Do Not Go Here!! Bought 3 beers which were very overpriced and was charged for 4. Ordered the ‘Mushroom and Stilton’ which was disgusting. Bathroom had no soap, hand dryer not working at all and no paper towel. So if you want to be overcharged for a very sub standard meal, this is the place to come. A shame as it has a lovely view…

Staying in Runswick for the weekend. Been to the Royal loads of times over the years. Friday night was great. Service very good and food great. Really enjoyed it, left us looking forward to another good night. Left a good tip, it was worth it. Sat night, service none existent (different staff) other than to conclude the best description would be it was rude. Only wanted a drink and desert but was refused with no explanation. Pretty poor. Seems to be run by younger staff with little training or a little knowledge of how to serve. So based on this weekend it could only be described as hit and miss. Based on Friday nights experience we will no doubt try again another time in the hope the owners make some basic improvements.

Hi today i’m gonna be complaining about a lad who works he had brown hair with glasses looked like early 20s/late teens. The food was amazing don’t get me wrong i really like the chips there but that doesn’t add up for the service there the boy i described at the top came up to my table and i wasn’t finished with my food he started to nimble on my chips and said what are you doing then out of no where he threatened me he said “come out side if you wanna shout i’ll show you something then pulls up his shirt and i see a knife handle on his waist band” i got scared so i will not be returning to this place i personally think he should get fired Thank you x

The food was absolutely fantastic and the location was absolutely beautiful however not too happy about some of the workers there. This one youngling wearing glasses going by the name Alfie was extremely rude and was caught picking at my sons chips and kept dribbling over my drink. It’s just not on. There was also a gentlemen at the table across from me flirting with a waitress and slobering down brownies what I found pretty disgusting.

My husband ordered the gammon and I ordered the prawn salad, it came after a 40 minute wait. The pub was empty so why it took so long is beyond me. My husband's gammon was inedible, it would have been easier eating shoe leather. My prawns were tinged with blue? I have been in the food industry for over 40 year's and have never come across anything like it. I would be ashamed to put my name to those two dishes

Arrived 1325hrs, i.e. late-ish lunch. Waited 20 mins to order all that was on offer - a takeaway. We were advised a long wait (30 mins) as there was only one staff member in the kitchen. Whilst waiting for the takeaway a table became available outside that we occupied. Very pleasant staff member doing table service for drinks whilst we waited .. and waited ... and waited ... until 1515hrs, when we cancelled our food order and left. No apology from staff member with regard to the long wait for food. I did wonder why a member of waiting staff couldn’t assist the lone chef, rather than taking an unrealistic amount of food orders. Shame really as it’s a lovely location and the staff member that served us outside was very pleasant and attentive.

I've eaten here twice. The 2nd time, after 2 years, I had forgotten how slow the service was and made the mistake of booking it again. It is the only place to stop off if you're walking the coast between Staithes and Sandsend and hence has something of a monopoly. We arrived early and waited til 1.45 which was our booking time. We ordered quickly. It was over an hour before any food arrived. The food was OK - nothing special and nothing that should have taken so long to prepare. An awful lot of dogs in the eating area. Outside loos quite dingy, though clean. It is the waiting time which is the killer - and we were not the exception.

3 stars is possibly generous. Having made a couple of visits, the first being quite positive, the second was average at best. Booked in at 18:30 and ordered food by 18:40 it was nearly 19:30 before food arrived. Very slow. The food was, however, lovely.Desserts were relatively quick to arrive but 3 of 4 came together and the 4th a good few minutes behind (so much so that 2 of the 4 had finished by the time the 4th came).Final nail in the coffin was that they’d run out of brandy “a few nights ago”. Genuinely struggle to believe any pub would run out of brandy (or most other common drinks) but for that to have been a few days ago is very very poor and demonstrates poor management. Nice pub overall, with lovely friendly polite staff but lacks attention to detail and probably only survives due to the transient nature of visiting guests who don’t know better. I’d have to carefully consider a further visit.

Perspex screens separated the indoor tables in the bar and the staff were quick to remind customers without masks or wandering around the bar. We visited for lunch and chose paninis for £6.95 each. Our waitress was unhelpful, never offered us a menu and knew little about the food or drink on offer. We chose from the chalk board, unaware that full menus were available. Our paninis arrived after a 40 minute wait and were rather overdone but came with nice chips and a simple salad garnish.

We absolutely love this little pub. We've never had a bad experience here. The staff are always so friendly and chatty, the food is lovely and there's a decent selection of beer and wines. It's goes without saying that, rain or shine, the view is breathtaking beautiful and one we never get bored of looking at.If I had one criticism, it would be that not enough attention is paid to cleanliness. The general hygiene is very good, but little things like dirty windows and cobwebs in the window frames with lots of dead flies just let the place down slightly, which is why, for us, it's a 4 star review rather than 5.Overall, it's a great place and one we'll return to again and again.

This could be a charming little place to visit. It has a great position overlooking Runswick Bay. However, it is lacklustre and without personality. The red wine served here is very poor. A large glass of this cheap plonk with half of lime and soda comes in at £8:50! To be fair we did not eat here although we were earlier advised to choose The Runswick Hotel or Badger hounds as preferred choices. When we arrived one of the staff placed a chalk board on the walkway, which blew over with the breeze. It was still there on it's back when we left with customers having to walk around it.Runswick Bay is a highly rated place to visit and stay. The Royal should have no shortage of paying customers and need to focus on upping their game. Maybe the guarantee of regular visitors have made them take things for granted? The local tourist board should step in to give them a friendly nudge!

This place has so much potential with maybe the best view of any beer garden in the Uk but the outside furniture desperately needs an upgrade and outdoor heaters haven’t worked for years by the look of it. Our visit to the royal started off ok, with a very friendly barmaid and a good pint, however that's where it ended! After waiting for a good 45 mins for our food (no one else was waiting at this point) I was given new potatoes instead of mash that I had ordered and if my steak and stilton pie actually had any stilton in it I will eat my hat. Whilst eating my "meal" a woman came in with a border terrier and started to stoke the fire up,collect glasses etc and let her dog pee up the wall.....thinking she might have been the landlady I decided not to say anything at that time.In the meantime there was a couple of families opposite us who's kids I have to say had been exceptionally behaved whilst they waited for there food! There food started to arrive and 1 of the boys decide he wanted the loo and whilst walking through the bar was bitten by the border terrier!! The dog owner blamed the boy for "running about"....he was NOT running about at all!!I'm assuming this woman is maybe not the landlady( i hope anyway) but probably a local who did not ask if the boy was ok, decided not to leave the pub and carried on drinking her gin like nothing had happened!! The families were quite obviously upset and so they should be. 'Disappointing' is not even near enough!!

Popped into The Royal Hotel after a five mile walk from Staithes. First impression was that this was a pleasant little bar with a nice ambiance. However, really disappointed to find that that the only ales on sale were either a blond or light IPA (and with no bottled beer options available either). Had no choice but to opt for a drink I didn’t particularly want. Decided to get some nachos but unfortunately these weren’t the best (lumpy, dry chilli and cheese that had been properly melted). Wouldn’t make an effort to return Runswick Bay and most likely would go elsewhere for a beer if we did.

Nipped in here after a walk in horrid rain along the coastal path one lunchtime, real fire was going but the pub was barely warm enough and we could feel no other heat source. The outside of the pub building was very sparce of signage which was unusual, quite nice interior although the porch area is bland. Lunchtime food arrived and it was very average, a single spoon of very very mild chilli on a jacket potato and colslaw in a small paper pot that had been in there too long as the pot was soggy, the other meal was slightly better. Portion size average, maybe the evening meals are of a better standard.Great views from this pub whether inside or out - the room at the rear of the pub {not used at lunchtime} looked quite interesting and cosy.

Called in on a sunny September weekday for lunch. We got the last table, which was near the bar. After taking our order, all subsequent customers were advised there would be about a 40 minute wait. One man asked if there was any food which wouldn’t mean a long wait, to which the very abrupt response was ‘crisps or chocolate’. The attitude of the staff created a bad impression and atmosphere in the pub, which is a shame because the food was fine when it did arrive and it’s in a lovely spot. A few improvements in customer service would go a long way to improving this place, not that they seem bothered as they have plenty of customers regardless.

This is the second time my family have eaten at this place and both times the poor food quality does not reflect the high prices. The cod and chips at £12.95 was tiny, thin over cooked and bone dry.The side salad was gritty and clearly never been washed. This was the same standard for all my family and the the child's fish goujons was bone dry too. The girl behind bar had no customer service skills at all, she would dissappear for long periods leaving customers waiting, there was only 7 customer in the bar eating, the food was terrible, the whole atmosphere in the place was not good, won't be visiting again, feel sorry for owners if they don't know what it's like, it could be a very nice unique place with some careful attention to its faults,

Nice little pub very carefully hidden away you wouldn't know it's there as there isn't a sign like you can see on the photo. Roaring fire, friendly staff and great food you never want to leave. Shame toilets are outside.

Visited this venue on several occasions and always enjoyed an excellent and tasty gammon lunch. Took friends for lunch today, boasting they would enjoy the best gammon lunch ever, new owner, poor choice menu which did not include gammon, had to settle for fish, chips and mushy peas which turned out to be a very poor choice and well overpriced at £12.95! Such a shame as the place enjoys lovely views of Runswick Bay. Can no longer recommend the Royal.

Went on easter Sunday Brunswick bay is beautiful however considering it's the only bar in the bay, it's scruffy outraged the toilets where disgusting and the meal atrocious! Old oil used, met a local who thinks a big overhaul is due, can't agree more. It's in a lovely place would have thought they would have made it look better! Beers ok!!

After a long, hard walk along the coast from Port Mulgrave, we stopped here for some food before continuing. The food wasn't anything special but was good and needed after the walk we had. The staff were friendly and there were no concerns with us stopping for food even though we were soaked wet through and covered in mud and sand.

Lovely hotel although a little dated. Unfortunately check in staff not as friendly as you would expect. Rooms good size and cleaned daily. Food good can upgrade to alacarte but very limited. Wonderful views from sea view rooms

We were walking along the coast and it was great to stop for a beer at this friendly pub. Whilst there was a roaring fire inside, we and most other customers were out on benches in the sunshine, in mid February

After walking around the winding streets of Runswick Bay we called in this pub for a coffee. It seemed to be the only place open on an out of season Monday. This is a traditional style pub, a bit upmarket. The coffee was good. Some other customers were having food, which looked appetising. The toilets are across a yard, quite small, would be difficult for anyone on the large side! On a summer evening the outside seating would be an ideal place to relax.

Came to the Royal for 2 nights while staying in Runswick Bay. Great selection of gin! Friendly staff. Nice atmosphere with open fire blazing away. Scampi and chips were delicious and much needed after a 15 mile run! Would definitely return.

Used to go in this pub when I was younger and it's a shame that Humphrey Smiths rules have crushed his business as it used to be a cracking pub but now it seems to be a pipe dream of a sad old man who
