If you go just for a drink, be cautious. £10.30 gets you ONE pint of beer (Neck Oil) and HALF a glass of lemonade. That is very, very expensive and we left after 1 round as a result. There are much cheaper venues in New Milton. I don't see what it has to be so expensive for a drink.

Rude front of house, who was snappy with us because we had dogs with us (website says dogs allowed) and because we wanted to eat outside and she felt that it was too cold. Rude manager who very loudly asked for my daughter’s I.d. When I explained she’s 16 and she’s having a small glass of wine with her meal (which is legal), informed loudly and rudely that it was the pub’s policy that you had to be 18 and over, even when eating. Food expensive and not well cooked. Undercooked potatoes, half a small carrot, a few peas and cabbage and small nut roast for over £20. When we complained to the manager about the rudeness and how we were having a family meal celebrating a birthday, we were informed in a rude manner that we should have checked the pub policy, when actually we know the law and if the pub policy is different that needs to be stated to customers, not the onus being on the customer, also a complete lack of understanding that there is a way to speak to your customers and actually had both members of staff spoke in a polite manner and not loudly in front of all other diners then there wouldn’t have been an issue. Really disappointed, ruined the main part of the birthday and wish we had decided to go elsewhere.

Sunday lunch, roast beef not carved from a joint but obviously bought in ready sliced, and not very hot at that. Turkey roast similar. Both overpriced compared with other local pubs, considering we had Sunday lunch last week (the New Queen) for a lower price and a much more enjoyable meal. Roast potatoes and other veg okay but nothing spectacular. Service Good. Pint of Asahi £7.05 What!!!! Over £52 for one course each and a beer.

Very poor. Service lacklustre and unfriendly. We had to go to the bar to gain attention. Food mediocre; bland and tasteless in the main. Calamari all batter and kofta was tough. Lamb chops were tough, bream tasteless and really poor schnitzel with croutons meant to be Caesar Salad. Incomparably better meals in the area (and cheaper!) on the night before and after. Disappointing and over priced.

I wanted to take my sister-in-law here as I had been here before in previous years. Sorry to have to say, but we were both disappointed. On arriving I asked if they still did light bites, which was very good value on which they told me they didn't do anymore. We ordered the ploughman's which we thought was expensive but decided to have it anyway. We both thought that what we had received was in no way the price it was worth. No tomato, cucumber, pickled onions, small amount of cheese and very thin sliced ham which had been cut in two to make it look more. The ham looked like it came from a packet, not the ham off the bone which you normally get. Sorry to say that we won't be returning and will be going elsewhere in the New Forest.

We visited your establishment last summer and we had a lovely time and thought we'd come back today because we really enjoyed ourselves last time. Today though was a completely different experience to say the least. The food was a huge let down, both adults and kids meals. You'd expect for £ 8 50, the kids meals could have more on the plate...and with the sausages and mash you'd expect gravy. For the kids chicken goujons there'd be more than 2 pieces, my son was still hungry after his meal. When my friends daughter, who is autistic asked for some ketchup, she was told it was just inside, being autistic, she needs direction to help her. We also had wasps come to the table and when the waitress came to take plates away my friend told her about the wasps and the waitresses response was "have fun". My youngest son is highly allergic to wasps sp thank goodness he wasn't stung. Very disappointing, after we had a pleasant visit the last time we visited. It was a very disappointing experience and I'm not sure if we'll be back. We recently had overseas visitors which we thought of bringing here but thank goodness we didn't because they would have been very disappointed.

We visited your premises last year and had the best experience. We thought we would come back again. This time was a new experience with the food. Myself and friend had lunch and the sandwich was hard as a rock. My son had the sausages and 1 spoonful of mash costing £8.50 my son came away still really hungry but I had already exceeded my budget of spending. No gravy or anything just looked like it has been splat on a plate. My daughter asked for ketchup for her chips and was told to go and find it bare in mind she is an autistic child which needed to know where to go and I felt that was rude with no instructions of where to do Really sad that the experience this time was not how i had hoped. Really disappointed.

Arrived about 19.15 on the off chance they still served food as we had not been in since 2021 ,not very busy so was a little apprehensive, found a table that suited us in the bar area,Gentleman behind the bar was very friendly and made us feel welcomed, took our drink and food order seamlessly. After about 20 minutes our food was served and although we all had different orders all 4 meals were excellent and were all hot.2 of us ordered the desserts, these could have been better but were edible, altogether a very pleasant visit.

Lots of people outside enjoying the weather and drinks when we arrived at the restaurant. We were seated y the order for drinks was taken while we looked at the menu. The menu was varied and had something for everyone. The orders were taken, and the food arrived promptly. We both had pork chops that were cooked well and not too dry. The chocolate brownies were lovely. The service was attentive but not intrusive. The seating area inside was good with a good space between tables. There was a lot of seating outside with wooden pods to sit in if needed. The play area for children looked new with soft flooring throughout. We had a very pleasant evening

Had two meals here during our holiday. The Sunday roast was very good. It was delicious, hot and served very quickly! The vegetarian option was also very good. We had a weekday lunch too. We chose the steak and ale pie - again a good choice and a friend had the vegetarian option ( curried vegetable pie) which was also enjoyed. We had the Black Forest gateau knickerbocker glory for dessert. I felt this was overpriced but was delicious! The staff were lovely - they were very welcoming and very helpful. We had a dog with us and they gave him water and treats and made a fuss of him too! We sat inside in the main restaurant but there was great seating outside with a lovely children’s play area or you could eat in the bar. All in all, a very enjoyable visit in a relaxed atmosphere with lovely food.

This was the first time back since the rebranded and I must say this place had massively improved, the food is top notch, we went for a roast and the potatoes where crispy but fluffy and flavourful, the veg was amazing, the meat was perfect cooked, and the gravy was delicious, we also had some pigs in blankets we where amazing, the drinks felt refreshing and fresh, But the management has majorly improved, But some of the drinks and food are a tad bit pricey but worth it, So I highly suggest you go and at least try them you won’t regret it.

Since the refurbishment there is no comparison. It is way better! Went with family for Sunday lunch and it was very busy. That said, the service was quick and attentive. There were nine of us and all the food came out at the same time. The Sunday lunches (this was at 2.10 p.m.) were fresh and had not been sitting around waiting to be served. Roast potatoes were crispy and hot and the portion size was good. Price is around £20 for a roast dinner which is slightly pricey, but I think it was worth it. There were plenty of vegetables cooked just right and not mushy. We will be going back for a bigger celebration in July as my family had travelled from Surrey/Yorkshire and really enjoyed it as well. Well done I think it is much improved.

This pub in recent year has been dreadful. Poor quality food and bad service but it has recently been taken over. We booked a table for 6 of us but due to my daughter being ill we had to look after her son. So I phoned up and asked if we could add him to the table. I was dismissively told that they were too busy. Having already given my name they asked for it again and said there was bench seat so we would just have to squeeze up. Just a polite “I’m really sorry but we are fully booked and so don’t have the space to put another chair in place” would’ve done. When we arrived we managed to squeeze in but when we looked at the menu we couldn’t believe how expensive it was just for a pub meal. Also the menu was extremely limited. So some of us chose items on the specials board. When we gave our order we were told that the specials board wasn’t available on Sunday. So why have it with a list of items if they are not available? We ordered drinks and then found out that a pint of beer was nearly £8 and that a large glass of wine was £11.70. When the wine arrived I would hardly call it a large glass as we had ordered 250ml and it was more like a 175ml. The food arrived and we were shocked how small it was. More like starters. £18 for a tiny burger and a very small quantity of chips. No wonder they were trying to sell us extras. There’s a restaurant on the sea front near by that provides fantastic food and service and their prices are similar. So why go here? The restaurant has sea views too. They kept delivering the drinks and food to the wrong tables and as they seemed to have quite a lot of staff I was really surprised that they would be that disorganised. To sum up, extremely expensive food and drink, very small portions, some rude staff, disorganised and very limited Sunday menu. Would not rate this place at all and shall never go back.

The pub has recently been refurbished to a nice standard and is in harmony with the New Forest surrounding it. Lots of space, ample car parking, and for the kids, a good play area. I think there are pods and pizza ovens outside. Nice for the summer. The food was OK but not overwhelming! Typical pub chain menu. If I have to have at least one gripe, my steak was nice, but cold as was the mushroom. Would I go back? I am in no hurry.

I am cautious, and have been very careful since Feb 2020, this was my first pub meal and I was very impressed with the organisation. Met in the entrance by a lovely masked person who informed us that we could sit in the garden (as we had a dog, which had to be on a short lead) and that we could also order from the garden till. Also asked to check in.The garden was very well laid out with plenty of tables well spaced out (and a really good play area, I'd guess at suitable for under 11s) mixture of sunny areas and shade tables and an outside till. Ordered meals and drinks without having to go inside and the server was friendly and chatty. We went for lunch and especially appreciated that the junior meals didn't have an age limit as this gave the children a greater choice than just the light bites menu. Food was great, and I good variety. Considering the pub is in such an excellent New Forest location the prices were very reasonable. Toilets were modern and clean and the whole pub well kept. Would recommend

Waited an hour and a quarter for a ploughman’s lunch, a burger and two kids meals. We had to chase this up twice. We did not receive an apology or an explanation. By the time it came out my lips had turned blue in the cold and I was shivering, and our friends had eaten their mains, dessert and had coffee! You have to pay for what you order before you have received it so this of course is very clever on their part. The only good thing about this place in my opinion is the lovely play area which is great for kids.

Lovely and welcoming pub situated close to our cottage in the village , despite the previous restrictions being enabled we were still able to have a meal , all protocols observed and maintained throughout . And to end the meal a superb cheesecake and highly recommended dorset apple cake . All in all a very pleasing and satisfying evening !.

Never paid so much for such a bland meal in my life. Got the roast with it being sunday and the beef was paper thin and that is no exaggeration. No colour what so ever to it, making it so dry my drink was gone within a few minutes of starting my meal. I thought I was eating a shoe. Veg is veg but carrots, peas and green cabbage? Literally all boiled in water, so no flavour whatsoever leaving my plate with a puddle underneath. Dont even get me started on the spuds. They where pale, hard in places and had NOTHING on them. Boiled then chucked in the oven, literally couldn't taste a thing. Such a shame as it was our first meal out since lockdown with the children and our new born baby, we left immediately after paying. Not one to cause a scene or complain in front of a room full of people so we left straight away. Wont be returning, if thats how the weekly roast is i dread the rest of the menu

Went for a meal and kept going back. Beautiful place staff friendly and food great. Not sure how places like this can cope with out government support. We should be doing so much more. I can see alot of establishments are going to close.

We stopped for lunch as all the other pubs had queues and this one did not.No problem to bring in the dog. We just had ploughman's lunches. Ham was nice, but the sides very basic, and the cheddar, was like plastic edam. I never know why places don't give you a smaller excellent cheese, rather than a great big wedge, that looks like yellow rubber, and tasted worse.Service was slow, although it was Sunday, not really an excuse.

After a disappointing visit a few weeks ago we returned hoping for an improvement - sadly this was not to be. Some of the staff were very helpful but grumpiness abounded with others. The beer choice was poor and what I ended up with was almost undrinkable. When I tried to engage bar staff to talk about what beers were available I almost met a wall of silence. The food was generally fine although perhaps not as good as in previous years. Unfortunately I can’t see me going back for some time

On holiday, went for afternoon meal.Good Covid precautions, excellent service, meal was also very good. Kudos for when I asked not to have certain items from the meal, they were not on the plate when served. Good food, couldn't fault the service; what more do you want?

Stopped here whilst on a day out in the New Forest and so glad we did. Had a wonderful pub lunch sitting in the gardens. If you are in the area would recommend a visit.

The first time I have visited the large garden at rear of this traditional pub - it is spacious and comfortable. There during the school day - it was peaceful as well! I was impressed at their organisation, with a station in the garden at which my order and payment was taken. The steak pie was a real pie - i.e. with good homemade pastry under and over the meat mix - very good! However, the ubiquitous carrot and peas uninspiring. A reasonable pub meal. My one criticism - I had a mask handy/ready to use in case a staff member approached my table. However - no time, suddenly he was removing plate with inevitable proximity. Why do restaurants forget Distancing at this stage. For everyone's sake remember normal service cannot be maintained at the moment - Distance.

Having visted the new forest on holiday for 44 years, we have regularly visited the Rising Sun for family Meals. At present due to covid their cleaning regime and covid compliance make you feel very safe eating there. We have got to know Lorraine over the past years whom makes us feel very welcome with her friendly nature and top notch service. All the waiters and waitresses are warm and friendly. The food is always lovely. Best chips / lamb shanks / ribs you can get. The fruits of forest sundae is a dream. The waiters and waitresses work their backsides off to accomodate everyone. The restaurant has a large annexe where you can eat with your four legged friends, plus a large outdoor eating area where people with children can keep an eye on them whilst they use the play area. Prices are very reasonable, and although the menu is currently limited due to covid issues, the choice is still very good and varied.

We were out bike riding in the New Forest and stopped at The Rising Sun for a late lunch. There was a good COVID set-up on arrival and the tables were well spread out (inside and out). We sat outside and ordered (from the outdoor ordering point) from the lite bites menu - these were actually a very generous meal including a salad, tortillas, baguette and a selection of lovely fillings. The sunshine was glorious sitting in the garden and the food was just what we needed after a long ride. The staff were friendly / helpful and our order came promptly.

Dropped in for a late lunch on the off chance. Very busy in the garden, but seated inside the bar, and able to watch the ponies slowing the traffic. Good attention to Covid 19 precautions, felt very safe. Staff cheerful and attentive, warned us there might be a wait but we were in no hurry. I had the baked salmon in white wine, tomato and basil sauce, with chips, peas and carrots. Really tasty and beautifully cooked. Partner had lasagna and chips, hearty and filling. I had a generous scoop of blackcurrant sorbet, partner had a big slice of ginger cheesecake with cream, both delicious. Would return if in the area again.

My friend and I visited The Rising Sun one wet Wednesday lunchtime in August 2020. This pub/restaurant is situated along Bashley Common Road in the New Forest in Hampshire. After not being able to get a booking at our usual Inn at Emery Down we called in to The Rising Sun without a booking during 'Eat out to Help out' and it was a very good choice.Although The Rising Sun was very busy they found a table for us. The whole place runs efficiently and seemingly effortlessly like a Rolls-Royce car engine. The staff and whoever runs this place are very well trained and seem to know their business inside out. Other publicans and restaurant owners ought to visit this place to see how to run this kind of business. We were quickly presented with the menu which had really lovely choices at very reasonable prices (but we paid even less because of the government discounts) and our drinks orders we taken and brought to us equally quickly. When the meals arrived after only a short wait they were pipping hot and deliciously fresh. The sweet/puddings where just as good too. While having our meals we could look out through the windows at the grasslands of the New Forest that were being grazed by a few ponies because The Rising Sun is situated adjacent to the New Forest. In my opinion, The Rising Sun is well worth a visit. If you are travelling along the A35 from Lyndhurst to Bournemouth, you can take the left hand turnoff to Bashley and after about five minutes you'll be able to park in the pub's spacious car-park and enjoy a freshly cooked meal and, of course, a refreshing drink or a coffee for the driver.

I stopped here for lunch in the middle of a cycle ride. There are outside tables but the weather wasn't great so I chose an indoor table. The first thing I noticed was the robust social-distancing measures. There's a one-way system, table service only and contact details are taken on arrival.I ordered lasagna and chips plus guinness. Service was slower than usual, but understandable as the staff were delivering drinks to people at tables (who would normally order drinks at the bar). The food was very good and reasonably priced.

We were on our way to our holiday camp for our family holiday and were keen to have lunch, sitting outside. Beforehand we tried to book but they said no need we arrived with wild ponies walking past. We were warned there might be a wait for food and offered a table outside. The kids play area outside is great and secure. The food was great - traditional pub fare, I had scampi and chimps, hubby had ribs and chips, kids sausage and chips. All arrived quickly, hot and perfectly fine. And 50% off with the govt scheme. Good social distancing operations, lovely staff and would definitely go back!

A real plus is the children’s play area, parents looking for a place for the kids to play whilst you wait for food...look no further. In the heart of a gorgeous area (with the horses coming in the car park) this pub is a nice spot to get some good food. Vegan options are limited but very good and good variety. Friendly staff. The inside is a tad tired but functional and the outside is a great space. The only downside is that no one appears to answer the phone, we risked it and did alright. Whilst seated at the table I could hear the phone ringing and ringing.

We stopped at this pub for a quick drink before going to our holiday rental. Really friendly staff. Although very busy the staff apologies for the delay in service which actually wasn’t that long. We didn’t eat but from the food that we saw it all looked very fresh and well presented.

The surrounding area of this pub is truly spectacular. I ordered the roast chicken and in these troubled time’s accepted the hours wait for my food. When the food arrived I noticed the gravy was missing like the tv programs I can only imagine it went horribly wrong and they didn’t decide to serve it I would of appreciated being told. Better luck next time !

Every year I go here and every time I vow never to return. Lured by the 50% off scheme I thought this a good bet as actually didn't take bookings. Probably waited an hour food and it was so substandard. Even at half price my sorry looking ploughmans was a rip off. A teaspoon of chutney, quarter of an apple and the really cheap iceberg lettuce with 4 slices of cucumber and 4 slice of cheap tasteless tomato. I could have made something far more tasty at home and would have sourced fresh quality ingredients. Everything here is done on the cheap (except what they charge) My daughter had macaroni cheese and said it wasn't very cheesy. I tried it and it was basically a fiver for a tiny bowl of macaroni with white sauce. Not a hint of cheese. Nobody bothered to ask how our meal was which is just as well really. I did say to my husband never to let me go there again as every time I leave thoroughly disappointed.

Made a special visit to come here, was not worth it! Dirty and empty shelves! No bread and cakes as advertised! I wouldn’t exactly call two picnic benches a cafe especially being along side pet food! Do not be fooled by the photos!

Badly made coffee, extremely weak, no flavour. Normally Costa I find to be OK, not particularly great but reliably OK. Not at this branch.

I'd rang in the week before the Saturday (19th Oct) lunchtime, and pre-booked a table for our party of 13, and I said we needed 2 high-chairs. (How nice it was to ring and book a table verbally, instead of booking on-line.) On the day, we arrived to find 3 tables pushed together for us, and all was good, though no high-chairs, which the staff member got sorted fast. We arrived in a bit of a disjointed way (an initial 5, then a 3, then a 5), but this caused no problem, and we had drinks on tab. Our meal experience was really very good, with good attention by all staff (at bar and at table). The food (we had main and dessert) came in good time, and it was delicious. All in our party thought their main course was excellent, being really flavoursome. I had the cottage pie, it was delightful, as was my partner's pork rump steak. Yes, prices were a couple of pounds more per plate for mains, but definitely worth it. At no time were we hurried along, or unduly hassled, and we ended up spending much of a great Saturday afternoon there. Our 7yo in the party enjoyed the wooden play apparatus outside, and I loved the Exmoor ales! Lastly, how refreshing to have no service charge automatically added, and allow customers to decide. We'd never eaten there before, but we will again!

Got a pepperoni pizza. The man even cut it down in half for me. Only £2.30 absolute steal. Very tasty. Perfect snack.
