We booked a table for valentines day, our first visit to the pub. Very dissapointed in the Valentine menu, starters included camembert (for 2) expected a decent portion but was very small with 2 slices of bread, main course was average (vegetarian option was stodgy & bland) we opted not to have dessert, told server that we weren't happy, response was basically 'oh dear" for £45 a head, I expected some decent food, a nice atmosphere & a bit of effort to provide a special atmosphere but nothing said valentines except the menu! We specifically chose this pub after looking at reviews & because we wanted to support a local business. We asked for the £14 service charge to be removed which they did but clearly didn't care that we weren't happy. Shame, we will go elsewhere next year

The Royal Oak in Hawkhurst has garnered significant attention for its exceptional Sunday sharing roasts, becoming a viral sensation among food enthusiasts. Located in a Grade II-listed building on Rye Road, the pub offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a hearty meal. The sharing roasts are designed to serve up to four people, with meat options including whole roast chicken, leg of lamb, beef short rib, and pork with crackling. Prices range from £39 for the chicken to £65 for the slow-cooked sous vide beef short rib. Each roast is accompanied by generous portions of crispy roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and large Yorkshire puddings. Additional sides, such as oversized pigs in blankets and creamy cauliflower cheese, are available for £4 each. Reviewers have praised the quality and quantity of the food. One diner described the beef rib as "to die for," noting its tenderness and rich flavor. Another highlighted the generous portions of meat, roast potatoes, and vegetables, emphasizing the meal's value. Due to the popularity of these roasts, it's advisable to book in advance. The Royal Oak serves their Sunday roasts until 6 PM, accommodating both early and late afternoon diners. In summary, The Royal Oak in Hawkhurst offers a memorable Sunday roast experience, combining quality ingredients, generous portions, and a cozy atmosphere. It's a destination worth considering for those seeking a traditional British meal with friends or family.

Had a terrible meal here over Christmas. Bean cassoulet with hake fillet. the cassoulet wasn't a cassoulet rather a mixture of dry mashed up beans scraped into a mound with the consistency of overly dry mashed potatoes. The hake was dry like it'd been cooked for an hour. Sent back and offered a burger which was edible but nothing better than you get at a fairground with the chips hastily thrown across the plate. Overly long wait for food considering we were the only group in there when we ordered. Not worth another go considering the prices and competition

A 3 month wait for a Sunday roast, it was ok but very overpriced, especially as also added a service charge, I prefer to tip myself, only had about 2 desserts left to choose from on the menu. Very disappointing. Definitely not very accessible, no disabled bays, it’s not about the walk it’s the wider bay I need to get out the car and my equipment, and it’s an very tight small car park. It’s all about the money.

I came here as part of a large group to try the shared roast. It was a fantastic meal! The lamb was cooked to perfection with excellent vegetables. There was plenty of food and we even left with a box of leftovers! Thank you for a lovely meal!

What a beautiful, cosy, warm, and welcoming pub. The staff were welcoming and attentive, and the sharing roasts are huge and delicious. I would definitely recommend booking, although it is very popular so make sure you book in advance.

Watch this place, they fine paying customers for parking without making them aware. Signage is poor and let's be honest, it's in the middle of nowhere you wouldn't expect to pay to park in a restaurant car park, I would comment on the food but this gets in the way of saying anything good, and I'll add an update following a very unprofessional reply from the owner....with that attitude my friend i doubt you'll be in business for long

8 of us came for Sunday dinner after seeing it on Instagram, travelled over an hour with young children to try the roast beef, and it did not disappoint! The food was piping hot, cooked to perfection and the portions were very generous. The staff couldn't do enough for us, and packaged up the leftovers (which made 2 days worth of lunches for my wife and I). Wonderful experience and we will return as soon as we can!

Hi, I’m writing this with a heavy heart tbh as we had booked 6-8 weeks ago. We arrived at 4…. Booked at 4.15 to find the car park full, not a huge issue as we sat and figured someone would leave which they did. Upon arrival it was instantly visible that the restaurant was over booked. Staff were clearly stressed and had no clue of who was arriving and leaving. We had a drink at the bar and were told our table would be ready shortly. After nearly 45 mins and more people arriving I asked again when it would be ready. I was told ‘ I’m sorry we are setting up the private dining area for you now. ‘ ten mins passed and we were directed to our table. We were shown into the private dining room where a party were at the end of there lunch…… a table which consisted of a plastic table and chairs with a table clot …… we had now intruded on a lunch they had paid for to be private. At this point it was too much. We unfortunately left with hungry bellies and a disappointing feeling.

Lovely food, but loud and chaotic considering we wanted a peaceful Sunday but understandable given the hype! We had beef which was incredibly tasty, as was all Other dishes (except cauliflower cheese - watery) and service was chaotic but good natured so forgivable. Dog barking constantly didn’t help with the furore but easily just bad luck.

Travelled to Hawkshurst yesterday after seeing the sharing roasts going viral. Booked six weeks back and been waiting patiently to see if it was all hype or not. I can safely say they delivered and lived up to the hype. Between us we had 2 sharing roasts beef & lamb both meats cooked well and plenty to feed 4 x adults & 2 x kids. The gravy is next level best meat juice I’ve had in a while. 100% recommend this place

We had a dinner reservation for Sunday, they called and asked us if we wanted to pre book our roasts as they are popular, they are in a tray and serve 3-4 people. We had a Chicken & Beef, Chicken first - very small just about enough for 2 kids, undercooked parsnips and carrots and pigs in blankets. Beef - The beef was fatty and didn't fall apart - the carrots, parsnips and pigs in blankets were nice and roasted, TBH - £69 for the beef is extortionate - Defo only for 3 persons (the a £23 pp dinner) The puddings well we opted for sticky toffee with honeycomb ice cream - the portion was tiny and the pudding very thin - it looked like a small brownie £7.95 defo not worth that. The service was fine , a little slow but they were busy. The insta post makes this look fab, but its more of a gimmic and i think that is what you pay for

We were visiting Hawkhurst but didn't stay at The Royal Oak. We had drinks on a few occasions, really friendly, welcoming staff, cosy log fire, clean and very dog friendly. We didn't try the food but they served a rather nice local ale.

AVOID! So unnecessarily rude! Dreadful service and attitude. Why is this tolerated in such a lovely location? Just horrible staff, over priced and needlessly offensive

This a great pub in Hawkhurst and I decided to have lunch before I went to work. I must commend Harry as well as Alfie, who were both very accommodating and welcomed me with a smile. They reacted quickly to any requests that I had and the food tasted great. Also, their lovely dog Mya was lovely. Will be definitely returning to this smashing restaurant. I highly recommend it.

I had an amazing experience at this restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious—every dish was full of flavor, and all my friends enjoyed their meals just as much as I did. The pizza with honey was absolutely incredible! The service was outstanding; the staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel very welcome. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great dining experience! Thank you!

We was here on 8th March and had an amazing time. Great food, fabulous atmosphere and fantastic staff. Nothing was too much for them. The rooms were in theme, clean comfy and just perfect. Breakfast was, again, spot on. Lots of choice and great portions. Shout out to Russ and Carys. See y'all soon!
