such a lovely place and normally great staff. Would have been so simple for the member of staff I asked for help with luggage (I had covid jab arm and could not pick up bags) to offer help but she didn't. ) I have enjoyed my visits but it just takes one staff member to kill future sales.

This review is for the Boar's Head pub only, not the hotel. This is a nice gastropub with good food, great service and decent/good prices. There's a restaurant and a separate bar with seating - both have the same menu, and the bar has a windowed seating nook. My wife and I brought our two kids in late after a long day hiking and were very happy with our choice. The server was excellent with our kids. We didn't need high chairs, but she provided new crayons right off, which was nice, as well as a great menu suggestion for the kids. The decor is recently updated, and although it was a bit bland for my taste (I prefer a smoky old historic pub with the beams showing) it was clean and welcoming. The food overall was good to very good - pub classics done well. The lamb rump was a bit small, but nicely pink and very tasty. The ale pie was quite moist with good pastry and a gravy that had more going on than just being salty, and the fried foods (chips, onion rings, fish) were bright and crisp. The only miss in the meal was the fish batter, which was quite gummy. Throughout the meal the service continued to be just right - attentive without being intrusive or annoying. Our total for two adults and two kids was £76 - well worth it, and would not hesitate to return.

Had not been here for some time and booked for lunch. On arrival managed to secure a parking place in the front car park. Were directed to the bar/restaurant, but waited a little while to be acknowledged at the bar, in spite of a number of staff passing by. We were finally shown to our table and provided with menus, which included a good selection of choices. It was also confirmed that dietary restrictions could be catered for. The food quality was very good and observing the portion sizes, we were glad that we selected sandwiches and smaller options. The table service was friendly throughout the meal and the costs were reasonable.

Meet our friends in the bar we waited a good 10 minutes to order drinks at our table. Menus arrived three of the party decided on mushroom stroganoff with added beef (supplement £4 each) when the stroganoffs arrived we told the waiter we had asked for the added beef his reply yes it has the added beef after some discussion he brought extra beef and reduced the whole bill by 20% not what we expected at a hotel of the Boars Head Quality

We had chosen fish 'n chips. The fish was dry, the batter too wet. The fries were overcooked and I honestly don't know what the mushy peas were made out of. Inedible. And all this for quite a hefty price. When I went in to get another drink from the car, I suddenly got the soda water in plastic which I didn't accept. We had our drinks all along in glasses. The woman behind the bar (I presume the landlady) said to the young barman oh for godsake give her the soda water in a glass otherwise we won't hear the end of it. Yes, you read that correctly. My friend had a similar experience when she went in. We will not be back; we will have coffee and lunch at the castle instead.

A step back to civilization. A little drive from the motorway and town. From the moment we stepped in we were greeted with a very friendly smile. My sister in law had booked via an online service and we weren't allocated rooms close to each other, but the receptionist changed that as soon as she found out the 3 rooms were for one family. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and had large seating chairs. We're from the tropical Caribbean and I greatly appreciated that they had already turned on the heating. The bathroom had an electric towel rack, so you won't have a hot shower followed by a cold towel. An important side effect of the electric towel rack is that the tiled floor and the toilet seat are warm even when you get up in the middle of the night. The breakfast was great. They cater for all tastes. Three of us had vegan food and my two brothers in law had non-vegetarian food and we were all very satisfied. I can certainly recommend the Boar's Head Inn to anyone. And the village of Ripley is very peaceful. All the residents we met were very polite and welcoming. I'll end my review exactly as I began: this place is a step back to civilization.

Stayed here a couple of weeks ago and couldn't recommend it enough. The location is picturesque and typical of a quaint British albeit wealthy countryside village, with a village store, art dealer and plenty of places to have ice-cream! Oh, and of course it has its very own castle nearby too! The hotel room itself was extremely cosy and quintessentially British in the best way possible, but with a modern bathroom. The food, meanwhile, was good, but not fantastic. Portion sizes are always going to vary from place to place, but there did seem to be inconsistency in amounts based on what dish you chose. My wife's starter was piled high, whilst mine was meagre; the cheese beefburger, too, was quite dry for my typically unfussy palate, especially where burgers are concerned! The full English breakfast, though, was delicious. The staff were fantastic and very welcoming and helpful, and the general atmosphere was chilled and relaxing. Just what we needed, and what we had hoped for when we booked, to be honest. I wouldn't say there's an abundance of "things to do" in Ripley, beyond the castle and grounds obviously, but we did enjoy walking around the main village and just enjoying that old British vibe thing I mentioned earlier. Harrogate is only down the road, too. Even though it's adjacent to a busy main road, we still felt disconnected from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day society, and that in itself is priceless, for me at least. Finally, just a word on accessibility. It wasn't an issue for us, but I'd be mindful to flag for anyone with mobility concerns to raise it early with the hotel. It is obviously an old building and designed without mobility in mind, but I know for a fact that my grandad would have struggled climbing the steps to reach our hotel room! The climb from the bathroom floor to the bathtub was also quite steep, weirdly. Not sure how a wheelchair user would gain access anywhere either, though again I would think the staff have provision (I just didn't see it during my visit). Other than that, a wonderful place to visit and definitely will be looking to go again in future.

Disagree with the last couple of reviews as we regularly go to this lovely restaurant and are very rarely disappointed. The food is very good and competitively priced for Harrogate area. The wine is a touch too pricey. And would be nice to have more white wines by the glass. Viognier is becoming more popular we find. The staff are great and happy to put any valid problems right. A lot of customers can be seen there regularly. Can recommend the pie night on Thursdays, Sunday lunch, Fish and chips, Fish Pie, the lamb is delicious, the slow cooked beef and ale pie is very popular.

Came across this when tootling round North Yorkshire- it’s a country pub (with rooms) overlooking a cobbled square next to Ripley Castle ( there’s a pay and display car park through the castle entrance , you don’t have to be visiting the castle). Decided to stop for a bite to eat which turned out to be a good move- we had two of the mushroom and pine nut rarebit starters followed by steak and ale pie for me and Korean chicken burger for my better half, all of it was great and we’ll definitely be returning.

The room was on the 1st floor facing the front of the building overlooking the church which was lovely but not sure I would want that in the summer would be very noisy with people sitting underneath the window drinking. Booked Sunday lunch as we hadn’t been for ages and needed somewhere convenient. Restaurant was not very busy although lots of people drinking outside as it was a nice day. Decided to pass on starters which turned out to be a good move. We had 3 roast dinners and 1 Club Sandwich which came with a cup of chicken soup for some reason and with some burnt edges to the toast. The meat on the roast was over-cooked and dry, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puds were over-cooked as well. Unlike the veg which was overly crunchy. No apple sauce on the plate even though the waitress said there was. Swimming in gravy which is fine if you wanted it (1 of us didn’t but had no choice). A lot of food was left uneaten. We were obviously disappointed and were offered a complimentary desert - we turned it down. Worst of all no apologies for serving a very poor meal. We won’t return.

My friend and I came for lunch recently. We were very disappointed with our food.I had the goats cheese tart with beetroot, but the pastry casing was rock hard and the filling dry and unappetising. My friend had the lamb, which she said was very tough. The 'dauphinois' potatoes were a small square of solid potato, bearing no resemblence to the description and the few accompanying vegetables barely warm. The pudding we shared was quite nice, but the coffee cold. We did point out our concerns to the waitress who offered a replacement, but we'd waited nearly an hour already. At the end of the meal we expressed our disappointment to the waitress, when presented with the bill. She went away to see the manager and returned with a 20% reduction on the price. This we accepted - although we'd have happily paid full price had the meal been worth it. It's interesting to note that the manager was conspicuous by his absence during all this - perhaps not wishing to alert the few other diners of our complaint?

We ate dinner in the Boars Head restaurant, although really it’s more of an understated gastro-pub. Good beers, good (but not perfect) service, excellent food in generous portions. We thought it was good value too, The Rump of Lamb was superb. I’m a big lamb fan and have eaten lamb in so many places and this had to be amongst the best. We arrived with high hopes having had great dining here previously but were bitterly disappointed. I’m never impressed when presented with food I could prepare myself in a few minutes and this applied to both our starters. Likewise the main courses weren’t brilliant with the feta and chickpea fritters being heavily over smoked - I still had the aftertaste 2 hours later. Not likely to return unless things substantially improve.

First course very good. Roast was tepid, tough and unappealing. The receptionist was a little less than polite but the Covid safety measures very good. We ate in the bar area which is not terribly inviting though ok as we were opposite the bar and watched the barman doing his thing. The starter we had was salmon fish cake. Very nice and well presented. We should have stopped there. I had the beef which was pinkish and very tough and my husband had the pork which was a little better. Both were Luke warm, even the gravy which was poured out on your plate whether you wanted it or not. The starter was £9. I think the roast was £15.Outside this place is very nice in a lovely village. Sadly, despte occasional visiting to The Boar's Head, in the delightful North Yorkshire village of Ripley, these days I find that I often leave disappointed. The staff are all pleasant, quick, efficient etc...but the kitchen is very sluggish and the food borders on the 6/10 mark. We waited 35 mins for our smoked salmon starter and it really isn't good enough. It's the location and the style of this place that somehow makes me forget the things that disappoint. So I seem to return in hope.

Smiling, cheerful, helpful staff, beautifully comfortable big bed and lovely bed linen. Super bedroom in the main building. Free entry to the castle grounds for guests, a leisurely walk around the lake in the late afternoon to build up an appetite for a scrumptious dinner. Enjoyed the locally made gin in the bar, the dinner menu offered plenty of choice and breakfast will keep you going until tea time! Highly recommend and would be very happy to go back for another long weekend.

Food was cold, no stuffing, hard parsnips, cold plates and tasteless gravy. Toilets also dirty with no toilet roll. No excuse considering we were first sitting, how was the food so cold? I've had good food here before but was very disappointed with the Sunday carvery on this occasion, especially as it was a family celebration. Reluctant to go back.

We waited a short while for a table but it was definitely worth the wait, we sat outside with a great view of Knaresborough viaduct the tide was too high for boating on the day we visited but I imagine it would be lovely to spend an hour on the water on a good day The menu was varied with something for every taste we both had a delicious Tuna toasties which came with a salad garnish and crisps, they had a selection of beer and wine to choose from as well as delicious coffee and cakes we had a very enjoyable couple of hours sitting watching the world go by, definitely one to visit if you are in Knaresborough

I had a birthday party here on Saturday, staff couldn’t have been more helpful they let me get there an hour and half earlier to set up some decorations, they set up all the tables for me already, let my bring my own speaker, very fast service bringing down all the drinks, we stayed past closing time and no one even bothered us because we were having so much fun 🙈, special mention to Hannah for organising so much and Oliver for clearing up after us, I will be back to host more parties xx

Not gluten free or coeliac friendly. Thad a strong reaction after eating there. Vomiting, total diarrhoed and had to spend rest of the day in bed. I had made them aware of my needs, and rang afterwards. They said they would look into it and get back to me.....but nothing! Need reporting. Don't claim you do gluten free, if you don't.

Stopped off for Drunch .. late lunch early dinner as it was 1530 .. we had the set lunch menu which had plenty of options.. 2 courses for £18 each. Sat on the terrace with our dog. The food was excellent & freshly cooked with proper serviettes. Service excellent & the interior of the bar area was spotless as were the toilets.. which living in York to find all the above at such a great price is nigh on impossible. Would throughly recommend & will be going back. Wish the owners would open somewhere in York 😀
