I never write a poor review as I fully understand the demands on business today but please don’t take the paying public for granted. The standard and presentation of your ( cheese and crackers) was a joke - 3 small damaged crackers and a minuscule 1 portion of cheese. £4.50

Lovely pub. It was funny because as we came in the locals said 'must be the weekend'. We didn't mind as we are quite local anyhow. Had some good ales and cider on tap. Pub is a bit out of the way and parking a bit limited, but we'll worth the visit. Will go again

Clearly Matt is truly passionate about the quality of food and drink he serves. He apparently has a wealth of experience in high end restaurants and it shows in his knowledge of the food and drink he serves. He sources from local high class local farms and his wife Yvonne cooks your choice to absolute perfection.. Matt is constantly 'eyes on', aware of everything on every table, you don't wait a minute to be seen and served.. He replaced a pint of beer he must have thought was not up to his standard before my husband had even said he wasn't happy with it, but in such a discreet manner, you'd hardly see the switch..No fuss. We ordered the Cote de Boeuf, took his advice as to how it should be served and accompaniments and it was the most amazing tasting, tenderest steak I've ever tasted (and my father was a master butcher)! We spent 10 days in the Cotswold and ate out every day/evening, choosing by reviews by several respectable guides and the internet of course, and this was by far our best meal. Thank you. PS, FYI - I have no previous knowledge of them or bias, just a true review of our meal.

Lovely cross country walk from Burford to The Rose & Crown for lunch with friends. Could not fault the service, ambience or quality of food. Beef for two people was perfectly cooked (I prefer mine on the rare side) and the accompanying sides were faultless and generous. Good beers and reasonably priced wine completed this excellent lunch. Thoroughly recommend but good idea to book first.

This is without a doubt the best pub restaurant in the Burford vicinity. Exceptional food and a manager / owner whose passion is contagious and who comes from decades of experience in brand name restaurants in London. Constantly changing menu with some staples that remain (tempura prawns!), very cosy, beautiful yet not overdone interior. It’s a pleasure every time. (In case you are wondering, read my other reviews, I am not easy to please.)

This is a beautiful, traditional, pub - not very big, but that makes it even more charming, as there is no room for any fuss - no games machines, etc - just full of old Cotswold character. All the meals we've had there have been of exceptional quality in both the products used and the cooking. During the winter has gorgeous wood burning stove which adds even more charm on cold winter afternoons/evenings. During the better weather has a lovely garden area.

I'm in two minds whether to post this review or not. Here's why. The typical country pub around here does a Sunday Roast. Usually big on portions and sometimes low on interest. Which is why we tend to avoid lunching in a pub on Sunday. The Rose and Crown is resolutely different. And wonderfully so. A massive BBQ out back earns its keep. The pub is already clearly very popular (the place was rammed). I'm reluctant to make it harder for us to book a table in the future. But in the interests of good citizenship... The menu is small - only a few choices. Well chosen choices. So well chosen that I would have happily ordered any of the dishes on it. I tried most of them and they were either brilliant or very brilliant. On a hot summer's day a chilled glass of gazpacho garnished with an emerald green granita of basil, a few flakes of almond and some sourdough (essential to mop up the last few drops of gazpacho) is genius. And that's about the frilliest dish. Everything is very simple - a plate with two fillets of mackerel. A bowl of salad. Some chips if you want. Some prawns in the lightest of tempura batters and a little freshly made chilli sauce. A perfectly cooked mixed grill - straight off the grill - seasoned with its own juices. This is culinary confidence rarely encountered in English establishments. But is only part of the charm of the pub. The rooms and furnishings are equally simple - and somehow their acoustic means you can actually have a conversation with your own table rather than being drowned out by the table behind. But the crowning glory are the staff. How they manage to keep an eye on that many covers I don't know. How they manage to be present when you want them and absent when not required I don't know. How they have time to chat about the food and their plans for the pub whilst still keeping every table ordered, topped up, served and billed I don't know. What I do know is that the Rose and Crown took a celebratory family lunch into an unexpected stratosphere of pleasures. In the words of the venerable guidebook - "worth a deviation". And a word of warning - the pub is so successful that the menu may change two or three times during service. So go with an open mind. You are unlikely to be disappointed.

Stopped in for lunch with the dog on a Saturday afternoon. The surrounding village is wonderfully charming. The pub is beautifully maintained - simple, sensitive interventions that let the old stone building speak for itself. A seat right by the open fire was perfect on a damp day. Service was attentive and the menu and beers/ciders on tap were spot on. Food was deliciously executed - like the decor, simple and accomplished without fuss. Mains were game and fish pie, and two crumbles for pudding. In the perpetual hunt for the perfect pub, this is a strong contender. Long may it remain so, we hope to return.

It's been a while since I've been out for Sunday lunch, and I was a little hesitant about returning to the Rose & Crown because it had been so good the last time I'd been, before the first lockdown. I needn't have worried because it was excellent. Great food, well cooked, lovely intimate dining area with wonderfully friendly and attentive hosts. Roast beef cooked to perfection with all the trimmings and the best bread and butter pudding ever. It was also lovely not to get 'encouraged' to leave straight after the meal. I was so impressed by this small pub, the food was divine and the atmosphere welcoming and warm. My partner and I had Sunday lunch in this old pub and the food reminded me of home cooked food. The staff were lovely and friendly, the chef even waited on our table. The beef and lamb were to die for and just the right amount of food. We had two main meals, two puddings and a couple glasses of wine which amounted to around £80. I wouldn't hesitate to go back for another meal.

The lunch for 4 comprised 3 mains, 2 starters a pud, 3 coffees and 2 drinks. Priced at £80 it was middling expensive but good quality, served fresh and hot. The staff were professional, attentive and knowledgeable. The portions were modest - any smaller and they would have been mean but probably just big enough. My only real criticism is the bar phone which rings frequently, is loud and piercing - quite an irritation after the 5th time it happens. Overall however the meal was a very positive experience; we would certainly recommend and go there again ourselves.

The atmosphere was nil , we entered the pub was seated in an area where the banging down and moving of tables became so noisy we nearly got up and left (I wish we had). The starter was okay but as it took no prep you couldn’t go wrong. The tables were sticky when you put your arms on them you were glued. The toilets were disgusting men and ladies , men’s were outside and stunk, ladies were inside and had more bacteria than a 24 month piece of meat. The main was basic, we had beef that was thinner than you would put in a sandwich the choice of veg was none , cauliflower and cabbage nothing else . We asked for extra gravy to which the supposed chef ( owner )replied this takes3 days to make its at a premium. The place was uneventful, overpriced, dirty and if it wasn’t for the website ( which made it look lovely) and the lack of proper eating houses it would close.

Was visiting the Cotswolds as a solo lady traveller and although staying in Burford, decided to get out-of-town to a little-known backwater, Shilton, on the Carterton Road out of Burford. Had already sampled the Gin & tonic selection at lunchtime and enjoyed sitting in the garden in the sun, so requested a table for 1 that night. Was no problem and felt totally at ease reading my hook & watching the world go by while awaiting my dinner. Braised lamb shoulder which was absolutely delicious with mash & seasonal veggies. Almost licked the plate, it was so well cooked and served.

I booked a table for our wedding anniversary, while staying at Burford Caravan Club Site. We obviously had no idea of the pub's reputation or the outstanding food we would enjoy. It's a small, stone-built pub that I can only assume was once a cottage. The staff were friendly, obliging and extremely hard working as they bustled around between the tables (at one point every table was taken and everybody was ordering food). The food was outstanding; can honestly say we've not experienced food that excellent in quality and flavour for a very long time. The pressed lamb shoulder was so succulent and the roasted carrots so sweet and flavourful. My husband began with a wonderful flat iron steak and was so impressed he moved on to a second course of steak and ale pie, which was equally delicious. Three desserts later we'd booked again for our last evening before returning home!!

After a long wait to finally reunite with my family this was the chosen pub which sadly disappointed.Food was average, staff’s attitude was disappointing and disinterested. For a small pub/restaurant I feel there is no excuse for a poor service, if your from outside the village your a clearly made to feel your an outsider. For a family of 5 we each ordered a meal which all quotes “comes with a side of vegetables” we had to share 2 small dishes between 5 adults, when we asked the waitress if there was more veg on the way she said “that’s all you get” which was blunt to say the least. I had the pie which was dry and when asked for gravy I was told “there is gravy in your pie” which I feel is not a good enough response and gravy should of been offered. The chips were definitely not home made and you can tell they were cooked from frozen, overall for the price of the meal and the location my standards were high and sadly this restaurant did not meet mine or my families expectations. I will not be returning or recommending this place, I suggest to anyone reading this please drive 5 minutes to Burford you will not be disappointed.

Booked in advance as we were a party of 6, the front of house was great, doing everything they could to overcome a minor problem of no chicken for the chicken ceasar! Each dish was lovely but the star of the main courses was the steak pie, rich and tasty under crispy pastry. We were given time to chat but the service was attentive and very friendly. Desserts were offered and the choice was extensive. All desserts were exceptional but the bread and butter pudding was the best anyone had tasted, plenty of delicious creamy sauce with fluffy bread under crispy top. The summer pudding was tangy and refreshing, sorbets and ice cream so full of flavour. We all had a lovely family reunion and will definitely visit more often.

Booked in for lunch again on Monday just before Lockdown 2.0. We were greeted with a roaring fire as the rain pelted outside. Again, delighted by the gravadlax and Chicken parfait starters, we both had the steak pies, and then a crumble and brownie for pudding. All perfectly cooked and presented, staff were lovely, all the other tables were having a great time too. No idea what the tiny percentage of negative reviews are on about, the food and service are consistently great, and we have now visited numerous times, on various days and in multiple seasons. This is definitely one of the best pubs in Oxfordshire, and as anyone who knows the area well can attest, there is some pretty stiff competition for that title. Al leer críticas sobre The Rose and Crown, mi esposo y yo, junto con dos amigos, estábamos ansiosos por disfrutar el almuerzo del domingo aquí. Lamentablemente, quedamos muy decepcionados. Servido en platos fríos. . . . . mala presentación. . . . . . . . . . ¡Me temo que tuvimos mala suerte! Este fue un error muy costoso.

I remember The Rose and Crown from when I was a young boy who lived in the area nearly 80 years ago.At that tender age, I wasn't permitted to be in the pub so, all those years later, it is now nice to be allowed inthe place and also to sample the delights that it offers. It still retains the 'Olde Worlde' atmosphereof those bygone days but it also has the up-market appeal for younger clientele. Finally, but most importantly, the food is simply out of this world. That's why I visit it often, although I now live over 20 miles away.If you've not been there before, you won't be disappointed.

(how many people have just drove / waked on past) there is no hanging baskets no flowers of any kind in fact, rickety old garden benches that wouldn't look out of place in a skip, no parasols to keep the sun off! broken stone steps and old flower pots, uneven paths to watch out for, weeds plentiful I'm amazed the grass even gets cut! go into the gents toilets which are outside they have to be the worst I've ever been in might as well go in a bucket! no heating that I could see and on my visit I couldn't get any hot water out of the tap which is a bit concerning esp at these times with corona virus about.Inside is as you would expect from an old pub, nice with a big fire place though a little cold in winter as it doesn't seem to give out much heat, adequate bar offerings for most, I'm an ale drinker and it would be nice to see a better selection of ales, the food is very nice have eaten here on a number of occasions and has always been very good slightly small portions for the cost I may add roasts esp! service very good , owner I think is the chef is probably fair to say is not a people's person and is probably best kept of the bar or serving customers but a very good chef. this is a totally honest review not exaggerated in any way, would I eat there again! yes I would because the food very nice would take some antibac wipes with me, would give it 5*s but for the whole experience I've given it 3 which I think is fair

On a recent visit to the rose and crown I felt it had a lovely, cosy, local pub atmosphere. The gentleman running the pub was friendly and welcoming and the food was proper home made food. Would recommend

The Rose and Crown has everything: good; stunning location; top quality experienced (ex Connaught Hotel) management and cooking; local support as well as those who find it well worthy of a journey there and above all the best bread and butter pudding to be had for ready money

Good beer and good tasty food. Bit stingy with the veg (one small dish between 3 adults} however more was bought when asked for. Roast potato's are excellent.

This is a real pub! great beer properly kept. Food in this lovely pub is real food . Too many restaurants and pubs try too hard to paint a picture on the plate and lose the plot completely. Food is first class and well priced. Always a smiling face behind the bar and excellent waiting staff.

Gracias martin

We cycled to the village to go to this pub. Well worth the trip. Welcoming fireside table even though it was a sunny day. Friendly staff and locals. Spice pumpkin soup was fabulous and ciabatta well filled and with quality ingredients always a good sign. Good food, good value and picture postcard pub what more could you ask.

We went for lunch for my husband's birthday and everything was excellent. We both had the steak pie as we'd had it previously and knew how good it was. Additionally the atmosphere was lovely and the fires were lit and it was friendly and relaxed. The customer service was excellent too - we were really well looked after and felt very welcome. We both agreed we should go back again soon.

Nuestros amigos no tenían ninguna queja.

Just popped in for a drink and was met by a flustered landlord. Ordered Old Hooky which was good but the salted peanuts were not. Place felt cold and so did the plain Windsor chair. Got a pleasant smile of farewell though.

We live nearby the pub and often walk down as my daughter likes to ride her bike. Today we walked down with my mother in law and her husband. We sat outside at first as it’s quite small inside and the weather was fine. After a few drinks we went inside as we have a 7 month old and it was getting chilly, there were no seats in the bar area but the landlord kindly offered us a table in the dining area providing the dog didn’t go on the carpet!!

Dropped in for lunch mid walk. Very warm welcome. Super pint of Hook Norton Seasonal beer at a very sensible price. Attractive pub food menu. We both went for the steak and ale pie, which was just what we needed. A pot style pie, with an intensively flavoured gravy packed with big chunks of tender beef. Nice portion of welcome cooked vegetables and a generous portion of chips. Great service, why aren't all village pubs like this???

After a short walk from a local estate we found this delightful country pub in the middle of a very attractive village. The welcome we received was excellent, immediately we asked for a table we were promptly shown to one and the menus were delivered. Specials were offered and three of us (the adults) chose the Bourguignon, which were delicious! The children enjoyed their meals as well!

The food here is delicious, especially the Sunday roast. The pudding are lovely as well but I would say the cheese board is a little on the small side and a bit disappointing. They do not have any high chairs for Babies available which made thing quite difficult. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful pub in a lovely village with great food.

We called ahead to the pub as we needed a camper stopover close Brize Norton. The landlord Dave was incredibly helpful and we were able to make use of the ample flat car park at the back of the pub for the night we needed. The facilities in the pub are first class and service was excellent - Dave went above and beyond to make our stay an absolute pleasure. Staff and locals were all friendly and welcoming to us. We were lucky it was ‘vinyls night’ so were treated to some great music while we were having drinks in the bar. Highly recommended, I’m sure we will be back soon

We loved it. Perfection location and the quintessential English pub. Outstanding food and service and the ambiance, decor is so wonderful. The highlight of our Cotswolds trip. Near to Jeremy Clarksons new pub as well so this little area is the perfect spot for a weekend spent in the pub. Well done Swan.

First timer and the experience was five stars all the way. I had the meaty breakfast which was brilliant and fresh and loads to eat. My daughter had the avocado on toast with a beautiful poached egg. Again it was excellent. We loved the decor and vibe of the cafe too. Service was superb and it really is dog friendly too. You must visit.

Visited with a friend for a bit of a business meeting/dinner followed by an overnight stay. It was everything we could have asked for and Hattie, who looked after us on arrival and through the afternoon and evening, was a superb host. Dinner (and breakfast) was great - good choice on the menu and very tasty. Rooms were smallish but perfectly fine, beds comfortable and my room had a spacious bathroom. Overall, a great place for a night out or an overnight stay.
