The vendor made sure I knew it was cold before purchasing. The stilton and pork pie is great both cold and rewarmed. I appreciated the guidance.

I'm afraid I have to downgrade my 5 star review. The staff as always are amazing but unfortunately the quality of the pies has dropped. The pastry is not what it used to be I don't know if this is because they bag them up to soon after cooking but its definitely lost something in the texture which is what put Mrs Kings above other pies. Also the filling is not as tasty as it used to be, its a shame but it seems something had changed and its not for the better.

I ordered a pork and stilton pie. I asked for it to be heated. The lady said "sure, and then we'll wait for it to cool down again, because you eat this cold". Some could find her slightly rude but I loved the sarcasm. The pie was absolutely delicious and the best one I've had so far. I still think you could heat it and it would also be delicious, as the fat would loosen and make it juicy.

I'm involved in running a pork pie appreciation society. Today we had our Xmas meeting. One of our regular amateur bakers was unable to make the meeting, but decided to submit 2 of your pies via a friend. I have never tasted anything so disgusting. The pastry was soft and anaemic, and the meat content was poor. How you can call it a Melton Mowbray pork pie I'm uncertain? If it's made anywhere near Melton I would reconsider your choice of baker. If. It's made anywhere else, likewise resource your baker. The pies were disgusting. That definition is being complimentary. I attach an image of a proper pie brought to our meeting by an amateur baker. Please take note of what a pie should look like!!

Terrible service from this lady, I politely asked for a pie and mentioned that I'd like it to go. She began shouting at me for no reason, calling me an idiot and insisting that it was obvious everything there was for takeaway. The young lady who ordered in front of me was treated with courtesy and asked if she wanted to dine in or take her order away. It was incredibly humiliating, an arrogant woman mistreating people without any cause. I regretted my purchase there; there were other places and unfortunately, I made a terrible choice buying from a bitter and prejudiced woman. I checked the reviews on TripAdvisor and Google, and there are comments similar to mine. I do not recommend this place, especially if you're in London just for a visit. Mrs Kings pies used to be very good and fresh, and would sell out quite quickly, but recently they don't seem to be selling so well. We used to enjoy a pie whe we visited Borough Market. This is the second pie we've had that did not taste too fresh, as if it had been hanging around a little too long! so we binned it. I should have taken it back but it was just too much hassle to go back. Maybe the business is failing or it was just an off day, who knows, but we don't think we'll risk it again... especially not with pork. Seriously, someone needs to get a grip or stop selling food... just an opinion. Just as an aside, I will add that the lady working there, we found, was helpful and reasonably friendly.

They come in different sizes and also they do freeze and defrost fine if you want to stock up! Do yourself a favour and buy a jar of the piccalilli from The Ginger Pig round the corner and have that at home with the pie, it will bring joy to your life.

A rather dour granny who sells the tastiest pies. I have to concur with Sylvia Phan that it's all about the pies. Have them with piccalilli and a glass of stout for an extra special treat. For the uninitiated, these pies go back to the Middle Ages and were eaten at room temperature, and like Cornish Pasties, were taken along on picnics and as travel food. I kept mine on the windowsill of my hotel room for a few days before getting to it, and it was fabulous!

The pies and pasties were delicious and eaten at room temp (or “cold”, depending on when you visit) just as they ought to be according to the traditional cuisine. I liked the pie. The pork was great, the pastry yummy. Personally I don’t like congealed fat but I do like ketchup on eggs and eat hot dogs so there’s that. It’s what we are accustomed to. I feel bad for the lady selling them because people are rude and ignorant in general in the market/tourist setting - How bout this? educate yourself and think about the weird stuff you eat that you think is normal before assuming everyone is just like you? Finally. I got here on a thursday to be able to buy the pork pies. Normally I'm in London on a Sunday when the market is shut, and I may have to pay the premium to get them from selfridges. If I’m honest, my son eats pretty indiscriminately. But, when something really impresses him, it makes a big splash. Well, there’s a whole story here – I’ll summarize. When we arrived in London, we took the family to the Burroughs Market. My 12 yo son was really disappointed. He expected to buy “stuff” instead of foodstuff. Nevertheless, we bought some foods for dinner. One of our choices was a singular pork pie (buying only one was a mistake). We warmed it a bit at home and… oh my!! It was wonderful. Our son asked for pork pies for the rest of the trip – and on the off chance that he got one, it was never as good as Mrs. King’s. This is a London Top 10 kind of food!!

This is a spacious two bar pub that has the main bar located at the front and a similar sized bar located at the rear. The decor here is contemporary with an eclectic mix of colourful and traditional furniture and bold fixtures and fittings. Just by the servery in the front bar is a table of dominoes which is a regular fixture here. At the front of the pub is a cosy outside space with parasols. The beer line up was all keg and included familiar mainstream brands. I decided on a Camden Hells lager, my pint hit the spot, price point was a tad above average. This pub has served food in the past, but I couldn’t see a food menu when I visited. We arrived just after 5pm on a warm Saturday afternoon in July. The pub had not long opened and was fairly quiet with one other local punter in attendance. We got talking to the Landlady and a member of the bar team, both were friendly and welcoming. It would seem this place comes alive in the evenings, it opens most days late afternoon and has a late license at weekends. This pub shows sport on Sky and TNT, has Dominoes practice three nights a week, Vinyl nights on a Thursday and Karaoke and DJ nights. As highlighted in the series with @cheftomkerridge , pubs are still facing a tough time of it, so it was great to see @thegoldenanchorpub surviving in this difficult climate. Next time you’re in the Nunhead/Peckham area, be sure to pay a visit. 📅 27th July 2024
