Good, friendly service and staff. Food very reasonably priced. Delicious large portion of Lasagna and steak done to perfection.

Cracking pub grub. Recommend the garlic bread with cheese as a side…best I’ve had for a long time. Lasagna and salad for main and couldn’t finish it, so full. Great beer garden, not to noisy and a little sun trap ☀️

Let's start with the positives. Three real ales. Well kept. Decent food, but a little dear. Disappointing aspects. Barman devoid of any carisma. I don't think the steak was from Herefordshire, not that it was advertised as such. I would go in again for a pint, so I think you should too.

The food is tasty, with good portions. All pubs should be like.

Great authentic old fashioned British pub. The bar man/waiter was friendly and welcoming, provided advice on our choices. The meals were good quality home cooked food that hit the spot after a long day of sightseeing. We enjoyed the experience so much we went back on another night and enjoyed it just as much the second time.

A great pub, delicious home cooked food, huge lasagne, fab ploughman's. Great choice of ales, great service, large courtyard. Definitely worth a visit.

Awesome pies, and friendly service.

Lovely place to sit outside enjoying the sun, friendly staff, good range of drinks and a variety of food on the menu. We had a cheese ploughman's but was a bit disappointed with what we got for the price - where there was just a couple of very thin slices of cheddar cheese in triangles 😞 there was a little bit of salad, nice big pickled onions, a pot of chutney and warm slices of baguette. The rest of it was tasty just disappointed by the lack of cheese. We have eaten here before with the hot food and have always had lovely food, so won't stop us going again

We visited The Blak Lion for a family wake. Everyone was very friendly and the family felt very welcome. There was a lovely selection of food and plenty of it. One of Hereford's hidden gems. Thank you.

Came here for a wake, never been before. A very old traditional oak beamed pub. Friendly and helpful staff and they put on an excellent spread for all those attending.

Great place for dining out and also lovely staff and very friendly and good beers, great outdoor space to enjoy your meals and beers.

So, can't complain about the beer,food or coffee, but frosty landlady... tried being over polite to her but she was having a serious bad day. I'm sure she didn't mean to be so hostile.. ouch !!

Beef was a letdown,but don't let that put you off ,( hopefully just a poor joint?)Turkey and Lamb were top notch.

Fantastic pub great beer and great food and super value for money. Made very welcome by Pete the landlord and his team had the road in the hole with lashings of gravy at £8.50 it was a steal.

Great food I had fish & chips hubby had gammon both decent size portions & thoroughly enjoyable. Both food & drink reasonably priced. Only complaint is that they stop serving at 7.15 but worth the rush . Will defo go again.

Very good lunch with some of the best chips ever. Excellent pint of draught IPA. Polite and friendly bar staff. Quiet for a Friday lunchtime, but then the whole city was quiet. Must show support for our pubs or we'll lose them!

Drinks to expensive, probably the dearest in town

We enjoyed a lovely lunch on Saturday afternoon. The food was well presented and good value for money. Staff were accommodating and polite. We sat out back on the terrace with gin and tonics and enjoyed the beautiful autumn sunshine. It is a lovely, traditional, black and white pub and it is hard to imagine that you are, in fact, in the middle of town! We will be back next week!

7 Family meeting up for Sunday lunch. Food was excellent, plentiful and great value. All home cooked, no frozen veg here. Super friendly, will definitely come again

Arrived for lunch with my wife and daughter. We were treated to excellent food and service. Friendly landlord, good beer. The Chips are 10/10!

Arrived for booked table at 730 and told to order straight away as stop serving at 730 (but not mentioned when booked). I had gammon and it was lovely, hubby had fish pie and said it was OK. Few people asked for food after 730 and turned away so think they are missing a trick as would have lost business. Sat outside after and finished our drinks which was nice. Reasonably priced though food anyway. Did think wine was a bit expensive but overall it was OK.

Normally the takeaway lunches are very good with decent portions but today a pre ordered takeaway Sunday lunch for 3 people was extremely poor. Not enough of everything with only one yorkshire pudding plus one gravy. I insisted my son and friend have it to share and am now cooking my lunch. Very disappointing as were charged for 3 full price lunches. Made a phone call to them and was told the correct amount was in the bag, obviously it wasn't. Will not bother again.

Brilliant, fantastic, great value for money and they take cash. A keeper you will see you back often.

We came here twice- the food was that good!! The pies, scampi and quiche were delicious and definitely homemade. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The pub is a beautiful old pub.

The food was amazing, the service!? Absolutely shocking, waitress bringing our food over had an attitude like we just shot her dog! The lady behind the bar was great until we wanted to split our bill, and her attitude was just disgusting. We were so shocked because it was so nice there, but not a chance would we go back.

Camping at Hereford Rowing Club we found this pub by chance. They made us so welcome, service was very good and food was excellent. We will certainly return.

I enjoyed the Black Lion as did my family. It's old, quaint with oak beams and lots of history. There is outside seating if that appeals. The food was enjoyable, of good size, well presented and tasty. Staff were very good and food is cooked to order. The beer and cider selection was the only let down being basic. The Black Lion is certainly worth a visit.

Never been before but a real find. Very helpful staff excellent food. My wife couldn’t finish the pie. Could we have some foil to take it home in? No problem a plastic takeaway box provided. Had a look out back - beer garden looks excellent for summer.

One of the better Sunday lunches I have had, nice little pub

Called in for lunch while here visiting friends. Had to have the steak and ale pie as it was homemade, lovely big pie tasted good. Others in our group had burgers and fish fingers, good size portions all arrived together well presented and tasted good. All staff friendly, good select of drinks on offer and some nice real ales, well worth a visit if your in the area nothing not to like.

We popped into this pub this afternoon for a great lunch. The menu is quite diverse as they have daily specials, tapas, regular pub food and also some quirky other things. We had the fish pie and a burger With some adult drinks. The atmosphere inside it was very cozy. I had a nosy about and they have a fantastic beer garden outside. Lots of seating for the summer months. I can’t wait to go back to try some of the other foods on the menu. I would definitely recommend.

Excellent bar with great food. We arrived pretty late after driving around trying to find a good place to eat and have a few drinks. The chef graciously kept the kitchen open for us. The food was amazing. I had the creamy mushrooms for starters and the beef and ale pie for mains. I was stuffed! Excellent service throughout.

Normally you type up something about the food or the service. They were all very good. A pleasant time... Funny thing though about the patrons. My wife and I came in and - mistakenly - thought some patrons were giving up a table. The gent was apparently heading to the toilet, while saying goodbye to a friend. Anyway, my wife sits down at their not empty table. A very nice fella informs my wife that the table is taken (I feel bad I've forgotten the guys name - Tommy, Tony, Johnny....). Anyway, the fella comes back - corrects his friend and invites us to have a seat. We chatted these fellas up while watching soccer, ordered food. It was a great night in England for us.... Cheers, boys....

Met a couple of friends not from the area who had been to this pub before and HE wanted to have the pie again. Enormous pie , enough filling and our joint tapas selection was very tasty and plentiful. We sat outside in the flowery "entrance" and had a very enjoyable meeting. I definitely recommend it for lunch.

Visited Hereford and found this pub near the old Bridge across the river severn. A large pub with much outdoor space. Excellent kept ale and a great choice of food. Friendly staff happy to chat and serve you. The food arrived and what a treat. I had Lancashire sausage mash peas and onion gravy a lovely meal. Well done Black Lion.

Just visiting Hereford for the day and so glad we found The Black Lion for lunch. Not only delicious, but the steal pie was huge. The photo, even though on 2 plates, was a single serving ...... thank goodness for Mannybags as still enough for another meal. The second dish was sausage and Cheddar cheese sandwich.

Excellent service, great selection of Sunday roasts and great beer. I recommend the HPA (Hereford Pale Ale), the lamb shank is a definite must try.

Only ever sat outside at this pub, never had food there so can't comment. Larger was good pint at the 3 times I have been there..

Wow! Very delicious food and great value for money. Meat was really tasty and plenty of vegetables. 4 for us went and we all opted for the small roast, it was almost too much! Would recommend.

Excellent food at very reasonable prices. My wife chose a home made steak and ale pie which was beautifully cooked with a huge portion of steak inside with lovely crisp pastry. I had a lovely omelette with a fresh cold and crispy salad. There was a good range of ciders and beers on draught. It was also particularly clean and the landlord was very pleasant. We would highly recommend this great place in a lovely location.
