The Baskerville Arms in Shiplake has recently been revitalized with comprehensive updates to its bar, kitchen, accommodations, parking area, and gardens. On a subsequent visit, the results were impressive. Thanks to the vision of its current owner and the collaboration with Jeremy, a previous Henley local publican, the venue has been reinvigorated. Its interior decorations are elegantly accomplished, offering high-quality aesthetics that create a warm and welcoming environment when entering or moving towards the garden. The exterior now boasts charming seating areas with provisions for children's activities, and a dog-friendly policy. The menu presents an array of excellent options, particularly for those with gluten allergies or dietary restrictions. Our chosen dishes for the day, cajun chicken complete with relish and fries, alongside classic Fish 'n' chips accompanied by garden peas and fries, did not fail to satisfy. The servings were so generous that we opted out of dessert—perhaps on a future occasion. As personal patrons, we rank this pub as our preferred destination for dining out due to its diverse menu, congenial staff, and delightful ambient experience. It comes highly recommended.

Although they have done a brilliant job of refurbishing the place the opening hours (closing times to be precise) are like the Wild West. 11pm means you will not be served after 10.45pm etc... rubbishing pub traditions. Make it clear.

We had another wonderful weekend at the Baskerville. The rooms are very comfortable and the breakfasts are amazing; however, it's the owners who truly make the experience exceptional. Their warm hospitality and attention to detail make you feel right at home. Whether you need local recommendations or just a friendly chat, they are always available and eager to assist. Their genuine care for their guests transforms a great stay into a memorable one. We can't wait to return!

Frist time eating at The Baskerville and it was fantastic! Home made chicken pie was absolutely delicious with pastry Mary Berry would be proud of, very nice wine at a very reasonable price and happy staff all contributed to a fabulous evening. There was a lovely atmosphere and we all felt very welcomed and looked after. Highly recommend.

The food and coffee were very good. We were out with friends that we have known for 40+ years. We knew we would have a good evening. How could it go so wrong?Service. Customer Service - does anyone remember what this was? We had a table booked for 7pm. It was reserved. So far, so good. The menu was limited but we knew the pub had changed hands and was being upgraded. No problem. We were not given a wine list. We ordered house wine and beer. After ordering the food appeared in a timely fashion. They served three of us and then asked if there was anything else we needed. The fourth guest said she would like her meal, please. The waitress visited the kitchen and returned saying the Chef had forgotten to cook her meal but he would treat it as a priority. It didn’t take that long but could have been handled more tactfully. At 9:06 we were asked if we had finished and would like to pay. We had only just ordered coffee from another of the six or so waiters, chatting behind the bar - we’d had to go to the bar to order more wine. This despite the fact that there were only two other tables occupied. The coffee arrived and soon after we paid the bill (adding a tip despite the lack of service). We lingered for a while as we hadn’t seen one another for several months. The other diners left and about 9:25 the lights were dimmed. There were several other customers still drinking. We realised we were expected to leave and, still in relatively good humour left the pub restaurant. We were saying our goodbyes when a young waiter raced out of the door and rudely, in a loud voice, asked if we had paid! We said that we had. He then told us to wait while he went in to check! I think at that point I had really had enough and explained how offended I was to be asked in the first place but then not to be believed was totally disrespectful. I had not been to the establishment for several years and certainly will not be repeating the experience.

A disappointing meal for all four us. Moules Mariniere overcooked and rubbery in a gritty jus. Pie of the day dry and hotter than the sun, and brocoli the wrong side of al dente (barely cooked). Scampi all batter and no content, and an indifferent pasta dish. As they cleared the plates away and brought the bill, staff did not ask us if we had enjoyed the food because they knew what the answer would be. In a competitive market, you get one shot and we will not be back for food.

They have made great efforts in expanding the pub so all credit there. Staff friendly and attentive. Maybe it’s because the kitchen is recently opened and needs time to bed in but food we had maybe low priced but it too low in quality. I would rather pay a fiver more per meal and get good food. The fish pie was hunt the fish it was really a potato pie with limp asparagus. Better off serving a Charlie Bingham fish pie. Ham egg and chips just beige looking. At least add some greenery. So yes it’s cheap but it isn’t good enough.

Following extensive renovations the Baskerville Arms is well and truly back! The new owners have done a great job and the new improved space looks amazing. There is a new bar and a larger drinking and eating area. It is all very tastefully decorated with a fascinating display of old photos of the area. And you definitely won’t find nicer ladies toilets in a luxury hotel. We visited with friends and all 8 of us were served excellent food by very friendly and helpful staff. The menu is currently described as limited whilst the kitchen is finalised but there was something for everyone and we were all very happy with our choices, We enjoyed delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere. There is a lovely big garden with an outside bar and we are looking forward to spending lots of evenings there in the summer!

We were delighted to hear that the pub had reopened, but very disappointed when we visited today as it is still a building site and was extremely cold. I wasn’t warned of this when I called to book. The food used to be excellent but was very ordinary today and I didn’t feel was value for money, E.g. no vegetables with our fish pie and the apple crumble was just apple pieces with crushed biscuit on top, nowhere near the excellent standard it used to be sadly.

I BOOKED A TABLE FOR 3 FOR DINNER.IT WAS TO CELEBRATE MY DAUGHTERS BIRTHDAY. I DID THIS AFTER LOOKING AT THE WEBSITE.THE MENU AND PUB LOOKED VERY NICE. WHEN WE ARRIVED WE REALIZED THE PUB WAS BEING COMPLETELY RENOVATED.IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THIS WHEN BOOKING. WE ENTERED THROUGH THE MAKESHIFT OUTSIDE BAR IN A MARQUEE.THIS WAS COLD.THERE WAS A BLOW HEATER BUT IT WASN'T BEING USED. WE ENTERED INTO A CACOPHONY OF NOISE BY THE LANDLORD(I PRESUMED) AND WERE SHOWN TO A TABLE BIG ENOUGH FOR AT LEAST 12 PEOPLE WHICH LOOKED LIKE IT HAD BEEN USED BY THE BUILDERS TO WORK ON AS THERE WERE PENCIL MARKS ALL OVER.THE LANDLORD/LANDLADY WERE SAT ON A TABLE NEXT TO US DRINKING. WE COULDN'T ACTUALLY HEAR EACH OTHER ABOVE THE NOISE. WE WERE ASKED 3 TIMES IN QUICK SUCCESSION WHAT WOULD WE LIKE TO EAT AND TOLD THAT THE LARGE CROWD HAD BEEN DRINKING ALL DAY. I EXPLAINED WE WOULDN'T BE STAYING TO EAT BECAUSE OF THE OVERBEARING ROW. I SAW THE YOUNG INEXPERIENCED WAITRESS TELL THE LANDLORD THIS. HE MADE NO COMMENT OR APOLOGY AS WE MOVED OUTSIDE TO QUICKLY FINISH OUR DRINKS AND GO. WHAT AN AWFUL DISAPPOINTING RUDE EXPERIENCE. I WAS LUCKY TO GET A TABLE AT THE GRIFFIN IN CAVERSHAM.WHERE WE HAD A LOVELY MEAL WITH GREAT SERVICE.OTHERWISE MY DAUGHTERS BIRTHDAY WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A NICE EVENING.

A great village pub, with a very welcoming atmosphere. The Baskerville has a really old English feel to it with great old English hospitality, we were strangers from out of town and within a few minutes felt at home, Karen served us behind the bar and served our food and made us feel like we would like to visit again (and we did) the food was outstanding, fresh ingredients well prepared, generous portions and served promptly. The pub is undergoing sympathetic renovations whilst retaining its post war “middle England” charm. Great garden for sociable drinks for Al fresco dining. We walked to Shiplake from Henley along the river and took the train, a 5 minute journey back. Nothing not to like about this place.

I had a delicious burger with harissa fried onions very tasty, 2 opted for the fish finger sandwich very generous with the fish, batter was extremely nice, the final 2 opted for the steak sandwich and again found it delicious, all came with fries. We all opted for ice-cream which was sourced from Henley Gelato, very refreshing on a very hot day. I must add the service was very quick. We were mainly served by Adam who was very friendly and informative, it’s very clear that he’s very passionate about the Baskerville and the experience he can give the customers. I've been going to The Baskerville since the mid 80's and have always loved it, with many fond memories there. Nowadays I get to go once a year around the Regatta usually. However, I was at Bremont yesterday and decided to book an evening table for two as its less than 1 mile away and we needed to be in and out in 60mins or so. Superb. Infact outstanding. We both had the fish special, which we were told had been freshly caught at 3.37 that morning. The place is still charming, great ambience, the newly refurbished garden looks amazing, no foody pub smells when you walk in the door or the now obligatory 'sticky' table so prevalent in many such eateries and the service was fabulous. We went dutch and the bill for, breads and dips, fish special, coffee, NA beer and sparkling water with tip was £34 each. Well worth it. Highly recommend.

Booked Sunday lunch to celebrate joint birthdays. We all ordered Sunday Roast. Each roast came with 2 very small roast potatoes. We asked for some extra potatoes which when arrived it was a smal dish which contained 4 potatoes which was the equivalent of maybe 1 large potatoe cut up. On requesting the bill we had been charged 4.25 for this. We asked the waitres to remove this but she said she would need to ask the manager. She then returned and said no. Very diaspointing and due to this attitude we said fine we would decline leaving a tip. The waitress then became very moody. Snatched the payment terminal from our friends hands and was clearly seen moaning about us to another colleague. Very disappointed . Had much better service in other places and would not recommend or return.

It was lovely to return to The King William for the first time in a few years. We were made very welcome with our dog by the cheerful young server. The menu had a good mixture of pub classics and more inventive dishes. We enjoyed fish and chips, sea bass and the most well cooked and served burger ever. It was obviously home made, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Puddings of sticky toffee, eton mess and an affogato were fresh and delicious. The fire was roaring, the food was great, staff were super kind. What a fine lunch!

Went for Sunday Lunch and food was terrible really disappointed. We were asked as curtesy seconds after plates landed on the table if ok, that was even before we had a taste. We tried food was look warm, Pork overpowered by fennel spice not mentioned on menu or expected on Sunday roast. Shame😟
