We enjoyed a very leisurely lunch with friends at the Royal Oak. Friendly and helpful staff. Limited menu due to covid but there are still plenty of choices. All meals were top quality and very tasty. Relaxed and safe outside dining. Highly recommended

I went to the Royal Oak busy place, never been before we were looking foreword to it. I had a parmo, poor and flat about 2mm cheese on top it looked like Someone had sat on it. I paid for a large portion this was just a normal size one from anywhere else. The salad was poor, and the chips like I’ve never seen before, white scrappy soft/hard. A few years ago I knew a chef who worked in this pub, he was really good and his specialty was cheese cake. I had not seen him for a few years and hoped he still worked there, so I ordered the chef special cheesecake I was getting exited, until I got my cheesecake, it was so poor and flat I would say about 8mm from bottom to top. I knew then he did not work here. My granddaughter could have done a better cheesecake obviously the chef must be on furlough. Never again it was so flat flat flat and the price was extortionist so glad for the government 10.00 off each person

First day of the Government's scheme for up to half price meals. We made a big saving on full price, as did many others - the place was nearly full at 6pm. The food was good, but service very poor. We'd been there an hour when we got our food, and were on our second drink. We asked for a dessert menu, but no one came to take our order so rather than prolong the frustration, we went to the till and paid - no one brought the bill to our table when we asked for it. It's not as if they were short staffed - there were a lot of waiting staff, but they weren't being managed.

Excellent food and friendly service.A place we used to visit regularly about 10 years ago , and then forgot about as our boys preferred different option.Went as a family tonight with 17 and 12 year old and was a great dining experience especially since our first meal out since Covid and was just what we needed.Plenty of good quality food , couldn't eat it all but lovely atmosphere as well. Well done to all staff for making it feel like a great dining experience for us all.

Came in to the pub after booking for 4 and a baby.We were seated fairly quickly as we were early for our dinner, our baby was a little tired so was very restless which made the experience bad for us. The place was fairly busy but not packed out the service was slow, took around 20 mins before we had to ask someone for drinks then we decided we better just order food too. The drinks took ages to come but the food arrived quickly which was good, the food was ok nothing special the meat was lovely everything else lacked flavour and the gravy was way too watery. There was an old couple who kept making snide remarks about my son who was clearly distressed and had been taken out of the pub by 3 of us to pacify him. We overheard her rude comments complaining about him crying (babies dont cry in her house obviously) and the whole situation left a bitter taste in our mouths, we probably won't return.

After a lovely walk around the area to then have Sunday lunch in this hidden gem! Absolutely the best Sunday lunch I have ever had! Went for a Sunday lunch visit after noy going for many years. The place has changed considerably in that time and I do not think to the better. The pub has 2 entrances and diners are requested to use the right hand entrance which leads in to a bar area where you go to request a table for lunch. I was asked to follow a waiter and after walking all the way through the rear of the pub and past the dining room we ended back at a table next door to the bar area at the opposite side of the pub and about 14 feet from the other front door entrance!! All the tables on offer seem to be very close together and everywhere to the rear of the pub lacks any lightness due to there being no windows to brighten the surroundings. Regrettably I found the food to be only average and was really not excited with the experience

We had a meal here tonight to celebrate the 70th birthday of my mother. We were a party of 12 including 2 kids under 8. The service was excellent with staff taking time to engage with all members of the party especially the kids. Food was served to all members of the group without anybody having to wait whilst others were eating. As a group we all passed comment on how good the food was & how enjoyable the evening had been. On a personal level I thought the food was outstanding & I can’t recall ever eating a better rib eye steak. I wouldn’t hesitate to return in the future.

Visited the Royal Oak while staying in a lodge at Angrove Country Park early January & after reading the reviews on TA. We'd walked through the village earlier in the day & popped in to book a table as we were advised that it's a popular night. We could not fault any part of our evening - especially the very amicable service provided by Mike through to the quality of the drinks and meal itself. We both had rump steak, served with chunky chips mushroom & tomato - we swapped the salad for vegetables. The steaks were cooked perfectly and went down very well with the house red (normally priced £16.95). All of this for just £25 for the two meals & bottle of wine!!! Don't know how they do it?Will definitely return on our next visit to the area 10/10

the meal was okay, value for money. however the slow service let the experience down. It was almost like we did not exist with staff passing us constantly. The ultimate was 30 mins + waiting for desert and coffee. My wife had to ask a passing waitress where our desert and coffee was. She checked and found the male waiter/manager who took our order had put it on the bill but (somehow) it had not been served! she said we could have the coffee free when we finally got it. the male waiter/manager sheepishly came over and apologised saying a computer glitch had caused the delay and the coffee would be taken off the bill (whoopee). this still does not explain why staff passed us several times over the half hour and did not ask if everything was okay, this is normal practise in any restaurant. and no, it was not busy. we had our new years evening meal here, that was busy.

Called tea time on a sunday for late lunch with visiting family. The sunday lunch was average, and we thought expensive. We asked if it was possible to have more carrots as certain members of party didn't eat the other veg. This was no problem to them and supplied free of charge, thank you. Service was very slow ( there was only 3 tables in) hence the little one started to get a bit agitated. Sweets took an age to arrive, I'm sorry to say the millionaire sundae was in the most uneatable, ice cream was ok but the shortbread was harder than concrete dont know what they had done with it. Our experience was dreadful, I don't know where to start firstly I wouldn't of fed my dogs the meals we where served and as for the staff! One of the girls behind the bar insulted my wife Belinda when she asked where the toilets where she directed her to the gents only for my wife to find a large group of men in there sniffing drugs shouting obscenities. When I confronted the men about it I was ridiculed and told to F off to which the bar staff seemed oblivious to. Having lived in the village for fifteen years we often pop out for tea and although not cheap, more due to the price of the drinks, food is decent. One thing that does bug me though is after fifteen years I've never had a decent parmo in the Oak. Being from Teesside and working away from home its one thing I crave and the Oak is last resort. Please, please sort this out. Real chicken breast, not chicken 'mush'. As a business on Teesside you need to get this right!

I can’t count how many mothers days, anniversary’s, valentines and all other none celebratory occasions we have eaten and stayed over the years at this pub/ restaurant. Unfortunately I won’t be returning. We have returned over and over because of the friendly atmosphere and welcome we received. The old father and son owners would make you feel welcome. When I booked, I specifically asked for a table in the restaurant, my mum is 86 and doesn’t really like the bar area. When we arrived the owner, I assume, told me in the most unfriendly way, that he had to move people around. He had a contact number, I assume in case we didn’t turn up. He should have rung me and informed me that we were not in the restaurant. I would have definitely cancelled. Instead of informing us when we arrived and sticking us on the grottiest table in the place. My mums mother’s day is important to me and was spoilt. I couldn’t say how I really felt, as my mum doesn’t like a fuss. The meal was mediocre at best. The tiniest bit of pate for £5.50, with the tiniest bread roll. My son couldn’t see a starter he liked ( the menu is very limited) so just had a tiny bread roll and we were charged £1:50 for it. The old owners always took time to chat and welcome you and the always made my mum feel special. Unfriendly, and mediocre. Sorry mum.

It’s a large but cosy pub which obviously is experienced and popular with food. The meal deal was children eat for £1 with a paying adult and it’s probably the best kids meal around because it’s like mini adult meals in quality and a decent size including dessert. Other deals available. The adult meals are delicious and we can recommend the beef dinner and also their Parmo which are huge. The desserts are lovely too. Overall I would recommend and will return.

After some debates of where to eat i decided on this quiet pub in ayton, I had passed many times before and never thought of going in however i did sample there Sunday lunch and I was pleasantly surprised. The beef was lovely, the melt in your mouth kind however I did enter the pub entrance took a table and ordered and I was not advised that they have a separate eating lounge. So myself and my partner both are within the pub it’s self. Lovely place and I would recommend it !

We visited on Wednesday with a group of friends. We were welcomed warmly and escorted to our table. The waitress was helpful friendly and professional. We asked what the pie of the day and she apologised as she had just come on duty so would have to find out from the kitchen. She came back advising us that it was pork and cider and that it was like a casserole with a pastry topping. We ordered these and were glad that we did as they were delicious. The hand made chips were very moreish so we had to be careful as there was enough to feed an army.

Been here before and decided to return as Great Ayton is a lovely village for a walk around, not to far from where we live and the wife didn't want to cook. Came with our two teenage boys who had the medium Parmo. Myself and my wife had the trio of meats although as we didn't want Chicken (third meat on that day) he offered us a "duo" with extra Beef, Pork to make up for no Chicken. Beef was to die for and both Beef & Pork came in thick slices manually carved of a joint and not the thin anaemic slices you get in some places. Staff were all very friendly and there was enough of them that service was very efficient. We had a lovely meal and we are very pleased we returned. This is a traditional old english pub, still frequented by locals in the bar that serves wholesome, unpretentious simple food at a reasonable price and just what we like. Happy to return again in a little while.

The name suggests character, the history suggests character, Captain Cook hailed from there but more importantly, I went to school there - albeit a long time ago! But occasionally I might slip out of A dorm for a late night pint - in mufti - and what a pub it was - full of real beams and real character - and I had my very first glass of Chablis there - with my folks in a proper dining room, at lunchtime on the day I left - and very good it was too - especially the Chablis - and it has remained my favourite white ever since (esp. the Fourchaume brands)

We were visiting friends (for many years) who are from Great Ayton. Traveled with another couple and had the extreme pleasure of staying and eating at The Royal Oak for a week. The experience could not have been more pleasurable. Everyone from the owners, bar tenders, wait staff, room attendants....everyone was so very helpful. The rooms were very modern and nice. Breakfast was wonderful. Seems everything we asked for was done to perfection. Being from the States, it was so very nice to have the English breakfast....so very good. Every meal we had there was wonderful....especially the fish and chips dinner as well as the giant Yorkshire pudding filled with delicious roast beef and gravy. Kudos to the owners and the entire staff. We certainly hope to be back to The Royal Oak!

Very comfortable place to be and go for a meal, I've been several times before and the portion sizes have all been great and the food itself is really good, even better if you wish you can order a takeout and have it at home! One of the few places that does this and it tastes like a proper home cooked dinner. 5/5

The mark of great customer service is how people react when things go wrong. We were meant to be collected from Gribdale Gate at 3:30pm but due to a mix up we’re not collected until 4pm so had got pretty cold. When we arrived the staff prioritised getting us into our warm room over filling in all the check in details and a glass of white wine each went a long way to restoring our spirits.

Really nice, cosy pub which served amazing homemade food, chips were so amazing! And reasonably priced. The only bad thing was that the food took over an hour to come however, we were made aware of this before ordering by the staff and there was also a sign to say the same. The kids didn’t mind the wait as there is a handy outdoor play area for them. Would really recommend this place.
