The White Horse in Waverley

Amazing Sunday lunch, full of flavour. Delivered in a good amount of time considering how busy they looked. On the day we visited the weather was average to say the least but the garden looks very welcoming. I choose the roast beef and my partner the wellington, had she not been trying being a vegan then we would have gone for the sharing roast! No doubt we will sample once she gives up on veganism! A lovely pint of Shere Drop alongside Youngs. Will be back soon!

Fantastic meal in a wonderful, old pub with great atmosphere. Sunday roasts were excellent with plentiful trimmings. Our vegetarian family members were very well catered for and everyone enjoyed their meals. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, and they helped to make this special occasion a most memorable one.

Until the weather warms up this pub is more a restaurant. Almost the entire indoor space is set up as tables for dining, whilst the substantial garden area at the back looks perfect as an outdoors drinking area. It’s a Youngs pub, with just one guest beer (a local one, as it should be), so be prepared. As with every other pub in the area, Sundays mean Sunday Roast special menus. If that’s not what you’re looking for, then I found that the White Horse menu offered a little more variety and at keener prices than the others I looked at before booking our table. You might smile, but we both ended up ordering the beef burger. It was well stacked with added ingredients and nicely cooked, coming with a generous portion of French fries. We’d shared a starter, and whilst we might have enjoyed something from the dessert menu, we simply hadn’t got enough room in our bellies. Our servers were surprisingly cheerful and welcoming in spite of clearly having had a very busy Sunday afternoon service. Everything was delivered to the table in good time, and every request was met in good order. Well done Team White Horse, we’ll see you again.

The main course I ordered was listed as have mushy peas served with it. When it arrived I could not see any so asked the server if they had been forgotten. He replied that they were on my plate. He was correct but the amout was so small that I missed them. I estimate that the volume was one desert spoonful and equal to the small bowels of sauce. To his credit he did then serve me an additional amount which was satisfactory. One of my party ordered Pavlova but unfortunately it was not made in the tradational style but was solid and nothing like a 'normal' Pavlova. He could not finish eating it and opted for a coffee. Generally, the food was acceptable but I expected better from a situation that was supposed to be enjoyable. Our server was polite and helpful.

We had a wonderful lunch. The fish special of the day is always great, and my whole plaice was cooked perfectly. New potatoes with wild garlic were absolutely delicious. Service is faultless. Highly recommend.

Booked to have a Sunday lunch at 6.30pm but the meal overall was poor. The potatoes and vegetables tasted like they had been reheated, I asked for the beef to be medium but it came medium rare at best and was not tender. The food was overpriced for what we had. The service was fine but when we informed them about the quality of the food there was just an apology. Very disappointing and won’t be eating there again in a hurry.

Having been out for a circular walk around the village, 6 of us had booked into the White Horse for lunch. Definitely a good decision, the food was delicious and the service attentive. Everyone enjoyed their meal, the only tiny detraction was the small cheese plate my friend ordered - the price versus the serving amount was out of kilter, we did mention this to them at the time so maybe it will be different when we go again, which we definitely will.

Come here with another couple for Sunday lunch. Our starters were very good indeed, although the pea and mint soup was a delicious pea soup but not much mint. Mains were fine if not especially noteworthy. The yorkshires were the best bit, being light in both taste and texture. The mixed roots were very like a frozen supermarket mix though. The beef was mostly very good and the beetroot wellington was nice. We didn’t fancy any of the desserts, none of which came with custard - very odd for a pub menu. Service was friendly and efficient. Would I come here again? Not sure to be honest.

This is our local pub, and we decided to go for Sunday lunch. We received a warm welcome and were seated quickly. After sitting down, a staff member asked if we would like a bottle of tap water which we accepted. Then come the lunches! We both had a roast dinner - chicken for me and beef for the other half. When they arrived, the dinners were huge. The meat was cooked well, the vegetables were perfect and crispy. I couldn't finish my dinner, so one of the staff took my plate and placed the remaining in a takeaway container for our dogs - they were both extremely happy about this. Thank you to all of your fantastic, polite and friendly staff. We will definitely return soon.

Great food, staff and a lovely pub to visit

My booking was confirmed on email. I got a text the day before to confirm. There were 7 adults, two digs and a baby in a pram. We were warmly welcomed, and shown to our table. Location could have been a little better, with the pram, but it was Easter day and busy. The staff were very attentive, taking orders, and not to long a wait for food. Allergy advice was given on request, which was helpful. The food was nicely presented and delicious. We had a really lovely visit, and appreciated all the staff did to make us comfortable abd able to enjoy prescious family time on this special day. Thank you all staff members for a really enjoyable visit. We will be back.

We had the T bone special which was delicious. Didn’t get a 5 as the triple cooked chips weren’t fully cooked. The staff were very lovely and the team did their very best for us including bringing forward our booking as we arrived early from our walk.

The White Horse is well and truly back to its very best. It did go through a dip a while back, but has been excellent for sometime now and is better in terms of food and service than when it was in private hands.

Lovely country pub. Really good quality fresh food. Whitebait was delicious, fresh and much bigger than your standard whitebait in other pubs. Weekly specials, amazing Sunday roasts, regular food events. Will be amazing in Sumner as garden is big and beautiful. Sadly this pub has changed since our last visit. The service was indifferent, no smiles or welcome. The starters were good. Whitebait and Mushrooms on toast. We then had a gap of 45 mins. The main courses were poor. The pork belly was over cooked & dry. The Plaice was tasteless. The chicken salad looked limp and the vegetarian beetroot Wellington was overcooked. The veg was a sauté of small pieces . All in all very disappointing.

Very slow service. Lots of staff?! Our order not correctly written down one sent back and another missing so then ate at different times. Lots of chasing just to get our drinks brought to table. Disappointing.

Gorgeous pub! We came for a vegetarian tasting menu and they made a special vegan version for us which was exceptional, 5 course including sun dried tomato mousse on tuille, mushroom parfait, smoke aubergine and homemade praline truffles. All diners sat together as a communal table which was a great way to meet people and have a chat. Such a fantastic unique thing to have at a cosy local pub! Most of our fellow diners were not actually vegetarian and were equally impressed with the food. Tom managed the whole evening and looked after us so well, five star service! Our first time in the indoor restaurant. Between us we tried the fish pie, roasted miso celeriac and apple and fig crumble. All perfectly cooked and delicious. The restaurant was a bit quiet so not as cosy as it might have been otherwise, but the bar area and outdoor seating in the summer are always atmospheric. For a Friday evening in the summer you will not find a better spot for a pint / glass on wine and portion of perfectly cooked chunky chips, enjoyed in the early evening sun.

Although I have been a "Regular" at the White Horse for many years, I have to say something about this great pub. The current bar and waiting staff are exceptional and all fantastic, as are the others. Maia, Romy and Ronny are a great team and are always attentive, polite, great fun and a pleasure to meet. I can't imagine any other pub having such great people which is why I don't go anywhere else. I love them all. Richard

Sadly we had been coming to this pub for many years but since it has been taken over by Fullers the food has fallen very short of what it used to be. My husband left most of his roast and I had the vegetarian roast. The leeks felt like I was eating raw leeks, the “cauliflower cheese” was basically just burnt cauliflower there was no cheese in sight, potatoes were crisp on the outside and hard on the inside. I would give the roast a 5/10 at best under previous ownership I would have given it a 9/10. We thought okay we’ll give dessert the benefit of the doubt. Two completely burnt sticky toffee puddings arrived priced at £7.75 each pretty inedible. I complained to management who naturally took it off the bill but I felt embarrassed for them that they were serving it. I wouldn’t serve it if I was cooking at home. Needless to say we live locally and won’t be returning in a hurry or recommending to friends and family who are also in the area. There are other pubs locally like The Cyder House at Shakleford that won’t disappoint. The reason I gave the review 2 stars is because I cannot fault the staff or service at The White Horse or the location in any way.

Lovely relaxed pub, friendly team and extremely dog friendly, even in the restaurant which is rare to find. Have had several lovely family meals here and often stop by after a dog walk for a drink as the location is ideal.

I had Stovie to start with, a barley and potato soup, it was molten hot even after 10 minutes of blowing and stirring. On the other hand my wife had risotto which was luke warm. My wife's main course of a small skate wing and a crayfish sauce was not very filling, had to ask for some potatoes to make it more if a meal. We both had Raspberry cranachan for desert, it arrived in a half pint mug! But only filled the bottom inch of it. The last item of the Burns night meal was a wee dram of whiskey and it was a wee dram, just about covered the bottom of the glass.

Thoroughly enjoyable Burns night event. Piping in the Haggis, set Scottish menu and a few ‘Scottish’ extras which made it a fun evening. We all had different choices from the menu and each dish was delicious.

I absolutely love this pub! This is my favourite spot to meet up with friends for food and drinks all year round. Food, service and location is excellent. Had an absolutely excellent Sunday Lunch last weekend with some friends for a festive catch up. The beef was the best I’ve ever had and flooded with a really rich gravy and loads of veggies. Staff were perfect even though the place was packed! Tom talked us through wines to match our food and the food was delicious. The table next to us had a large sharing steak which looked incredible so we booked again for Christmas Eve for more amazing Sunday food and hopefully one of those steaks if there are any left!
