Went to island takeaway for my first time, there isn’t a lot of Caribbean shops in Brighton so I had high hopes. The store gave off authentic Jamaican vibes, however that was the only thing authentic about this shop. I originally tried to order a oxtail and was told they didn’t have any (no real surprise tbh). Then I asked what do you have and was told “you tell me what you want and I’ll let you know” which was just not helpful as they didn’t have what I wanted. The only ended up having 5/9 mains available. I got the large curry goat and rice peas for £15 which isn’t a horrendous price if the large was actually large but it wasn’t. When I tried to foot the rice was over cooked with the peas being cooked to the point they were dry and the rice was very hard. The curry goat was pink which definitely threw me off. Plus the meat was cleaned properly as there was a lot of gore and guts in the bones which completely ruined it. However, the flavour of the food was good but I would certainly of skipped out on this meal if I had the choice.

Just don't bother. I pre-ordered to collect on my way home from work. Website took ages to load (once money and been taken from my account) and then crashed. No answer from restaurant phone line. When I went to collect, they had not received my order. I was very unhelpfully told to contact "yoyo". In hindsight, I'm pretty glad I didn't have food from here. The front of the shop where food is kept warm was filthy. The man (presumably chef) didn't look like the cleanest person and scores on the doors says they scored zero last month. So probably a lucky escape.

Pop in here occasionally on my lunch break and it never disappoints. The jerk chicken is unreal.

I’ve been coming to this place for a Little while now never had an issue but the last 3 times I’ve been to this place the prices I’m sure he just makes them up on the customer as he’s been going up every time and wen asked about it he laughs and says everything’s gone up (kinda hard to believe as I was only there the week before and he said the same thing then) this time the chicken was terrible I’m more then sure it was this place that gave me food poisoning . Can’t say it’ll ever be seeing me again lost a customer over £3-4

Ordered guiness punch which was £4.00 instead got a can of Pineapple soda . Phoned them and was told next time we give the punch. What !!!! ??? How will they remember next time. I really do not believe so a can of pineapple soda cost me £4.00.NOT HAPPY. Please check ur order before the delivery guy scarpers.

It's nice food but nothing special. For the money there's much better value; £12 for a single takeaway tub of (chicken on the bone) curry and rice is average at best.

I'm pretty obsessed by goat curry and have tried everywhere in Brighton & Hove that serves it and plenty of places in london too - this is hands down the best goat curry I've ever eaten. I buy it weekly and followed him from Cummins Up on Preston circus. Island take away is no frills authentic Jamaican experience, it looks pretty basic but don't be put off because the food is incredible!

We were looking for a takeaway with flavour! Bored with bland Indian and Chinese takeaways, we were really pleased with our takeaway from Island! A really healthy portion, and very tasty! Oneil is a friendly fella and we had a good chat whilst he was serving. Island will now be a regular Friday night for us now.

This place is really nice, the jerk chicken is amazing the rice and peas are perfect and the customer service is the best, also my dad said hes had pattys in peckham, brixton, harlesdon and notting hill and this was the best chicken patty he had I recommend eating here if you want some healthy authentic Jamaican food

The curry goat looked like it had gone off ! The rice and peas was definitely rotten! It tasted soo bad like it been sat in the fridge for weeks, never experienced anything like! It's actually upsetting to think someone would serve this to a customer... shocking What a waste of money, never again going back!!

I collected my saltfish and ackee - it was ready on time and was piping hot. As good as home cooking! Highly recommended! Reasonably priced too...

Curry Goat is a favourite and we had that, plantain, dumplings and gravy and it was excellent - Recommended. Can’t comment on delivery times as I collected but I’d go again!!

The food was amazing, really well priced for the area and quality was perfect. Everything was cooked fresh to order, well packaged and delivered. I really enjoyed the chicken roti and macaroni, tasted so authentic. I would suggest this place to anyone was really worth popping in and supporting your local. The service was warm and friendly and the online system to order and collect was straight forward and easy to use. Overall very happy with the food and would definitely come back again

We've used island takeaway a few times but each time the delivery time takes longer. Tonight, our food was an hour and half late. When it does arrive it is tasty, but sadly the service let's it down so we won't be using it again...unless we order at 5pm for dinner at 8

I phoned my order through for collection as curry goat is always the first dish to sell out. The man I spoke to was cheery and friendly taking my order for collection. I ordered the curry goat with rice and pea and jerk chicken with jollof rice. We arrived to collect our order and were met with the same pleasant and friendly customer service from the staff. The food was delicious. The only thing I could say is change would be just having a little more of the sauce from the curry goat as it didn’t have enough for my liking. The meat we had was a fair amount for the portion, not for the fussy ones that like meat off the bone though, but I don’t mind it myself. Lol. Thanks again for a great meal and fantastic service.

Sorry but the food was bland and basically horrible. Dumplings inedible. Most of it ended up in the bin. One of the worst Caribbean eating experiences I've ever had.

Ordered online and Collected the takeaway for the family we’ve all got a smile on our face great food shame delivery was unavailable due issues with current driver but that wasn’t an issue food was ready to collect with in 15 mins and tasted amazing for first time experience

Ordered from here tonight using uber eats. It arrives 15 mins late, which is ok because we cant have it all. BUT the food arrives and the first thing we realise is that one of the jerk chickens with rice we ordered wasnt delivered. We contacted ubereats and got a refund (thanks uber!). Then we eat. So.. we ordered dumplings, they were dry and tasteless. We ordered more dumplings with gravy. Now my understanding of gravy is that it is some sort of sauce, but this was essentially some chopped cabbage served dry with some seasoning. We ordered jerk wings. Apparently 6 wings per portion, we only got 4 and they tasted sickeningly sweet. We decided to split the jerk chicken and rice and peas for our main. Now we have eaten a lot of this before, and never have we tasted one like this. It tasted like someone had cooked some chicken, put some spicy seasoning on it, mixed it up with a jar of uncle Ben's sweet and sour sauce and chucked it in a tub. The nicest bit of the meal was the rice. So we are giving the place a star rating of one, purely for the rice. Dont bother ordering from this place. With so many good food places in Brighton we are left wondering why we bothered with this one in the first place. P.s. see picture for the gravy...

Far beyond dissapointed! £7.50's worth of food was edible out of a £26 order!! I'm a lifelong vegetarian and we placed an all veggie order but for some reason they put a chicken dish in one of the bags!! So first of all i ended up getting chicken all over my hands where the sauce had leaked but it had also leaked over 1 box of plantain and one of the veggie dishes, so they had to go in the bin...the outside bin - i dont want chicken in my house or my bin!! Then there was salt fish in the akee with dumpling - its on the menu as just akee - so that was also inedible. I ordered a veggie patty and got...erm, cooked vegetables in a tortilla wrap, so that was a soggy mess of something i didnt order...and also had to go in the bin...by this point i was worried what might be in the food anyway as they'd incorrectly sent a meat dish. I really wanted a patty!! The banana frutters were literally inedible! You couldnt cut, tear or bite them, you just literally couldnt eat them, they were indestructable! One of the dumplings was yummy and the guiness punch was lovely. The one veggie run down we could eat was...kinda ok but not great. The flavour was kinda there but honestly it was literally just cabbage. On top of that it was at least half an hour late so we waited for an hour and a half for half a rundown, one dumpling and a punch!! Shame!

Of all the 7 deadly sins, I find deceit the most unforgivable. Having ordered a meal at around 19:30. Once the order was confirmed, I was promised a delivery time of 21:15, a relatively long time to wait for a takeaway, however I was happy to wait as I was hungry and craving some sweet Caribbean sustenance. I even rearranged my plans with a friend, so determined was I to taste some jerk. The monumental moment came, but no food arrived. Being a reasonable man, I allowed the driver some extra time. It got to 21:30, 15 minutes late so I rang the restaurant. The woman I spoke to on the phone seemed to have very little interest in my situation, and dryly replied that my food was on the way as the driver had left '20 minutes ago'. (I decided to ignore the fact that I only live 10 minutes away from the restaurant) I allowed some more time before I contacted Just Eat, who in turn contacted Island Takeaway. I'm unaware of what was said between the restaurant and Just Eat, however I can only assume the conversation consisted of more fictions created by the deceitful food peddlers. By 22:00, I had become sufficiently irate, as I was being continuously assured that my food was on the way however, I had my doubts. Then the worst imaginable occurred. My order was cancelled. The restaurant had led me on, lying through their teeth for almost one whole hour. No reason given, and the woman from Just Eat agreed that the restaurant had lied to both of us. Turns out the only thing being cooked up tonight were LIES. I thought the jerk was going to be exclusively chicken based, turns out the jerks were running the joint.

This food was so tasty that I wolfed it down. Excellent spicy baseline that was not too overpowering. Tasted very fresh and healthy. Definitely would have again. Friendly staff as well.

We ordered jerk chicken, coleslaw, dumpling and plantain through deliveroo. I have never tasted Caribbean food like it. It was tasty and delicious. The food was still hot. I will be ordering again and will try other dishes from the menu. I am glad i ordered from here. I will be ordering again. Absolutely amazing.

He estado buscando una buena comida para llevar estilo caribeño, y esto no fue una decepción.Teníamos el pollo y el curry de cabra con arroz y plátanos. Fue increíble, una lata de coca para rematar las especias realmente le agregó. Un montón de salsa con el Jerk, y los precios eran bastante buenos también.Comimos en la tienda de comida para llevar, pero me imagino que la comida para llevar es igual de buena.Muy recomendable, volveré esta semana!

Having never been to Jamaica this is the closest I can imagine you'd get to it on Edward Street. The pub next door allows their patrons to bring in food which gives you three choices; 1. eat in 2. take out 3. pub my picture sums it up.. their food was too good to wait before taking a picture. The Chicken was succulent, mildly spicey and moorish. The Ox tail had little meat to offer but the flavours were delicious. The service and attitude was authentic which spares every bit of attention to be spent on the food. Energy which isn't wasted.
