King William in South Oxfordshire

Really lovely location and lovely pub to match! The food was amazing (we had the special pork and the mushroom pie) and the service made everything even better! Thank you to Sam and the rest of the team - will definitely be coming back :))

Lovely food, really good Pork Belly. Service mostly good although had to comb through the Bill as some anomalies at payment for drinks that we hadn't ordered. No doubt an honest mistake! Lovely open fire inside for the blustery evening, but plentiful outdoor seating with views over the Chilterns for warmer summer days. Very dog friendly! Went back the next day for more food!

Four of visited the King William on Saturday 16th March for a birthday meal. The service, meal and staff were excellent. It had been a while since we last visited, but we loved it and will definitely return soon

Have just returned having had a wonderful eating experience. The two 'ladies-in-waiting' were welcoming and efficient, and the chef must be complimented on the food served (we had a light bite); chips were perfection! Hadn't been since before Lockdown and we're glad we did. Thank you all, and we'll be back!

Our group of 12 had enjoyed a wonderful 6 mile walk in the stunning countryside surrounding the King William IV pub. We rewarded ourselves with a great lunch (that we had pre-booked) at this cosy pub with stunning views. The new owner, Emma, was welcoming and helpful and we were served with great food by efficient, friendly staff. A perfect end to a walk. I shall definitely visit again.

Really lovely pub, awesome views from the gardens, a couple of two ales but not great for vegans which is I'm sure down to the brewery.

Had a great Sunday lunch at King William IV. After a morning walk we arrived slightly late for our 2pm table and the lunch service was in full flow but we were met by friendly staff who were happy for us to have a drink outside before returning to our table to eat lunch. The food was excellent - served piping hot with plenty of gravy and selection of seasonal veg to share. The dessert specials were a treat - apple and pear crumble and the most delicious walnut treacle tart homemade by the chef. All in all a great visit and we will return.

Good steak dinner, beautiful pub

Popped in on the off-chance of a roast dinner with no booking. Pub was busy but served by lovely owner who squeezed me in. Lamb shank absolutely delicious with plenty of roasties and gravy with seasonal veg. Will definitely return!

Having previously lived in the area and knowing this was an old country pub with spectacular views I took my family back for Sunday lunch. The food was good and the service friendly but slow. We needed to delay one of the meals and this in the end took far too long to arrive. The toilets were a disgrace and would actually dissuade me from returning

Lovely spot lovely beer good service food very exspensive portions small my fish was not fresh and let a horrible bitter after taste my wife said it smelt odd too . Also there is a hefty service charge which I was not aware of so be warned.

After a long walk had lunch at this lovely pub with spectacular views. Inside is simple but very nice. Great food and drink’s reasonably priced. Very nice young lady served us our piping hot tasty food. Fish and chips, Ham egg and chips and two chunky Ham baguettes. Will go back in the summer. 😁😁

Very disappointed. We went for Sunday lunch. Prawn cocktail was just lettuce prawns and a poor quality Marie Rose sauce the bread served with it was 3 slices of a baguette and not the freshest, and the price was £9.The pate starter may have been homemade but was a few days old as the outer edge was turning green. The main course was ordinary, and the beef was tough. The pork was ok. The staff were OK, but the waitress looked and was miserable. It was a shame, but unfortunately, we will not return.

We had a fantastic time at the King William today after a beautiful walk around Ipsden. To start, we sat outside, enjoying a pint in the glorious autumn sunshine. The views are beyond gorgeous. Moving inside for lunch, we indulged in delicious fish and chips, followed by generous slabs of sticky toffee pudding. Service was great: friendly and unobtrusive. We definitely intend to return and will recommend the King William heartily!

Tasty roast. Extremely busy, so service not great, but no surprise really as it was a lovely sunny autumnal day so presumably lots of walk-in too. Very quaint and cosy, amazing views. Will definitely return.

Always a delight to come here for the outdoor tables on a clear and sunny day. Far-reaching views and a beautiful setting make this worth the lengthy trip. New management is a massive positive! Be aware, though, that their website is not up to date.

What’s happening with the King William??? Haven’t been since May and was really disappointed in returning, Substandard service and no atmosphere. Food cold & tasteless. It’s a 1 Hygene Rating so will not return

I love this place, despite the fellow with the tracheotomy questioning me why I park in the car park every time I visit and telling me "it's not for walkers". But on June 2 when I popped in the pub was a disaster show. A young chap behind the bar did not know how to serve a pint, nobody was in charge, foods orders to the outside tables, where me and my dearly beloved were sat, were delivered to the wrong people and with mixed up orders for offerings that were a shadow of what had been on offer when a new menu came in December 2022. Worse than that, customers had waited an age to be fed. We didn't order food. So what happened, I would love to know? The new menu had come in and all seemed fine and dandy with the two ladies running the pub in December 2022 - plus the man with the tracheotomy. The setting for this pub is remarkable, but I have not been back since - almost three months - and want to. But with the price of beer and food these days I can't justify taking a gamble with the food - there is no chipper nearby.

We’ve been here a few times when we visit our relations who live in North Stoke ,it’s a bit off the beaten track narrow roads but worth it ,outside seating which is great especially on a sunny day ,nice old character pub ,just a cosy feel about it ,there’s parking behind the pub ,it’s very popular especially on week ends .definitely worth a visit

Waited over an hour for our food which would have been fine if we had been told when we ordered that there was a long wait. The sea trout was delicious but the vegetables were plain boiled and very disappointing. The walnut treacle tart was excellent. The beer was well kept.

Having booked in advance for an important celebratory lunch, we agreed to arrive half an hour earlier in order to avoid clashing with a larger party booking. It seemed to make no difference because the larger party orders were prepared in front of our four main courses. It took an hour and a half before they arrived. No apology for the wait or appreciation for waiting. The fish and scampi were fried to a crisp. Having waited so long and with a disinterested attitude of staff- “others were cooked before yours”, it would have spoilt the celebration further to complain. Not sure if it was a shortage of staff or lack of training, but the situation could have been handled more positively. On the positive side, chef was prepared to make a sandwich filling not on the paper menu ( though shown on the website). Having come away, we see an additional 12.5% service charge added. This is an ideal location with so much to offer. At a time when hospitality is struggling, so sad that it will be a while before we return.

Service/attitude = sucks Unpleasant! Why a service charge simply to carry the food to the table = this should be already incorporated into the price. No surprise it was almost empty. Won't be going back anytime soon.

Nice countryside views, good service, food a little pricey for what you get. Ordered 4 Sunday roasts which were perfectly cooked but only problem the food came with 2 small dishes of vegetables which meant each adult had 3 slices of carrot, 4 small pieces of cauliflower and a tablespoon of cabbage. I noticed on some of the earlier reviews that this was not a one off problem.

My first time here. Its a proper traditional England pub. Very nice inside. Very small though and not much space for just drinking.

The location cannot be disputed, it is wonderful. and this little pub has been on the local agenda for a long time. New faces but they are carrying on the tradition of good food good service and always a great place to go. Nothing has gone downhill in spite of the disturbing challenges that are currently present in the hospitality industry. A lovely meal good service and also very busy which was good to see. Already making another reservation for a future event in a couple of weeks.

Much improved since my last visit. Proper food now and more attentive staff. We were a party of 8, and the all the dishes we had were great. The only negative was both courses we had were missing a dish.

Had a fantastic Sunday lunch here. Service was great with friendly and attentive staff. Portion sizes are generous and the quality of the roast is high - one of the best roasts I’ve had in a while! Views over the fields are stunning, looking forward to coming back!

What a great choice! We held our daughter’s wedding reception at the King William IV. Wonderful views over the Chilterns, excellent food, and so many seating options both inside the traditional pub, and out in the extensive garden, including the viewing platform. A superb find. Never been here before and so glad we have. Met friends who are staying at Benson and who we haven't seen in 20 years. Greetings and help by staff was excellent. Food absolutely brilliant. Atmosphere and views stunning. Arrived at 12.15 for a booked table at 12.30. Loved it so much we stayed until 4.45. Highly recommended and a place to return to. Thank you for everything and your hospitality.

We went for dinner in mid-June - our last night of a UK holiday and the third time we've eaten at The King William in 2023. And maybe the 20th or 30th time over the past 25 years or so, Everything was OK - service, food, drinks, waiting time, etc, so no complaints. The rest of the family said that dinner wsn't at quite the same level as in March, and my own dinner was a bit of a mis-match with calves liver but served with gravy and mash. Liver and mash OK, but calves liver deserves better than gravy and mash ! However, unlike the prvious two visits this year, our bill at the end of the evening included a 12.5% Service Charge. Not expected, of course, and let's face it, almost impossible to argue about without appearing to be a miserable bugger. Of course we'll go again the next time we're in the area, but more in hope of what was than expectation.

Went with friends. Food overpriced and lacking in flavour. Stuck in the 1970s. I pity the locals.

Loved this place - great on a lovely day as the view is very peaceful. The pub was nearly too busy for its own good, but when some more staff came in, it clearly picked up!

What an amazing find - by accident. Impromptu decision to follow the sign to the pub on the road out of Wallingford, led to an amazing view, great food and really friendly service. We will be back!!

A family visit to the King Bill after a very long absence was a pleasant surprise. Very attentive service on arrival at a busy Sunday lunchtime and drinks arrived quickly. Our lunch choices were all good and the sticky toffee pudding to die for! It’s lovely to have this pub back on our list of local places we must visit again. Well done the new(ish) team, this lovely pub is lucky to have you running it.

We went to the King William on a Saturday lunch time after a walk in the area. It's a pub we have been to many times before and is in a lovely spot. We'd booked a table and although it was fairly busy I think we'd have managed to get a table. The service was a bit slow and not especially friendly but the food made up for it. 2 of us had the nicoise salad which came with a tuna steak and the other person had scampi and chips. Both dishes were a good size portion even though they came under the light bites section!! The total cost including 2 pints and a non alcoholic drink was approximately £61 including service. We'd happily return again.

Great views, location, friendly and busy staff, good beer, excellent food BUT….hopelessly understaffed on a busy Sunday lunchtime so there was over an hour wait for food. Other recent reviews don't allude to any of this, so maybe they were just having a bad day.

Fantastic pub, food excellent, views spectacular, especially from the raised seating area which catches the last of the sun. Friendly, happy to serve us a pint even though they officially closed 3 hours ago. Dogs very welcome. Fantastic walks with a pint at the end. Will be back soon

Five of us went for lunch today to celebrate my Dad’s 93rd birthday, it was a special visit as we used to go to this lovely old pub regularly in the 70’s and 80’s, it’s kept it’s charm and we received a very warm welcome....

The food that was ordered took 1 hour and 20 minutes to get it delivered to the table! When it arrived, the 2 fish pies were stone cold so we requested to get them reheated. Luckily they came back hot.

Really is a little gem of a pub in a very beautiful setting. Such a lovely experience. Really nice vegetable lasagne but would be great if there were more veggie options and no vegan option at all at mo.

Good beer - unfortunately both Cask Ales were out when I visited. Warm fires and good food menu. Some improvements have been made since my last visit - they have installed a viewing platform and an outdoor kitchen for use in warmer weather. Dog friendly with water provided outside in a raised bowl.

Exactly what I want from a country pub. Back in the U.K. at Xmas time and this place filled my cosy nostalgia needs. Fire, views, timber and low roofs, friendly service, great food. Textbook and worth a stop.
