This is a fabulous pub to attend especially if you are a female on your own. I have been going to this pub for many years now and as a real ale drinker I would like to say they are kept exceptionally well. The barstaff are very friendly and helpful and as someone on their own make you feel very safe. I can't recommend this l9vely local pub enough.

Slightly away from the town centre, but well worth the extra 5 minute walk. Cask ales & keg beers served to the highest standard. Quality wines & real ciders. A superb gin & whisky selection extends beyond the usual brands. You are greeted with a warm welcome and can enjoy live music on Saturdays or festival weekends. Additionall events support good causes.

Very comfortable pub a short walk from Tunbridge Wells center. Cosy interior with a very good selection of local ales available. The two I tried were in great condition. Unfortunate update: It used to be 5 stars, it used to be amazing. A friendly local pub with friendly local people. Sadly it's now just a garden variety pub with staff that mostly do as best they can (depending how busy it is) but have trouble with basic manners sometimes. It's a shame, but as long as you're not expecting a Shire-like pub that feels like home whenever you walk in, then you'll be fine. Food has sadly taken a rather big downturn, but there's a pizza van outside on Friday (sometimes Saturday as well) which you can take indoors to eat with your pint, which is good, but not a ringing endorsement for the chef, if you know what I mean. (I left my old review here for a fair comparison, it used to be 5 stars) Absolutely wonderful pub. Friendly staff, great cask and special ales, beers and ciders. Live music every week, fabulous food. Absolutely brilliant.

We visited the Royal Oak on a Sunday in June. The food wasn't bad and the service was good, but when the bill arrived, there was a 10% covid charge! when we questioned this, we were told that we could take it up with the owner and the charge was " to keep the pub open". A service charge is one thing...but a covid charge?? Well, having had to pay that, we did not feel like we wanted to leave a tip. Needless to say, we will not be back. Time was when no veg could be served at an English table unless boiled to shreds. Now carrots, broccoli, parsnips are barely submerged in hot water before flung on the plate uncooked. The Royal Oak, a pleasant Victorian boozer near Calverley Park, is no exception. Steak pie with all the Sunday trimmings, was great, but, oh, the bullet-hard veg. A pint of Harvey's Old went down splendidly. Pleasant service.Lovely venue.

Visited with my wife,to try the Vegan roast at £11.95 expectations were quite high, alarm bells sounded early having to wait 40 minutes in an empty pub.Alarm bells ringing louder when we were given steak knives to eat with!? When it was served the toad in the hole was so burnt on top,I had to use my knife as a hacksaw,to get through the top, underneath,it was as dense as a brick totally tasteless,3 roast potatoes nicely charred, stuffing balls you could play cricket with, the seasonal vegetables consisted of boiled cabbage and carrots, topped with watery gravy.Bring me a school dinner anyday.I posted a couple of pictures which show the consistency of the Yorkshire pudding. This was a meal which proved inedible Vegans beware!!!!

Sometimes you have to walk away, and this was on of those moments. tried to like this pub - it has been renovated and the food menu has been updated. However, it doesn't hit the mark. The outside seating and smoking areas still leave a lot to be desired - and the front door is something that would be more suited to a 60's cottage; inside the dark wood panelling has not been updated as most pubs do - by being painted in a lighter grey. Seating just doesn't seem to have been thought through: there is a lovely couch area (well could be if brightened up) though can be successfully occupied by a just one couple - so really doesn't work. The rest of the seating area is just grim, all laid out around the walls - and wait for it: if you sit towards the back of the pub, there is a white chest freezer in full view - totally grim. Who wants to see that when they're out relaxing? It is all in the detail, that is what makes a really great pub - and the overbearing and indiscreet staff, the inside, the outside, the peanuts from a jar to make maximum margin, all combined, make this a poor pub.Could be so much better.

What a great find! This lovely, friendly, back street pub in Guildford just off the high street. Wonderful selection of well kept ales and some lovely, reasonably priced, food. We were lucky to catch the day when they had a “pop up” kitchen run by Greedy Pig. We went for the vegetarian Jack Fruit BBQ burger with skin on triple fries and fresh made coleslaw. Delightful and much better than the high street restaurant we had been planning before pitching up here. Hmmm which ale to try now!

We decided to give the newly tidied up pub a try, maybe for lunch. We walked into an almost empty pub to a warm welcome but Radio 2 was blaring loudly from the TV. We ordered our drinks, and enjoyed the white wine and the very well kept beer but when the subject matter being covered by Jereny Vine became too embarrassing we decided to give lunch a miss. We will probably give the pub another try as the beer was so good and the bar staff so friendly but if the radio or TV are on we will not even order a drink.

I was taken to The Royal Oak for Mothering Sunday lunch and had a lovely time. The daffodils and wine chilling made the table looked very inviting. The food was well presented and delicious, particularly the chef's own starter of mackerel pate and chutney. For the main dish I chose lamb and was not disappointed with the subtle hints of rosemary and garlic. The chef also made a particular effort with the vegetarian options which was appreciated by my daughter. The whole thing was washed down with a rather good bottle of Sauvignon. The pub was lively and the staff very friendly and most helpful.

This pub has had an external makeover which makes it a smart looking place. Inside it remains the dark rather gloomy furnishings and wall panels. The welcome is always warm, with great bar staff, an excellent choice of beers. The new management have introduced regular band nights, quiz teams as well as selected sports events (rugby). The new chef produces excellent pub food, with the best chips I have ever had in a pub or restaurant. They allow dogs in which is always welcome. Slight walk away from the town centre, but worth the walk, as there are no gimmicks here, just a decent honest, popular pub.

We have eaten at the Royal Oak many times, it does one of the best fresh and best homecooked roast dinners around plus there is always something special on the menu. The chef takes that extra bit of pride going that extra mile and the service is 150%. This was one of the first places we tasted the best venison streaks. Anyway on this occasion we decided to go to a three course meal - charity function fully dressed mediavel themed Game of Thrones banquet. The food was simply amazing. The chef bought a Game of Thrones recipe book - what do you cook for banquets for Game of Thrones theme nights? There was game pie. A meat - but more sort of pigeon stew that was so tasty. Vegetables cooked in sauces never dreamed of and so succulent. A black bread backed in ale and marinated in it but wow the taste. Another stew - this time fish and sea food - again the sauce rich and amazing. Chickens legs, lamb chops, anything meaty all marinated in a mediavel sauce. Then the piece de resistance if you have ever seen Game of Thrones - for desert - a bleeding heart. This was all created for Alzheimer's charity by a chef who really has a passion for really good food. The event was fully dressed like a mediavel castle as in Game of Thromes with all the house sigils. And although we go to the Royal Oak often and count it as one of the best pubs in Tunbridge wells to get a decent meal, we think there is only one within a mile of it on par that does a roast of the same quality, this event the Royal Oak totally surpassed themselves and they are equal to no other. If they ever do this event again and we really hope that this event could become an annual event for charity as we think there is a market for this event there for them and for them to succeed again at this event. It wad fabulous in fact it was super fantastic brilliant and whoever missed it you missed a wonderful event. Please Yvonne do this again. It was brilliant. The food was brilliant. The atmosphere was brilliant. The pub was dressed brilliant . In fact everything was so damn bloody bloody brilliant !!!!!

Had a very unexpected visit today. Spent the whole morning running errands and shopping around town and realised I was flagging fast (heavily pregnant) and hadn’t eaten a thing since the night before. Tried eating at the cafe in Victoria Place only to be told they were short staffed and couldn’t serve the area of tables set out. Great. Sent away (along with others waiting) and walked out looking for somewhere else. Walked in to Poppins and immediately greeted and to sit anywhere I pleased. I grabbed the first table and had immediate service approach. Friendly and cheerful. I just had a simple breakfast sandwich and a mug of tea. Delicious. It’s simple fare but just what I needed. I certainly prefer to support a business like this with friendly and tasty food rather than a chain that don’t value their patrons. Will pop in next time I need a quick pit stop for refuelling.
