Stopped by on off-chance there would be a table for two & were in luck, just two tables left! We opted for the roast & were not disappointed. Three meat options & another dozen or so vegetable choices! The meat melted in the mouth & the vegetables, including the roasters & cauliflower cheese were perfection! The service, despite a full house was first class; attentive, friendly staff!

Lunchtime slot, food was excellent but service was very poor. Gentleman sitting opposite had the same problems too. Waited for desert menus but never arrived. After 25 mins of waiting I went to the bar and collected myself, another 20 mins passed without any communication from waiting staff. Decided to leave and just pay for the food, spoke to a member of the waiting staff to which my first impression was quite shocked, basically she didn’t want to know claiming they were busy and short staffed. Shocking to say the least.

We normally love coming here, always great food and good play area for the kids but the service today was terrible. Sat at our table for 30 minutes before I had to ask a waiter to come over, we went to the bar to get drinks ourselves, three tables came in after us and were served before us, asked for water 3 times before someone finally brought it over. When I complained they didn’t seem too bothered, just that the orders had been put in wrong, no apology. The food is always good here but felt like a canteen today, no effort with customer service at all and it’s not a cheap carvery on a Sunday, just trying to fill as many tables as possible, has put me off returning for some time.

As carveries go, great. As service goes, dreadful. Moved our party of 16 from a generous table at one end of the pub to a table where we were so squashed we could barely lift our cutlery to eat. And we’re pretty used to squashing up in our house. Mopping around us, blowing the candles out on our table, one sour-faced member of staff, all before 9.30pm. I know hospitality has been flat out this month and it’s tough. But…it was quiet. Such a shame for our one and only Christmas party.

I had visited the Royal Oak on two previous occasions with friends. I was very impressed with my experiences. I decided to bring my wife for her to also experience a meal at the Royal Oak. We were both delighted with our meal here. The building and the restaurant itself provide a a clean, pleasing environment in which to dine, The dining area reflects the character and period of the building We opted for the Christmas carvery with a dessert to follow. The Carvery was superb. A choice of meats including Turkey, Beef, Pork and Gammon. We both chose the Turkey and received generous cuts. It was cooked to perfection. There was a choice of twelve vegetables including roasted potatoes, onions and parsnips. Also available was a variety of sauces and condiments to garnish the meal. Everything was delicious, well cooked and hot. For dessert my wife had Christmas Pudding and I had the the chocolate and ginger cheese cake. We were both served generous portions and both were again delicious. We found all of the staff to be very friendly and helpful. We were asked a couple of times if everything was okay and though we chose to leave a gap before having our second course the waiting staff didn't forget us and checked later to see if we were ready for our dessert. The final part, the bill was very reasonable for the quality, and quantity, of the food and drink consumed. For me, it was a birthday meal and our lunch here was the highlight of the day.

Booked for an early Saturday evening meal. The pub was busy and the carvery was very popular with our fellow diners. The service throughout was very prompt and friendly with no gaps at any time. We ordered the fish and chips plus the gammon and eggs. For dessert we had the blonde and ice cream as well as the fruit crumble. Good traditional pub food.

We’ve been coming here for everyone’s birthday now for years. I can’t praise the food enough, and the lovely staff. They are friendly, quick to take your orders, and have always been great at letting us decorate the table and take pictures for us despite being busy. It always makes a lovely visit. The prices are incredibly fair, and the Monday 2 for £20 carvery is a steal. I don’t usually leave reviews, but this place deserves the praise. I’m shocked to see a few negative reviews for them to be honest, in all the years I’ve been going I’ve never once experienced anything of the sort! Thanks Royal Oak, keep up the great work.

6 of us booked here and we're looking forward to it as normally the carvery is good. We booked ahead but when we got there and were shown to our table there was already another family there that had to move which was awkward. We were sat in the lower part and it was so tight people were shimmying passed our chairs holding full dinners and we had no space to move. It was far too cramped and uncomfortable. Food - we queued up and a lot of the meet was the ends. I ended up with just pure cuts of fat off the gammon amongst some of my meat. Our meat was going cold on our plates whilst we stood in the queue waiting to add our vegetables and gravy. Normally all of this tastes lovely but it was poor, not cooked the same and bland. Soggy veg and not a nice taste. Unfortunately we've made the decision all 6 of us, that there are probably better places to go to now where we won't be cramped in like sardines unable to move our elbows and have better quality food.

We were crammed in down the bottom, top apparently fully booked when booking 5 days in advance, service was good, food, below av, chef trying to make ends meet, cutting up the last bit of scrappy meat, daughter chose gammon as the joint was fresh, ended up with all poor quality end and fat, not a good experience and over priced across the board, especially for the quality.

We booked a table as it was a Sunday afternoon. This table (28) was in front of the double doors leading to the patio /outside area. I constantly had staff and various members of the public knocking me as they walked past. The friendly staff tried to rearrange the table, which helped greatly. Some of the staff were clueless as to what was going on in the bar/restaurant...id like to say it was organised chaos...but it wasnt even organised! Young children were allowed to run between tables, screaming and shouting, so if its a nice quiet Sunday lunch you want, you wont find it here. Food was excellent, cooked to perfection but wont be returning.

An excellent pub and so glad it is a long way back to normal and not the “new normal.”We both had the carvery, loved it and would recommend it to everyone. We only have two things which could be improved. Please stop adding spices to the swede, it tastes like cinnamon, and it just doesn’t need it and it makes it taste weird. The other thing is cauliflower cheese. The clues are in the title it’s cauliflower in a cheese sauce not cauliflower in a white roux. If you’re going to cut costs by not including cheese just don’t bother, make it plain cauliflower. We will definitely be back and will always recommend it to anyone who asks but it could just make a few tweaks to make it superb.

Our first visit to the Royal Oak was disappointing. The staff gave the impression that we were inconveniencing them. We had to complete a "legal form" to be able to eat, due to covid obviously. But they already had our address and telephone number. We were hidden away in a cold corner which had damaged chairs and no heating, music or decorations. The staff served us (due to covid) + gave us a good portion of meat + vegetables and the food was actually OK. My daughter hadn't even finished eating + they'd bought the dessert menu over + were taking the order! My husband ordered a dessert which was nothing like he ordered when it arrived + I probably would have had a dessert if I hadn't been so rushed. We then had to ask for the bill. Despite the carvery being edible I shall not give my custom again, where there is so many others to support in the area. Very disappointed when you've spent over £100 for lunch.

Me and a group of my friends visited on the 27th of October. When greeted at the door we was told they couldn’t find our reservation that had been made over there Facebook page. We showed the message and there reply of a confirmation and they made a big fuss and unwillingly found us a table (Strange as the restaurant was basically empty and remained empty the whole time we was was there from 6:30-9). We was placed right by the door in the corner of the room. When the male waiter came to take our order we was given one word answers and rude reply’s. One of us ordered a j20 and lemonade mixed together.. when it arrived by the manager it came as two drinks and had not been mixed, we asked if she could take it back and mix it together in a glass. She literally picked up one of the drinks and poured it into the other glass spilling some on the table and then made a statement of I’ll just leave you this here thus leaving the two drinks there defeating the point that we asked if she could go and take it back and evenly mix it in one glass. Service was really slow and when asking for extra utensils or asking for the dessert menu the waiter would then continue his tasks he was doing then eventually give us what we had asked for 10 minutes later. This happened a handful of times. As someone who works in customer service I was truly shocked. There was no care in anything they did there which is a shame because the food was lovely! Will not be returning.

After arriving we were asked to wait to be seated which took 15 mins- not a good start. After sitting, basically in a corner, it took a further 25 minutes to get a drink and told we could grab food. Seems they forgotten us!When we finally got to grab roast, the chef was lovely and friendly, generous with portions and the food was fantastic for a carvery! Hot, fresh and nice! Some positive on a bleak time so far After finishing, we waited a further 30 minutes to be cleared and to ask for a bill; which was then bought over 15 minutes later. Free coffee was offered but not what we were looking for unfortunately. We struggled to see how the service was so void, they were not busy, probably 15 tables in and it just was a very unnecessary and poor experience. Probably won’t return which is a shame as the food was good.

Very well organised social distance measures inside. We were shown to our table by Daisy, a charming young lady, very personable and efficient. The carvery was excellent, succulent meat, well cooked veg and delicious gravy, so tasty, it was that good. They were continuing the half price offer but I said we would pay full price. Businesses like these have suffered terribly during the lockdown so need all the help they can get to recover. Off on a slight tangent, during the 1930s the landlord had five daughters, all of whom worked at the pub.

Had a lovely meal today. Hubby had steak, fries, onion rings etc and I had the carvery. Both meals were delicious. The staff were lovely and very friendly. We booked for 2.30 but ended up getting lost and returning home phoned to say what had happened and they booked us back in for 3.30 they even kept the carvery open until we got there. We managed to have the lemon meringue pie and ice cream which was delicious. Highly recommend the Royal Oak will definitely be going again.

After lock down this was first time to venture out to eat...taking advantage of government scheme to get restaurants open again ..this is a favourite place for us normally for thier excellent carvery... we booked a table outside....exactly as we arrived on the car park the heavens opened put pay to our alfresco dining.we were greeted by a waitress with a clip board who couldn't find our reservation....not looking for bookings outside...we were shown to a table drinks bought and ordered our meal same time ....nothing came after 15mins but patience .35 mins I questioned another waitress serving drinks....she came back and asked what we had ordered....clearly the check had not entered the kitchen....5 mins later our deep fried cod appeared....and very niceit was too ....a lot of places seem to suffer the same students or 6 formers looking to earn a bit of cash but no interest in the job.....pity ...

Very very disappointed in our first post lockdown visit. Service very very slow even though we had pre booked. They seated our group adjacent to another table when 2 similar size tables were free on the other side of the room so could have had much better social distancing. However the most disturbing thing was when we were being served our carvery there was a member of staff helping themselves without wearing a mask. Will not be going back. Managers comment was they shouldn't have done it but we all decide to take a risk when we socialise!

Booked a table and ate there tonight early.. Won’t go again. Staff wore no masks and came within a metre of us to take our order. Too many staff not knowing what they were doing.. I asked for cold carvery meat and a salad instead of hot vegetables.with new potatoes BUT no onions as can’t digest them. Meal came with so many red onions and coleslaw including onions which I couldn’t eat. I ended up with a plate of lettuce, half a tomato and three slices of cucumber. peppers I can’t eat either, but had t told them that, so my fault. When they collected the plates, or the debris as she called it, I said about the onions and got some comic telling me perhaps I didn’t like the repeats! Her idea of a joke. When the bill came I was charged £3 extra for the new potatoes. Good job my husbands meal was good and we had the 50% off,

My parents and myself had been shielding during the COVID-19 Lockdown and our first meal out was to The Royal Oak. Upon arrival as well as receiving a warm welcome we witnessed all the precautions that had been taken to keep staff and visitors safe. Naturally, it was less busy than in former times, but if anything the system for collecting one's food was more efficient. Diners were sensibly spread out and staff were suitably attentive without overdoing things. The carvery was excellent value, with us all commenting on how much we enjoyed our meal. My mother had a pudding and waxed lyrical about the hazelnut and caramel roulade. All in all it was well worth the wait. I would like to thank all at The Royal Oak who had evidently worked so hard to create a safe yet friendly environment in which to enjoy delicious food. Here's to the next time!

Have been here loads of times before and was really looking forward to returning once they reopened. Unfortunately came away feeling very disappointed. The food is always good - which it was again on this occasion. Carvery has plenty of options and very tasty. The problem is everything else.As you walk in through the door there is a large sign saying "Service with a Smile" - Oh the irony - it couldn't be further from the truth. The staff there have also never been the friendliest or most helpful (even on our other visits) but we have always put it down to it being really busy. On this occasion is was very quiet. None of them really explained the new rules inside the pub. It was quite easy to see to be fair. Every time we asked for anything (drinks, food, desserts, the bill) it was very much like they had no interest in us and didn't really want us there. In fact on some occasions were just plain rude. I know that with the new restrictions things are strange and difficult but still no excuse for poor customer service. We asked what desserts there were and she just grunted and said "Oh I will have to get a menu then" which was literally 2 metres behind her on a table. The bill was not cheap and we felt really fed up when we left. It did feel as though they didn't want us there although I did see they were a little more "sociable" to locals there.
