The Rum Kitchen Brighton in Brighton and Hove

Staff was unfriendly and messed up our food order. Except the main waiter guy who was very polite and looked after us when we arrived. Food was delayed by 50mins-1 hour, and food orders were totally messed up! People at our table who arrived 15 mins ago, got their food delivered to the table, while we arrived 1 hour before that, and got our food last at the table! Food was tasteless, had no spice on the roast chicken. Our pre-paid deposit was not deducted from our bill, as promised and we had to chase it for 1 week every day after we left the restaurant, when eventually they returned it. Ordered a mocktail, but it came out with alcohol. They told me that I would get 2for1 as per their 'sale' before I ordered my drink, but after it came out, was only 1 drink and they said it's not included in the sale. The music was so loud that we could not hear the people sitting across from us at the same table, which was really disappointing. We had pre-paid a deposit of £20 which they said would be deducted from our bill. The waitress at the till has claimed it's been deducted already from our bill. It wasn't! They asked us to make full payment and kept our "refundable" deposit on top! Told us they will arrange with their Head Office to process a refund back to us. We have chased them for 1 week after we left calling nearly every day, being told different things all the time, the money did not come still! In our frustration we threatened to contact their Head Office for their lack of assistance, which resulted in getting the refund within 24 hours! I ordered a non-alcoholic cocktail, came with alcohol. They replaced it, thankfully.

It was our first day of our little break in Brighton and it was blowing a gale and chucking down with rain. Nevertheless as a lover of rum and West Indian food we fought the elements from our hotel. What a choice it was. Mina who was looking after us during our stay was very attentive and friendly. The food was out of this world really cooked lovely washed down with a few rounds of cocktails 2 for 1 what more could we want on a very wet and blowy evening in Brighton We will come again and hopefully the sun will be shinning😀

Don't usually like to write bad reviews - but these feels like a public service. Visited with 6 friends for drinks on a Friday night. The massive space (was a Jamie Oliver joint a few years ago) was very empty and so the staff seemed to be amusing themselves by chatting and laughing at the bar - and not paying much attention to serving. Lights were overly bright (think retail park eaterie ambience) and the music was from the late 90's / early noughties (Robbie Williams, Bryan Adams) cranked up to a just 'shout to make yourself heard' volume. Unnecessary on such a quiet night and not the music choice I was expecting from a rum and Caribbean themed bar particularly when the decor is all from Caribbean record labels. Despite the large number of staff, 3 of the tables around us weren't cleared down with the glasses of previous customers and stayed that way the two hours we were there. Toilets were filthy with paper and water all over the floor. That's the customer's fault but the staff were obviously having too much fun chatting to actually go check. Drinks were poorly made. A mojito was bitter and under-sugared and their mule version had some slight ginger taste but no kick or spice. In despair we asked for a Dark 'n' Stormy as an absolute classic rum cocktail and was told it 'was not on the list'. These people are *not* rum specialists. A beer drinking friend was told that they 'run out' but 'he could have gin and tonic'. You could console yourself with the fact that the cocktails were on the cheaper side for Brighton (£10) and when we arrived there was a 2 for 1 deal going on. The price was really the only saving grace. A poor experience.

Absolute disgrace! I went with my 18th at old daughter. The middle aged ‘manager’ kept looking over at her,making her feel uncomfortable. He then made an inappropriate suggestive comment as she walked by. This is sexual harassment and is unacceptable in this day and age. I will be warning all my female friends about this .

Had a cepebratory date night in here. Had never been before and was very impressed! The flavours of the food were absolutely unreal... Not to mention the amazing service from Johnathan to top it all off! Brilliant cocktails and food....Thank you Rum Kitchen!

The place only had a few tables with guests, I counted 3. However, it took 20 mins to flag someone over to take our drinks order even though there were a few staff pottering around the bar area. An hour later starters were delivered by the chef, got the impression no one else was going to bring them other than the poor lady who was responsible for our ‘area’. 1 hour 48 minutes later still no mains. We complained, waitress said it was her responsibility even though we said she’s the only person appearing to be actually working. Manager intervened, accused us of shouting at his staff. Totally the opposite, we told her she was too good for this place and she shouldn’t be taking the blame. Manager needs a crash course in customer service before he condemns the place to failure. He could also dress like a manager and not so casual like he’s having a drink in his local Wetherspoons. We told them to cancel the mains and we would settle for what we have had. No discount offered. To make matters worse one of us got charged twice as they said the first transaction failed. It didn’t! Now waiting on a refund. I honestly think this is a contender for Ramsey kitchen nightmares, was expecting a camera crew to come out. Alas, just a pathetically poor experience and a manager who genuinely thought they were doing well. The food that we got was decent but the rest of it was awful

We came to the rum kitchen today food and drinks were very good however seemed like only 2 people were working , I was served by Jody but when she was busy Gabbie had made sure we weren’t sitting around for ages with no one and helped us out with whatever we needed , however it was very hard to get the other staffs attention and it seemed as though they were taking many smoking breaks or just standing around. Starting with the positives ... the food was lovely. It was hot, the jerk bowl was delicious, fries seasoned perfectly, and the passion fruit cheesecake was to die for! Huge portion and very fresh, not sure about the random rich tea biscuit on top though! What let the restaurant down was the service. We had our table booked for 20:00 and sent a pre order previously for 11 of us, unfortunately a couple of people cancelled on the night which seemed to have caused many problems for the staff. they couldn't find what pre order to cancel and had to take everyone's orders again. We got our drinks fairly quick but we had to wait around hoping someone would ask if we were ready for our food but no, we waited till 20:30 and then we had to ask if we could start with the food. our starters arrived about 21:15 and we were all starving prior to this. the staff weren't attentive at all, forgetting drinks and were too busy chatting with each other rather than serving us. oh and there were only two other tables booked in the restaurant so it wasn't even busy and there were plenty of staff looking bored! we were there over 3 hours not necessarily by choice but due to such shockingly slow service! The staff let the place down because the food was wonderful, such a shame.

Absolutely fantastic and was so well looked after, Joel is a legend and very customer focused. It was an absolute delight, extremely well looked after and great food! 100% will be going again!!

Came here for bottomless brunch, was a bit empty but staff were pretty attentive in regards to being more drinks. Food was fine but do wish there could have been a little more variety with what was on offer with the main food. But very good variety with the premium brunch drink options!

Didn't realise this restaurant was here until we came it across it on a recent visit to Brighton. Our waitress was attentive & friendly, the service was quick, the food was delicious, my son particularly liked the chips & the cocktails were something else! We will def be back.

Terribly slow. If they are going to offer home delivery they should work on the way it takes over an hour preparing it. Might be lovely in the actual restaurant (if you haven’t left or died) but by the time it gets to home we have given up being hungry and it’s cold. Twice was two times too many.
