Only came across the Rose and Crown recently and we love it. The staff are amazing, helpful and can’t do enough for you. The first time we came we didn’t book and we soon realised why it’s better to . The pub was full within 30 mins all the customers dining . The menus are varied with thought for all. Small portions or large portions. I opted for a half pint of whitebait and a burger which were both cooked to perfection. It’s a proper community pub , well cared for with fantastic staff and a great chef . I’m a gm of a hotel myself and love the Rose and Crown in Thurstonland 👍🏼👍🏼

To be honest £89 to sleep under a bright emergency light. You can’t go out after 11!!!! We was only told this on arrival - the message arrived not long before we arrived…. There was mice in the ceiling. Having to leave a big chunk of key every time you leave. Made us feel very clostrophbic - also the room was boiling hot with no air con…. Food was brilliant. But pricey. Staff was helpful. I would give this stay a 4/10.

For me, this was the most appalling meal I have been served since I left school 60 years ago. The menu offered “ Indian style prawn curry” No self respecting Indian would have ever served anything so very tasteless and gross. What was presented was a mush of mainly carrots, mushrooms and a few bullet textured prawns. No hint of Indian spices, no taste of curry. Just a very disappointing heap of compost. The cook has no concept of what Indian food tastes like and needs to taste what it he makes, he may realise the how poor his attempts are. My friend was also very disappointed with his gammon. The meat presented was no thicker than a piece of bacon, Overcooked, tough and overall a waste of money. I was recommended to eat here but despite the charming waitress, it is definitely a no go for us. Shame as the pub is very nice.

This is our second visit. The first time Jackie had a very poor Thai curry. Today we decided to give the Rose and Crown a second chance. Jackie had asparagus warped in palma ham. Very nice. When the chap on the next table received his, it had a cheese sauce over it. NOT ours!!! Main course...... I had gammon. Tough as old boots!!!! How on earth do you overcook gammon? Jackie had chicken something. The chicken was inedible. (Cooked some days ago I suspect) The bar staff were wonderful. When I told them that our food was well below standard, they accepted this. It was as though negative comments were not uncommon. Sorry Rose and Crown. That's our last visit.

My sister in law booked for us to eat here after visiting previously so we decided to walk up from our accommodation in Thunderbridge , 2 miles uphill earned us a drink outside before going to our reserved table. The Fishcakes were good just not exceptional , the pique hot and tasty. For mains 2 whole plaice and 2 cod chunks with tikka sauce. Again perfectly cooked cod, but probably I would prefer a little more flavour. to the sauce. 1 Lemon Meringue pie was declared very light and perhaps not lemony enough . The damage £80 for 4 of us each having 2 courses and 1 had 3 courses. The drinks 4 of them came free with 2 courses so that kept cost down . Great friendly service in busy pub with good atmosphere. I found this pub as I was getting bored going down south all the time and this kept popping up, I read all the reviews and there were top marks all round for accommodation, food and beer (can't go wrong) not to mention the owner/staff. So I just booked it for 4 nights, it's the middle of nowhere and the complete opposite to where we live (Sunny Essex lol). What can we say from the moment we walked in Richard was there and was really friendly and welcoming, we went straight up to our room before lugging in the cases. The rooms are immaculately clean and a really good size, you have everything you need for a fantastic stay. The key's to the room's are unique we will say and they made us both laugh . (Picture not included so if you want to see it you will have to go). After we were settled and unpacked we headed to the bar and OMG before we had even ordered drinks we were speaking to the locals- (I do have to say northern hospitality is underestimated and will definitely miss that!) the bar staff (yes Richard you are of course included lol) were fantastic, very attentive and welcoming. They have a plaque in the bar saying 'enter as strangers leave as friends'- this is so true.Food... what to say... we both have said frequently it's excellent, hats of to the chef as we couldn't fault a thing and yes we ate and drank a lot! One night I just about managed to munch two steaks that were cooked perfectly (food is that good)! With no complaints. The breakfasts are a force to be reckoned with! Didn't get to try the full English (as we were full from the night before), but hey next timeThe area was so picturesque and Truly idyllic, we loved just driving round and seeing where we ended up, getting out now and again to take snaps and having a walk. We will return, and already miss the place/locals......most of all the banter! Thanks for an amazing stay. Gives us something to look forward to returning too and can't wait until next time.Keep up the good work Rich, thanks once again for everything and see you again soon mate.Mart and Net, (mr & mrs Essex)!

I again reiterated the fact that I had a taste card. We duly ordered our food which when it came was absolutely fine. The problem came when i came to pay the bill. The owner?chef? was extremely rude when I offered the taste card, she said that there was nothing in the diary and I hadn't made a booking which I certainly had. We just dropped in for a few drinks on a quiet Sunday night while staying locally overnight. Richard made us immediately welcome and served me a few tastings of his great house ales without charge. I returned the favour by ordering a few of my favourite, being Irish I am not a great ale drinker but I was very impressed with his selection and the choice that I made, ordering a few pints or more of some strange Northern stuff that tasted great. I can't remember the names and it doesn't matter because Richard will do the same thing to you. Rejoice.!You are not an anonymous visitor to the Rose & Crown, Richard includes you. He allowed us to select music on his new fangled music player (used to be a Jukebox in my day.!) Included us in the Pizza order for his children and laughed at me when I wanted posh vodka (is Grey Goose posh ..?) Yes, you know you are home when the Landlord feels comfortable enough telling you Grey Goose is not for hardened Yorkshire people and you are just a big Girls blouse trying to order it in a proper pub.So I had some more ale. Great pub. Great Owner. Great fun, do not miss it.

The Rose and Crown is an unpretentious pub in an out of the way spot near Holmfirth. My wife & I have lunched there on a couple of occasions and have not been disappointed. Richard & Wendy offer good quality reliable pub food together with an excellent selection of well kept real ales. On both occasions I've enjoyed steak pie topped with a light short crust pastry (none of this puff pastry rubbish!) while my wife enjoyed fish & chips both of which came with proper chunky chips.Moderate prices make the Rose & Crown excellent value and it's well worth searching out. We will definitely be back.

A great atmosphere at the Rose & Crown. Every night has a theme - Friday is Fish night with all the seafood coming from Fowey in Cornwall. Wendy and Richard are great Chefs - the food was delicious served by very attentive staff. good choice of ales and cider. Yorkshire folk are so welcomimg and we soon made friends in the pub.

called in on saturday tea time. it was very busy with locals at the bar but the restaurant bit empty so got ourselves a seat. the bar staff and locals all seemed very friendly and the food was lovely , i had the stilton and mushroom burger and oh had fish and chips which was very large. the only reason that i am only giving 3/5 is because i could smell wet dog... yes it had been raining earlier that day but the smell for me was quite off putting, it didn't bother the oh so maybe i am more sensitive to smells. it is a country pub and that does bring walkers with dogs so maybe we should of chosen somewhere else. but if you don't mind the dog smell then go for the food as it was top notch!

Stayed here for a night. Close to Holmfirth in a village setting. Were made to feel very welcome by Richard, the host, when checking in. There was a lively pub atmosphere of mainly locals in the evening, but not rowdy at closing time, if you've already retired for the night! There are only a couple of rooms, but they are well appointed, with everything you need for a short stay. The pub menu is good and the beers are well kept. All the staff were friendly and genuinely interested in their guests.Would be happy to stay here again.

I recommend the steak, fish and mussels. Lots of local ales to tempt your taste buds.SKY Sports is also available. And if you are a business traveler lodging in the area. This is not a bad place to spend the night.

This is a pub that we have re-discovered. For food it is one of my favourites, the menu is very good. There is a specials board for seasonal choices. I am a faddy eater and my husband used to be a chef so when we say the food is good we actually mean that generally it is excelent.

We recently stayed at the Rose and Crown and were very impressed. The rooms were spotless and spacious and the breakfast the next morning was amazing! The staff were very friendly and helpful and the price was very reasonable. I have stayed on hotels and b+b's all over the world and would not hesitate in recommending this little gem!

This is a smashing pub! We have been coming here for nearly 20 years. Lots of changes over that time. They are trying to make an honest living out of good food and great beer- what's not to like about that?! The suet puddings are great, and if you like proper fish n chips, this is the place for you! A reliable good quality meal!

Very pleasant looking from the outside but inside is reminiscent of an old pub come boarding house affair there's a good choice and theme nights try to be interesting but unfortunately it's just bog standard pub food. They should try to stop being too clever and stick to good pub meals and initiate some atmosphere. Not worth the trip

The landlord Richard is a great guy and can't do enough for customers. Accommodation is very comfortable. Will be back here as soon as we can.

Having not been to this pub before we weren't sure what to expect. As group of 7 (30 something's) we all appreciate decent food, and the boys wanted decent real ale on tap and we weren't disappointed. The service was brilliant and not only were we made to feel very welcome but the waitress couldn't be more helpful - bringing extra portions and even knocking us £16 off our bill!We all had either the black pudding fish cakes or battered Brie for starters, which was well presented, hot, crisps and more than generous in size. for mains the majority of us( on the recommendation of our lovely waitress) went for the suet pastry steak pie, as she assured us it had been made that day And we would love it. We couldn't decide on chips or mash so she kindly said shed just bring a selection of sides. The portion size was big and the pies were a gluttonous treat! As promised they came with wonderful homemade chunky chips, creamy mash, creamed leaks, red cabbage, carrots and parsnips. She even bought out more chips halfway through- needless to say we were stuffed! The pub had a singing comediene on, who was pretty good and the venue had a great friendly vibe with some tasty real ales. So everyone was happy. The bill was very reasonable too, We will certainly be heading back!
