What a place... Went for my birthday, never had a bottomless brunch before, this being my first experience and loved it. The friendliness of staff, that 'your important to us' certainly shone through. Great choice of drinks, fabulous atmosphere, music, even karaoke. What a wonderful, friendly, homely place, highly recommended. Nothing is too much for the staff who went above and beyond making our visit unforgettable. Food is homemade and delicious. Thank you all. We will be back xx

Been today with my mum for afternoon tea, it was absolutely beautiful can’t fault it at all, the choice you get for sandwiches, savouries, deserts and even home made yorkie puds with a choice of fillings is amazing, nice little family run pub and they can’t do enough for you, would highly recommend it to anyone and will definitely be going again, Thank you so much guys.

We had an Easter meal for 12 and could not fault it. We all enjoyed our meals. You had the choice of 1, 2 or 3 courses which was really good. Not everyone wants a big meal. The portions were fine and must say the lamb was very tasty. The vegetables were not overcooked which sometimes happens.

Very hot day called in for a lunchtime light bite, they don’t do light bites, after letting them know we were there, we had to wait a while to be served, i think there was a party in the garden, it was too busy for staff to deal with. We ordered a pizza and chips to share, the pizza was bland and the chips were not fully cooked. Had high hopes now it’s under new management, very disappointing, i wouldn’t recommend.

This was our second visit within a month and we'll be back again in The New Year. The Royal Oak can cater for a table of 15 without breaking a sweat. Service is prompt and very friendly but without feeling rushed. The menu is great pub food, between us we had nearly everything on offer and everyone enjoyed it. I had lasagne both times and will have it next time aswell as it is absolutely delicious. Fair to say The Royal Oak is not trying to be anything too fancy (which is reflected in the prices) but what it does it does exceptionally well. Booking is essential on a Sunday because it's clear that people come back week after week and it's easy to see why. Thanks and see you next time...

Places in the area were booked up for Sunday lunch so tried the Royal Oak for the first time who booked us in within the hour. The place is a bit tired, needs a lick of paint and an update but was still busy with couples and families. We ordered 2 courses for £7.50, bargain! Although not 5*, the food was well cooked and tasty! Just what we needed! Beer cheap too. We took our dog in whilst we ate so bonus! Staff were attentive and friendly. Would recommend and return.

I'm not sure what to say. They have no chef, haven't had for 5 weeks. They have no booze due to no delivery, on a Saturday night. Call me a cynic but I'd have had an order being delivered on Thursday for a Saturday night were I to be running a pub. Lord knows how long the few mains that were on offer had been frozen for. The atmosphere was quite relaxed and everyone around us seemed to be enjoying their meals as well. After a warm, friendly greeting and top quality service yet again, we will be coming back to the Royal Oak! A beautiful little family run business serving very good quality home made food, I had the creamy garlic mushrooms, followed by spinach and ricotta cannelloni and warm chocolate fudge cake with icecream. The others had a mix of chicken goujons, chicken in mustard sauce and roast turkey dinners all with very generous portions! Lovely time had by all and we will definitely be returning, can't fault a thing, nice, clean dining area which looks excellent from its renovation, friendly staff and fab quality homemade food to offer!

Didn't have the first 2 choices for the kids as they'd 'run out ' and this was early lunch time so not very good! We waited 45 minutes for it to turn up and mine was incorrect. I didn't get an option to correct it just a mere ' sorry '. The food itself was OK....just OK! I certainly will not be returning as there's so much better around the local area or even within a ten minute drive.... It'd be worth it.

I guess the fact that there was only one car in the car park at 7.15 on a Friday night should have warned us off, but it was only half a mile from our B&B, so we could walk there.... No real ale and draught cider was not available. The main courses (we had both chosen the same - vegetarian pie) were under heated, and not apparently recently made, accompanied by OK chips and a mound of under-done frozen peas. As bad a plateful as I can recall. We chose an ice-cream dessert on the grounds there was little they could do to spoil it.The bar was empty and there was just one other couple in the restaurant area. When we left, despite the offer of special Friday night deals, there was still just the one car in the big car park....

I see from other reviews that there is a refurbishment programme under way. This is sorely needed to be honest as it was the only thing which let down a very pleasant meal. The first thing which greets you at the door is a very strong chemical smell from the toilets. The carpets in the bar and conservatory are quite threadbare and those areas could do with a deep clean. I was also a little disappointed that some of the children's play equipment has obviously not been checked recently for safety. We stopped at this pub deliberately as we saw the play equipment in the beer garden - unfortunately most of the equipment was for slightly bigger children but that is not really a problem. There was a slide that had rusted and bent to the point where it wouldn't be safe for a child to climb and it needs removing really. With all of that in mind I did think that the food was of a very high standard- I was very impressed with the burger which was obviously home made and presented in a very appealing way. The staff were very accommodating for children and I really could not fault the service. All in all if the surroundings can be sorted out this will be a lovely family pub.

The room looked looked lovey. Because there was so many of us we asked for a buffet instead of a meal - which they were happy to do. It was the most fantastic buffet with extremely high quality food. Everyone in my family commented on the quality and amount of food available. There was an extensive range of drinks, reasonably priced and were flowing into the wee hours of the morning! The staff were friendly and professional and the service was brilliant! I would definitely recommend the establishment for a family occasion. 10/10 !!!

I last visited this pub some 30 years ago and, to be honest, it has hardly changed other than food is now served. The decor is shabby and dated, set firmly in the 1970's, and the dining room / conservatory is bordering on the ramshackle. However, the food was pretty good. Value for money at two plates for the price of one, with hot and well cooked food, although the double cooked chips were overdone. There was only one hand pulled draught beer and one porter on offer although a variety of lagers were available. There was no wine list as this is currently being revamped. Overall, I don't think we'll hasten to repeat the experience.

Well decided to have tea out tonight at the Royal Oak and once again not disappointed.Four of us and three of us started off with pork belly bites absolutely delish then the other body had soup. Then mains a mixture of lasagne, chicken bites, braising steak and steak and wings all again lovely and hot. Just enough room for deserts of chocolate sundaes and waffle and ice cream. Now at home all four of us stuffed from our teas. Well done Royal Oak

Visited the Royal Oak on a hot Wednesday afternoon in July 2015 with my wife after a recommendation from our friends, it's only a 10 minute walk from our house and I had seen bands playing at the pub on a Sunday when passing to go the the garden centre next door. It has a lovely outdoor area where you can eat your food but the seats need a little tlc to make it more of a memorable experience, the service was prompt but this was due to it being quite. The owner offered a bottle of wine with our meal at a discount price as well as a money off voucher next time we visit. The food we had in my opinion was average but everything else made it a pleasant experience. We had a gift voucher given to us at Xmas for the Royal Oak and intend to use it in the next few months to see if the quality of food has improved which I believe had after talking to our friends who often visit this pub. I'll write another review after my next visit and compare the experience and quality of food.

Visited a few times in 2015 and Royal Oak has been consistently good. Food is home made and freshly prepared / cooked. Meals are nicely presented, the homemade pies are lush and the giant sized puds...well, I daren't visit in January till I've lost some 'christmas' weight. They offer some cracking 'meal deals', 2 4 1 offers and loyalty cards on their own website and Facebook. The thing that keeps us coming back though are the attentive staff who care about their customers, nothing is too much trouble for them. They genuinely do appreciate your custom and it shows. You may even get a free sambuca shot after your food to prove this! ;)Live entertainment is regularly advertised on website. They often have a cracking singer called Imogen and is well worth a trip to see her. Christmas Eve they even had a small 'brass band' playing carols. Give it a go, much better than the big 'uniform' chain restaurants. I'd rather spend my hard earned brass with a local business that genuinely appreciates my custom.

We visited on friday the 27th of November , spoke to Douglas before to discuss options for my cioliac partner. Which is very easy to do here as it's just as simple as what would she like to eat? It's fantastic they can cater for her that easy. As other places, it can be quite difficult. She had the homemade tomato soup with Gluten free bread role. Smothered chicken and a Gluten free Apple pie for desert. She enjoyed it all :) I had the chicken goujons which iv never had so juicy n succulent as these before, normally they can be quite dry elsewhere so these were amazing. I also got the smothered chicken and I had chocolate waffle n ice-cream for desert. Absolutely divine :) we can't wait to return in December to order from there Christmas fayre menu

I have a daughter who is allergic to eggs and nuts. I contacted the pub before making a booking who provided me with a copy of the kids menu. Once I knew what my daughter would want they confirmed that the meal didn't include the allergens she needs to avoid. All this was done very quickly! On the day when we arrived they weren't taking card payments due to a changeover with their provider. No problem, it just may have been helpful if they contacted those who already had bookings for the day so that they could come prepared as my brother had to venture back out for cash. Only a minor issue really.A children's garlic bread starter, 2 adult portions of chicken goujons, jalapeño poppers and chicken wings arrived in good time with a kids pasta bolognese that was requested to come out with the starters. All arrived piping hot and all very tasty. A double inferno burger, a double cheese and bacon burger, a single Jack Daniels burger, a fish pie and a kids chicken nuggets then arrived, again in good time. The burgers all went down well. My fish pie had lots of fish in and although it was topped with mash I also had the choice of chips and new potatoes to be served with it. The vegetables served with it was Savoy cabbage, carrots and peas. The veg was all cooked lovely. And although carrots and peas aren't my veg of choice I did eat some. Then the desserts. There was more of a gap between the main and dessert than we'd experienced before. This didn't bother me at all but my nephew was chomping at the bit ha.Two Cadbury sundaes were devoured along with the gorgeous called caramel profiteroles and the children's Oreo ice cream sandwich. All the above, 2 pints of Bud, 5 diet cokes, a black currant and soda water and a fruit shoot for £68!! Bargain. And a £10 voucher to use if you visit again the following month! If you go expecting good value pub grub you won't be disappointed!

We booked a table after my Grandmother read a glowing review in The Press about the food at The Royal Oak and as this was a special occasion we were all looking forward to our evening out (A family member was moving to New Zealand, it was the last time we would be together for quite some time). I regularly pass The Royal Oak and have always wanted to pop in as it’s fairly local to us. We made a booking on a Sunday evening as it was the only time we could arrange between ourselves. We booked for 6:45 as food service finished at 7. The staff were very accommodating in our request and this wasn’t a problem for them. Let me start with the good points. The drinks were great. As a pub I’d recommend it 100%. The staff were friendly and attentive – constantly checking we had everything and were never rude. The pub itself was great. I could quite easily have enjoyed a few drinks in the snug or by the bar. The presentation of the pub was fine and I had no issues with the layout or decoration as mentioned in some other reviews. All our starters, while taking a while to reach us (30mins), were spot on. No complaints, they were all quite good and well presented. I do not enjoy writing negative reviews but I wish to put forward an honest experience. Firstly the table was not set for our booked time, even though the restaurant was not full. This isn’t a big deal but it slowed down our ordering time. Not all options were available (the ribs or jalapeno pepper starter), which again would have been fine but this was not stated up front which added to our waiting time again as the server had to keep popping back and forward from the kitchen. When the mains arrived they looked fine though the peas were garden and not mushy which is what was ordered. This was probably just a simple mistake but our server specifically reconfirmed we wanted mushy peas on her return from the kitchen so it was odd that the only item confirmed was the one that was incorrect. Never the less we tucked in…Firstly my meal…chicken and steak. The chicken breast was over cooked and had a tough outer layer. It didn’t appear to be grilled (not that it was stated to be, I just expected it as most are when ordered alongside steak). It looked pan fried, which is possible, but due to over cooking it was dry and had a tough exterior. The steak (ordered medium) was very bloody and was medium rare at best. Although the steak was grill marked, it too tasted pan fried. The chips, which were stated in the review to be “delicious; and just like grandma used to make” were just OK. I was disappointed that I had an undercooked steak and over cooked chicken but as I ate over 50% of the meal I didn’t mind paying for it.The second meal (Cajun chicken pasta) was the worst meal. The chicken was rubbery like it had been boiled along with the pasta and it had sinew and blooded veins on as if it had not been trimmed prior to dicing. The sauce was bland, tasteless and powdery. The worst element of the dish was the pasta itself. It was massively overcooked! I do not understand for the life of me how the chef could have let that leave the kitchen. It was so soggy and soft it broke apart on the fork and felt mushy and slimy to the touch. I am not exaggerating when I say it was inedible. I do hope the chef tried the pasta meal when it was returned to the kitchen. I would be amazed if they had been satisfied/proud of that dish. The 3rd meal (scampi) was bland and unseasoned. In addition to the wrong peas the scampi wasn’t fresh and gave the impression it was from a frozen packet (Birdseye or similar) which had just been cooked through. Again this may have been the case and just not stated but it’s not what I expect from a restaurant. I expect unfrozen, freshly prepared and cooked ingredients to order; which is why you go to a restaurant in the first place. It was not what we had expected and was very disappointing.I will say that the pie and the burger meals ordered were absolutely fine and there was no problem with them at all and as such were happy eaten by the rest of our group. The only reason I have not reviewed this as a terrible experience is that the staff were excellent! So professional, chatty, enthusiastic, kind and nice… I could go on. They were massively apologetic too and even slightly embarrassed when it was clear we had not enjoy our meal. They tried everything to put things rights. The dishes were offered to be remade several times, or substituted, but we declined as it was getting late and had waited enough already. The staff removed several items off the bill without any prompting from us, which was a nice gesture but by this point our night had already been a disappointment. The staff even offered us free desserts if we wanted. Also a £50 off voucher was added to our receipt should we wish to go back again in the next few months. All the generosity and apologies from the staff were kind and sincere but we were not looking for discounts or freebies just a nice meal with our family which sadly we did not get. I feel for the staff as it was clear they felt helpless but they did a great job, it was the food that was the let-down. I will not be recommending people eat at The Royal Oak. The annoying part was that my grandmother ended up feeling guilty and responsible for the unsatisfactory evening as is was she who suggested The Royal Oak to us after being tempted by the review. If the chef is changed or there is some serious re-training/re-structuring then I’ll probably give it another go but until then I’ll stick to my usual places and get what I know and expect.

Slow service, lumpy gravy and when we arrived the only Sunday roast was chicken, when we sat down to order amazingly beef was on the Sunday roast. If it was freshly cooked it was exceptionally well done (chewy). Took two hours for starters and mains with two small children. Also apparently children eat free if adults spend £10 or more but not if you sped £10 on the offer 2 courses for £10!!!
