The Rising Sun is the most consistently fantastic pub that we have come across in the area. The food and service is always of the highest standard. What stands out about this pub is that the staff go out of their way to accommodate and this means the pub is always filled with happy customers. A brilliant atmosphere. I have and will continue to recommend to others.

The perfect Sunday lunch country pub! The restaurant was almost full, we hadn’t booked but the staff were super friendly and gave us the table in the bar area. Ordered from the starter and pudding menu. All were delicious. Roasts looked great - and from previous experience they would have been. Love the fact they do a small portion roast! On the plan for next time. They seem to have a good programme of events during the week too Such a gem of a pub.

My lovely wife reached a 'significant ' age recently. Lynda approached George as to possibility of having a celebration at the Rising Sun. No problem. On the evening 40 or so guests were treated to some of the best canopies I've encountered any where and then an excellent bbq. The terrific team made sure nobody went thirsty. Suitable music ensured dancing. Everyone had a great evening in the wonderful surroundings of the Rising Sun. And most importantly, Lynda had a night to remember. Thank you George and crew.

We recently went for a family birthday meal - it was steak night - most of our group had the steak, and I had the mushroom and stilton burger. Everyone thought their steaks were excellent (my mum said best ever!) and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal... we all had starters, mains and desserts and it made our family birthday meal a very enjoyable experience - we were well looked after and after the meal we sat in the garden - love the vibe here - thank you!

First time visit for us and loved it! We were going to just rock up but glad we booked as it got busy fairly quickly. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was delicious. We had the three roasts (beef, pork belly and turkey), chicken wings and pork belly roast. I loved the cauliflower cheese and the extra little jug of gravy (which was proper gravy with so much umami flavour) The meat for each roast was cooked perfectly. We plan to visit again so we can try more of the food.

What a gem to find. We visited this pub after a lovely walk in the area and we were very pleasantly surprised. The exterior of the pub is gorgeous, with beautiful flowering baskets everywhere and a very well kept garden with plenty of seating. As the pub is off the road, its really peaceful, a great place to sit and relax with a drink and food. We visited with friends and each of us had a different main course. All the food was delicious and the burger was huge, clearly home made and very tasty. The service was attentive and friendly. This is our first time here and won't be our last. I was one of a large group of runners and walkers who lunched here (AFTER our exercise!) As its pictures show, this is a quintessential English country pub, almost invisible from the road - but well signposted - and set at the back of a large garden for outdoor dining. The interior is equally attractive. Given our number, we had all pre-ordered: I was eligible to choose the 'vintage' offer of a reduced size main, in my case a chicken & bacon Caesar's Salad, and similarly downsized desert of chocolate brownie and ice cream for a set price: great value. We bought our drinks and paid our bills at the bar before the food was brought outside quickly and efficiently: name called out, hand up, plate in front of you! Given the good weather, it all made for an excellent day out.

I was taken for a lunch here recently, and had the 10z steak, medium to well done, chunky chips, peppercorn sauce and salad. I would rate at 4.7/5 but have given five stars. Price wise it’s the upper end of what I’d want to pay for pub grub - £27 for the steak, £3.50 for the peppercorn sauce, and about £4 for the mushrooms - so almost £70 for two steak meals without drinks. But, the food was some of the best pub food I’ve had in the area. It was well presented, piping hot, the steak was melt in the mouth delicious and perfectly cooked. In addition, they have a lovely open fire which I sat by, and the chap who served us was really friendly, welcoming and cheerful. The 4.7/5 instead of 5, is because I think £3.50 for a small sauce and £4 for a few mushrooms is a bit too much up-selling. The Guinness could have also been a tad colder. But that’s a minor detail and I’d go back in a heartbeat. One of the best pubs around. Big sun-trap of a garden too and nearby walks for the dogs on tap. Keen to try a Sunday roast!

Our Christmas meal from work, an opportunity for us all to get those Christmas jerseys out and party. The Red Lion is in the village of Brightwell cum Sotwell just outside of the market town of Wallingford in Oxfordshire. Set Christmas menu, plenty of choice, we could choose 2 or 3 courses. The food was cooked perfectly and presented very well. Lovely atmosphere, it's sort of cosy, just a lovely place to spend a few hours. Thank you.

I am a kind of burger fan, my other half celebrates the national fish and chips day here 😊, but I would say here the Scottish Cod and the Berrick Burger are the non-plus ultra of pub food nationwide ✅ All ingredients supplied by local farms, bakeries. Hospitality, kindness, five stars, A+ class. Pets friendly, playground for kids, beer garden, spacious carpark, friendly locals. Strongly recommended place☝

We can not fault the food, the food was delicious. The only thing that let our visit down was the service. We had our starters cleared and wasn’t offered another drink even though we had empty glasses. Mains came (still empty glasses) and even though we addressed that partner didn’t like onions we were assured that we would be fine with the steak only to find out it had onions in the sauce, partner asked if peppercorn sauce was available, chef said it would be 5 which we said no problem, partner waited to eat steak, got to 15 minutes later so we chased up the sauce only to find out the waitress thought we said don’t worry about it. In that time we had to hunt for vinegar as wasn’t asked if we needed any sauces and then went to the bar to get more drinks and ask for ketchup as also wasn’t offered. There was only 3 tables but plenty of staff on floor so no need for poor service. Must point out the manager did come and apologise.
