We went tonight, family of 4. Starters, Onion Bhaji and Pakora. Absolutely phenomenal. Mains were Tikka Masala, Pathia and Dansak. As a group we all thought It all tasted so fresh and full of flavour. By far the best Indian in Bristol. The staff accommodated us with short notice, we were greeted very politely, a real very friendly group of gentleman. When leaving the staff including the bar man all said goodbye and thankyou. Fantastic manners. I can’t recommend this place enough.

Really lovely evening out, the food was great with big portions both me and my partner had to take leftovers home! It was also incredible value for money and the staff were super friendly. Best restaurant in Bristol for a romantic evening or a catch up with friends.

Felt like we were in a fast food restaurant- waiter’s falling over themselves plonking food on the table and Swiping it away before we had finished our meal - waiter kept trying to top up my gin with the tonic water three times when I clearly asked him not to. Avoid their Wednesday night five course special, may as well go to McDonald’s for a fraction of the cost

We came to celebrate my friends birthday, the food was ok , didn’t particularly like the restaurant as it felt small and cramped downstairs. The waiter who served us was quite abrupt and the other waiters didn’t seem happy either, found it hard to crack a smile. Definitely will not be back will stick to the Taj Brasserie up the road.

Visited on a Wednesday evening for the 5 course menu. Advertising online at £13.95 but charging £15.95. The place was busy at 7:30pm. We had average at best food, rushed and such surly service… smile please!! My main gripe was being told we needed to keep our used cutlery for all courses!! Really?? Anyway, if in a group we may have not noticed, but as a couple there were many cracks. Ok for the money paid.

Went on a Thursday evening and it was nice to see the place busy - giving it a good atmosphere. Good popodums with a good selection of dips/pickles Starters - excellent lamb chops and a very good chicken and mango dish Mains - Chicken Madras and Chicken Rezala. Both had an excellent sauce but, unfortunately, the meat was dry (overcooked). That was disappointing.

The food was good, but felt the restaurant lacked ambiance / atmoshere. Would also say that not so welcoming as other restaurants visited. Felt it was good value overall.

Food was lovely but the waiter seemed really miserable and only smiled when it came to us paying. Asked for some containers to take the leftovers home but got snapped at when I asked for 5 that we would be charged 50p per container which was a bit of a joke seeing as there was five of us eating and my total bill was well over £100. The table next to us asked for containers and it wasn’t mentioned to them about the extra charge. Don’t think we will bother going back to be far he clearly didn’t like us even tho we were polite and courteous at all times

Food was good, arrival of food was in good time, the seating area seemed like a quick couples corner not part of the main restaurant, the waiter kept wanting to take our plates even though we had not finished our meal, he asked us more than 3 times within 20 minutes, felt like they just wanted to get us out

Booked a table for 9 people the staff were great ( just a bit stinky on the popperdoms only 1 each so had to ask for more . Apart from that everyone enjoyed there meals.

Outstanding restaurant. Simply superb, as well as being friendly and attractive. We were not in the area for fun - visiting patient at the Frenchay rehabilitation unit. So our expectations of the Taj were not high. What a surprise. Everything was fresh, delicious and plentiful. Almost too plentiful. I especially recommend one of the speciality dishes, Dhum Gosht, a sort of casserole of incredibly high quality lamb cooked under a chapati lid. One of the best things I’ve ever had in an Indian restaurant in the UK. Ignore the negative reviews that appear here. We either came on a freak night, or they were from people who have no idea about food.

First time visit for this restaurant. Came with a very good friend who visits frequently & recommended this Indian to us knowing how much I love Indian food. It certainly did live up to my expectations of a great quality restaurant offering authentic Indian cuisine. They use proper spices, good quality meat & good wine. Great ambience. Definitely recommend.

Ordered chef recommendation: chicken tikka masala - red coloured thick sugar syrup chicken pieces received. Disgusting. That’s not what chicken tikka is and I am sure they know that. Waste of every penny.

Writing this the morning (after the night before) and we are discussing how nice the food is. It is so tasty, light and fresh - hard to explain, you need to experience it for yourself. The staff are very friendly and are happy to explain the dishes to you. If you don’t think you like Indian food, give this one a try and you might change your mind!

New Years Eve this year was particularly memorable for us - we hit a major pot hole on Beacon Lane at 3pm, bursting my car tyre and forcing me to drive the car onto the front parking of the Royal Raj restaurant. While we were there, at least 5 other cars hit the same pot hole and burst tyres. The weather could not have been worse and we were drenched waiting first for the AA to come out, then a mobile tyre guy. When the staff arrived at the restaurant and parked next to me, I explained what had happened and apologised for taking up a large proportion of the parking on such a busy day for them. The young man was so kind, he invited us to come in out of the rain to wait for the AA. Hours later, I went inside and asked if there was any way we could be squeezed in to eat a hot meal while we waited for the tyre guy. We were seated immediately and the food was amazing (as always). I can only say that the food here is as tasty as the staff are kind. We were treated with such compassion that it made a very tough day bearable. Thank you to everyone at the Royal Raj.

We visited here as a large group of friends, we were warmly welcomed and well looked after all evening. The food was amazing and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. Would definitely return again soon.

Husband loves curry so thought we’d try here for his birthday. I rang to book but got cut off and received an automated text asking me to reply to book. Did so and received an acknowledgement message in reply. Turned up and they had no knowledge of my booking. Shows to a table able much discussion among staff. Given a menu and almost I immediately asked what we wanted to drink. Very quickly asked for our food order. Too quickly so had to send waiter away. Food itself was very nice. Hot fresh flavoursome. However in the theme of everything being a rush the waiter tried to clear plates away while we were still eating. We will come again but would prefer a more relaxed approach by the staff as it was very rushed. We sat down at 18:40 and had our bill by 19:40!

The waiter seemed annoyed at us having a baby, she's a good baby, had a couple moans but otherwise quiet with a popodom to munch on! Could hear him sighing as he left to make our order. Felt awkward as soon as we entered. Wish we had just left. The food was okay, probably would have tasted better if we didn't feel so unwelcome! We won't be going back.

Never been treated as though we were not wanted at a restaurant before now. There were only 2 other tables of people, but the waiter acted as though we were annoying him. he was very arrogant and up himself and gave off a look down his nose at us feel. 7pm on a Thursday so very quiet. food was just okay ish bit gloopy but too much colouring on 1 of the dishes. The poppadom's were okay but the condiments not as fresh as i would have liked. The manager needs to go and see somewhere like the Saffron restaurant that is very welcoming and the food is tasty. They need to up their game if they want people to return. we wont be going for a few years when they change staff!

Best British Indian restaurant ever been to. The food tasted incredibly fresh & flavoursome, have never tasted quality food like it. Even the poppadoms sauces were the best. The staff were friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable. The menu was very detailed & unique, with their own signature dishes. Would really recommend.

Went in quite late (10:30 ish) and asked if takeaway was still available. Was told it was, so ordered lamb saag, lamb madras, and sundries. Had a drink while waiting. Got food and went home. My wife's lamb saag tasted lovely, my madras however was awful. It was almost like they couldn't be bothered and got a jar of Pataks or Sharwoods out of the cupboard. By far the worst madras I have ever had from any restaurant or takeaway. Will never go again, or recommend.

We visited on a Sunday evening, there were only two other tables in use but the staff seemed very keen to get us in and out as quickly as possible. We felt pressured to order and didn’t really feel welcome. The food was ok although one of dishes was incorrect and had to be replaced. Probably my first and last visit.

We've visited here twice in the last month and both times the food was excellent - great portions, flavours and dishes we've not seen before to try.There is one waiter who is so rude though it ruined the evening on both occasions. We were asked what we were drinking before even taking our coats off and being given a menu. Wrong dishes arrived and we did not receive the final course of our Wednesday meal special.We felt rushed the whole time even though there were plenty of other tables dining - plates being taken away before they were finished and being asked 3 times in less than 15 mins if we wanted anything else.Staff were not wearing any PPE, only sanitiser was available. We won't be back to dine in but would order for takeaway in future.

We were visiting Bristol while dropping our son at Uni and wanted somewhere to take him to eat. Not knowing any of the local restaurants we booked a table here as it seemed to get good reviews. It was an excellent choice. Good menu with some slightly different dishes. Service was quick and efficient and the food was delicious. Looking forward to our trip back to visit the son so we can book again!

Staying in a hotel about 10 minutes away, I decided on a takeaway rather than eat at the neighbouring restaurant, and after a little research on trip advisor, this seemed the best choice for an Indian takeaway. I had half a kingfisher whilst waiting, and have to say that it is a very nice restaurant. Clean, characteristic and professionally run, and there seemed quite a brisk trade as you’d expect from somewhere with a strong reputation. As takeaways go, I though it was very good. The chicken tikka madras was very well spiced, and a perfect chiili heat level but a lovely rich sauce and the tikka gave added depth. Bombay aloo was very tasty, although perhaps a little greasy, but not a complaint as some curry houses are swimming in oil. Onion bhajis tasted great, and even the pilau rice was noticeably very good. Next time I’m working in the area, I hope to revisit The Royal Raj, but eat in. Very good takeaway. Recommended.

Ace Chicken Dhansak which ticked all the boxes - yummy lentils, and sauce just the right balance of hot and sweet. We will be ordering more takeaways which certainly lift spirits in the lockdown!

I am a regular visitor to the Raj and it is, in my opinion the best curry house in South Glos! The food is always so so good and always piping hot when served! I just want to add that the last few times I’ve been I have gone on the Wednesday night mid week deal. It is such good value and I really like that they let you swap a pudding for an additional side. My table was a party of four so this enabled us to try a bit of everything. However, this week, we arrived and everything felt so rushed. I was 5 mins late to join my friends and the waiting staff had already bought out the popadoms. We weren’t at the table for an hour and a half before told we had to leave as the other table was waiting. I appreciate that Wednesdays are likely to be busy but I feel that the way we were asked to leave was really rude. Almost take your money now P off. A bit of a shame but like previous mentioned cannot fault the food brilliant as always.

Great tasting takeaway, spicy level was just perfect, medium hot but not too hot. Reception and payment was a bit not so friendly at the till, however the staff for our drinks while waiting were nice. Looked like some miserable owner boss that could be at all bothered. Only one dressed not like all the other staff. The only thin i found strange was some of the vegetables especially the onions in the dish like onions had been quartered in the kitchen not chopped or sliced which spoilt the dish a bit, overall though recommended on taste.

Really impressive range of dishes on the menu - many that I've never seen anywhere else - and always something new to try. Good range of drinks too - and they serve cider on tap which is relatively rare for an 'Indian' Restaurant (Bangladeshi, strictly speaking, in this case, I believe).I like the relaxed atmosphere - not too stuffy, not too quiet, a good balance. Service is always brilliant - waiters are welcoming, friendly and helpful, and recognise regulars like ourselves.Definitely recommend - I've taken various people to this restaurant (colleagues, friends, extended family, ...) and never been let down - and, despite having 3 Indian restaurants in walking distance from where we live (Westbury-on-Trym), we drive about 20 minutes each way to go to the Royal Raj instead.

Visited here for the first time to celebrate my birthday. We came on a Wednesday which was very busy I think due to their being a special menu on a Wednesday. Was not able to park in the car park but easily got a space across the road by the shops. Despite being clearly busy I thought the staff were excellent. The Wednesday menu was very good value and portion sizes were more than generous. Would definitely recommend.

The service from as soon as we entered was incredible and made to feel welcome. All food was to a very high standard and was served very quickly despite the business of the restaurant. We have visited multiple times and every meal has been great and to a very high standard. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Despite being the closest curry house to my home I have always avoided it as it had the look of a run down pub.

Ordered at peak time on a Saturday evening and it came really quickly. All of the different curries were fresh and cooked terrifically. Highly recommended.

We’ve just had a really great takeaway, first time @RoyalRaj, definitely recommend. Dishes are well spiced. The salad with the sheek kebab was tasty and varied, compared to the tasteless iceberg normally.

It's been a while since we've been to the Raj so a return visit was in order. Went on a Saturday evening at 6,fully advise booking as the restaurant did get very busy later on. Front of house staff very friendly and the restaurant was very clean and tidy. Drinks and popadoms quickly ordered and served. We chose lamb shank,lamb peshwani,chicken madras,pasanda ands tikka massalla and a kashmiri lamb all with rice and nans. The food is absolutely fantastic and goes well with a pint off Cobra! Be warned the portions are very large and to be honest you could share the rice and nan. Plenty of parking round the back,off Beacon Lane,and enjoy a proper job Indian meal! Budget around £25 a head.

After reading the glowing reviews for this restaurant I ordered for collection and found the customer service very poor, after placing my order by phone I was told half an hour then the phone was put down on me without a thank you or goodbye which I found very rude. I collected my order and again felt that I was dismissed as soon as I had paid and was not even offered my receipt. I found the food to be very bland with no flavour whatsoever. Needless to say I will not be from here again.

Hands down the best place to eat in Bristol - everyone I speak to I tell them about the Raj. It’s our go to for every occasion without fail, birthdays, Monday’s, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, weekends, anniversary’s, break ups - you name it we’re at the Raj. Visited here for husbands birthday. Seen this place many times and looked forward to going. The surroundings were lovely and the food was good. But was totally spoiled by putting us as a couple in the middle of the room. surrounded by a table of about 14 to one side obviously very noisy. A family party table of about 8 also noisy and famiky tabkes to the back. The other side was a table of 6 set up. So sat in the centre of a very noisy room. We were also very rushed by the waiter who was even trying to take our poppadoms and pickles away before we had finished them. I had to ask him to leave some of it as I hadnt. finished. Not sure what was going on the waiter was an older gentleman and there seemed to be something going on with other younger waiters and him. So all in all not a very nice experience although food was good. Wont be going back again. Didnt get chance to photograph any of the main meal as we were to busy being rushed out.

I am not a lover of English curry. Food overpowered by spice or cream.

This lovely Indian restaurant has become our firm favourite. Food is great, and the service is second to none.

Party of four ate here midweek. We were served promptly and politely by attentive staff. The choice on the menu is second to none, probably the most varied and extensive I have experienced in the Bristol area. The food is freshly cooked and portion sizes are generous. The Chicken shaslik was enough to feed two people. Wednesday is offer night so check that out on the excellent website. Really enjoyable evening and thank you to all the staff. Definitely worth a visit if you like quality Indian cuisine.

My husband and I visited the Royal Raj in Winterbourne and wow, what an amazing place it is! We were greeted very warmly by the front of house and shown to a lovely tans. Great atmosphere, really lovely staff and and amazing food. The staff are very attentive and friendly. A brilliant evening - great food, lovely service - we would highly recommend and will be back for sure as this is simply the best Indian restaurant in Bristol!

We hadn't been here for a while now but decided to pop in on the spur of the moment. It had been redecorated since I had visited last. Very nice. The food was great and the service fantastic.

Visited Royal Raj with friends. Had bhajis to start and they were superb. 3 large sized bhajis were fresh & crispy all the way through. Had the Rezalla for main, found the chicken a bit dry and the sauce a bit tasteless and bland. Shame after a great start. Decent selection of lagers and cider on draught

The food and service are first class. Visit as regular as possible and love the Wednesday offer. Friendly atmosphere well recommend a visit

My friend and I were staying in the area for the weekend and decided to visit this restaurant as I had seen it had great reviews on here. We were not disappointed.

Thanks for fitting us in at a short notice. On our way home from Twickenham and craved a curry was told this place was good so decided to give it a go well glad we did because it was great service and most of all the food was fantastic. Thanks again for the late booking will definitely return soon

This is a lovely restaurant. We went there with family (there were 7 of us) and we were given a lovely little room all to ourselves. It was lovely as it gave us a good chance to catch up. The staff were lovely, popping in to see that everything was fine - which it was. The food was lovely, my husband and I had the passanda, him chicken and me lamb. I have to say that the lamb was lovely and tender. Two of out party had chicken bhuna which looked and smelt amazing - something to try next time I think. I lovely place which we will certainly be going back to.

My step-daughter arranged for me, her mum, dad and other family members to go to the Royal Raj as a goodbye dinner (she is off to Dubai to work as cabin crew for emirates). My wife had visited the Raj on several previous occasions and raved about both the venue and the food. This was my first visit.

Took my parents out for a meal at their local, we hadn’t eaten here since it changed hands some time ago ( being very regular customers before this)

Been meaning to pop in the Raj for some time and when the wife suggested we went out I knew exactly where to go. Booked a table the previous evening which for a Friday was needed as the restaurant was very busy from about 7.30. Plenty of parking to the rear of the restaurant. All the front of house staff welcomed us as we went in and we were shown to our table. Drinks order was quickly taken long with the suggestion of poppadoms, and quickly came with a good section of dips. Plenty of time to make your choice of mains,with olive gosht, chicken bhuna,chicken dupiaza and lamb shank jhool chosen. Unfortunately the shank was off but the offer of lamb chops in replace was taken up. No huge wait for the mains to come and boy was it worth it. Now be warned you get quite large portions not only of the meat dishes but of rice as well and the poppadoms are huge. All the dishes we had were fantastic and due to the amount we had we all failed to clear our plates. Budget for about £25 a head for mains and drinks and have a cracking good night.

The Royal Raj in Winterbourne is undoubtedly the best in the whole of Bristol! The service is exceptional, the food is delightful and just the whole experience is sensational. I could not reccomend this place enough!!

Visited here with a large group of family and friends and the food was amazing and service was very good they have a great selection of food and unique dishes that nowhere else in Bristol does. Even the standard curries are with a unique flavour and twist if you love Indian food you must try the royal raj!!!

The Royal Raj specialises in excellent quality food at affordable prices. From starters through to main courses, meals are amazing !! . Wonderful interior and great seating arrangements and can cater for large parties too. Staff are very friendly and always on hand and helpful to get whatever you need throughout your eating experience, they also offer a fantastic take away service if required. I was recently down in Bristol visiting friends and we stumbled across this little gem The Royal Raj.

We are regular users of the Raj , so when Asad said they were doing a banquet feast on a Wednesday night , 5 courses for £13.95 we had to try .

the food was absolutely delicious! it didnt take too long really, and it was so so lovely. the popadums had lots of dips and they were so tasty - there were some i hadnt had before! for the main i had a good old chicken tikka masala, and the sauce was so thick and delicious and there was loads of chicken. the mushroom rice was absolutely delicious and so was the vegetable one. the only thing i would say is that i didnt think the service was that good... we didnt really feel welcomed - the waiter didnt smile at us or say thank you when we left - it wasnt too busy so it wasnt like they were rushed off their feet, i just felt they could have been a lot nicer. the food was lush though so we didnt care too much
