Old Mill in Wakefield

First time we visited, just before Christmas, the food was spot on. On this recent visit it wasn't great. £19.99 for a mixed grill were everything was dry and overcooked, including the egg. Certainly not worth that price. Had a sharing platter to start, which was tasty but there was no bread to use with the dips. We asked for some and was charged £2 for 2 slices of ordinary bread - I mean - really???

A great place to eat. Friendly staff, lovely food. We went for the Tappas style meal with a mix of starters in stead of a main meal. It was ample food and very tasty, presented well and filling.

Nothing against the place. Food is lovely, service is always fine and it's clean. Just the food is never piping hot. Don't get me wrong it's fine but it always feels like it's just been sat there 10mins before they bought it out. Hotest meal we had was our daughters... the kids meals are the ones you expect to be the coolest

Fab bar nestled away near the river. Beautiful building and grounds. Especially nice around the outdoor riverside beer garden. Will definitely return!

Steak was over cooked and was tuff as old boots, chips cooked in old oil, peas nuked in microwave and we're cold and like bullets, mash tasted like instant mash from the 80's and had a load of pepper to try and disguise it, carrot crisps were cold.

Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat. We just called for a drink. Great decor.

We were a family of four here on Mothers day and was hoping that the 3 courses for £27 were going to be somewhat special as I ate previously here for lunch and the food was great! Unfortunately, it was average with loads of minor details missing which for us were too many. Food was either little or large portions so no consistency and not quite warm enough. Sunday lunch was ample however wasn't served with crackling as stated on menu, the Stuffing tasted old and stale and the roasted veg mushy. Belly pork came with an overly powerful sweet sauce and I have a sweet tooth but this spoilt the dish and was served 5 Potato's and a couple of Carrots just shoved on a plate. Very few chips were served with the fish with bullet hard peas and the chocolate torte was floury and wasn't served with the coconut ice cream as stated, just like the Rhubarb gin at £7 was supposed to be served with orange but was just a glass topped up with a full bottle of tonic! I feel no care and attention had gone into any of it! Waiters were lovely, however we had 3 of them serve us so we didn't know where we were and it seemed like they were rushed off their feet. Deffo more staff needed! We were also overcharged when we went to pay and if it hadn't of been questioned they wouldn't have had a clue! Came away disappointed!

I have stopped by this old mill a couple of times and it is a nice place i have to say. One issue i had was distinguishing between staff and visitors. I would recommend some sort of uniform to separate easier make them spot-able a little bit more. Food was okay. A little spicy overall. Didn’t have time to wait very long for service. I liked the drinks. Would i go back? Probably not especially for that particular place, but if i end up being around that corner of Huddersfield some day I wouldn’t mind having tea there again.

First time eating here and will definitely be back. Food was amazing. Ian who served us was very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. He was very helpful. The shared starter was lovely and plenty for 2 people. We had the fish grill , cajun chicken burger , smothered chicken and the duo Korean chicken. All were served hot and fresh and delicious. The puddings were amazing too. I'd highly recommend to anyone thinking of eating here.

We were looked after by Craig & Ian, both very pleasant, really helpful and part of the reason we would go back again. Food was lovely

This place was recommended to me by a friend who knows I enjoy a good pie, the Steak and ale did not dissapoint, full of flavour and a good size portion , full pie not like some outlets who just pop a crust on top.

A tricky one to rate tbh! Positives Great location. The building is large and has character. Calm atmosphere leading to a relaxing, chilled meal. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Ample parking. During warmer months, this would be great to sit outside and relax, looking out over the river. Negatives I didn't feel that the Sunday roast was anything special. I was warm rather than hot, some of the meat a little fatty, and there could have been more veg. The price. For what I received (including drinks), I feel this place is a little pricey. I've no issue paying a premium if the food is of an equal standard, which I didn't feel that it was. I wasn't a fan of the frozen peas either! 🙁 Overall, I'd probably rate this as 3.5, as the food is a major reason for attending, so the positives are somewhat offset.

Had a few drinks in Mirfield town and came back to the old mill afterwards, very handy as we were staying in the hotel next door, the venue is lovely with lots of character as are the bar staff. Very efficient, polite and professional and had time to chat too which is always good in my eyes. Didn’t try the food but it was walked passed us enough times for me to think ‘WOW THAT LOOKS AND SMELLS AMAZING!’ Prices are average. Don’t normally make comment on the toilets (mens) but they were super clean and are very nice and modern! It has a big car park and not far from the motorway, also has a nice stream behind too if you’re into the outdoors

Excellent service , food was as it should be, fresh hot and delicious. Service friendly and professional , Cayllan really looked after us, would definitely recommend it.

Went there, Monday, Barman wants a lesson in hospitality, so miserable and at £6 a pint is ridiculous wasn’t even that nice Won’t be going back

Called in for breakfast. Service was really good, dietary needs catered for and the food itself was lovely. Great overall experience 💯

When you walk in and you already know its going to be bad, went Friday night 9/02/24, first of all the barman wow as much welcome as a fox in a hen house, then we tell him we have a table booked a shrug and a grunt from him and we are showed our table, after 20 minutes of chatting between ourselves WE had to ask for menus, 3 of us went for the Korean chicken well that was another mistake DONT DO IT go for the chickpea curry looked so nice and she said for a Vegan meal wasn't too bad, in all our server was well dreadful, we got the bill wowsers the drinks are so expensive, I'm no cheap skate ask the wife but just wow they know how to charge for shorts, be warned go elsewhere

We had a lovely family meal. Ian was lovely and made us all feel welcome and relaxed, which can be hard with 4 year old twins.

Really nicely situated close to the motorway but in a secluded tree lined area. Ample parking on site and a really nice building with cool interior. I had the steak and ale pie delicious and good portion too. I'm sure we will be back again soon :)

Lovely warm and friendly place. Love the open real fire, lovely welcoming atmosphere. Went for lunch with a colleague, food was amazing. Ian who served us was lovely, very attentive and made us feel really welcome.

Waited 45 mins for our BOOKED time because the table was still occupied. They eventually took us to a different table which felt like a small 'overflow' area of a few tables away from everywhere else, was also cold. Most of the food was ok, the lasagne was horribly burnt. But in fairness, they removed the lasagne from the bill and gave us an additional discount because of the wait.

Absolutely amazing didn't book still found room food was amazing and very quick. We went out last week kids free and it was a shambles so was lovely to be somewhere where I mattered and was looked after will defo be returning all staff and so nice aswell so homely x

We went for Sunday dinner I ordered a3 roast with beef pork and turkey they were all cold my wife ordered a pork roast dinner also cold shocking veg cold I think that it had been what was left from lunch the people next to us complained and were told that they were wrong and that was how you served a roast dinner

Came here for a birthday meal with family The food was average but OK. But the service was poor as most of us all had a starter and they all came at different times which for me was not great. Average at best.

We had our family Christmas Eve meal here, on arrival we got a warm welcome from the staff, it has a lovely cosy atmosphere on a stormy day. The food was excellent and beautifully presented. Reasonably priced and a great selection of deserts. Five star service from the staff, we will definitely be returning ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍

Massive thank you to the awesome little team of 3 who looked after our ladies group today! Even though we know they were absolutely snowed under they were still friendly and attentive and the food was also delicious, the pigs in blankets on the Festive Menu were HUGE!! We will definitely be back :)

Not bad at all for a chain pub, mainly an eating place but they had a couple of decent beers on. Couldn't fault the food and the service.

I had the no leaf salad and it was beautifully presented and delicious. The food was served within a reasonable amount of time and the staff were polite and friendly. The log burner helped to create a lovely warm and cosy atmosphere.

We came here for a lunch meeting and the service by Ian & Bindi was great! The care taken in making us feel welcome was most appreciated. The food was good, came quickly and was reasonably priced. Well worth visiting. Thanks again guys for keeping the open fire burning bright.

24/11/2023 We were celebrating our 39th Wedding Anniversary so booked a table for 12:45. On arrival we were greeted and given a table near the amazing Fireplace. We had a Starter, Main Course and Sweet, all of which were beautiful present and cooked to perfection. Found we were in no way rushed. Finished with a Coffee. So a massive Thank You to the two gentlemen who looked after us.

Great atmosphere, really relaxing. Made for an absolutely chilled evening, you can hear yourself speak!

Friendly staff, dog friendly and a decent menu with a wide choice. We all had sunday roast which were served on large plates but seemed rather small portions. It was enough for me but the men in the group could have done with a few more roasties or some mash. The plates were cold and food only warm not hot. We did highlight that with staff and they made a kind gesture by adjusting our tab at the bar. Thank you.

Food was very nice but the portions were very small (hence score) except for children's meals which were very good. Staff very efficient and lovely atmosphere.

Give it a miss. Food was good but the rude and indifferent staff badly let the place down. Not even a smile from the bar man. If they don't want to be there why should you?

This was our third visit to the Old Mill. We had just travelled over 200 miles and as we was staying at the Premier Inn next door, it was ideal to grab some food after our journey. The car park was empty and as we walked in there was only one family sat eating their meal. There was one guy behind the bar, another male member of staff stood at the bar on his phone and a female member of staff walking around. It took a little while for the female member of staff to come over and acknowledge us. When she did come over she asked if we had booked. We told her we hadn't, to which she said “Well, we're fully booked tonight”. I wish I had taken a photo of the restaurant to show just how empty the place was. She could have easily said something like “ Unfortunately we are fully booked”...but with an attitude like hers she certainly shouldn't be front of house staff. As we went to walk out she said “ If you want to eat here, you'll have to sit on the bar benches”. Sadly with her attitude we decided to leave and eat elsewhere. We wont be returning, shame as our previous 2 visits have been fine.

Very nicely presented place the decor is stunning. Very clean too. Staff helpful and pleasant, didn't eat there but had drink. Not the cheapest.

We just called in on a Saturday lunchtime for a quick snack. Ended up having a 2 course lunch as the prices were so reasonable. The cheese and garlic loaf was delicious!

Called in to do some work with a couple of drinks. Couldn't help my self but order some food as it looked at smelt amazing. I was not disappointed with my order the steak and ale pie was delicious. Will definitely be coming back.

Visited last week, only tables available by the door even though the place was nearly empty, really poor service, staff seemed to want to finish their shift early so the few people that came through the door were told to order early as the kitchen was closing soon. Had to wait ages for food and trust me it wasn’t worth the wait, asked the waitress for another round of drinks only to be told to go to the bar ourselves. Honestly I wanted to walk out before the starters came due to the low level of service but my wife persuaded me otherwise. Wouldn’t recommend and certainly wouldn’t revisit.

Arrived to a half empty pub to be told first, a 45 minute wait for food. Fine, thought. Then the only table is a stool by the door… the other other free tables were expecting people back….hmmm… then when a kind chap vacated his table, magically having seen 4 appetising pies leave the kitchen (I’d gone for a steak and ale pie) I’m told no pie now. The ovens are too busy! Ok, enough. I get it. I’ll go somewhere I’m more welcome. The irony: on the chalkboard in the doorway is a hand written note that reads,”the person sitting near you might be fighting to keep a smile on their face, please be kind”. The irony being I was up here to bury my mum tomorrow and I was just looking for a little taste of Yorkshire hospitality to ease the night away.

Poor service. Had to wait long periods for menus, drinks and food. There wasn't enough staff on.

Highly recommend the seafood grill on the specials!! Service 10/10. Food 10/10. We will be returning

Took the family for a meal, food was good, servive was OK but definately no atmosphere in there. Will ho again at some point ut wont rush to do that.

Great food and service from the staff, booked a table online, as the evenings seem to be busy. We had 3 courses, the special menus they have are fab, Venison Steak was delicious! We will definitely be back!! Thanks again

Decent enough pub grub, price for the food seems fair but nothing spectacular, service is excellent and very friendly The decor is warm and comfortable, I use the pub as a meeting point for work, we don't look for alternatives as it fits the bill perfectly. Your looking at £30 per person for starter, main and 2 drinks

We have just called in here for a bite to eat. Looking at the menu I was spoilt for choice but went for the Korean Chicken which I thoroughly enjoyed. I had 3 scoops of ice cream for dessert which was also lovely. Friendly efficient staff, lovely building, ample parking and clean toilets. An all round enjoyable experience, thank you.

Nice rustic style bar/resteraunt with plenty of seating and parking. Staff were friendly and accommodating. However the food was somewhat of a let down. Had Korean chicken strip starter which had very little sauce on it so was really just southern fried chicken from the freezer shop. Sent them back in for more sauce so they were fine after that. I opted for a steak pie main course n to be honest was absolute nonsense. Had a short crust base very little meat or taste and a puff pastry top. Said to the staff about it but it sadly comes pre packed so I'd swerve that 1. Shining light at the end of all of it was the ice cream Sunday desert it was insanely good even better than the menu suggests.

Lovely big pub. Amazing selection of beers - not seen as many options for a very long time. Food was very nice and a good choice on offer. Manager and staff really friendly. Been a few times and will revisit again when next in the area.

Having used this place before at lunch we decided to eat here for dinner. Big mistake, 3 of the items on the menu we not available. The food was far from good the chips were cold. During the meal around 9.30 all you could hear was vacuum cleaners while they cleaned around after earlier dinners At 10.05 I went to the bar to get more drinks and was told they we couldn't have coffee as they had turned of the coffee machine, when i suggested it was a little early to be closing down i was rudely told ' WE DO HAVE HOMES TO GO TO' I cannot see us returning

Good food; Surprisingly good beer. Good service; Had the mixed grill washed down with a couple of scoops of Landlords IPA. Slept rather well that night 😉

Shocking food. For £15.50 I got a handful of chips and half a chicken breast with bone still in it. Nice service from the guy seating me but the guy who served food dropped it off and scurried off so I had to go grab salt/sauces. Avoid if eating. Probably good for a pint

Poor hospitality. Poor meet and greet. Woman who greeted us was awful. No customer care at all. Actually turned people away when the restaurant was less than half full. Appalling behaviour by a staff matre de.
