I have been to Box Hill hiking several times already. I have to say that King William is a nice place to have lunch. However, if you are not vegan, don’t try the vegetarian dish; go for the meat. Their meat is way much better than the Vegetarian dish.

We had a lovely Easter at The King William IV pub. The Sunday roast was divine, especially the slow-cooked lamb shoulder and the deep-fried calamari – both were outstanding. The setting is beautiful, surrounded by hills, cows, and horses, and the nearby playground was perfect for our little one. The pub has a charming, historic feel with a relaxed atmosphere. Staff were friendly and attentive, and the focus on quality over quantity really shows. Highly recommended!

DON'T STOP HERE!!!! This place is well positioned to do exactly what they did to us. They fleeced us £7.50 for a pint of beer and £14 for a double rum and coke. Stuck in the middle of the Surry hills, right on the box hill trail. They have a captive audience who have little other choice than to pay whatever they charge. They were confused when we walked in and sat at the table and then said they'd move us if they got busy because we were only getting drinks. The dining area was empty and we were made to feel totally unwelcome. Not only that, the rather overside, red checked man behind the bar was rude. Take your own drinks and stop somewhere beautiful on the trail. You won't be poor after and you'll be happy too.

Me and a friend were here from London and visited on a Saturday afternoon whilst doing the hike around Box Hill. Luckily we had booked the day before because it was super busy and we did see a few people get turned away. It was a warm, sunny day so we chose to sit in the garden which has beautiful views! The staff were rushed off their feet but service was still ok and quick to take orders. We ordered the BLT and fish finger sandwich with sticky toffee pudding afterwards. Food was lovely and fast to come out. This place was a highlight of our day trip and we would definitely visit if we was down this way

Incredibly rude staff - we came in without a booking and were treated extremely rudely, as if we were out of order just for asking politely if they had space for us to have a drink. I understand that they were busy but there is no excuse for speaking to customers like that. Not especially intelligent either as we would otherwise have been repeat customers, as regular visitors to the area, but will now avoid. Would not recommend.

We went hoping to have a quick drink and a bite. The waitress looking after the bookings was one of the rudest and most unhelpful I have ever met. There were tonnes of unreserved tables and she refused to seat us or to tell us how long a table might. She sneered at us throughout the conversation and just generally was completely dire. The service was also very good, so we were very well looked after. They don't accept tips when paying by card so take cash if you want to show gratitude. Our only criticisms were the slightly limited drinks list and undrinkable coffee, which was a shame. Also the toilets are very basic but clean and stocked. Stopped for lunch on a Friday with 3 friends, after a walk along the Mickleham Gallops. We sat round a table in the garden in the sunshine, and enjoyed the peaceful setting with a view over the Mole valley. We ordered a range of drinks and light meals (crab pate, duck salad and BLT sandwich) and they were all delicious. The service (Federica) was quick and efficient. The pub is on a steep hill and the garden has terraces and steps, so it would not be ideal for those with mobility issues. Remember to bring cash because (a) the pub does not want tips paid on a bank card, and (b) you WILL want to tip!

The perfect quirky English pub, tucked away up a narrow country lane (parking a slight challenge). We found a genuine warm welcome for our whole family (toddler and small dog included) after a walk on Box Hill. Service was bright and charming at the table with just the right amount of attentive. A shared aperitif of cheesy chips and halloumi took the edge off and the Sunday roast appeared shortly afterwards. My Chicken was great and the silence and empty plates at the end of the main course a testimony to great food. The cinnamon apples really deserved a proper home cooked buttery crumble, but all in all a great end to a lovely day.

The King William IV is a very pretty pub, just off the A24 close to Mickleham. It was built in 1790 as an estate workers ale house for Cherkley Court, which now is Beaverbrook golf course. The building itself is quite unusual, being multi-level as it is built on the side of a steep hill. The garden is terraced and the stunning view up to Norbury Park, make it one of Surrey's most attractive beer gardens! They sell some excellent local beer in very good condition! I've not eaten there for a long time but from what I've seen going on with the food, it looks very good. Something I'm not a fan of, which puts me off going more often, is the mandatory table service. This is no reflection on the staff, who are swift and friendly but I'm a bit old fashioned and just don't like faff and people fussing over me. The pub doesn't have a lot of standing room, the bar itself is small and the staff get very busy with food service; so it makes perfect sense if it's a group or you're ordering food/getting repeat drinks orders during a meal, to be served at table. However, in my case, I'm just there for the beer, either solo or in a pair and would really prefer to just buy a pint or two at the bar at take a seat! Instead, you have to be seated and given a menu, then they return for your order, come back with the drink/s, turning into a forth visit with change, should you wish to pay with cash. Bit of a rigmarole for a pint! That's just my personal gripe but this is a lovely pub worth visiting!
