Beautifully presented, food you would want at a pub. Fantastic garden and lovely beer and ale. Great way to spend the fist sunny Spring day of 2025.

A truly fabulous pub, in a beautiful location, off the beaten track. I have to say that the meals felt like Michelin star cuisine at a price that is affordable, especially those delicious starters, there is a lot of talent and creativity in that kitchen - credit goes to James and Ian. A big shout out to the lovely owner Alix as well as Louis and Ollie. Thank you so much for taking care of our tummies and our tastebuds, we had such a wonderful time and can't wait to come back for our next visit.

We had a lovely Sunday Roast after a great walk in the spring sunshine on Sunday. Really welcoming friendly attentive staff. Great atmosphere , all topped off with the local Rebellion real ale . We will definitely return , this is a fantastic country pub , run very well 👍

Visited for Sunday lunch. Very disappointed and surprised that Cask Ale is not served at all, which is unusual these days. Sunday lunch slightly above average - not the best but not the worst by any means. We all had roast lamb - vegetables not cooked and inedibly hard but otherwise everything was fine. Nice pub with good service.

Food was delicious, the service was amazing they staff were very attentive and ensured that our experience was one to remember, we will be back to explore the menu more as it was so hard to choose what to have as it was so varied. We all ordered the Roast with all the trimmings.

On a friend’s recommendation, we decided to try the Royal Oak, taking a chance without a booking. Great to see a rural pub so busy on a Wednesday lunchtime. The staff were great and we took their advice and ordered the bubble and squeak and it was nothing short of exceptional. Safe to say, we’ll be back very soon!

Lovely interiors but spoiled a bit by the rude host who was upset that we used the car park even though we’d booked a table. A shame as rest of staff were friendly. Food was nice but the roast was cold - bit of a shame

Really loved everything food, service which was great! My only negative comment was the temperature . It was freezing, and when checking several of the radiators they were off. I was literally shivering. It is a shame the entire experience was ruined by the temperature. The service and food were great, but if that isn’t resolved I wouldn’t go back.

Brunch 25.01.25. 1:30 pm As regular visitor We always have the signature dish 'bubble & Squeak. With the new chef all of two weeks the dish was disappointing. The bubble and squeak cake burnt both ends. The supposed grilled bacon was tiny cut lardens. I asked for extra bacon which when presented was burnt cinders . Basically not editable. Such a shame as I have in the past recommended the signature dish. The co owner Alix is aware so I'm am not speaking out of turn. I will not return for a couple months in the hope the signature dish is back to the quality presentation and taste expected as well as addressing the chefs cooking deliverables

Best Sunday lunch we have had in a long time. The food is beautifully presented, tastes delicious and UNLIMITED gravy! Staff are excellent and the atmosphere is excellent. Great pub, thoroughly recommend.

We held my husband’s 50th birthday party in the Royal Oak’s Teepee on a freezing January night and it was a great success. The roaring fires as our guests approached the Teepee created a very welcoming and special atmosphere and the fire inside kept everyone warm. Everyone has dressed warmly (it was around -2!) but coats weren’t needed inside the Teepee. Nola was great at keeping everyone’s drinks topped up and generally making sure everything ran smoothly. The food was also very good. We had a really fun evening and all our guests loved it. Would highly recommend the Teepee area at the Royal Oak for a party - a special venue.

Such a welcoming warm cozy pub on a brutally cold day! The staff were attentive , efficient and friendly. We ate the Royal Burger and the Lamb Schwarma, both were delicious and very generous portions. It was Saturday lunchtime and quite busy which gave a great atmosphere. There’s plenty of space and the tables aren’t too close so you can have chat without been overheard, something that a lot of the other local eateries struggle with. Highly recommend.

Disastrous christmas day drinks at the royal oak. Charged service despite the fact that we had to collect our own drinks from the bar, they weren't brought to us. There were two people serving behind the bar and staff then closed the bar (at around midday) because they couldn't keep up. Severe lack of foresight considering it was christmas day. Worst thing was that no effort was made to apologise or acknowledge the terrible service. Poor management, won't be visiting this pub again. Massive shame as we have been going for years.

It was so lovely to be able to revive the tradition of going up to the Royal Oak on Christmas day. Service from Alex and the team was excellent, despite it being as festively busy as it was, the 'Christmasy' atmosphere was wonderful. A super few hours!

Came to the Royal Oak for Christmas drinks and had a lovely time. Well organised and sincere service despite the Christmas chaos. Owners were friendly and checked on us a few times throughout the day. Would recommend for a chat and a couple of drinks.

The pub was very busy so service was very very slow. The staff were lovely but just very busy. Food was ok. The drinks were great.

We visited The Royal Oak on the 23rd November, after a long walk in windy and wet conditions so we were very much looking forward to arriving for lunch. As we were a fairly large group, the service was brilliant, the waitress was checking if everybody had arrived, then set up different tabs to avoid confusion at the end for splitting the bill and food was delicious. I would definitely go back whenever I am in the area again.

An impromptu visit to our local did not disappoint! Delicious food, friendly service and a table by the fire - perfect! Recommend the lamb shawarma and the puddings ;)

WOW, WOW, - we came for a meal and it was made a great experience. The staff went beyond exceptional. Lucy went above and beyond to ensure we had the best time… Lucy is just an inspiration to the hospitality industry, she was personable, helpful and above all just brilliant!! Lunch with a group of friends after a walk round the woods and Marlow Common. A busy lunchtime but good service, and the food was worth the slight wait. Steak pie with mash, lamb shawarma, fish cakes and the creme brulee especially enjoyed.

We turned up without booking on Saturday - early evening, 4 adults, 5 teens and a dog ! We were warmly greeted and spent the next 2 hours very well looked after. Food was yummy and arrived in good time. Hope to be be back soon!

We visited the Royal Oak on Sunday for a late roast , we all absolutely loved it ! I had the veg roast which was so tasty , as was the roast beef and the pork ! The portions were pretty big but we had to have the cauliflower cheese as an extra and it was delicious! We left room for puddings! Choc chip bread & butter pudding was a firm favourite! We had an excellent waitress called lucy who was amazing! What an asset to this restaurant! Nothing was too much trouble for her she went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time! We will be returning soon !

The Royal Oak is back! After a couple of years of reduced quality and service, our local pub is back in business. We've been a couple of times recently and had excellent food and the service from Lucy was personal, friendly and helpful. I can now recommend the Royal Oak heartily.

Our first visit in a very long while and we were more than a little surprised to find it so quiet on Friday evening. We were served well cooked, honest pub grub which took a while to arrive but was quite obviously freshly prepared. A small criticism would be that there are no "green" veggie sides on the menu ... maybe some tenderstem broccoli, green beans or a mixed salad would be nice and perhaps a nod to one healthy main. Surroundings are pleasant and we were extremely well looked after by Lucy who was knowlegeable, cheery and accommodating of our various requests (veggies as sides taken from existing mains!). I also felt it was reasonable value for money for Marlow.

We visited The Royal Oak on Saturday for a family meal, and it was a brilliant experience from start to finish. The service and food were absolutely spot on. Lucy, in particular, was fantastic with our three children, going out of her way to make them feel welcome. We ordered the burger, lamb shawarma, and a few kids' meals, and everything was delicious—especially the burger! It’s refreshing to dine at a proper family-run pub serving real, hearty pub grub. Highly recommended, not just for the food but also for the lovely local walks in the area. Perfect for a family day out!

An excellent pub to have a great Sunday lunch after a walk in the Chilterns. Good atmosphere and attentive, friendly service.

Complete chaos. Called on a Sunday to find out latest time they served Sunday lunch. Told kitchen open till 6.00pm, so turn up at 4.30 pm. Turned up at 4.20. Got menus tried to order sun. Lunch told kitchen closes at 4.30 so maybe starters. Asked the young gentleman to find out what they could serve, never saw him again. Woman appears 5 mins later to say we could order whatever we wanted. So we ordered 2x pork belly Sunday roasts. What we got was pork shoulder which was tasteless and the whole plate was lukewarm. Complete and utter confusion !!!!!!

Not what it was, sadly. Food was adequate but the houmous starter was sloppy and my toast burned on one side. The veggies served with my fish were almost inedible and the burger was pretty average and although we were there early the steak pie wasn't available. We didn’t think it was good value for money either at nearly £90 with only a glass of wine each! A very disappointing evening and won’t be rushing back.

Nice pub, good menu. Decent food and value. Staff good. Could do better if you have allergies or intolerances. No gf Yorkshire pudding offered for Sunday lunch, which is disappointing. But overall nice atmosphere and food. Photo not a gluten free lunch.

We had a lovely family lunch, the food was excellent. Lucy who looked after us - her service was fantastic and looked after us throughout our leisurely lunch, always friendly and a welcoming smile.

My son and daughter in law had their Wedding reception here. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING venue! The staff went above and beyond and were very personable, attentive and made the day very special. The food was delicious too! Nola in particular was very helpful when we dropped off all the equipment the night before and was very reassuring. She kept on checking in with us throughout the day that everything was ok and if there was anything further we needed. Great surroundings, especially the Tipi which was decorated beautifully and so inviting. Fantastic day was had by all and still 2 days on my family are texting me about how fantastic the food and venue was, even the owner of the venue came in on her day off and checked in with the bride! – THANK YOU to all the staff, especially Nola and Lucy for the most wonderful day and evening. We will be back very soon and will be recommending you to all our family and friends.

My friends had their wedding reception here, it’s a perfect venue! The staff were fantastic, the setting is beautiful, food was faultless! They really did go out of their way to make the most special day!

Had a lovely birthday lunch for my mother. The numbers kept changing, we ended up being 19 people but the pub accommodated our changes without any bother. The food and wine were excellent and Alex and the team looked after us very well. Overall a wonderful experience which made for a very special day for my mother.

Only went for a drink, hence 4 stars. But everyone eating had happy faces and the service looked fantastic. Will certainly go back for food. THIS PART ADDED SINCE. We went back for food, It remains 4 stars for us, the experience for us was not quite what we had expected. The service was good, smiley and efficient staff, although there was a mix up on the cauliflower cheese, we didn't get any, but the lady did come out and explain someone else had had it and it would take 15mins to redo, by which time we would have nearly finished our roast, mistakes happen. The reason for 4 stars, my wife's beef wasn't as tender as we've had before, but my pork belly was up there with some of the best I've had. Will go back

What a disappointing meal. Previous visits had always been excellent but tonight standards had dropped alarmingly My wife had the fish cake but left most of it as it was cold! My fish dish was awful, overcooked and nasty in all respects. Subsequently we hear that they had lost their chef just a few days before . If so why did the owners try to put out food ? Not sure we will return, although we would praise the waiting staff

After not being to the Royal Oak for quite awhile we arranged to meet friends for lunch. So glad we did. Ambience and service were great and the food was so good, I had the chicken pie, delish, hubby had a burger. In fact it was so good me and my husband returned the next day for a Sunday roast! I had the beef and hubby had the lamb. Both good hardly any fatty bits so our poor doggie didn’t get many treats lol and brilliant yorkies. We won’t be leaving it long before we visit again especially as it is so dog friendly so our little guy can come with us.

We held a work social event in the Tepee which was absolutely fantastic.(The rain did not affect the night despite it pouring!) The food was delicious, and the services was fantastic (thank you Nola) We held a silent disco and everyone really enjoyed themselves. We will definitely be back.

Hired out the TeePee for a business event, Nola and her team offered exceptional service from the get go, communication was fantastic, the teepee was a great space , decorated well and worked so well for our event. The food was fabulous and got rave reviews and the service from the staff could not be faulted, they were on hand all evening. Thank you so much to Nola and her team for making such a memorable event for us.

We recently used the Royal Teepee at the Royal Oak for our wedding after-party, and we were very happy with the whole experience. Everything ran smoothly; Alix gave us some good ideas at the booking meeting, Nola then helped us with the arrangements leading up to our event and then she and Will looked after us brilliantly on the night. Our guests were all very complimentary about the attractive surroundings, the clever idea of the teepee as a party venue, and the food. A great suggestion from Alix was for us to bring our own cupcakes for the end of the meal. We found some ‘volunteer’ bakers among our guests, got them to make a batch each and it worked really well. Then as night fell, the fire bowl was lit, together with the many lanterns we had brought, and the place became quite magical. Our friends and family kept telling us that we’d made a very good choice of venue and how much they’d enjoyed the whole occasion. And it didn’t rain!

Had Sunday lunch, was a bit surprised how it was dished up, a mountain with beef on top, then a Yorkshire pudding balanced on top, have had many Sunday roasts, but this was a first, could not distinguish what veg was under the mountain, the parsnips , I think that's what they were, were not cooked, there's a difference between al dente and not cooked, the roast potatoes were very poor and soggy, other veg was limited, also stating oodles of gravy, I think it was missing, for £22. I was expecting a traditional Sunday roast, I would have complained, but was with friends we had not seen for ages

We had a pretty terrible lunch today, July 5th. My £27 "medium rare" sirloin looked tired and grizzly on the plate and proved just that on my attempt to eat it. Half of it was grizzle and had to be left. My chips were fine but my wife's were incinerated! And so too was the batter on her fish. The waiting staff were very pleasant and so we didn't like to comment. And they didn't ask how our food was despite the amount left on our plates. It's no where near good enough. We were there a few weeks ago and my wife who regularly orders the risotto was less than impressed with her spring risotto. My "homemade" pie was poor too. This place used to be good. They need to address their kitchen issues asap. We'll be giving it a wide berth for a good while.

A small, cosy pub with a good selection of food and drinks.

The teepee is a great event space and a good value hire option for the area. However, we unfortunately had a poor experience with the management, which we feel obliged to share. We faced significant communication issues, little to no management of expectations and ultimately a disregard of responsibility. The primary issue was with the food: some dishes were served differently than ordered (veggie options that contained meat), incorrect dishes that we never discussed were served, and some food did not arrive at all. All of that with a high risk of gluten cross-contamination that we previously discussed how to avoid (my partner is coeliac). We had 60 adults and were charged £52 per adult for nibbles and canapés - ultimately the £3k food bill represented bad value. The common denominator was the unprofessionalism of the landlady, Alix. Her attitude was entirely problem-centric rather than solution-based. Her behaviour was generally confrontational, rude, and often intimidating. She should not be anywhere near a hospitality venue given her demeanour and non-existent customer service skills. No doubt Alix will claim that our complaint is due to their inability to cater to allergens at the teepee (we requested gluten-free food for only 4 of 60 guests) and that we were the problem (which was her narrative due to our minor dietary requirement requests). Even though we booked several months in advance, she tried to get us to cancel a few weeks from the date which was unnecessarily stressful. Despite payment terms never being communicated, I had tried to pay the drinks bill on the night but had not been informed they do not accept American Express. I agreed to pay the food bill immediately provided that Alix acknowledged the complaint. Her stance was to ignore the issues and press for payment, though she eventually replied with a disputable version of events and accused us of blackmail when we requested a nominal goodwill gesture as compensation for the errors made with the food (a request she rejected). Full payment was settled within 48 hours of the party. The teepee is a lovely place, just a shame who is in charge. Making your paying guests feel like a burden is really poor behaviour. On a positive note, I’d like to give a shoutout to Jo, the bar manager, who was superb. There was a sense that the area was understaffed, but Jo handled everything tremendously with genuine enthusiasm.

I liked this pub, the downside was that We couldn’t order food as there was a private party, we did notice other visitors did get served food though.

Booked a table for saturday night . Service was slow . Food burnt and very average. Overpriced! Outside eating eating area filthy dirty and hadn’t been cleaned for ages! Tables filthy, stained not wiped and covered in condiments from previous diners! Would not return or recommend!

Lovely afternoon walking in the Chiltern Hills followed by a lovely dinner at The Royal Oak (plus it didn't rain!) I recommend it!

Went along for the first time in a few years and was very impressed. Very friendly welcome and attentive service. Caesar salad was delicious and arrived quickly. Knickerbocker Glory was off the scale of amazing, utterly sublime - worth visiting for that alone.... All in all a lovely evening and will look forward to return back very soon.

My son celebrated his wedding here last Saturday. The food was wonderful and the lady in charge was most helpful. She worked very hard to ensure everything went smoothly.

We have been to the Royal Oak twice for food in the last week and both times it has been fantastic. Lovely venue, delicious food, very happy!! Alex has been very helpful and accommodating. Great for people in wheelchairs as well.

Nola and her husband put on a great spread for our friend's 40th at the Royal Oak, catering and providing drinks for around 60 people. Finger food was delicious and always a drink in hand through to closing time! We would recommend them to host any private celebration without hesitation.

Gorgeous restaurant and amazing food & service!!

Just got back home after another excellent sunday lunch at the pub. Lovely day so sat outside. Chicken and lamb dinners faultless and service excellent. Knickerbocker glory superb and pavlova delicious. I didn't eat it all I was there with my husband. Our dog, Arlo enjoyed her sirloin steak pieces.....10 out of 10 all round. Although it was busy and warm the staff are all very professional and friendly. A perfect sunday afternoon. Thank you and we will be back soon. Well done everyone..Perfect.

Loved it here, can’t believe we only just discovered it after 8 years being just up the road. There’s a lesson there somewhere 🤦🏻‍♂️. The steak burger although very expensive was absolutely delicious and I would order it again. Garden looked lovely although we sat indoors. Super friendly staff, and landlady made us feel very welcome and I would highly recommend.

It was tipping it down and freezing and had just walked 10k with my friends for dofe. The owners not only let us stay, but gave us the tea I have ever tasted all on the house. Best service I have ever experienced. The food also looked amazing especially the burgers. Couldn’t recommend this more.

This was a drop in and thankfully got a table with our dogs! So glad we dropped in as the Sunday roast was lovely and the crumble was fantastic!! Will definitely return

With Nola’s help, I organised the best 50th surprise party in the Teepee, it was such a brilliant night and everyone had a great time. Nola made the whole process completely stress free and was very accommodating to all our requests. The charcuterie boards for the party were stunning and everyone very much enjoyed the food. Thanks so much Nola and your team, I would recommend to anyone who wants to create a stress free celebration in the beautiful Teepee setting.

Had a wonderful lunch here today. Party of 5 of us had drinks and sharing platters and everything was delicious. Our waitress Lucy could not do enough to help us, she was fantastic! We will definitely return.

We had a wonderful lunch today and were very well looked after by the lovely Lucy. The dogs were made welcome and given a treat while we tucked into our meals. My companion had a tasty schnitzel. 'Crispy & favoursome. The fries were perfection.' I had the lamb schwarma - after telling Lucy I was on the keto diet she kindly got the kitchen to whip me up extra salad instead of pitta. The lamb was succulent with lots of lovely crunchy salady bits. A fine sauv blanc to boot. Great atmosphere. Well run and fabulous nostalgic tunes. You couldn't ask for a cosier Saturday lunch! My wife organised a surprise 60th birthday celebration for me at the Royal Oak in the teepee area. It was excellent, the events team were very helpful and were on hand throughout the evening. The teepee was great, and the extra heat from the log burner near the outside bar was very welcome on a slightly chilly April evening. The food provided was equally impressive - a very nice and varied spread. Our guests commented very positively and a good time was had by us all. Thanks Royal Oak!

I booked The Royal Teepee at the Royal Oak for a surprise celebration for my husband’s 60th birthday. The whole experience from booking to the end of the celebration night, 20th April, was outstanding. Nola supported me with decisions and put me at ease when I was panicking. The food served on the night was of amazing standard and beautifully presented. I received great comments from our guests.

We visited as a family of 4 and 2 dogs. The service and food was outstanding. I explained to Lucy, the Manager it was rare to find a pub with a good veggie option, but mine was superb. Highly recommended, thank you.

We came for a drink and the kids were fed their tea for free! Great space for them to run around outside afterwards too. Amazing service, food, drinks, atmosphere...we can't fault the place and pretty sure we will be back every week!

Probably one of the most disappointing roast dinners we’ve ever had…. Roast potatoes inedible, rock hard and hollow at centre from being overcooked. Just flavourless. Such a shame, we e never been here before and went by reviews online.

I got lucky to get a table for 6 online on Sunday morning for lunch the same day. First impressions leave lasting impressions. We were all greeted with big smiles upon entering The Royal Oak and directed to our table straight away. Service was friendly, polite and efficient. Food was on point, we went for the Sunday roasts and pies. Each meal was full of flavour and nothing was over or under cooked. We are quite high maintenance when it comes to food and taste and we were not disappointed at all. I can be quite picky yet had nothing to fault. It was lovely for the owner to introduce herself to us and talk a little about the restaurant. Personal and kind service always goes a long way. We are fans and The Royal Oak is now at the top of my list of gastropubs to go to for amazing service and fantastic food.

We were staying up the road (at the delightful Kite's Cabin) and came here for Sunday lunch. It was naturally very busy when we arrived but the staff were so great that we were shown our table before we'd had time to settle in at the bar! The service was very friendly and professional throughout. I had the vegan Wellington (I eat meat but this called to me and I wasn't disappointed it) topped with a really good Yorkshire. I must admit that I can't recall what I ate for pud, which could be down to age and 4 pints of Kicking Goat (bit too moreish) but I have no doubt it was also top notch.
