Lovely pub serving great beer. Harvey’s beer remains consistently very good. The one down side is there is a gentleman who works here who has poor customer service skills and is rude and off-hand which sours the experience. Aside from this would be a 4 or 5 star pub easily.

This was my first visit to this pub for a party. I was excited before I came but disappointed with the service from one of bartenders who has dark hair. I stood next to the bar to order but he just ignored me. Five minutes later, he came to me. No greetings at all even after I said hello to him. He just replied “what do you want?” without even showing a smile on his face. Fifteen minutes later, the pub got much busier when more people arrived for the party. I needed to go upstairs but I couldn’t find where the stairs were. So I approached the bar and asked the bartender politely “can you show me where the stairs to upstairs, please?” In stead of pointing out the direction or told me where it was, he said “Isn’t that obvious? You won’t miss it.” then he turned his head and walked away. As I mentioned earlier, it was my first time here. I wasn’t familiar with the place at all. I thought it would be easier to ask a bartender rather to look for it myself. Otherwise I would have to excuse myself to go around the busy pub. It turned out that the door leads to toilet and stairs were blocked by customers. That was why I didn’t see the sign on the door. I understood the bartender might have been worked a whole day, he might be tired on a busy Saturday evening. But it shouldn’t be difficult for him to treat customers nicely and politely. If he doesn’t like the job, he shouldn’t work there. Another bartender who has blonde hair was happy and polite to customers though. No one would be happy to spend money but receive rude services in return. I wouldn’t go there again.

Visit London once a year and always visit this pub at least once. Called in the night of Euro semi and felt really unwelcome due to probably a Scottish accent. Barman poor attitude as i asked for a Guinness, told they didn't have any so took an alternative and handy over Scottish £20 which he then had an issue with having taken a drink from the glass i told him to accept it or take the drink back which he grabbed and gave me the note back.

This could be such a great pub but the guy behind the bar shouldn’t be in the hospitality industry. He had no social skills at all and made us feel distinctly unwelcome. Very disappointing. Was really excited about coming here after researching pubs near London Bridge to meet a friend from Zurich I hadn’t seen in years. 45 minutes after ordering we were brought two meals that we hadn’t ordered nor did the calamari starter we had ordered arrive. We were refunded but the staff were unapologetic or interested in finding a way of remediating a situation which was clearly very unsatisfactory. Might be good for a beer but don’t come for food.

This is probably the best pub in central London at the moment. The cask ale (Harvey’s) is properly looked after and served in fine form - the best pint of cask ale I have had in London for many years. Staff are friendly and efficient. Food is available but takes a back seat - this is a drinkers’ pub. Screen-based entertainment and piped music are conspicuously absent. As a result there is a lively and convivial atmosphere during the evening and a good mix of different types of people. If you want to know what a proper pub is like, there is currently no better example in London. Very well done to all involved.

This was a firm favourite of mine pre-. It always felt like stepping back in time - something truly special down a backstreet. Hadn’t made my way way there for a little while, but popped in over the weekend. Unfortunately the pub has been modernised, and not really in a sympathetic way. I know pubs have to adapt to survive. But this didn’t feel like the right treatment for this gem. The beer remains stellar. But what’s happened to the decor/vibe! I wonder if it’s under new management. But unfortunately the old pub chairs/tables seem to have been replaced by clunky, large dining tables. Ugly, lacking in character, and hard to get around. The cosy space at the back, where there used to be arms chairs and assorted brick-a-track, is gone; replaced by sterile leather-clad, bar style stools. The old doors between the bars seem to have been removed. The lighting is harsh. There is now a large ugly TV, and music was playing. Barman seemed sullen and served whilst on the phone. It feels more generic, and less unique. The Royal Oak was special and can be again. Turn back the hands of time and take it back to what it was before!

Nice pub, unbelievably rude barman. My friend, who is extremely polite always, asked for a beer but it was off, he asked if there was something similar, the barman pointed to one which was significantly more alcoholic. my friend had a long evening ahead and wanted to pace himself, he asked if there was anything with a lower abv. “Here’s what you can do,” said the barman, “go to [name of another pub] down the road.” He turned and walked away. They did have beers with a lower abv (the one he suggested was 5.8, as opposed to 3.8 of the one my friend asked for), not that that has any bearing on whether this is justifiable behaviour. Later another friend asked him, “What’s this beer like?” “Good.” “I mean, what kind of beer is it, colour, flavour etc.” “Nice.” Every time any of our group went to the bar, he was taciturn and unpleasant. This was the slightly bearded, short ponytail barman. It was a shame because I was meeting old friends I haven’t seen for years because I was in London for the night and we chose the pub because it had a good reputation (it is a nice pub, but that’s totally irrelevant if the staff go out of their way to make you feel unwelcome), but I will never be going there again, and if anyone ever asks for a pub suggestion in that area I (and I’m sure my London-based friends) will suggest avoiding this place, unless you fancy being treated like dirt.

A good little pub and a nice find given it’s quite some way from the Harvey’s part of the world. They have a great selection of Harvey’s ales all at reasonable prices too. The pub can get quite cramped and busy as it’s quite small and tight. The main thing I’d change is the harsh lighting. Something softer would be nicer. You can’t complain in having something a bit different though that’s not part of the usual central and inner London chains. Solid 4/5.

🚇 Nunhead 🍺 £6.50 Camden Hells The Golden Anchor is located in a residential area in Nunhead, Southeast London. The nearest station is Nunhead mainline. This pub was built in 1867 and looks that it may have been altered at some point in the 1930’s. This pub may look familiar to you, as it featured on Tom Kerridge's “Saving Britains Pubs” series back in 2020. This is a spacious two bar pub that has the main bar located at the front and a similar sized bar located at the rear. The decor here is contemporary with an eclectic mix of colourful and traditional furniture and bold fixtures and fittings. Just by the servery in the front bar is a table of dominoes which is a regular fixture here. At the front of the pub is a cosy outside space with parasols. The beer line up was all keg and included familiar mainstream brands. I decided on a Camden Hells lager, my pint hit the spot, price point was a tad above average. This pub has served food in the past, but I couldn’t see a food menu when I visited. We arrived just after 5pm on a warm Saturday afternoon in July. The pub had not long opened and was fairly quiet with one other local punter in attendance. We got talking to the Landlady and a member of the bar team, both were friendly and welcoming. It would seem this place comes alive in the evenings, it opens most days late afternoon and has a late license at weekends. This pub shows sport on Sky and TNT, has Dominoes practice three nights a week, Vinyl nights on a Thursday and Karaoke and DJ nights. As highlighted in the series with @cheftomkerridge , pubs are still facing a tough time of it, so it was great to see @thegoldenanchorpub surviving in this difficult climate. Next time you’re in the Nunhead/Peckham area, be sure to pay a visit. 📅 27th July 2024
