We had a very disappointing experience. We had chosen the restaurant to meet up with friends for lunch. When we arrived it seemed we were expected for tea - at 1230. Despite email confirmation for lunch and mentioning a menu choice. The lunch menu is light meals only, but even so the food was unappetising and poor. A big let down despite the smart grounds.

Had an afternoon tea voucher as a gift for my wife and it was very pleasant sitting inside overlooking the extensive grounds (we would have sat outside but unfortunately the weather wasn’t conducive). The sandwich and cake tier had a good selection of goodies (see my pic), with a choice of teas/coffees to accompany. Service was attentive but discrete.

Visited the Tudor Restaurant for afternoon tea using a Wowcher voucher. Fantastic quality and worth every penny. Having experienced it, I would have gladly paid the full price. We were welcomed by a very pleasant young lady who showed us to our table overlooking the hill down to the lake. She offered us tap water which came in a carafe with ice. So much better than some places who rip you off immediately with overpriced bottled water. The tea came with unlimited tea and coffee, and our deal also came with a glass of proseco each. The waitress was very helpful and checked all was well and brought back extra tea when we requested it. The tea was superb, and the chef even went to the extra trouble of writing "Happy Birthday" for my wife on a side plate written in chocolate, with three extra cakes. A lovely touch. We had 4 x 2 rounds of delicious finger sandwiches, and as I had warned them my wife doesn't like cheese, the selection was all non-cheese with lovely, salmon and cream cheese, cucumber and cream cheese, ham and pickle and finally egg and cress. The sweet selection consisted on two scones each with a generous portion of clotted cream, two pots of strawberry jam, then s selction of fantastic little cakes. Boy were we full! It was 5 Star (I'd have given 6 star were it available). We will return but not for a while as I think we'll both be full up for quite a time yet! Thank you to all concerned. Mega brownie points from my wife!

Evening didn’t start well with no one behind the bar to have a pre dinner drink. Eventually served and took drinks into restaurant. No one to greet or show to table. Decided to find our own table to sit. Waited and finally someone came round with two menus ( 4 of us so we had to share). Finally a server took our order but was very unsure of sauces… apparently no sauces for steaks. Steaks arrived half an hour later with no option for side sauce - very dry and not cooked to our request. Two had fish which was ok but bland. Waited another half an hour for desert menu. Deserts were good but forgot one so waited another 15 minutes for that. Very understaffed with long delays sadly. Lovely setting though.

I ordered pumpkin gnocchi, and what came was dry blobs of mash potato with Brussel sprouts?! No pumpkin in sight and when I asked if it's meant to come with sauce, the waitress pointed at my dry plate and said it was already on there. My partner ordered red trout with vermicelli and got salmon on ramen. The white wine was also warm. Despite being February, half the things on the menu were clearly Christmas leftovers out of the freezer with no chef in sight! Haven't had a meal that hilariously awful for a very very long time!!

Not really more than average. I was really worried having read some recent reviews that this would be awful and it wasn’t awful but it just wasn’t any good either. Some positives: The kids menu is good and great value at £1 when adults are eating. The service was quick (but a bit too quick really for a nice family meal) The negatives: Cheap glassware - nice glasses can be bought for such a reasonable price now, nowhere should have those hideous wine glasses and water jugs. Certainly nowhere that charges over £15 for a main!! Food was cold and definitely not freshly cooked. We had turkey escalopes and they were reheated, I’m sure of it. The side of chips were freshly cooked and were hot but the meals were just too quick and too cold to be freshly made. The waitress wore the same pair of blue gloves throughout the meal which looks weird and must be less hygienic than not wearing gloves? The children’s sundae is an exaggeration. It was cheap vanilla ice cream with off squirty cream and a few smarties sprinkled on top. Neither of my children ate theirs which I don’t think has EVER happened! The haddock scotch egg, whilst the egg was cooked perfectly there was no haddock?? The service was just too fast (I know that sounds crazy) but we wanted to have a relaxing meal and it felt like the “blue gloved waitress” just hovered by our table to whip the plates away and move us onto the next course as quickly as possible. Maybe because the microwave had pinged with our next course!!! All in all this could be so much better. Either just be a pub with reheated grub and charge accordingly or actually live up to the meals you are promising. Would not return.

Wish I had read some of these reviews before booking. We could have had a better meal in the local pub. Not a meal that you expect from Haslemere’s premier location. Haddock Scotch egg that lacked haddock, but the egg was perfect. Very large pork chop which needed a bit more crackle perhaps. Pineapple that was fresh but not roasted and caramelised as described. Nothing that made it inedible but disappointed by the standard versus expectations from such a great location. Service was rather poor too, the waiter was attentive and friendly but obviously let down by his waitress colleagues.

Dreadful Breakfast I was invited to meet someone for breakfast, ordered a simple mushrooms on toast with a poached egg. You would think that was simple for a 4 star hotel. Mushrooms were boiled I think (hard to tell, certainly not fresh) Toast was not toasted just soggy wet bread from the watery mushroom… exactly! One mushroom. One poached was decent. Very poor. Certainly not cooked by a chef

Am not sure where to start on how bad the food was, universally agreed by everyone. I ordered crab rarebit for starter. It was cheese on cheap breaded toast, and my wife thinks there may have been some crab paste somewhere. The menu for main did not appeal, so I took refuge in the steak. At £30, was hoping for something special. I prefer steak to be on the rarer side, but it was almost not cooked at all. My wife’s mullet was massively over cooked. My children, who eat everything, struggled with theirs. Our friends had mushroom pate, which was inedible. Throughout the meal, we had to ask for everything, at no time did the waiting staff (who were very friendly and pleasant when asked) do anything proactively. I am now going to sound like an utter wine snob. There were only four red wines to choose from, max price £28, which on my wine app normally retail at c. £9. No choice of wine, and the ones they had were not pleasant……but I am a wine snob! We had breakfast, and it did not improve. I think my bacon had been boiled! Looking around our table of 10 people, most left their bacon. Rest was ok, just not really tasty. In summary, other reviews have been complimentary, but on our evening, the chef should not have been proud of what was being served….and the wine list is woeful.

Stayed overnight and we were looking forward to a yummy dinner but we hit the kitchen on a bad night which is a shame as the front of house staff were superb. We recognise things are a bit different but this is the first time we’ve ever sent entire dishes back and we weren’t the only ones. We took all 5 “nibble” plates as a mezze starter between the 2 of us and a decent bottle of Sauvignon, all great except the pigs in blanket which were weirdly sweet. Portion sizes larger than we anticipated. But then the mains came and things went wrong. Meatloaf was dried out/burnt around the edge; completely inedible. Halibut steak in grenobloise sauce was dry/over cooked and the sauce was bright green & bitter - poss too many capers? Hubby bit into a large bone which put us off the whole dish. The asparagus was poor - 3 of the 4 pieces were so thick/hard you couldn’t cut them. New potatoes undercooked/hard. To be fair they didn’t charge us for the mains as we didn’t eat them, I wouldn’t expect anything less but that wasn’t the point. It spoiled what had promised to be a lovely leisurely dinner and seemed wasteful. The table next to us sent their steak and chips back as everything was undercooked and a 3rd table had issues of some sort too. Based on our experience and that of our fellow diners I would be wary of eating here again. Finished off with desert and cocktails outside which were great. Friendly front of house staff. Only 1 chap wore a mask which we appreciated.

Aside from the lovely hotel grounds, the afternoon tea was generally poor. Staff were lack lustre and were not appropriately presented for such a setting, and even began ironing table cloths next to us whilst we were eating. As a large party I know it can be difficult to cater for so I was very impressed by the service recieved. We were a little late for our booking but the staff had no issues about this and were friendly and polite. The menu is a little limited but there is also the option to choose from the lounge menu which caters for the majority of tastes. The food was well cooked and presented and very tasty, the service was excellent. Triple cooked chips are a must have!! Breakfast was a little chaotic due to the sheer amount of people, a wedding party and a couple of hen do's were present but overall a good selection, and tea and coffee served direct to the table. The only issue was bread for the toast machine running out and a large queue. Afternoon tea was great value for money, endless amounts of speciality teas and coffee, warm freshly baked scones with jam and cream, delicious soft sandwiches and small cakes. Plenty per person, so able to take home in a box if not eaten.

it's a 4 because the food, particularly the mains were really lovely..the mushroom consomme to start was very small but the dish it was served in raised a smile. The heavy, but tasty, duck confit was served with light and fluffy brioche..for me this didn't fit together but the team did get us some different bread on request...the pheasant dish was AMAZING, the artichoke that was served with this was a superb addition.. the Seabass was also lovely and tasted fresh..both mains were worth a 5. We then shared a English cheese board, cheddar, brie and a Stilton... unfortunately all served straight from the fridge... we wrapped this up and took it home, it was room temperature by then and lovely... for me if the 'free' bread had been served warm and there was perhaps a palate cleanser after the starters and the cheese had been served perfectly this would be a roaring 5.. all day long! It's the small things chef..

My booking had been taken the day before for 12:30, Sunday cavery for four. On arrival there was no record of the booking on the system so we're asked to wait whilst they set a table. Our table was in the bar area even though the restaurant had many suitable tables that remained empty for the duration of our visit. We had to ask where to go for the carvery and we're taken through, after waiting a few minutes my son had to go and ask for someone to serve us only to be told that the chef was busy and would be with us shortly. The carvery was average with a good selection of vegetables. After eating and resting for A considerable time we had to ask for our table to be cleared and ordered desserts. Sticky toffee pudding eventually came, luke warm and tasteless, to be honest a supermarket microwaveable pud would have been better. Customer service was nil, after payment we were asked if everything was alright with our meal and we're given a vague apology and as an excuse about the booking that they are changing their systems over.

We had been here before about 5 years ago. Back then the food was very good quality, a bit special then, but sadly the food was not so good this time. Out of a quite limited menu there were several things not available which made choosing the food quite difficult as the options were very narrow. Considering the limited menu and the fact it was early on a Saturday night I don’t think there’s much excuse. There were also substitutions, my artichoke starter was supposed to be served with caramelised onions but came with a load of warmed bottled silverskin onions on it. They were horrible and definitely not caramelised.

I was expecting a large hotel "feel" instead of which we were treated to a delightful carvery in a very old building full of charm and atmosphere. The room was full but we didn't feel cramped in the slightest and there are numerous nooks and crannies that had tables in them. The food was plentiful and good and was frequently replenished so one didn't have veg, etc that had been hanging around for hours. (There were other choices if one didn't fancy the carvery, I should add.) I am definitely returning in the future and highly recommend it.

Lunchtime club sandwich revolting. Fish and chips in the evening much better. Wine list reasonable/ Best part by far was the lovely friendly waitress.

I have no idea what management are doing, but the quality of food is terrible. Food which should have been served hot was cold. Puddings taste as if they are store bought. Your cheesecake is so similar to the one from Waitrose...Service is nothing special.

Good food and good service. I had tartar and carrot salad - delightful. Followed by baked cod with clam broth, grilled courgettes and samphire - amazing! Panna cotta with compote - nice and light. The man in charge was very polite and friendly. Breathtaking view from the restaurant.

I stayed at the Lythe hill hotel for two nights. The first evening the food was very tasty and the staff were very friendly. The next morning at breakfast I found the staff very rude and incompetent and the buffet was mediocre. If the staff were well mannered at the breakfast this would of been a 4 star review, likewise would of been 1 maybe 2 if it wasn't for the evening previous.

We visited the restaurant today (Easter Sunday) for lunch for my nan's 90th birthday. This place perfectly met all our needs and exceeded expectations. We wanted something a bit special, in beautiful surroundings and with good quality good value food for a large family group. That's just what we got, plus the staff were really accommodating. They had placed us in a really nice spot for my nan, with views out over the lawn and the woods, lent us vases so that we could do extra table decorations and let us go to town on it with balloons. The lunch was a Special offer (£20 a head adults, £10 a head children) three course carvery. Fantastic value. The place has character, and is very clean and professionally run. Everyone is keen to return for our next family do! Thank you Lythe Hill.

My husband and I visited for a midweek lunch. The hotel is under refurbishment, so a certain amount of disruption is to be expected. The sign however to the Restaurant, pointed us to an area for only staff members to enter. The grounds are stunningly beautiful. The interior of the restaurant is decorated tastefully & to a very high standard. Such a shame, that there was just the 2 of us having lunch, for the whole hour and a half we were there.I had booked the 2 course, £25 lunch for 2, as advertised on the website, over the phone. Although what we had was beautifully presented, 2 of the main course choices were in fact beef/horseradish or cheese/tomato sandwiches! The Sausage & Mash my husband had was plentiful and excellent quality. The menu's we were given were typed on plain A4 white paper, a bit worn, which I felt let down the otherwise plush surroundings. The toilets are very well kept, also decorated to a high standardOverall, we both felt the service, surroundings were first class. The actual choice on the 2 course set menu, let us down badly

Came here for Mothering Sunday, unfortunately we were left so disappointed by the quality of food. The service could not be faulted; the staff are exceedingly welcoming and really do provide a wonderful service. However, the food.Sunday lunch was a carvery style sitting. With starters, mains and desserts served in a help yourself fashion (bar the carving of the meats). When we were getting our starters, I couldn't help notice that the desserts were already out, uncovered and not refrigerated. I would have thought that for food safety, these should have been properly kept. The mains were lukewarm. From the meats to the vegetables - everything felt like it needed to be heated up! Eating lukewarm potatoes and parsnips is not my idea of an enjoyable meal. It's a real shame; but I felt as if everything had either come up too early or been out too long.Overall a poor experience.

I came here with my boyfriend and had a really nice dinner and wine in the restaurant. It had a lovely romantic feel, restaurant is beautifully designed. We were served by Raz and he gave us top service! Food was very well presented! We had breakfast here in the morning, which was a buffet style but very nice and fresh with a good choice, you won't be leaving hungry! Look forward to coming back!

But actually very nice. The food here has got much better under the new ownership, so if you've been in the past and been disappointed, try it again. The interior is still a bit boudoir, with crushed velvet chairs and audacious wallpaper, but great views over the pond and fountain make up for it. We've been for a Sunday roast twice and not been disappointed. The sticky toffee pud is also exceptionally good!

The Hotel has just been totally refurbished and a good job they have done too. Rooms are comfy and spacious and the welcome was excellent (after a long day these things matter).Service and food in the restaurant top notch (even accounting for relatively high prices). Good work Lythgoe Hall.

The Christmas lunch was buffet style like a carvery not suited to fine dining! The starters were a surprise because it was the only area where the food was very good with lots of choices. Otherwise food very mediocre. They really MUST up their game. Listen to your Customers!!!

The food was to a good standard but had hoped for a more varied menu. We were told this was a temporary menu. The waiting and bar staff were excellent. The décor beautiful. We had a lovely afternoon tea overlooking the lake beautiful views. Generous portions. We would definitely return

Visited the hotel with an open mind given its recent face lift. The cost of its restoration is wildly scary. The restaurant is small, yet well decorated and welcoming with its light and open plan seating area. They have maximised the space well. The view is lovely across the paddock and can imagine how beautiful it must be with a sunset on the horizon. The staff are right up to scratch and are vary happy to welcome you in to their world. The food was vary quick to arrive however I'm not fussed on its speed after all if I wanted fast food the nearest McDonald's is only a 15 minute drive down the road. The food then was to taste average the chicken was moist but lacked the kick I thought it may have. And was about a minute or two away from being cold. Now I understand that the group of friends and work colleagues I came with sat down and ate around 3-3:30pm ish which is an awful time for a customer to come in and eat for anyone who knows the catering business. As usually most staff are having a well deserved break which as it transpired was the case when we sat down to eat. So I don't blame them in the slightest in fact I'd be happy to recommend The hotel for a meal out. Come to think of it if you eat at sensible time like any normal person should do (12.00pm-2.00pm, 6.00pm-9.00pm) then I'd suspect it would be be fantastic with both the kitchen and restaurant at full working capacity. Defiantly worth a visit this Christmas, just from the look of the menu!!

The views from the window are lovely and the staff were friendly and efficient. It wasn't their fault that we were the only people in the place on a mid week afternoon, so it lacked a little in atmosphere but the afternoon tea with a glass of something sparkling was very good and we had a lovely relaxed afternoon.

Absolutely desperate to find somewhere to eat with good basic pub food. Guildford has loads of different eateries / cafés / restaurants but all with a lack of gluten free dishes in spite of reviews. Then we found the Star Inn. Spot on! Ham, egg and chips and hunter's chicken. Just right for the occasion! The staff were friendly and welcoming and the pub has a pleasant atmosphere. It is in a very convenient situation at the foot of High Street.

Fabulous for a Sunday Lunch all either local and/or british products. From the meat to the vegetables & fruit everything is sourced as locally as possible. For me that is a BIG PLUS of this restaurant and I truly believe what OUR farmers can produce way outshines what is imported. Field to plate in 48 hours! Sorry, no photos, I just enjoyed the company I was with and the delightful food which was all beautifully presented.
