I loooove this place! Me and my friends used to sit out the back in the summer when he had the garden and chat and listen to vinyls, eating delicious jerk chicken, dumplings and prawns. The guy is clearly passionate about his food, and he’s always really friendly and smiley. He makes a delicious jerk dipping sauce which goes really well with the dumplings. This place is great for some wholesome, tasty food that’s been made with love.

Was going to get Chinese but that take out was shut. Walked further up the road and the owner operator (Roy?) was so lovely i had to stop and check out his food. Asking for vegan he has a wide choice. Eating it all at home the food was great. Right amount of spice and tasty. Roy may be moving premises soon. I will make sure to know where he is for fine food

My eldest has finally left uni. Her last supper in Brighton before we set off for London was the jerk chicken from Back A Yard. She wanted something tasty and filing. We had the BBQ Jerk Chicken with rice and peas. Absolutely delicious. Some salad, coleslaw and hot sauce. The dumplings are amazing with the hot sauce. Very helpful guy there. Really friendly. Needed an allen key to take down a bed frame and lent one to me. Thank you so much. You deserve all the success in the world. Keep up the hard work. Drove past finally at 10.45pm and the place was still open. This is not a sit in restaurant.

Went here and got jerk chicken and rice because they ran out of curry mutton. I got presented with some kind of children’s boneless box meal of dry break in a spineless jerk sauce. A real disappointment. Worse still, I suspect it’s because the chef on the day had the notion, ‘white people don’t do bones’ stop embarrassing yourself and ask in future. My other half is Jamaican I thought I’d come check it out and see if it passed before I suggested it as a weekend takeaway, glad I did, she’d have brought it back.

I'm finding it difficult to write this bad review, because the staff at the shack were lovely, but the food was extremely disappointing. We ordered the set menu for 2. The jerk chicken was a bit dry and the rice and the veg curry were a bit bland. We asked them to swap out the hard food for a side of the same price, or just anything else as we wouldn't eat it, they didn't. I did enjoy the goat curry in moderation and the fried dumplings dipped into this red sauce they gave me were actually delicious. I love jerk chicken and this wasn't up to scratch, in my opinion. However, the other reviews say differently, so I'm willing to give them another shot.

Stopped by to pick up a takeaway as my partner had been before and said it was good. We were not disappointed. We had to wait as they were busy but they gave us pots of food to taste, a nice touch and it was lovely. I had the veg curry rice n' peas and my partner had jerk chicken rice n' peas, dumplings and coleslaw. Food was amazing. Really tasty and filling. I can't wait to go back as I really enjoyed it. I'm told it's authentic as my partner's family are Jamaican so she knows and she's been to her home country. That's a good recommendation for me! Be prepared to wait, it's a small business and they're popular so busy. The staff were lovely and chatty which I like.

This was one of the worst meals we've had. The curry goat, didn't taste of curry more like a stew. It was spooned out of a plastic bucket, with goat curry written on it, leading us to believe that this is factory made in vast quantities, as it was so bad it couldn't have been home made. We had to recook it adding curry powder to give it some flavour! The veg curry was just as bad and the salt fish and ackee also left a lot to be desired. It was the least authentic Caribbean food I've tasted, My family is from Guyana, so I know what it should taste like.

We tried this recently for the first time. As a family we are jamaican and lived there in the past, we usually find it quite difficult to find an authentic and reliable carribean food in brighton. Looks like we found one! The service was good and friendly. We got to taste a variety of different soups and curries while we waited. All of which were delicious and we will have to order them next time. Jerk chicken was good with a hotter sauce as a side for the option. Ackee and saltfish was amazing. Rice and peas tastes like Grandma had made it. Perfect. We also had plantain and dumplings which filled up our bellys nicely. We will be back soon. Thank you.

Has to be the best Caribbean food in brighton I would say 9/10 and that's only due to the fact I was comparing the macaroni pie to Barbados macaroni pie having lived there. The food did not disappoint I was very impressed with the veg curry the rice and peas plantain and look forward to eating here again. Whilst waiting the boss man gave us a sample of the jerk chicken and the sweet yet spicy flavours coming through made me want more.

I ordered food from Back-A-Yard for the second time last night and once again the food was delivered half an hour late. the food was ordered at 8:05pm and was supposed to arrive at 9:15pm but it finally arrived at 9:45pm. At around 9:20pm I decided to try and contact the establishment but they were busy on the phone and continued to be busy on the phone until the food actually arrived. I ordered one portion of the goat curry and dumplings and to make up for the delay they had added 2 extra dumplings to my order so I didn't bother to complain at the time because I was too hungry to care. The goat curry wasn't even that exciting as it consisted of chunks of meat in a watery soup with a few tiny chunks of vegetables. 6 quid for that?! Nah mate. Then, at around 3am this morning I woke up with stomach pains and new instantly that I needed to use the toilet. This was obviously because of the food from Back-A-Yard as i hadn't eaten anything else that evening. 100% will not be ordering from this takeaway ever again, complete waste of money.

I had heard mixed reviews of back-a-yard but being a lover a turtle bay and walking past one afternoon absolutely famished my boyfriend and I decided to give it a go.We browsed the menu which had a list of 'mains' with a description of all being 'served with rice and peas and a salad' and priced between £6 and £11 each. I decided to go for the fried chicken with coconut sauce and my boyfriend went for the classic jerk chicken. When we went to order we were charged a ridiculous £21 for the two which were supposedly £6.50 each?! Apparently the rice and peas were an additional £3.50 each and the coconut sauce an additional £1. Being hungry and hungover I decided to let it go and we left. When we got home to eat I opened my box to find 2 very small fried chicken drumsticks, curry sauce NOT coconut sauce and some really dry rice and kidney beans. My boyfriend had the same and although the jerk was nice it was very little meat and lots of gristle. I would NOT recommend going here. I am not sure how and who they decide to rip off but I was absolutely seething and so hungry I had to make dinner afterwards anyway. The salad comes in a tiny pot almost the size of a dip pot from papa johns! I will never be visiting again. I love Jamaican food but sorely disappointed with the massive dishonesty and utter disregard for providing quality food and service. Appalling, dry and an expensive mistake!

My boyfriend and I love it here. The food is absolutely incredible and the man who runs it is the kindest, most accommodating runner of a business I've ever come across. Food is always stunning, whether you eat out or at home. When a small mistake was made, the (presuming) manager rectified it instantly and it just makes you want to go back. Honestly, 10/10 would recommend!!

I have been tempted with caribbean food in the past, but I am not someone who likes really spicy food. My colleague suggested we go, and I agreed, thinking I would only have Rice and Peas (not just for "spice fear", but I wasn't all that hungry. When we arrived, the owner Roy was exactly what you would want...passionate, kind and very talented. I ordered my Rice and Peas, and while we waited Roy offered us a sample of the chicken. My world changed! lol! The chicken was light, succulent and full of amazing flavour. I changed my order on the spot and went for the Jerk Chicken and Rice and Peas. I also got the Coconut Sauce (as it is mild), and the Jerk Sauce (to face my "spice fear"), as well as Coleslaw. The meal came with a small Salad too. I polished it all off! And I wasn't even hungry! Seriously, this place is a gem. The food is truly sensational. All the flavours are full and spot on. I even had the Jerk Sauce and enjoyed it a lot, but personally I'm more of a Coconut Sauce girl....but that's just me. I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu.

Arrive to a small queue, giving me time to choose from their menu, guy behind the counter looked incredible miserable, no greeting / acknowledgement what so ever. When It finally come to my time to order (which took a fair amount of time considering they're food is already ready to be boxed up and sent) one of the owners mates decideds hes going to push straight past me and order.. The cook still ignoring me proceeds to prepair food for his mate whilst they enjoyed a bit of banter about some night before.. I didn't stick about, so left hungry and a bit pissed off. I suggest Cummin Up, if you want a better selection of food and better service.
