Called for Sunday lunch. Starter homemade pate was excellent so thought rest would be as good. Ordered 1 x Salmon fillet whi h my wife enjoyed. I had beef rib with veg and supposedly homemade Yorkshire pudding (Aunt Bessie's are far better!!!!)....Chef needs a lesson in making Yorkshire Puddings. Beef rib came which was 90% fat....a bit of beef with a thick fat centre.. ..inedible . They brought me out after a long wait another piece of beef, equally as bad. The cost for this piece of mainly inedible fat was £19 Ultimately bar redu Ed bill by cost of my main course.

We got caught out with flooding whilst camping in Keswick this month. I jumped on the Britstops site to find somewhere to park the motorhome for the night. So glad I found this place, great atmosphere, good beer and cracking food. We had a lovely evening meal and followed that up with a full breakfast in the morning. They also cater for coeliac and Glen free even at breakfast. I've always passed through Dockray before but I'll pop in to The Royal next time I'm passing. To all the staff at the Royal, keep it up, we loved it and hope to see you again soon.

Very poor service, only one person taking orders and tending the bar, we asked the girl clearing tables and delivering food if she could take our order, got completely blanked. We stay in the Lakes in our caravan just down the road where we stay and have a last evening meal here. On those occasions we always had good service and food, this time food was still good but service was chronic.

Lovely place to stay. We were in the area to climb Helvellyn and wanted to stay relatively locally. The Royal was well priced with a large room and a comfy bed and bath. The food was very good, we had both dinner and breakfast, both were excellent. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming. Only down side was that some parts of the room could do with a little renovating and there is no phone signal at all.

We stayed in a local holiday let in Dockray in June 2023. We ate twice at the pub - both meals were excellent. Friendly service, and food that was presented and tasted beyond our expectations. Would recommend to anyone in the area. Our dog was accommodated really well both inside and outside. Wine and beer selection was good and the portion sizes of the food were very generous.

My husband and I walked here from the camp site at Troutbeck on a Sunday. We had booked a meal and expected Sunday Lunch. No Sunday lunches were on offer - but we were certainly not disappointed with the food that we were served. It was absolutely delicious. I had chicken and mushroom pie, with vegetables and new potatoes. The pie was very tasty, with delicious gravy (extra provided if wanted). It was a generous size and I thought I would struggle to finish it - but as it was one of the best pies I have tasted, I did manage to eat it all. And I am pretty fussy about pies! Great pastry - short crust - and a full pie, not just a topping. My husband also enjoyed his beef stew and potatoes. The vegetables were fresh and well cooked. All food is cooked on the premises. Washed down with a pint of lager and a pint of beer, it couldn't have been bettered. And we also shared a pavlova - delicious. Well, of course! Thank you very much to the staff involved in preparing and serving such lovely food. Highly recommended on the basis of what we ate.

we booked at the Dockray after walking past it on the Aira Force walk. It looked good so we looked online for the menu which was varied. I e-mailed the owner to make a booking and he got back immediately, a good start. We ordered lamb shank, burger, curry and scampi. All mains were good sized portions served quickly but all freshly cooked. The owner was friendly, drinks also served quickly. We couldn't fault anything. The decor was nice, unspoilt country pub.

We had dinner here when staying in a holiday cottage locally recently. We enjoyed all our meals. Mum had the rabbit casserole and enjoyed trying something different, although she found it a bit too salty (and she uses a lot of salt and didn't add any!). Sister in law and my husband both had the lamb shank and loved it. I had fish and chips which was fine. We also shared a couple of desserts. Prices were reasonable inn the current climate.

Whereas many local pubs have just one vegetarian choice, the Royal at Dockray has five, meaning that even during a 3-night stay locally I was able to make a positive choice every evening. Food was prepared quickly, was tasty and portions were generous. Those who eat meat and/or fish are of course more than adequately catered for as well.

Where do I start, our visit to the Royal Hotel was perfect and I would love to go again. We wer greeted with a lovely Scottish lady who was our host for the entire stay witch gave the whole experience a very comfortable feel. The settings and views wer stunning, the decor of the restaurant and rooms wer lovely and there dog friendly! We came totally last minute as wer planning on driving home after our walk, because of this we didn't have any dog food and the chef very kindly prepared a dinner and breakfast for my pooch, made from a mix of roasted vegetables and meats! It was made with love and we just felt like we wer family to the whole place. The food was equisit, I'm a chef and it often upsets me when you eat places that clearly have been put together without thought or care. From starters to mains and then to breakfast in the morning everything was cooked to perfection, packed with flavour and presented with love. A huge thankyou to the staff for making us feel very special, it was such a treat!

Our friend had booked a table for 16 of us, and the hotel assured him that it would not be a problem. We all pre-ordered our meals. Ordering drinks was an experience! The barman seemed to totally misunderstand orders, eg one lady asked for a lime & soda and ended up with a pint of cider; I asked for lemon with my gin & tonic and he nearly put lemonade in my drink instead of a slice of lemon! Then we were hurried through to our table, Despite pre-ordering our food, the starters arrived in dribs & drabs. Then, 2 main courses arrived despite the table not being cleared of the starter plates - and these 2 people ended up eating their mains on their own as the rest of the meals didn't arrive until approx 15 minutes later! Then 3 meals had to be sent back as part of the food was stone cold. When we all eventually received our main courses, the food was good. 4 people ordered desserts and these were very good and huge! When the manager was asked why 2 people had received their mains so far in advance of everyone else, he stated they were meant for 2 other customers who did not want them until a little later, and so he brought them to our table!! The service was truly shocking - the waiter was obviously very inexperienced and didn't have a clue when any question was asked about whether meals were gluten-free, what tea they offered, etc, etc. We will not be returning.

I currently am here in Glenridding for my cousin's wedding. I had booked last minute therefore the only hotel available was Royal Hotel. The pictures looked good and the reviews weren't bad. I checked in with my boyfriend last night (July 2nd 2019) and we were meant to stay for 2 nights. We cancelled our booking today and we will stay somewhere else. The place is TERRIBLE. Awful. Dirty, unkept. I couldn't sleep because I was so uncomfortable knowing that the place I was sleeping in was dirty. Please please please DO NOT listen to the other positive reviews because that is what I did and I am utterly disgusted at the idea that I stayed there even for one hour. I feel like I need a disinfectant shower. ROYAL HOTEL place needs a serious clean and makeover. Also, how can the reception of a hotel be closed before 10pm and not open at 6 am!? Complete nonsense.

There are so many fantastic pubs in the Lake District that do great food but this is not one of them. I had a burger that tasted and smelt like it had gone off or not been properly cooked or defrosted. It came with about 7 chips, onion rings (these were good) and a side salad. The side salad was well past its best and was wilted and dry. Someone had tried to spruce it up by putting a squirt of salad cream on top and some random tinned pineapple chunks. The burger cost about £13 which is a rip off compared to other good local pubs. My friend had an equally disappointing meal. We left large amounts of the food but no one serving thought to ask if there was a problem.

Visited for breakfast as it was included as part of our stay down the road. Immediately we were off to a bad start when we got huffed at by the waitress because she walked into me. When we sat down we saw the flies... there were hundreds of them. Most of them dead and hanging from fly catchers above our heads in the restaurant and above the buffet table. They were also covering all of the sides next to the tables. When we got our food, it was doused in grease and my partner found a hair in his. Needless to say we did not stay for very long and will not be back! I understand it’s very hot but there is no need for this excess of flies especially in a dining establishment! Heading back to Glenridding where we will willingly pay for better food rather than suffer this freebie.

We stayed here for a night, booking both an evening meal and breakfast the following morning. Situated in a beautiful quiet area just off the shore of Ullswater, with a lovely beer garden, it suited our needs perfectly after a long days walk. Unfortunately the interior of the hotel did not match the exterior. You pretty much know what most Lakes Hotels in this range are going to be like, especially the ones welcoming walkers and dog owners, but this was looking really quiet tired. The bar area wasn't too bad, with a decent selection of real ales available. The room itself was a bit dirty in the corners, but sheets were clean and the bed was comfortable. Decent sized bathroom too. We were a bit worried about the evening meal before we even ordered, as a member of staff had told us the head chef was off that day, and we were right to be worried as the meals were well below average. I had Pork shoulder with caramelised apple which was very un-caramelised, in fact the apple was almost raw. Wife had the Lamb shank which was ok.The pudding I ordered was off and had to be returned to the kitchen, and I declined to order another instead. There was also loads of flies knocking about which was really off putting whilst you are trying to eat. A fly zapper might be a good suggestion? Breakfast was better, no real complaints there, and the staff were lovely and friendly. It wasn't so bad as to ruin the trip, but I would not go back again.

We stayed the night here whilst on our way back from Scotland. We were greeted by a young guy at the bar who found our room booking and showed us to our room, must say he was very helpful and informative. Our room was compact but had everything you needed for the night, large comfy bed, tea & coffee facility, bathroom with a very good shower. We went for a quick walk to stretch our legs and headed back for some dinner. We had the ribs and a burger. Which were both fine, but would not set the world on fire.Unfortunately at 3am a rather drunk couple decided to have a row which woke most of the hotel up. This is obviously no fault of the hotel and they did apologise for any disturbance when we checked out, but it may have been better if they had a night manager (they might have had one?) who could've possibly defused such a situation.

Visited with my lad today after an unsuccessful fishing trip to Rookin Farm. Lunch menu only and swerved the Curried Parsnip soup but was delighted with the sandwiches and chips. Steak and onion gravy for me and he said the curry chicken mayo was one of the best he'd ever had! Will definitely pop back on our next visit

Lovely hotel, they couldn't do enough for us , we traveled to the lake district for our sons wedding , family of 15, we had never been there and it was a fantastic experience. The food was excellent, it catered for food allergies , the rooms where lovely , clean sheet and towels and the beds where very comfortable

Sehr hundefreundlich. Uriges Ambiente.

We've eaten here before but the Royal is now better than ever, with the interior further improved (including some great small metal sculptures of human figures on show), a good range of local ales, and an excellent menu. We had 3 vegetarians amongst the nine of us in the party and it's always a treat to see 5 veggie options - including battered halloumi and chips, a great falafel burger option, wild mushroom risotto and more. Plenty for the omnivores/carnivores too. The pub has a warm and friendly atmosphere (no wonder the Patterdale Mountain Rescue team get together here more weekends) and all in all it's a great place to come. Warmly recommended.

Popped in here on way to have a walk round Aire Force waterfalls. Fund it very unwelcoming, staff slow and prices high. Was nearly 5 o'clock and would have been looking for a place to eat but decided to to come back.

We parked the car and I thought the outside area looked lovely, nice gravel and pretty flower displays, hanging baskets and troughs etc. As we had driven a ways to get here we went straight to the toilets. Well, dismal and in dire need of a makeover is an understatement! Anyway, despite not having any Prosecco by the glass, we ordered drinks and were taken to our table. In the right hand corner at the back I listened to the awful music coming out of the speaker into my ear and I had a view of the fly paper inside by the patio door with at least half a dozen dead flies on it. Luckily my husband is amazing and swapped places with me. Trying not to be a snob I really hoped the food would be great. Our starter of goats cheese bruschetta was lovely, it needed olive oil as it was a bit dry but the goats cheese was delicious. Sadly there was no waiter to be seen to ask for some olive oil! Paper serviettes and various cutlery was dumped on the table for us to sort by a man in tatty track suit shorts. No sooner had they cleared the plate than our main course arrived. We had lamb shank and falafel burger which was okay. We didn't stay to have any puddings as the waitress was starting to lay the tables for breakfast - despite only being 8.15pm. With the tat around the walls the decor was very tired and in dire need of a makeover. Even white walls and a neutral carpet would be a huge improvement, it could be a goldmine here. Sadly we won't be back.

eight of us went for our monthly meal. Lovely summer evening and loads of people sitting drinking in the garden when we arrived. most of our group opted for the starter smoked chicken with a mango salad with a portion of chips and one went for the fish and chips which left us room for a sweet.we all enjoyed the firt course then the sweet few of us went for the royal pavlova which thankfully was a chewy massive merangue filled with cream and berries. I hate the soft pavlovas so really enjoyed. the others had sticky toffee pudding. waitress was helpful and friendly. a man cleared the table in t-shirt and tracky bottoms which we thought was a bit scruffy for a dining room. we all enjoyed our meal and roll on next month to try another of our local eatieries.

Given the range of options available around the area, we chose this mostly on proximity to where we were staying. The reviews are right, though, and the food was pretty average. Two of us had the lamb shank and both agreed it wasn't bad but not nearly as good as we'd had elsewhere. Overall disappointing, but ok if staying nearby. Not worth a longer drive, though.

The menu is wide and offers everything you would expect from such an establishment. I chose fish and chips which I found to be quite substantial and well presented. Despite being a weeknight in a remote rural location it was quite busy which I think indicates the quality of the place.

Very average food. So-so ambience inside. Staff are ok. Beer garden is good and large. I don't think the food is worth what they charge so would not eat there again. I've had better at some pretty downmarket chain pubs despite it looking homemade I'm sorry to say There are much better places nearby.

M.a.w. Royal Hotel is eerder een B&B met bijhorende leuke pub met jammer genoeg verschrikkelijke bediening.

Stopped here for lunch after walking from the bottom of Aira Force. Nice food, friendly service and plenty of space to sit outside on a sunny day. No doubt we'll be back!

Caught the bus from Patterdale to Aira Force, then walked up to Dockray and called in for a bar meal. Unfortunately no bar meals available for an hour as they had a party in.Very disappointing and a hungry walk over Great Dodd to Glenridding. Was our wedding anniversary so wife was not impressed.Couldn't even just fit us in. Not prepared to sit drinking soft drinks for an hour as we had 4 children with us.

Decent food in a great location. We found the food to be nice but we thought it was a little over priced. Venison chilli was a disappointment, fish and chips were as fresh as you can get.

We had a great overnight stay with my family (husband and daughter) and my parents. We used Groupon vouchers and my mum still can't believe how good value it was and thinks that they made a mistake. The rooms are modern with tv and radio and the bathrooms were light and clean. We had a bath and a shower in room 6. Even the window boxes had beautiful real flowers, framing the beautiful scenic views as you looked out. We ate in the pub below in the evening and found the food to be good pub food. They have 'little bites' which are very generous portions and the little bite fish and chips is plenty and good value. They also have a good selection of local real ales and homemade cakes. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to be back very soon. It is a perfect location for the Aira Force 2.5km walk along the river to the waterfall. Very manageable for my 5 year old.

Great beer, brilliant customer service and superb food. Simply cannot fault this place! Definitely not to be missed if you're doing a hike from Aira Force falls. The bar staff were very accommodating and let us 'dry off' next to a toasty fire whilst we drank our beers.

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.
