Another great home cooked meal at The Royal Oak. Great food at good prices with fantastic friendly staff. Always eat here when staying at Marshland Alpacas Campsite. By far the best place around, and dog friendly. Be back soon, thank you.

We were staying local, so thought we'd support local pub, They had a good wine list & atmosphere was good, arrived early to have a drink beforehand. Had a look at menus and although a variety chose the chicken &Lamb shank, such a shame the lamb was not falling off the bone, because the sauce was great, but was clearly not cooked long enough & the chicken was very dry with no sauce at all. Garlic chicken described on the menu, but couldn't taste any garlic at all with bland potatoes & no sauce. Such a disappointment

Visited here on a Tuesday evening during our recent stay in Arkendale. Main and a beer for £15. We called in for a drink earlier in the day and heard about their famous steak pie. We decided to book a table for that evening and were overwhelmed when the landlady said she’d give us a lift back to our accommodation when we enquired about taxis. On arrival, the pub was full; we were shown to our table, passing by all the amazing servings of steak pie! We were gutted to be told they’d sold out 😂. Hubby ordered the lamb pie which he said was amazing; my burger was standard. Our table was 7.30 pm and a number of the items were sold out. This is a really lovely, friendly, busy pub and well worth a visit. Tip: book earlier to ensure a serving of the steak pie!

Food was very poor, gammon wasn’t cooked, slimly veg as it was all mixed together, yourshire puddings were really chewy, the smallest amount of gravy on the plate, no extra gravy, nobody even came to check how the meal was, we asked to pay leaving pretty much 90% of both our meals and they was visible from the bar (and would of been easy to see there was a problem if anyone had bothered to check but no) no question of the food was ok when paying (which it was not) don’t waste your time or money in this place

This is a pub, a proper pub not pretending to be anything other than a pub. It’s good fresh food, and first time we’ve had a real steak pie for years…no beef stew with tasteless square of pastry cooked separately! Succulent tender tasty meat in good gravy. Nice selection of dishes, not a burger in sight thankfully. Very popular place.

It’s great to find a traditional country pub serving tasty homemade food & excellent ales. The staff are very warm & welcoming with nothing too much trouble. The surroundings are very comfortable & somewhat quirky. The food was absolutely excellent -proper homemade fayre -the steak pie was enormous & tasty - the liver just melted in your mouth. So nice to see a varied selection of fresh vegetables & creamy mash with a twist too. All served piping hot. Thoroughly recommended.

We are still shocked at the utter rudeness and abrasive manner of the landlady and the complete disinterest by the gentleman behind the bar! We asked if we could move tables as my husband wears hearing aids and the speaker playing music was above the table which would have made hearing almost impossible for him…all of which I explained and apologised for the inconvenience I then heard the landlady comment loudly to another customer about it how we had complained the radio was too loud! Unbelievable and unprofessional I praised the salmon and the reply “yep, yep” was barked back at me! The menu had some unusual elements but sadly despite the wonderful and welcoming waitress it was difficult to relax and enjoy our meal ! Never again! Sadly ….as it could be a marvellous place with more hospitable management!

We went for an afternoon lunch, we booked a month in advance so we could get in there, we had been in before for drinks and experienced a very unwelcoming atmosphere, like people talking your drinks away when your still drinking them and interrupting a conversation. but we wanted to give it another chance, that was a mistake) we walk straight in and were not greeted at all, we had to go and ask, then after sitting on the the table we choose, we where given menu and ask what we wanted to drink , but not listen at all! So we looked at each other and didn’t know what to say, after the so called Waitress came back brought water to us with no glasses, we had to wait for everything as we were not priority, after that the rudeness continued, not waiting for a response to new members of the table order, banning the drinks down, face set with so much anger if we took more the 2 seconds to order. The food in general was terrible and crap quality , but you do not come out to pay for the shockingly rudeness we experienced, I’ve worked in hospitality for many years and if you can’t do it in the right way then don’t do it at all , my advice to waitress/ we will not be returning to that place which is a great shame because it’s a beautiful pub one in which we would have been happy to support, but after the embarrassment and shocking rudeness we will never

Looking at the fancy food photos represented on tripadvisor, I was sure that I had the wrong restaurant. But upon closer inspection, it is the correct one: The Royal Oak Staveley. We booked Sunday Roast here on coronation weekend. When we entered, just few minutes early for our booking, we were left standing there....completely ignored, while the bartender continued a conversation with someone standing near the bar, giving us absolutely no notice. Finally, the owner looked up, I walked forward and told her we had a booking. She took us to our table, telling us it was all ready for us. She did come back later and ask us how everything was, which was great, and we told her so. Our waitress was delightful and quite attentive. We ordered the Sunday Roast. I had the turkey and I must admit that it was the largest meal I've seen! I certainly could not eat it all. Everything was delicious. The pub did fill up as the evening went on so it is in your best interest to book ahead. Just don't expect a warm welcome upon arrival....unless the owner knows you.

This was our second visit to the Royal Oak in recent months. Prior to that we were last there for a wake in 1999! It is very good indeed. Its maybe a bit run down but lets call that atmosphere. fitting with its country location. The service was terrific throughout and the food excellent, The portions are generous, the menu broad enough to provide a choice but compact enough to avoid confusion. Got to say the pie is really rather special, and the crumble, well, little short of spectacular. Heartily recommended ,

At a time when pubs are suffering, you would think that owners might do their best to make customers feel welcome. Not here I am afraid, the guy behind the bar was dressed as though off to the local shoot and gave the impression that he did not want to be there. No 'hello' no are you eating? no nothing at all. A woman appeared lighting the table candles, did she speak? No. It's a fairly miserable place to start with but these two could take a lesson from a young waitress who was quite happy with life. We have eaten here a few years ago and it was fine but I suspect it has changed owners. Those who are incapable of leaving their blessed dog at home whilst they eat will be happy here as they allow dogs into the area where food is served. This place could be so much better were it to be spruced up, the lighting given some attention and most importantly the staff given some tuition in customer service.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch today. The food is always of high quality and delicious. A pub full of character with beer garden. Well recommended.

A pub that’s honestly difficult to fault. Excellent food, especially the steaks and the pie, a good selection of cask beers and a friendly welcome from both landlady and staff. Dog friendly as opposed to dog tolerant. Covid 19 aware. What is there not to...

We were very unimpressed by the welcome. Wasn't busy. No smiles from landlady or bloke behind bar. They need people persons!! Lovely pub but surely a smile doesn't go amiss!!

One of the best fish and chips my mum ever had. Fresh and light batter and good portion size. Warm and welcoming friendly staff.

Good range of dishes from small to large. Panini was very good! Salad served with it. Crisps come with sandwiches too! Very good range of cakes too!

The staff are great. They accommodated our new baby and made sure we had room for the pram. The food is the best quality whenever we come. Every time we come it makes me think why we didn't eat there before this year!.

Popped in whilst looking for a quick lunch. Very unusual setting for a tea room but works well with about 10 tables set up between the pews & the altar. The pews act as an overflow area if all tables are taken but we arrived as one was being vacated. Very friendly staff, a relaxing atmosphere and excellent value for money. Menu is limited to a choice of rolls, soup and a tempting range of homemade cakes & scones. Rolls could have improved if pickle, mustard or mayonnaise had been offered but the cakes & scones made up for this as they were very nice. The church itself is a delightful building and worth a visit in it’s own right. An interesting alternative lunch option.
