Underrated renovated pub in Nunhead/Peckham

I visited the Golden Anchor with my friend last night, great atmosphere and the food was lovely. The host Lona was very welcoming on our arrival, very nice that be greeted with such warmth. All the staff members were friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend a visit to The Golden Anchor.

Thursday night was vinyl night...tunes had us singing and reminiscing. Must wear your dancing shoes

The Golden Anchor pub party atmosphere is simply brill the best in classic and modern reggae music from start to finish 👌 you cant help but dance the night away 10/10 to the DJs and the promoter... The dining experience at the Golden Anchor Pub was brilliant 👏🏾👏🏾 food was very tasty and well presented.. nice friendly atmosphere 10/10 compliments to both chef and staff ...DQ

Great atmosphere and friendly staff, incredible food. Been there numerous times for Sunday lunch or drinks mid week or after work on a weekend. Never fails to disappoint with a lovely atmosphere and a lovely night especially when they have live music.

I’ve been coming every week for the past few months and I love that the variety of events and DJs they put on every week! The staff are so beautiful and friendly especially the owner and her daughter! The drinks are very reasonably priced!

Golden anchor is a lovely venue which caters for the black community. The last Saturday in the month was my last visit 4tune FM radio DJs were gracing the decks playing some sweet tunes of the reggae, rare groove, RnB and soul genre's. My friend and I danced the night away after eating some lovely Jamaican patties with wedges to work the food off ,obviously! 😏.My community doesn't have many clubs left this place is a great place for raving as I did in my 20s ,30s and 40s ,loved it !!

I really like the surroundings, atmosphere and space, I would certainly look to have an event here in the future.

This is a great place, would deffo recommend people coming!! Especially locals.

Another rude public house that is not welcoming

I go here for the clothes swaps and the otjernkihht for a disco. It's a good pub with a welcoming atmosphere.

Lively pub tucked away, met the chef new chef lovely guy, staff were lovely felt like I'd been coming here for years they really aim to please.

Good Vybes on a Saturday with DJ until 2am

Was a quick pitstop but they had a good selection of drinks and the staff were very friendly

Tried to book a table for Mother's Day (11 people) which was way too stressful. Communication seems to be the biggest issue, the night before we received a call informing us that they were unaware of the booking until today! we ended up cancelling all together. Staff didn't seem bothered, no apology made for the disorganised management of our booking.

The staff were informative but it was to loud for conversation at that time. Atmosphere was good but would suggest you check it out for yourself before using regularly. Otherwise it was OK and I will go again.

The pub needs to be looked at by licensing authority. Despite being an offence they asked for 50p for a glass of tap water - from paying customers, in between rounds of drinks! The bartender is a rude woman and we suspect she only tried to pull this stunt as we were a (and the only) brown couple, and she was trying to make a quick few easy quid of us. The pub owner need to know this, if they don't. The person behind your bar claims the manager forces them to do this. This is illegal.

Nice quiet little pub. Proper. Not some trumped up expensive gastro rubbish. Nice staff too.

We stopped by on this rainy afternoon on the way home as I really needed to use the loo, stayed for a pint and...I really loved the atmosphere! The place seems to have been recently revamped, it was extremely clean and you could see how much the owners/staff care for it by the attention to each detail in the furniture and decorations. There's a real wood fire and some classic reggae tunes were playing in the background (hadn't heard Beres Hammond in a pub in ages and my heart just melted). Haven't tried their food but will surely be back for that and some Saturday night jam!

Had the Wednesday special bangers and mash, onion gravy. Did not expect it to taste so good. Great friendly staff and service. Will definately be frequenting this establishment again. I also think Fridays is Jerk night, so my visit back may be quite soon.

Lovely old time pub with a modern twist . Drinks are reasonably priced . The Caribbean menu looks great for the next time we visit Peckham . The landlady was nice and super friendly

Still seen as a pub for the local West Indian drinkers but it's long way from old guys playing dominoes stereotype of my youth. Great service, decent pint of Guinness. Lots of seats inside and out. To sum up its a good boozer, not as "fake" as some of pubs in the area, and I like that.

I have not been 2that pub for many years around 10 or 12year ok from Elvis

Lovely pub. Run by the same Landlady, Lara, for 23 years, and made famous by the Tom Kerridge BBC 1 series #SavingBritainsPubs. It's been updated brilliantly, It's comfortable, good feel to it and really welcoming. A Proper Local

Love this pub! Run by an absolutely lovely and welcoming team. Great food and great atmosphere. A proper genuine south east London local. And great for private party hire including kids parties. So lucky to have these guys just around the corner in Nunhead!

We went here after seeing the Tom Kerridge programme. Lana has done a very good job at turning this place around. The food was nice and the service was also just as good.

Shambles. Chaos. Wasted time. The only take cash. This is not mentioned anywhere on the website,no signs on the door or told to us upon arrival. Waited 1 hour and 10 minutes for food!!! The food was nice. Not amazing. Just good. Not worth waiting an hour. Every single table was complaining about the same issues, wrong order, late orders, waiting for drinks.... WAITING FOR AAAGGGESSSS. No particular sense of urgency from the staff. Lots of customers eventually left. So disappointing. It's also out of the way so a real waste of time. Will not be returning. I took a photo of a table who were so fed up they left full drinks on the table to go home. Several families with children were waiting over an hour for food! Kids falling asleep!

Stopped at The Golden Anchor last night for some post-dinner pints with a friend. Our server Augustus was incredibly warm and friendly, efficient and gave us some great suggestions on beers! Overall, fantastic and quick service. I have yet to try the food but will definitely be back. Thanks Golden Anchor!

Really nice pub with good vibes. Food was tasty too. Would have given more stars but the food took too long to come (90 mins) and the staff were a lil disorganised (would be good to assign waiters their own tables to prevent confusion resulting in long waits before placing orders), if you want to go for the brunch, make sure you order before the cut off time even if seated because some people were left disappointed because of this.

Great drinks, brilliant staff who are really always trying to help and make you feel welcome, good amount of outdoor seats, just a bit of a shame it's on a busy street but certainly not their fault. They've really made the place a great little pub for nunhead.

We booked our table with ease..by phone, as we found out later the website is old and underdevelopment...the food is great ...the wine was a cheeky little number plus I can recommend the ripper ale.

The staff are amazing . So kind and helpful, we visited when we could only be outside and they were so helpful and catering. Would 100% go back agin.

It is possible that I went in on an "off day" but there is zero excuse for an unsavoury attitude. Don't know if they were staff, management or owner but I do know I will never be returning.

The landlady is the real star here, she made the effort to talk to us and made us feel welcome. The pub itself has been recently refurbed and now has rich, dark panneling and splashes of vibrant colour that give it character. The beer selection is small but decent enough and the food is tasty, the jerk wings and curried goat were bursting with flavour. COVID provisions were good and proper with plenty of hand sanitysers dotted around. Looking forward to returning once we're out of the shark infested waters of Tier 3.

What a great local! We went in for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon and wound up staying for four hours. The place has had a nice glow up, with comfortable seating, a roaring fireplace, a revamp of the drinks menu. Good selection of beers, with all the usuals plus some craft beers, wine and a great selection of spirits (including some good rum, which is key for me). The food is well presented and very tasty. I loved the wings, especially the jerk wings, tender and delicious. The goat curry was fantastic too. But the key thing for me here is the friendly vibe. The people here are so lovely! Literally every staff member came over to say hello at some point, very friendly but not overbearing, just enough to make you feel welcome. We also had a nice chat with the landlady/owner; you get the feeling that they really care about what the locals think. Much love and respect to the owners and the team here, you deserve it.

I booked a table for pre birthday eat and drinks, manager say I will save a beautiful table to my surprise we was put at back of house near kitchen and toilet. waited for half hour b4 order was taken, didn't have a drinks menu just food ridiculous, never had any drinks we ask for at this point. we wanted to go because we pay our food advance we waited hour later call server who was more in front of house what a bad experience manageress didn't even welcome me no star. Having seen Tom Kerridges documentary I was full of optimism. How disappointed were we? It was awful! Our promised special table was right at the back next to the toilet. We waited over 20 minutes to be served. There was no wine selection- just Blossom Hill. No full size bottles either- just miniatures. The order of drinks (wine and water) took over 20 minutes to arrive. So 40 minutes in all before we had a drink! The food is overpriced- and took well over an hour to arrive. As for the landlady? Unwelcoming, cold and distant. Tom needs to prepare himself for a loss on this one. We won’t be going there again and will be telling our neighbours and friends not to waste their time or hard earned cash in there.

All thanks to Tom Kerridge for making the BBC2 series ‘Saving Britians Pubs’ and feel rather guilty to admit that after living in Nunhead since June 2011, I finally visited this transformed lovely pub. Have not yet seen the documentary however the avalanche of positive feedback convinced me to put Dec 2nd 2020 in my quite empty diary. From the moment I crossed the threshold to my leaving was a wonderful experience. To walk into a pub full of customers these days can be quite a novelty, not here every table was occupied, and I understand the majority were Golden Anchor virgins. All the staff were so friendly and despite being so busy, the delightful Lana who runs the show went out her way to engage in conversation with me and all the customers which I am sure is quite rare in most pubs. I was bowled over by Lana’s enthusiasm positivity and sheer personality. Running the pub for over twenty years, with so many struggles in the height of an international pandemic you risked everything giving the pub a makeover. The Curry Goat with rice n peas with salad and plantain was to die for, delicious and reasonably priced at £12. So good was the meal that before leaving I asked the guy serving the tables if I could compliment the Chef, he replied ‘I am the chef’ With such a wonderful atmosphere, delightful staff, a terrific drink selection and wide ranging menu, what more could one ask for? Lana be assured that it will not be ten years before my next visit!

I've never been but having seen it on TV, I want to be a regular! Looks like it's definitely worth an Uber ride!!!

Just stopped here for a quick pint with my brother the staff were kind and welcoming, so we stayed. We enjoyed it so much me brought all our friends, we stayed for the food!!! It is amazing I recommend the pork , the food will blow you away. The kitchen is the best kept secret in South London !!! Drinks well priced and lovely staff - coming back asap.

Management is always friendly and so are the staff. This place is clean and fresh. I was very impressed with how clean the toilets were. Atmosphere was lovely. What a beautiful night out for me and my friend.

I've never had a 'local' pub, but if there was one laid out in my destiny it would be the golden anchor. The pub landlady was astonishingly friendly (after six years in london I didn't think there was such a thing) and the pub itself is really cool. Big fan, sign me up. Give it some love.
