The Golden Lion in Hambleton

Excellent all round --- good food with helpful and friendly staff and they're dog friendly, a word of caution though as some of the ales on draught are really really really good and it's too easy to have more than enough .We had the wild mushroom risotto and a chicken kiev which were rather nice and unfortunately didn't leave room for the dessert menu --- maybe next time , and be assured there will be a next time.

Stayed here overnight while the Cleveland Way. The barman/host was a marmite character, you loved him or hated him. We thought he was great with a dry sense of humour. He was friendly, helpful, the room was comfortable with the full Yorkshire breakfast being lovely. We didn't eat here which we wish we had, as when we returned, the place was heaving with diners so that says something about the food. Would stay here again.

As always amazing food. Had the lamb and steak , just gorgeous. Crème brûlée was delicious. This place has such a unique feel that you have to experience. We just can’t stop coming back. Rooms lovely & breakfast is always so nice , first class produce.

Nice location, friendly staff, good beer, cozy atmosphere. But above all superb food - we especially recommend the haloumi fritter starter, the deep fried calamari starter (wonderfully light squid in delicious tasting batter), the gorgonzola risotto and the sticky toffee pudding!

Limited uninspiring menu, only one fish dish, salmon? I had the vegetable wellington the pastry was soggy and the filling a large tasteless mixture of goodness knows what. Other dishes included rack of lamb with mashed potato this was cold and a bland pie. This used to be a fabulous rustic pub with good food. The tables and chairs were ugly modern things which didn’t suit the old building. We won’t return.

Awful customer service. I tried calling to book a table and spoke with a rude man who was incredibly unhelpful and unpleasant.

We stayed for 4 nights and everything was ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS in every way. The team were everything you would want running your own business . The food was delicious and obviously prepared fresh, both breakfast and evening meals. Our room was spotlessly clean with the best shower ever. Fabulous value for money and not to missed if you want a traditional country pub with all of the above. Definitely the best pub in the area with an owner that can only be described as a character and a gentleman. We will certainly be returning. THANK YOU ALL.

Excellent food in a beautiful old inn, on the main street of a lovely (but very busy) village. We were a bit perturbed to be greeted with a big sign saying that 'Clean, Quiet, Well Behaved dogs are welcome." Seriously? This is a Country pub, right in the middle of prime hiking and walking country - one would expect 'Muddy boots and dogs welcome!" That aside, the food really is very good. Roast Beef, Roast Pork, both served with copious and imaginative vegetables, and most of all the Fishcake with a superb sauce, were all first rate, and the one pudding we could manage, Plum and Apple Crumble, was also the very best. Fortunately we had come with our dogs well prepared, having made sure they got a dip in the local beck, and we plied them with plenty of food to keep them quiet. They take their food seriously here, and it's very much a local place so don't expect the kind of warmth you might get at other Yorkshire pubs, but the excellence of the food compensates for everything else.

This pub will always be our favourite!! And most definitely the BEST in the village and surrounding areas! We come to this pub all the time and it has never let us down! It has such a warm and cosy atmosphere which makes it a perfect pub. The staff are so so friendly, super attentive and always smiling! We have been for evening meals and Sunday lunch! The food is absolutely delicious!!! The Sunday lunch: massive Yorkshire puds, perfect gravy, great choices of veg, tasty roasties, creamy cauliflower cheese, the meat is cooked to perfection. The desserts are ur classic English desserts which I absolutely love!!! I can never resist a dessert at the golden lion 🍰

This venue came highly recommended and there are many reasons we can see why. The menu and specials offer a good range of imaginative dishes. Freshness and taste are obviously high priorities. We chose the mussels and pork cheeks followed by pan fried Dover sole and Salmon fishcake, with creme brulee and chocolate and pistachio tart to follow, and completed the meal with perfectly prepared americanos. This is a cosy atmospheric and well patronised village pub so you might be surprised to find such culinary strength on the menu. The main criticism for us throughout was a strong feeling that chef was too heavy handed with the salt for our tastes - something we have encountered too often in fine dining. For us, it really gets in the way of the pure flavours of the ingredients. We always want those to shine through not least to appreciate their subtlety. Tables are quite close together so it is a shame when you are unfortunate to be right next to a table where the diners are having such a good time the volume of talk and laughter feels intrusive. Bad luck on our part on this our first visit especially as it was at the start of service, but it was a Friday evening. Chef is clearly working at a high level of creativity especially on the starters and mains and the front of house team are attentive and friendly.

We have eaten at the Golden Lion previously although not for some years. We were pleased to see that the menu choices are still good and the food excellent. The restaurant/ pub was very busy, service was good, although a little longer pause between courses would have been preferred. This was something that we could have asked for. On this occasion we had booked a room for the night. This was well decorated & presented. Warm, cosy and with a great en-suite shower. Breakfast the following morning was included and was very nice with lots of options. The bill was very reasonable and staying in this great location is certainly something we will consider again.

The whole place felt romantic but within an old fashioned pub style. We both ate gnocchi with Gorgonzola and nduja sauce… one of the nicest things I’ve ever tasted! I followed it with sea bass and brown shrimp in a coconut broth on rice which was absolutely yummy. Hubby had creamy chicken, ham and leek pie mash and braised red cabbage.He thoroughly enjoyed it . We had no room for dessert! Service was friendly and efficient.

Absolutely outstanding steak and ale pie. And the gravy… wow something just a little special and worthy of the visit all by itself.

We stumbled into the Golden Lion but went back twice. Our first night two of of party of 8 were not well but we organised a takeaway inc soup that was just no trouble at all. Our meal was marvellous on all levels. Tasty. Generous. And lovely service friendly and attentive. Our second evening was even better with our sick colleagues restored. Best pub in the village! Fantastic pub, and we tried them all, the only one that we felt that we were truly welcome. The food was amazing, really amazing. The drinks were fantastic, but the staff were really where they rise above the others. We met Linsey, Nick, Nina and Freya and they are all so very lovely and made our dog Vinne welcome too. We felt so welcomed. If only all of the pubs were like this one. The ambience is amazing. We stayed in the village but next time we come (and we will, purely based on the fantastic reception) we will stay in this pub. Popped in after a stroll around the reservoir and Osmotherley. Started with calamari and mussels, which did not disappoint. Followed by the biggest, juiciest chicken kiev; while the wife had pan-fried chicken and Rosti. Finished with the biggest slab of tiramisu and a moist brownie with the best chocolate sauce. Was just expecting standard pub food but was impressed with both the food and the service. The staff were very pleasant and welcoming. Will definitely be back the next time we are in the area.

This is a great pub to stay in on the C2C with a great dinner too! It has a wonderful spot in the middle of the village. It is a great trad pub with a hard working landlord! It is really easy to stay in Osmotherley and rejoin the C2C the following day. Definitely worth an overnight stay and G&T there! Great breakfast too!

We stayed in Osmotherly for a week and and ate here three times. The food was to a very high standard although a reduced menu due to covid, there was still a good choice on offer. Staff were friendly and polite, social distancing was implemented with each table being seperated by use of a perspex screen, track and trace was also in place. Highly recommended

We stayed 1 night whilst walking the coast to coast. The Owner/Manager is relaxed but with a high customer service standard which we really appreciated. Covid related protection is in place with perspex screens between tables. The bedroom was very comfortable (we agree with other comments that tea making facilities in room would be welcome). We cycled the Tim Woodcock route of the Wainwright Coast to Coast with baggage transfer and accommodation coordinated via Packhorse. The Golden Lion in Osmotherley was our stop on day 3, it was extremely comfortable and able to deal with muddy bikers providing secure storage and good food in their restaurant. Furthermore, the CV19 measures in place provided us with absolute confidence.The trip provided some amazing biking and a fantastic adventure through three very distinct and stunning National Parks.Thank you,Alex and Dominic

To be fair, complimentary tea was provided on arrival in the restaurant. The wifi is poor.However, the food in the restaurant was very good as was the breakfast in the morning.
