The Rising Sun in Winchester

Visited last night and had food for the first time. I chose the sweet chilli prawn rice bowl and it was delicious. Seasoned to perfection and juicy prawns. Big portions. Very impressed and look forward to trying other dishes on the menu. My friends tell me the hanging kebabs are also yummy. Staff also very friendly and welcoming.

We came for Sunday lunch, the first time we'd been in since the new management took over in the New Year, and we were not disappointed. Excellent food, great ambience, nice staff. They've really invested in the pub and it's back to its popular best. The new head chef & menu are great. We'll definitely be back.

An excellent and friendly team who are very attentive and help make a fantastic atmosphere. Special mention to Jaz who was a credit to the team! Food was great and left feeling very full. Definitely recommend.

We went with my sister, boyfriend and son, our two children and my cousin and his fiancée for an Easter weekend lunch. We have now been to the pub for many a lunch and a couple of dinners and can’t fault the warm, friendly, attentive staff and the brilliant menu. There’s lots of choice on the menu and everything we’ve ever had has been amazing! We all had different burgers on Friday and the owtons burgers are so tasty and the chef cooks them so well. I had the one with truffle mayo which was scrummy! Good beers and cider selections too. My sister has been impressed that you were able to do a smaller portion kids meal for her 1.5 year old at a reduced price and we love the kids menu for our 4.5 year old. Thank you!

I don't normally write reviews, but I have to say that the Sunday lunch at the Rising Sun was outstanding. I had succulent pork and my partner had a lovely nut roast option. Both dishes came with plenty of beautiful fresh veg. We also had a very tasty starter, Thai spicy fish bits, to have as a side dish. I had read in the local newspaper that there were new owners, on a mission to provide excellent food and service. We enjoyed sitting in the comfy chairs watching the football. There was a very nice choice of beer and wine, too. I had a friendly chat with the locals while we watched the football. Obviously word is getting round, as I heard other people chatting about the good food. Five stars all round, for sure.

We had a family meal on Easter Sunday. The service from the team was first class organised superbly by Megan and Connor. The food was really good and the atmosphere in the pub was very welcoming. My stepson even won 3 prizes on the meat raffle. I highly recommend this pub. Food: 5/5 | Service: 5/5 | Atmosphere: 5/5

It was my wife's Birthday so I decided to surprise her with a trip to our local (we don't go out much). I booked around 16:45 ish. There were 7 of us all in all, 3 of the group had never been before. The menu was a good mix and the prices were pretty good. The food came.out after we ordered we must of waited around 20 - 25 minutes which we didn't think was too bad. When the food arrive, out eyes lit up. All of us. The food quality was excellent, very filling and we couldn't complain at the portion sizes either (we're all foodies in our family 😀). The staff were absolutely brilliant, very chatty when taking orders and had a little laugh and joke with the children in our group. Nothing was too much for them and they really helped to make the evening more enjoyable. After our meal, we picked up the bill which we were pleasantly surprised with regards to the cost. All in all, it was a great evening, great food, great staff and we've all said we will be returning again.

Lovely cosy environment, comfy seating and a cracking open fire. Very friendly staff and very welcoming. Great ales on tap and top cocktails. Hanging Kebab was delicious.

Cracking pint of tribute, lovely Mac and cheese with chorizo with a side of Parmesan truffle fries, couldn’t fault any of it, highly recommended

The pub has been open a few weeks under new management. Had a great meal with our young children, would recommend the Flintstone burger.

We were keen to try the food under the new ownership and weren't disappointed. We visited with our 4 year olds for lunch and the kids meals were out of this world. Visited today for a Sunday roast. Pub was busy but staff were incredible throughout. The Sunday roast was one of the best, and being coeliac I was really impressed with all the options. . Stayed for the meat draw and chase the ace. Great to see a pub so thriving in this day and age. The new owners have turned this place around. Just had a really delicious lunch - friendly, unpretentious, VERY tasty freshly cooked food. We had the breaded baked brie with cranberry sauce and the lamb tagine with nutty couscous. Very good indeed. Will be returning. (No photos! We ate it all)

Poor attitude from staff, including the landlord. Didn't have much beer selection, the ones they did tasted like they were from a can. Landlord tends to sit outside drinking most of the time instead of working. Would not recommend

Tiny restaurant area where everything is squashed in. Food is not up to normal pub standard sadly. Staff friendly but not the most attentive considering how many of them there were. More of a locals pub. Dog friendly is the high!

Came in for a few drinks and was very nice atmosphere and welcoming staff although whilst ordering drinks one of the people i was with overheard an adult working there speaking quite rudely including swearing to some much younger staff (obviously a child) apart from that lovely pub, watching the food go past the portions were great sizes and staff were welcoming would recommend if your going to eat.

What a horrible dive! Food looked rank , beer glasses filthy, waiting staff disinterested and rude, bar staff friendly , over priced, loud crude patrons, smoking area right by entrance/exit, toilets stank and dirty, table sticky, terrible pub huddled in a beuatuful little villlage, what a waste of £5.10 !!!

Mid week meal thought we would try The Rising Sun, the restaurant was empty which isn’t a good start, the menu very much pub grub. My husband had ham, egg and chips which he really enjoyed. I didn’t want anything fried so had a starter as a main, perhaps I read the menu wrong but not what I thought, deep fried mushrooms complete with a hair. Quite understand these things happen but when I mentioned it to the waitress she just walked away no apology, she didn’t know what lagers they had, no good bye thank you. Staff need to be trained in customer service. Sorry won’t be returning

My parter and I visited on a Friday evening and were very underwhelmed. The lighting was too bright and ruined any mood. The bar maid was pleasent, but the waitress was functional at best. Definitely no service with a smile. We had desserts and whilst the sticky toffee pudding was enjoyable the chocolate brownie was very bland

Four of us had a great lunch here today. Great menu choice,delicious food, generous portions and thoughtful extras of biscuits with coffee and chocolate mints. Friendly service too.

Eleven of us from Colden Common Community Centre celebrated Christmas early at The Riser. Definitely NOT permanently closed! We were very well looked after, and we’re given a large room to ourselves. The ham hock terrine was chunky, flavoursome, and obviously home-made. The Asian-themed prawn cocktail looked attractive, with lots of large juicy prawns. The mains included roast beef and turkey: both were generously portioned, with loads of vegetables. Four choices for pudding, including cheese, which was four large slices with salad garnish and very posh biscuits.

Met for a family meal here after our reopened under new management. The food was great, brilliant portions. The new landlady was friendly. The place clean. Could do with more veggie options on the menu but a great place.

OMG!!What on earth were Lemoni thinking?They have completely destroyed this lovely village local pub!All the character has been stripped out as well as the pool table, dart board, fruit machine, jukebox & tv!There is also no social distancing in place but that probably doesn’t matter as there are hardly any customers!The bar staff seem very disinterested and the food is very average if you are lucky enough to get service.

Friend local to the Pub invited us to join them for evening meal. So glad they did. We all had different items off the menu. All excellent. I had the lamb cutlets my favourite plenty of meat and nice chips. Good selection of wine. We will return

A pleasant Inn situated in the heart of Colden Common. Very tastefully furnished with different areas for dining. The food is wonderful, with a nicely thought out menu. Outside is a superb area to eat, drink, and let the kids have a safe run around....

Just had a late Christmas dinner for 30 -40 ladies. Excellent food, and excellent service. Staff very attentive, and always smiling. Food was excellent. Kitchen staff deserved a round of applause at the end of the meal.

One of the worst pubs I have ever been in. The staff were rude and it was a very cliquey environment. It wasn’t helped by the boyfriend of one of the young girls behind the bar was sat there getting drunk and making sarcastic comments. The owners weren’t present and it seemed to be being run by young kids who had no clue as to what they were doing. It was overpriced, the atmosphere was terrible and I definitely will not be returning.

Visited here after a trip to the local zoo. Busy pub, full of locals, car park full up. Bit of a wait at the bar to be served but once we were the food arrived quite quickly. Reasonably priced. Food very good, best Yorkshire pudding...

We had a very pleasant lunch at the Rising Sun. they made a real effort to cater for my wife’s food allergies (lactose, gluten etc) by cooking a special off the menu meal for her. Menu is quite extensive and atmosphere is simple but welcoming. Reasonable prices, recommended.

The meals were excellent, couldn't fault anything. The decor is lovely and staff very pleasant. Looking forward to visiting again. Would definitely recommend.

Me and my partner are glad that we visited this pub. The food was good and very fairly priced. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive. Decor too was really pleasant, had a nice and cosy feel to it. The pool table made our experience fun also and there was even little goats to see in the garden, they were so cute! We booked a lunch time slot for a work event and pre-ordered the food. The food was delivered swiftly and was delicious. The team at the Rising Sun were friendly and helpful.

I must have visited “The Riser”,as it is known to the locals, endless times whilst visiting friends in Colden Common.

We were staying locally for a few days break, we are in a B&B; and visiting National Trust properties in the area and getting snack lunches there, so needed somewhere local for evening meal. We could not have picked a better location, very friendly and helpful staff and excellant food. Will visit again next time we are in the area and can certainly reccomend.

Very friendly pub. Good sized car park. Excellent playground area with climbing frame and plenty of picnic benches if the weather is up for it.

Really good lunch made even better by lovely staff who looked after our dogs and us. Really cheerful and happy to help in anyway they could. Roast dinner was great as were salmon and chicken dishes. Very enjoyable, relaxed lunch with our family. We will be back.

A last minute decision, but a good one. We hadn't booked but turned up at about 1:30pm. The place was very quite - only looked as though there were one or two people in the bar and only a couple of tables occupied in the dining area. I was a bit concerned this may have been a bad sign but I was wrong.

We popped in for something to eat at lunch time hoping to find some specials like sausage and mass, liver and bacon or collage pie for about a fiver. No luck. There was evidently special 2 courses for £8.50 but we only wanted one.

We heard about this place through family friends, but due to my usual dislike for pubs and pub food we hadn't yet visited until valentines this year that is.. thanks to my husband for messing up the boooking for our original plans we decided in a last minute dash around calling The Rising sun after numerous good reviews from friends and I'm so so happy we did. Not only did we spend so much less ( we would have paid double at the original planned place) but everything was perfect. The way they had decorated the resteraunt was stunning with real roses, rose petals and so many candles, it really did look special. The 3 courses where all ridiculously tasty and huge, looked just as good as they tasted and all homemade!!! We even got presseco and chocolates to finish! I have a sweet tooth and has a chocolate fondant, I'm still dreaming about It now. Staff where great and just genuinely caring. Usually village pubs don't appeal to me however, this has the perfect balance with such a lovely resteraunt and then a seperate bar/ drinking area. All the locals we did meet where loveely and we even stayed late chatting to them with a rhubarb gin and fruit in hand. We also appreciate that they love dogs, if you're lucky you may even get too see the cute pub puppy! I always think there is room for improvement but my only possible pathetic fault is the toilets aren't sign posted but that's more a problem due to my pregnancy bladder than them, ha! Thank you, we will be back very soon with our fur baby in tow!

Lovely friendly pub just outside Winchester. Good food. Lovely decor. Beautiful clean facilities. Will definitely go again. I was there in winter but did see nice children area and seating area outside would be great for families. Worth finding.

We just moved in to the area and wanted to find somewhere to grab some lunch; the rising sun is around the corner from us so we ventured in. It was very busy but the staff were very friendly and found a table for us. The food took a while as they were so busy and had only one chef working but they communicated this to us and let us know when it would be coming which was nice as we didn’t feel like we had been forgotten. Then the food came and it was delicious (I had the lasagne and my husband has the chicken burger). The fries came in these cute little flower pots and I can’t fault anything. Will definitely be returning. There were dog water bowls so I think we will venture back there with our son and hound.

We wanted somewhere where we could have lunch then go for a walk in the New Forest so we chose the Rising Sun, Bashley Common, as we’d been past it many times over the years. It was easy to book over the phone and member of staff was very polite and helpful.

Stopped in, with friends. It had been a few years. Nice food, and better than average ales. All very good.

Wonderful Christmas meal at Rising Sun on Friday. Stuffed mushrooms, smoked salmon terrine, root vegetable soup for starters, followed by turkey, lamb shank and hake which looked like it had been created at a Michelin restaurant! Desserts of Christmas pudding, white chocolate and cranberry butter pudding, cheesecake or cheeseboard to die for. Then ambushed by superb home made mince pies. Maxine and her team were attentive and friendly as ever. Highly recommend you give our local pub a try.

Had a delicious Sunday Lunch here yesterday. We ordered the large size as we were told there would be 2 slices of beef rather than the small size that had one slice and fewer potatoes. However the slices of beef were huge and together with lovely crispy potatoes Yorkshire pudding and fresh vegetables, we struggled to eat it all. Sadly no room for a dessert. Service was very good and friendly. Definitely worth booking a table though, as they do get very busy at times.

Pretty average and a tad pricey was how I would best descibe this venue My Tuna jacket costing nearly seven pounds was ok but thats all. My friends meat was inedible. Wont be revisiting this venue have no reason too.

Fuimos a encontrarnos con la familia para almorzar, pensando que sería bueno, ya que ha sido reformado recientemente y tiene buenas críticas. Nos sentamos y había un gran cartel de no fumadores en nuestra mesa, pero el suelo estaba lleno de colillas. Los recogí mientras los niños jugaban. Es una pena que no limpian la zona a diario, fuimos los primeros en sentarnos allí. Además, la zona del jardín está sucia y podría tener que ver con alguien recogiendo basura de la hierba. El menú fue impactante, por decir lo menos, y muy caro para lo que se ofrece, una ensalada que cuesta 12 es simplemente ridículo. Así que ya nos picamos y pedimos comidas ligeras y refrigerios para mantenernos en actividad hasta la hora del té. Mi hija estaba muy hambrienta y escogió la pizza para niños, no pude comerla aunque realmente vomitó, la base de tomate es en realidad una extensión espesa de puré de tomate directamente del tubo, era tan fuerte que probé un poco pero no pude soportarlo ya sea. 6 para una chaqueta de patata es una broma también. Uno de nuestro grupo pidió los nachos (sin chili por un extra 2!) Y fue el más bien alimentado de todos nosotros. Extremadamente decepcionante, no volveremos, si va a promocionarse como un restaurante caro, entonces la comida debería estar a la altura de las expectativas razonables, esto fue grub pub de doble precio no en su máxima expresión. Y limpiar el marica termina en la mañana que era desagradable

Soy quisquilloso, estoy seguro de que muchos de los que leyeron mis reseñas seguramente lo sabrán. Le doy una crítica honesta y sí busco cualquier cosa que no importe cuán pequeña sea para destacar y resaltar. Y esta revisión la hago muy a regañadientes por 2 razones. 1 calle porque simplemente no quiero que nadie mima mi paraíso totalmente nuevo, mi escape es mi escape también. Y 2º porque no hay ninguna falla aquí que pueda controlar. El sol naciente es un final sobresaliente. Desde la comida, el servicio al jardín hasta los baños. Inmaculado.

Booked a table for 11 of us on Saturday for my sister's 40th and had a wonderful time, the staff were all very happy and professional, food was nice, however, for us the highlight of the day were the chickens and goats in the play area, thank you very much for an enjoyable time.

Having just moved into the area we decided to go out with the family for a meal. We hadn't booked but a couple offered us a bigger table and they moved to a smaller one as there were 5 of us. Portion sizes were good, child's were huge. We'd arrived at a busy time so it took a while for the food to arrive but the service was friendly. Large selection of menu choices and drinks options. Will be using the pub again now it's our local.

We were searching for a pub for lunch, came across The Rising Sun. We had sandwiches which can freshly made, with a lovely salad and chips. They have a great garden, with chickens running around and three goats which would entertain children. There is also a play frame for children. Even though we were not a regular, the staff were very attentive and helpful. Will return at sometime in the future.

Staff not interested unless you're a regular. Took 40 mins to take our order and only then after I went to the bar to grab someone's attention. Food mediocre at best and vastly overpriced for what you get. Just left and never going back. Avoid!!!!

Greeted with the news all the grilled meats and the specials were gone, walked out after an hour's wait for the starters we ordered from what remained available on the menu. Shockingly poor - don't waste your time or money here.

Pasó por aquí con un amigo para la cena. Precioso interior, recientemente reformado. Nos sentamos a disfrutar del sol. En el menú de opciones fantásticas, y un tablero de ofertas especiales. Me pareció un casero sin gluten burger. Pude pedir Stilton encima como extra. Mi amigo tenía la cerveza pescado rebozado y patatas fritas. Las porciones eran increíbles - tanta comida por un precio razonable. Conocí a la señora tierra que era realmente precioso, hablador y nos hizo sentir muy bienvenidos!

Esta noche fuimos con mi esposa para una comida. Nunca he comido aquí antes, pero sin duda volveremos. El servicio es genial, la comida es estupenda, las porciones justas que no sientes que estás a punto de entrar en batalla con su plato. Me tiene carne tarta casera y ale genial. Mi esposa leek, avellanas y Stilton tartaleta dijo que era muy bueno, así que debe haber sido. Ambiente tranquilo decoración encantador, no podría pedir una mejor experiencia

Been here a few times now and have been meaning to leave a review. What a great pub. Very friendly family run business with great food and staff. Very dog friendly. We always stop in when we are walking the dogs that way.

First impressions of this pub was how nice the staff were and how lovely the pub was inside and out lots of nice touches , we were shown our to our table and drinks order taken , great menu plenty to chose from and a specials board that had a good selection on it, we all had starters I chose the potato skins they were really good and good portion size, my husband had the pheasant which he said was amazing,I had the chilli which was very tasty , everyone was very happy with what they had and enjoyed, restaurant very clean and toilets were spotless I will 100% be going back to this pub soon only wish we had be sooner
