Visited here after a NT property. Proper old pub with beams, friendly welcome and real ale. We both had a sandwich and a couple of drinks but were surprised when a 'discretionary' service charge was added to the bill. We ordered our food at bar and paid for it at the bar. It was a very strange situation as the barmaid cross out 'service not included' and inked in the 10% tip! We felt too awkward not to pay it so just went along with it. Sandwiches were good though!

Superb local pub that was visited at the end of a long (10 mile) walk in the area. Ample seating out front, inside, and in the back garden. Old-style pub, with beams and low ceilings. Friendly staff who advise about menu and where best to sit. Kid friendly with play equipment out back. Parking on the green out front, with limited parking spaces behind the pub.

Turned up on a Sunday at opening hour 12pm. We were a group of 15 being coming to this pub for the last ten years. We were all wanting a drink and some chips (Nothing complicated) We were not made to feel welcome by the elderly male staff member who quite honestly looked horrified that they had customers who weren’t local people. Looking down over his nose we were told that we couldn’t sit in the garden as it was reserved. So we asked when it was reserved for and told 1330hrs. An hour and half to have a drink and chips, easy, we would be gone before their booking arrived. The staff then said, no food as we hadn’t booked and they were expecting 30 pre orders. We were offered crisps instead. Never had this issue before but clearly they didn’t want our custom. We will be taking it elsewhere where in future. Five minutes up the road where I know we will be welcome. Good luck with your business. X

Beautiful setting, traditional pub with excellent food (choice, quality). The pies and fish-and-chips are staples of the highest quality, lamb Wellington (not always available) is exceptional and the Eastern Europe/Eurasia selection is a rare additional option well worth trying. Great little pub in a lovely location. Decided to take a walk from Groombridge Station (Spa Valley Railway steam day, yeah I know, bit geeky but don't care) and decided to go for a quick drink. The nearest was only 200 yards so not much of a walk and Crown was only about half a mile amble so chose there. Sat outside the front, not too much traffic on country road. Good range of beers including a Czech lager I hadn't had before and whose name I now can't remember (sadly!) Hopefully someone reading this will know! Nice little find and will return when in the neighbourhood.

Lovely 16th century pub in a great setting, although quite close to busy road, so there is some noise if outside. Good beer although would suggest adding IPA on tap. Food (Fish and Chips) was good quality and portions were a good size. Tbh, we couldn't finish our plates but not complaining. Good outside space and friendly staff added to an enjoyable experience.....

Never again! Disgusting! We popped in for 2 drinks & ordered a large portion of chips, £19. We watched the waitress bring out meals for another table & a lengthy discussion on if the large portion of chips were theirs or which l thought could possibly be ours. The chips were put down and the couple at the other table started eating the chips. After a while, 10 minutes, we went up to bar to ask about our chips. To our disbelief the landlord having asked the waitress about the chips, he went over & took the chips from the other table & started walking towards us with the half eaten bowl of chips. Of course we said we were not accepting them and insisted on a fresh bowl. If we had not witnessed this we could have happily accepted the half eaten chips. We definitely would not go back or recommend. If they are cutting corners on chips, they are probably recycling on other food too!!!

Lovely cosy country pub - good for a pint, very friendly. Food unfortunately was not good. Unpleasant gelatinous slab of mash (I hardly know how to describe how strange it was - I didn't know you could get mashed potato wrong), 'pie' that was a bit of puff pastry balanced on a bland filling, tasteless veg. We hadn't eaten all day so we ate it, but I couldn't recommend. My friend said his chips were nice.

It’s a rather shabby place, picturesquely located, but that’s all. With pretensions to Slavic cuisine, but everything is enough for a C grade. If it’s really sad, but it’s like it’s being prepared in the 5th generation, the name seems to remain, but the taste is no longer consistent. Although the prices are quite high for such quality. The overall impression is also quite dull, the pretense of authenticity and such a pastoral style, in reality everything is just old and dirty. Feeling of desolation.

We are a group of 8 friends who came for Sunday lunch after our walk. I had been speaking to Steve about a surprise birthday cake for my husband a few weeks before our visit. Steve has been excellent, he arranged for us to dine in the Smugglers room and the cake that had been arranged was lovely. The food was good as was the service, when we walked in the fire was roaring and the atmosphere was good, the smugglers room is private and away from the fire and the bar but it worked for us as a party of 8 people.

Insufficient staff for the number of tables hence the very slow service . The waitress tried her best .We were not informed when certain food was not available, and instead were just presented with poor alternatives, for example a tiny portion of mash potato instead of potato dauphinoise and fish pie instead of chicken pie. The table wasn’t cleared and properly laid , we had to wait for the cutlery whilst the food was sitting on the table getting very cold . The manager was begrudgingly apologetic and offered a 10% discount off the bill . However, when we said this wasn’t acceptable and mentioned he should have had more staff on for the number of tables reserved , he said “I’m not answering that” and stormed off .He sent the lady back with the card machine and we paid what we felt the meal was worth .

This was our Golden Wedding Anniversary celebration with my husband and daughter and her husband. Firstly we were disappointed that the pub was dark and cold and the fire was not lit. I had ordered in the past fish pie which was full of fish and topped with potato. On the specials board it said that the fish pie came with dauphinoise potato on the top, it turned up with pastry on the bottom and top, and worse, inside the pie was mostly peas, hardly any fish and the prawns were overcooked. They did provide the dauphinoise potato separately eventually, saying that the new chef didn't realise about the dauphinoise potato. The brocolli was so tough I couldn't cut through it and it also came with more peas! I hardly ate any of it and the lady said that I could have a coffee on the house which I declined, I feel that they should have not charged for the meal at all. We have frequented this pub occasionally over the last 32 years but we will never go back again. The other's food was mediocre and the whole experience was so disappointing !

A group of five people met for lunch at this pub. We each paid separately for our meal. Before payment a 10% surcharge was added by hand to the bill. We were told that there is a 10% surcharge for eating inside the pub. Upon payment of the bill, an amount that appeared to be the equivalent of the added on surcharge was taken out of the till in cash and put in a pot. Very odd!!!! I ordered one of the East European dishes. Plov. When it arrived the garlic was raw. Uncooked. Not rich and sweet. The garlic is supposed to be oven roasted. The plate was sent back. The plate came back minus the garlic. I was asked if I could eat the food without the garlic. I said that rather defeated the whole point. The plate went back. The plate came back with garlic that had obviously been cooked in the microwave. The garlic was like rubber. Not rich and soft. I complained I was told that the garlic had been cooked the way it always is cooked. Rubbish. I know this to be untrue as I have had plov before. One of my friends had his plate brought out. It was not as he had ordered. The plate was taken back. Another plate was brought out. With the wrong food on it. This plate was sent back. The correct plate was then brought out. On the plus side. The food itself was very tasty. We should have been offered some kind of recompense for the poor service. We were not. When I ordered the coffees they should have been complimentary. They were not. All in all an unsatisfactory experience. And because of that we shall not be returning.

I’m new to the area and love experiencing new places to eat. However this is one place I won’t be going back to. I’m not sure if there are new owners but the 4.6 google reviews made me think it would be good. Sadly the staff weren’t great and the food was mediocre. Arrived and sat down no problem, asked the waitress what ales there were but she didn’t speak great English and made me go to the bar to “take a look”! Only ordered mains as no starter specials and the menu ones had bog standard options. As a main we went for the fish pie and venison shepherds pie (both topped with Dauphinois) however when they arrived, I was given the “fish” pie which was topped with what appeared to be crushed potatoes (later found out this was supposed to be mash)! It turned out that the meals were given to the wrong party members (just 2 of us) as I noticed mine was brown underneath. Anyway, no one came back so I took the venison shepherds pie up to the bar to explain we were expecting a different potato topping, not problem to get it changed but came back out 10 minutes later with questionable Dauphinois (as didn’t look the same as the fish pie) and stone cold veg, so clearly the dish wasn’t redone. Both pies lacked flavour and filling, it was predominantly potato on both and my partner even questioned if it was actually venison! Drinks expensive too. All in all very underwhelming.

Good food in a historic building. Generous quantities but good quality. For some people one of their sandwiches would be more food than they'd eat for lunch. Prices are reasonable considering and the people who serve go the extra mile. Just a word about the beer, Harvey's of Lewis make one of the reference "Real Ales" and this pub keeps it well. Went to Crown this evening and was served by a lovely young lad who was quick and efficient. The pub is spacious with inside areas, cosy bar, restaurant and outside tables - everything was clean and I noticed the barman was constantly wiping/cleaning the bar. Parking in front and car back in the back. Ordered a brie ploughman's and mac and cheese with a portion of chips. All came out in a timely manner it was hot, fresh and delicious, plentiful and certainly ticked all our boxes. We would certainly recommend and will be back shortly. I feel so very sad that we have just come out of difficult times with Covid and now an increase in utilities. You have to feel sorry for the staff and owners as they are doing their best to accommodate and please so many people. It would be such a shame to loose these quaint pubs from our villages and although I respect your reviews I do think you should consider before you write such negative and damaging comments. On the continent people take time to enjoy their food and beverages, talk and laugh with friends and enjoy themselves. Again I would recommend and please try it for yourself you will have an enjoyable tasty meal.

Despite assurances that the food would be coming soon, at 2.15 with still no sign of food, we left. Reason given was that people had all arrived at once. There were 11 people in the pub! At least they did the decent thing and did not charge us for our drinks. If people arrived without booking then they should not be given priority and should be told that there may be a delay in ordering food. We were not told there would be any delay upon arrival or at any time after ordering that there could be a delay. If they were people who had booked then they should not have taken our booking. Came here for my grandad’s 85th birthday, no one even took notice regarding this special day or making it special by any means. We came in as the first people to arrive, we were taken to our seats. We waited for 35 minutes before even getting a drink or some water which is outrageous considering I am 38 weeks pregnant and my grandparents are elderly. I did shout across saying excuse me and was ignored by a lady. I ended up going to the bar as my poor grandad was standing there when he is not great on his feet for around 10 minutes trying to grab someone’s attention for drinks. I eventually stopped a lady who was going to just carry on walking, I explained we have been waiting for 35 minutes, she advised several people came in at the same time so they were in dated. I explained that all I wanted to know was were we go the bar to order food and drinks or would someone come to us, she advised they will come to us. Bare in mind we were the first ones there and they were serving drinks and food to others before us is ridiculous when we were the first ones in. When we eventually got round to ordering drinks the lady did apologise, though we were quite frankly annoyed we accepted this. My nan was ordering a spritzer and the lady was saying well what one and my Nan said with lemonade because she didn’t understand what was being asked, lady came across quite rude when questioning my nan leaving her feeling embarrassed. There was also quite an attitude in the way this lady spoke, whether that was an accent thing or not. When our drinks eventually arrived I got given a cider when quite clearly I said appetiser and I’m heavily pregnant so you did have to laugh. The man went back to the bar and sorted this. There was no heating (though it’s summer it’s very cold in there). Also lights were not turned on straight away and were incredibly dim when they were on. Food arrived, I had the burger which was not the best I’ve had, bacon very fatty and didn’t seem cooked properly. The burger was quite pinky. The only thing good was the chutney jam inside, the bun, coleslaw and salad. The chips were processed and tasted awful. Temperature was nice and hot though. My step father advised his fish & chips was incredible and you could not fault it. My nan advised the fish pie was lovely and my grandad finished his plate so assuming his was up to standard. After food we were served by a lovely lady with glasses who I must say made the experience that little bit better and could not fault her, a credit to the team for sure. She served us hot drinks in a timely major which was lovely followed by pudding which again was lovely. We then squared up and left. Overall, I would not come here again and I’m appalled how this place has treated myself being pregnant and also my grandfather who is elderly and especially on his birthday when it was supposed to be a delightful and joyful experience. Lots of flies! And crumbs still left on the table. It was so difficult to get anyone’s attention that I wasn’t able to successfully complain. It’s a shame we have wasted such a huge amount of money especially in these hard times. I do wish the pub take note from this and I would appreciate a response/resolution though I’m sure this will be ignored.

What a disappointing lunch this my first visit with a walking group. 45 minutes wait for a Caesar salad with cold chicken at £16.95 chosen for speed of service and hardly a diner in sight. We were told booking was unnecessary mid week and only...

Thank you for the superb food you provided us with yesterday.good portions and nicely presented dishes. We have not been for about 5 years but the food quality remains the same This does not apply to some pubs at the moment. A lovely old ambience in the pub !! I shall be returning with the walking group hopefully in the not too distant future.

Great pub, great food, but think you need to book as it is popular , charming character, seats out the front, and seating / patio at the rear of pub.

To be fair I looked up the reviews before eating here and seeing loads af 5* perhaps contributed to being a bit underwhelmed. Service was painfully slow 45m for mains and 30m+ for 3 desserts (two the same, one ice cream). Think perhaps ordering off the "specials" board was a mistake, as my fellow diners enjoyed their main menu dishes. If it was based on my sole experience I would not return however everyone else seemed to enjoy food so on balance 3* given. Honest review - Avoid the specials, and expect a leisurely service.

First time that I have been to this pub. The food was excellent. Service was great and courteous. I had a starter of baked camembert with bread and lovely mixed salad. For the main course, Lamb Wellington with dauphinoise potatoes, broccoli, Cauliflower and carrots with a red wine jus - absolutely delicious, but I couldn't finish it all! So no pudding for me! Beer well kept and smooth. They also had a magician there when I visited and his tricks were amazing. I've seen him before - Adam Smith from Royal Tunbridge Wells - he gets better every time I see him. Strongly recommend the venue, although it's a busy pub, so get there early as very popular. Not surprising considering the quality of the food.

I popped in here twice last weekend as I heard great things about their food especially their international menu and I was not disappointed at all... My first venture I had a Russian cabbage roll dish (Golubtsyi, translated as "little pigeons")... a hearty dish consisting of cooked cabbage leaves wrapped around a filling of ground beef, rice, onions, carrots and spices slow cooked in a tomato based cream sauce (possibly sour cream, or cream and a squeeze of lemon)... Served with a creamy mash and accompanied with some pickled mushrooms & cabbage and a cooked tomato... Very filling and satisfying! My second dish the following day was a dish called pelmeni, Russian dumplings that consist of a seasoned meaty filling wrapped in thin, unleavened dough which is served in a tomato/cream sauce... Basically little pillows of deliciousness! The atmosphere was a typical country pub setting with a nice welcoming feel, where you don't feel rushed and can just sit there and relax over a pint! Staff were lovely and accommodating... Recommended!

Great place, traditional pub, fire places and low beams, friendly staff. but…..unfortunately like a lot of pubs now, it appears that you have to book a table, No more just popping out for a swift one. Walked in on Friday around 5pm for some well deserved drinks, only to find that literally all the tables were booked for 5:30. So standing room only. Managed to grab 2 stools by the bar but felt we were in the way. So We quickly finished our wines and proceeded to Fuggles. We do love this place though and we will be back but just a bit disappointed that we can’t just pop in 🥲 and might have to book to just have a drink

First and last time I go here. I ordered king prawns and nachos- clearly spoken to the waitress, yet was given battered king prawns with a sauce. I thought the nachos were on their way or were forgotten. Asking if it came with nachos, the lady admitted she got it wrong, no sorry....so am I getting the nachos? Do you want the nachos she asks... I say yes of course.... because of this odd exchange I realise it was not a missing part- it was a different meal. Unbeknownst to me, she was asking if I wanted the original order after I'd eaten the wrong one! We wait for the bill too long and then they can't find the card reader. I pay for mine separately and have to pay £17 for two tiny meals, one of which I didn't order. What should have been £7.50 turned into £17 for a small lunch, all because I was given the wrong meal. My friend paid for hers separately but then realised she was also paying for the tip for both of us included. Tip? For you picking up food from the kitchen and putting it at my table, and getting my order wrong? It was so expensive and atmosphere was dire because of the service. Never again. Their communication was bad and I shouldn't have had to pay for their mess-up.

Thinking of eating in Tunbridge Wells? Quite honestly, if you like fresh French cuisine made by a French culinary genius in The Pantiles. Beef bourguignon truly good. Moules marinière in TWells? Atmosphere always good Service always good
