Booked an evening meal whilst staying in log cabin near by. Large portions of home cooked food, quick service and friendly and helpful staff. Reasonably priced, in fact we were surprised and were expecting to pay more for the quality. The decor is lovely as well, quite cozy on an autumn evening. Will definitely return next time we are in the area

We visited here after a walk on Bromyard Downs. The decor was dated, the whole place looked like it needed a facelift. The food was average and overpriced. Sadly, there are better places to go.

A great pub to finish a walk around the downs with. A wide & varied menu, which amongst the 9 of our party had a wide selection of and all were delicious and generous portions. Alex behind the bar was very welcoming, friendly and hospitable. This is our 2nd visit during each of the last two Feb half terms and won’t hesitate to return 👍

Nice pub, friendly welcome but this is very expensive pub grub that isn’t value for money. Whilst the food is tasty, it’s not cheap for what you get. It’s neither a gastro-pub nor a local - there are better pubs in the vicinity who do the same quality food for 1/3 less. A real pity. We’ll not be back in a hurry and this is our nearest......

Went for the Mothering Sunday lunch in March. Wasn't wowed by the place - although we had parked near the walkway to the entrance with the passenger door closest to the walkway, unfortunately when we came out some one had parked in the space at the bottom of the walkway which made it extremely difficult getting our mother in the car. Realise that this is not the fault of the restuarant, however it would be nice if the parking close to the walkway could be designated for handicapped parking (with or without the blue badge) and the area at the end of the walk way kept clear. Additionally the floors are very uneven with small steps and these can cause trip hazards to the infirm.

We visited The Royal Oak for the first time on a Thursday evening and I was shocked at how quiet it was. Delicious food, excellent service and a pool table! Cheesy garlic bread to start was delicious, I would even say it's the best I've ever had! Followed by ribs, chips and onions rings a good sized portion, I just needed a bigger plate! The gentlemen who served us was very friendly through out! The pool table could do with a refurbishment however it was great to be able to use it. Will be returning and telling friends about our fabulous experience!

Recently called in for a late lunch. Very friendly and pleasant staff greeted us into this spacious yet cosy, olde worlde establishment full of character and charm. Obviously, because of the time, we were able to have had ideal seating in the bay window overlooking extensive lawns and gardens laden with superb floral tubs and baskets. Food was very nice, served up hot and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend and definitely visit again.

An absolute gem of an old English style pub set in the beautiful surrounding of the Bromyard Downs. We were looking forward to this. We both picked from the 'chef specials board' which we expected to be, well .. special. But I'm afraid tasteless packet ham, packet gravy, over-cooked veg and supermarket sausages left us very disappointed. And all at a price you'd expect your average restaurant to charge .. i.e. not cheap. Would it be unreasonable for us to expect the food to match the setting of this lovely pub set in the wonderful Bromyard Downs? Maybe. But for it to only just about match lunchtime grub in a half decent cafe was very disappointing. On the plus side, the staff were friendly and the service was excellent. But this place BADLY needs .. and deserves .. a chef.

If I was rating this pub on setting, charm and friendliness of staff it would be a 5 but unfortunately the food does not match up at all. I had a meal from the specials board. ‘Honey roast ham, egg and chips’ and my partner had the special sausage and mash. Unfortunately out came 2 rolls of packet ham with eggs and frozen chips. No flavour in the ham, was really expecting home cooked. All served on cafe style plates. The sausage and mash was 2 sausages, over cooked veg and bisto gravy. Sorry, but was just not up to what we were expecting from such a charming place. More like bikers cafe food i’m afraid.

I went out for an early evening meal with my wife, we ordered steak as we thought this would be a safe bet for pub food. They did not have any rib eye as advertised so we settled for sirloin. I asked for mine medium which came well done. I sent it back to receive another cooked through steak. The pepper sauce onions and mushrooms were not the best quality. I would avoid which is a shame because it looks nice a nice place on the downs.

Made a special effort to visit here as used to come with our parents as children. Where do we start? The whole experience was beyond awful. A beautiful setting that looks gorgeous from the outside, and if pubic hair in your food, dirty cutlery and filthy toilets are what you're looking for, then this is the place to come. The service took forever and when our food eventually arrived it was poorly presented (who wants pubic hair as a garnish?). We couldn't eat it. We overheard the landlord rudely and aggressively criticizing some other diners who raised issues with their food. We were astonished at the way they were spoken to and as such felt it not worth getting into a row with him; he clearly is not a man that can take criticism constructively & has, we were told, justifiably gained a reputation locally for being obnoxious, as his responses to negative feedback on this site clearly demonstrate. We were absolutely appalled at his manner and the service and wonder how the place manages to stay in business. A disgusting place. A shame; used to be a really nice country pub that our family frequented regularly when we lived locally many years ago.

My wife and I visited the Royal Oak because we had heard it was a beautiful rural pub but when we got there we were utterly disgusted. To start, we were served by a bald man behind the bar, he came across as very bored and not welcoming. Also we heard him telling off the girl behind the bar multiple times which also made us feel uncomfortable, we were very confused by this as we thought her service was excellent. The food was extremely overpriced for what we got, no surprise the place was empty on a Saturday night. All night all we could hear was the beeping of a microwave, which was extremely disappointing as this was correlated with the food. Never coming back, I advice people to stay clear of this nightmare.

We went to The Royal Oak on Tuesday lunchtime. It was a lovely day, and the pub got busy very quickly. It is a beautiful building, gorgeous grounds (with swings and room to kick a ball properly!) and dog friendly floors in the bar area, and water bowls for the dogs in different areas. I ordered from the vegan menu. Sadly, not all the dishes mentioned on the (broken?) website were still available, but there was a choice. Unfortunately I was served the non vegan garlic mushrooms, but they were whipped away and replaced. I admired the guy's honesty, many people would have kept quiet. My chickpea, spinach and sweet potato curry was really tasty, and my companion's burger was apparently very good. I had ordered chips instead of the rice; when it arrived, no chips. I was given a genuine apology and a short while later a huge bowl of chips arrived. It appears there was insufficient staff working for the number of people arriving to eat. I felt for the chap behind the bar, it looked like he was doing everything except cook the food. With no room for pudding, I had a cup of coffee. The vegan option was black, but the coffee was superb. We would definitely return with the dogs. Couple of things: you can get soya milk portions from Amazon, or keep some of the smaller boxes of uht plant milks, little touches like this mean a lot.

We haven't been in the Royal oak on Bromyard downs for a few years,so we decided to give it another go, both my husband and I wanted fish and chips, and we were looking forward to our meal. However when the meal arrived,I could tell immediately that it was frozen fish in batter, the fish was thin, and the batter was rock hard, and at almost £ 11 each for the meals I felt it was very low standards.I asked the landlord if it was frozen and not fresh, he didn't want to answer, but admitted it was and that most of the food is the same, and his words were that you get what you pay for.I told him I don't like frozen or boil in the bag food, he told me he would take it away if I didn't want it, I said "are we to get a refund" he said no.When we finished what we could manage,he had the audacity to ask if we wanted a sweet menue, I said no thank you.As we went to pay at the bar he actually added more on to our bill, charging us almost £6 for a small white wine and soda water. What a waste of hard earned money that meal cost us.We will never go back there, the landlord was more than rude to us.We would have benefitted more by going to the local fish and chip shop, which would have been less than half the price we paid for a meal we did not enjoy. Please take note that this is the royal Oak on the downs and not the one in Broadwas, which incidentally is an excellent place for good food and pleasant service.

Just eaten here for the second time in a few years and remembered immediately why I haven't bothered to eat here more often in the few years I have lived in Bromyard, very average food no better than a 2 for 1 pub in fact I have eaten at better chain pubs, which is fine until you factor in the price nearly £20 for a chewy fatty ribeye is a joke, ridiculous prices for the quality of food, the drinks are also overpriced not home cooked food! If your in Bromyard eat at the queens in the town real home cooked food, or if you fancy something a bit more up market go to live and let live a lovely country pub with real food something I think the Royal Oak is trying to offer but falling short.

We only came here to meet friends on there suggestion and I would not return under any circumstance. Service pleasant enough. Everything about it food wise is wrong though. It's actually quite pricey as well, ingredients and quality of cooking on the plate are none exsistent. Dictionary menu. They should do 5 starters/mains/desserts and try and get them right, and make them interesting. I'm amazed food business like this survive, it's the sort of place you would expect to see on Ramsey's kitchen nightmares.

Have frequented this pub on and off for some years now - have only ever had one meal that was just not as good as usual but have returned since - no problems. We decided to go to the Royal Oak today for lunch!! We have only been there once before, as we have just moved to Bromyard!! Ordered drinks, then lunch!! My husband ordered home cooked ham, egg and chips!! And I had a tuna melt bagutette with chips!! The food arrived and straight away my husband said it clearly states home cooked ham, this is processed ham and very slimy!! He couldn't eat it, so quietly went to the bar and spoke to landlord?? Explained it was awful!! Not what was advertised!! My husband didn't wish to order anything else. And asked for the meal to be taken off the bill. Whilst sat finishing our drinks, there was 4 girls waiting to be served at the bar!! No one was to be seen, because the so called landlord was outside the door smoking, and paying no attention to the waiting customers. When he did finally return and serve them, we then paid our bill and left!! On leaving the premises the landlord?? Opened the side door and said to my husband he didn't appreciate the comments about the food. We explained it was not home cooked ham!! But processed ham!! Clearly false advertising!! Which he agreed abs do would change!! He then continued to say he wasn't happy with what was said. And asked where we were from? Did he work for a food establishment?? And when he replied we live in Bromyard. Basically said we wasn't welcome back!! Which we replied we wouldn't want to!!Never in our life have we been told not to come back to a food establishment for a complaint over the quality of their food!!! Which we were right about I may add!!! As it was false advertising!! I have worked in hospitality for many years and would never EVER speak to a customer the way we were spoke to today!! And I notice from your reviews on here, you did exactly the same to another family!! Absolutely disgusted with your service!! And will be telling anyone I speak to in the area to avoid at all costs!!! Hope you go out of business soon!! As you don't deserve customers!!!

The service was a bit slow but the view distracted us while we waited. The food was very good and the portions were huge - the staff were worried we had a problem with the food as were stuffed and had barely gotten half-way through the mains. The service was a little slow again to see if we wanted desert but maybe that was a cunning ploy to let our dinner go down - we had desert and I am so glad we did. They had a special Banoffee waffle on and it was simply fantastic!

I have frequented the Royal Oak many times over the last 30 years as my mother and friend on every occasion the food and service been the best.. Today however we arrived at noon and ordered three baguettes/baps two arrived the other had in the waitress words had a mishap on the way out fair enough were all human the two meals (filling) that arrived were unusually cool so I discreetly went to the bar and explained which was received apologetically and taken back to kitchen we were then told that the chef was sorry and we could have then re made but would take 1/2 hour or so longer as a pre booked party was in and being cooked at this point I said I would prefer not to have mine as we were only popping in for a quick bite but the already ordered meal which I was assured was being cooked and my mothers food which she would take the cool onions of and just eat we would still have the young lady said ok and took our drink orders .. The owner? Landlord? Came over and stated we would be charged for nothing so we waited and waited and by 130 pm guessed the food would not be out so I decided that as we had two coffees each and had drunk then we would pay I made my way to the bar and asked for the coffee bill from the owner?/landlord who told me my bill cost said thank you once I paid no hint of what was to come. On the way out we asked the young lady who served and took our order about if our food was ever going to come out she replied what food? She stated the order had been cancelled we at this point said ok and just decided to carry on leaving yes a bit out out but walked out to be met by the owner/ landlord running across the car park smiling we thought he was going to apologise for service but instead he said i have only come out to tell you that you will not be invited to come to the Royal Oak again I was so surprised and asked for a reason to which he waved his arms and ran back into the pub. As much as we have previously enjoyed this pub and being ideal for meeting up its a sad day when we are told we are no longer welcome.

very nice place,I think the locals know what’s going on here, food takes forever to arrive, and then it's not right, served bread pudding instead of bread and butter pudding,as the menu, and the steak was terrible, for a country pub not too good.some beers not available

The food was very nice but very overpriced for a basic pub lunch. Whilst waiting at the bar for a drink the manager served a local before he served me which I found quite rude .

Food was of average quality had better and bigger prawn salads. My child's portion was of a good size or thought over priced at £6.25. wife's pie lid was over cooked and could of done with a jug of gravy rather just rely on what's in the pie.

We visited this pub for dinner on a recommendation, and to be fair the staff were very friendly, but the interminable wait for our food to arrive sadly marred the experience. We arrived at 6pm and were the first customers. My main dish was fine, but my Son's chicken nuggets were over cooked and to charge £6.25 for a child's meal which doesn't come with any Vegetable is a bit steep. Then we ordered a single scoop of ice cream for dessert which took over 25 minutes to arrive. Sadly not the best recommendation.

The downs are great for walking the dogs and working "up" an appetite.Sunday Lunch at the oak for a family of 8, age range 7 to 55, was very enjoyable. Our pre booked table in the games area allowed access to the pool table generating great entertainment post meal .The menu and beer selection was good with friendly staff serving the food in good time.

arrived at 2:25, before the close of lunch service. ordered drinks and wanted to order food. the man on the bar clearly didn't want us to order any food. after looking through the menu we decided on simple chips and whitebate to make it easier. the man then proceeded to tell us that the kitchen had been shut down (40 mins early) and to order cold food if we could. I'm sorry but if it says food until 3 then that's what it should be. will not be returning. didn't order food in the end. I would think people would want to be making money and gaining new customers. not turn them away!

The pub was very accommodating. We booked the table and took all the dogs for a glorious walk in the woods and on the Downs. They all had a brilliant time. The hosts welcomed the dogs but we left them in the car. We were able to see them from our table. Our host was so attentive and pleasant. The menu was wide ranging. My husband loved the real ales and the barman was knowledgable. It was necessary to try more than one ale!Our lunches were delicious and we had such a lovely time. Couldn't fault it! The pub is very well presented with lots of olde worlde charm. Ladies cloakroom was spotless and newly decorated. The gardens were immaculate. We'll definitely be back. But for us dog lovers it is a real treat to have hosts who are relaxed about our treasured pets.

Lovely dog friendly pun on a lovely setting on the DownsAll of the food was very good and the veggie burger was excellentThe only minus was our waitress was so apologetic for a few things being off the menu to the point of being patronisingIt's great to have good customer service but this was over the top. A bit like us Brits always saying Thankyou when there's no need

We have not long moved to this area, my wife came across the Royal Oak when driving around to familiarise herself with the surroundings. What a great little find, we went for an early dinner, lovely well kept garden, comfy seating, high standard of customer service and a chef who can cook a steak how you ask for it.For a fairly remote place there was a steady stream of customers coming to eat so I would assume it has a good reputation. We will certainly be returning.Well done to The Royal Oak.

We visited here last evening and were very impressed with the appearance of the grounds when we arrived as they looked very well kept, tidy and clean. However, we were somewhat surprised that there were only another couple of tables occupied in the restaurant. We ordered our meals and were a little disappointed when they arrived, although not sufficiently enough to comment or complain. The haddock we ordered was detailed as 'battered' but appeared more like a very thin frozen breadcrumbed piece of fish. The 'special' sausage dish appeared somewhat stingy as only two very small sausages were served. The three pies looked a little anaemic with very pale unglazed pastry lids although the fillings were apparently fine.A pile of salad had been added to the plates as garnish but looked a little 'thrown on' without much care. Just a little more attention to detail would have made all the difference. The inside of the restaurant looks a little tired with a bit of a furniture miss match going on ie. totally different coloured tables and chairs. On the whole, our experience was ok but with just a little more attention to appearance and detail could be very much improved.

Visited this pub as it looked the business, how wrong can you be.Its not the fact that even if they used the very best ingredients the prices would be on the high side for pub dining, its the plain fact that all the ingredients are of the lowest possible quality.7 of us dined and every meal apart from a bowl of cheesy chips (plenty of cheese)was met with disappointment. The burger was of the quality of a burger van.I know we should have pointed this out but as everything was poor we would have had to settle for 7 portions of cheesy chips.Maybe it was an off day but I suspect it wasn't.

Lovely place food OK when we finally got it. It took half an hour before anyone took our order and an hour for the food to arrive. It appears they were a waitress short. I could understand it if they were a chef short but not a waitress. Although busy it was mid afternoon and not mid day so quieter than I've seen it before. Will try again.

Been here for Sunday lunch a number of times over the years and the whole experience never ceases to amaze me. The food quality is outstanding, staff friendly and efficient and the atmosphere relaxed considering how busy it gets. I`m sure if we lived nearer our visits would increase substantially. Definitely recommended.

We often pop up here for a lunch after a stroll along the beautiful Bromyard Downs, and occasionally an evening meal. My husband says the beer is excellent, and he really should know.. he has drunk enough of the stuff..The food is consistently high quality, home-cooked, homely; not gourmet, just good. The staff are thoughtful and efficient. There is sometimes a bit of a wait for the food, but we are happy to relax and enjoy letting the staff do all the stressing for us. The husband usually has Chilli, whilst I ring the changes a bit. The pie & mash is great, and the fish pie is very hearty too.

Just dropped in on spec for a lunchtime meal. Excellent service, very friendly staff, delicious food and great value. As of October 2024 you'll get a good sized meal for about a tenner. Good choice of ales etc. Location is perfect for visiting the cathedral and city. If you need an EV charger there's one about 100 meters up the road.

Very nice venue in an idyllic bit of Herefordshire, very close to the Wye. The pub opened specially for our group of around 20 (not normally open on winter Tuesdays) and the food was excellent. Alas our hostess Katie had a medical emergency that day and no desserts were on offer, but we will definitely return.
