with a fire on a dreich day. The prices were reasonable for this part of the world and it felt good to support a truly independent pub.

One of the best Sunday roasts I've ever had - the shoulder of lamb was superb. Dessert (apple crumble) was good but a little lacking in flavour (possibly down to the apples or how they were cooked). Still very happy with my meal! Quaint, traditional pub with friendly and warm service. Open fire on cold nights and a beautiful view from the garden. Will definitely go back!

The King William IV is a very pretty pub, just off the A24 close to Mickleham. It was built in 1790 as an estate workers ale house for Cherkley Court, which now is Beaverbrook golf course. The building itself is quite unusual, being multi-level as it is built on the side of a steep hill. The garden is terraced and the stunning view up to Norbury Park, make it one of Surrey's most attractive beer gardens! They sell some excellent local beer in very good condition! I've not eaten there for a long time but from what I've seen going on with the food, it looks very good. Something I'm not a fan of, which puts me off going more often, is the mandatory table service. This is no reflection on the staff, who are swift and friendly but I'm a bit old fashioned and just don't like faff and people fussing over me. The pub doesn't have a lot of standing room, the bar itself is small and the staff get very busy with food service; so it makes perfect sense if it's a group or you're ordering food/getting repeat drinks orders during a meal, to be served at table. However, in my case, I'm just there for the beer, either solo or in a pair and would really prefer to just buy a pint or two at the bar at take a seat! Instead, you have to be seated and given a menu, then they return for your order, come back with the drink/s, turning into a forth visit with change, should you wish to pay with cash. Bit of a rigmarole for a pint! That's just my personal gripe but this is a lovely pub worth visiting!

I came for the first time for Sunday lunch with family and despite it being incredibly busy and us not having booked we were treated with warmth. The waitresses were so lovely, smiley and attentive. The chefs were great- we had the lamb, a gluten free lamb, roast beef and risotto; the lamb was so delicious, the roast potatoes were crunchy and fluffy and the gluten free roast had gluten free gravy! The beef and risotto were also delicious! The manager was also proactive and helpful! The only down side is that it’s a difficult building to traverse with a physical disability- but that is just as it’s an old building. Salads were delicious, excellent burgers (chicken and beef), very generous filling in the wonderful prawn sandwich. Only the beef nachos where there was room for improvement. The food is great, and right up until we asked for the bill, so was the service. We had commented earlier on in our meal that it was a bit odd that the waiting staff obviously didn't have their own areas to look after. We got offered drinks by 3 different people and menus by 2, all within the first 5 minutes of sitting down. Everyone was rushing around us and each one stopped to ask if we needed anything... It was great but a bit overkill. But then our mains got cleared and we asked for the bill. We waited 20 minutes before we stopped a different waitress to ask again. She seemed to understand our urgency and rushed off to get it.. Then nothing. 15 minutes later we realised the section we were sat in had seen no member of staff in that time. All the tables around us were covered in empty plates and glasses, and a few faces starting to look impatient. We could see the staff scurrying around up the stairs but not a single one of them ventured down to our section. We decided to go to the bar to pay directly, but we're swiftly told to go back to the table and the bill was coming. 25 minutes goes by and nothing...at this point I was beginning to feel like a hostage. Having worked in catering in my past, I always try to be understanding, but this really started to feel like we were being purposefully ignored. It all ended when we walked in to the one area of the restaurant that was getting attention and just stood there asking to pay. All I can say is, do what most other restaurants do. Give your waiting staff responsibility for sections... Of course they can all help each other out, but there needs to be one person accountable for the service of the patrons.

Just popped in for a drink yesterday with our son who had come over to see us. When we got in we went to the bar to be greeted by an ignorant flapping man (may have been the landlord) who was extremely ignorant informing us they were to busy to serve us. I explained it was only a drink we were after and not food he replied that he would need to do these 3 tickets and get a table free of which there were a few inside an out at the time. I said again that it was only a drink and not food and left it at that. What a horrible experience from a pub that I had told our son was a hidden gem in Surrey. How disappointing.
