Came in for a couple of meals over the long weekend. First visit both had the Parmo, one being the spicy Parmo. Both very nice & extremely filling. Second visit on Steak night, 2 steak meals with a bottle of wine for £30. Had a side order of garlic king prawns which were very nice with the perfectly cooked steaks. The Resolution is consistently good value for money & the staff are great, you can always have a laugh with them.

Eaten at the Resolution many times before when staying in Whitby. Popped in for a meal with friends, we all had steak which was cooked just right & very enjoyable. Friendly efficient staff, reasonable prices, good food & pleasant surroundings. We were eating & drinking for quite a while but staff didn't hurry us even though we may of been a bit boisterous. Glad to see they cater for the kiddies including pictures & pencils for colouring. Will be back if they'll have us.

We stopped in here for a late lunch. The menu sounded great but when our food came up the dumb waiter, the bar tender gave it away to someone at the bar saying that it was going spare. We noticed it was exactly our order that hadn't arrived yet so we said something. They barely said that they were sorry and had to watch two guys eat our lunch while we waited for it to be made again. Awful service.

Came here on a Saturday and got the parmo offer. Coming from Teesside we ordered the standard. Prices were average and the food came fast. Presented really well and the chips were amazing. The parmo tasted fishy but I suppose were in Whitby so couldn’t complain! Amazing atmosphere inside and decor looked well. Loved the tropical fish tank!

Freezing cold day and we finally managed to park somewhere in Whitby, to find a lovely warm, relaxing, inviting room with a view of the abbey. Didn't eat here so not sure what food was like. One downside is that it sounded like the barrels were being changed at 7 in the morning, which was quite annoying.

We ate twice here during New Year week. Really lovely food, well presented, tasty, and in very comfortable surroundings. Good to see the booths still there though after the refurb. Not the cheapest prices, but you really do feel like you're getting quality food. The new addition of the marine fish tank is great, looks fantastic in the middle of the bar area. Bit bemused by the 1-star review below... this was not what we experienced at all.

Don't let it stop you - Resolution is very central , couple of minutes to the harbour along a nice shopping street. Good bar and beers.

We arrived at the end of the Gothsville Extravaganza weekend on a Groupon bargain deal. It is years since I have been to Whitby, and it is much, much better than I remember it. Finding the hotel wasn't too easy, but at least we saw a bit of the place as we went round again- and again. We arrived at the front door, and were stumped where the parking was. Turns out there are only a few W zone streets you can park in, but as a hotel resident, for 50p, you can park for several days- it was no problem in the end. Once you had your scratch card from your hotel. I must be honest my heart sank like a holed ship when I first saw the inside of the hotel. I told my husband not to expect much. The rooms reminded me of student rooms, but were clean and adequate, although no sea views. A bit souless. The hotel has that feel about it. Yet we were pleasantly surprised by the helpful, pleasant staff, and the quality of the food (keep that chef). We paid £69 for two for DBB, and we had a fantastic time. As I say we cannot praise the food enough-never judge a book by its cover. The average marking is for the feeling and the room quality, it would have been higher had they met the same high standard as the food. Would we go back- yes- with another good deal.

The hotel is handy for the sights of Whitby and although 'tired' in decor the breakfast was fine. We paid extra for a sea view but as this was literally a glimpse of water over rooftops we transferred rooms to one with an upgraded bathroom with a tv in it and a spa bath and that was ok. Staff were pleasant and obliging and we enjoyed our stay although there's certainly no wow factor!

We stayed at the resolution hotel for one night as part of a Groupon deal which included a 2 course evening meal and breakfast for £69. Although this seemed good value, we arrived to the most basic and underwhelming room which wasn't anything like those shown on the website. Asked at reception if any other rooms were available as we were hear for a special occasion but told the hotel was full. So we went for a drink in the bar which was uninviting and soulless. The food on the evening was nice enough but cannot call this a restaurant. The service is non existent. Tables aren't made up and you have to self serve knives and forks as well as drinks from the bar. We did meet some nice people and had a great time in Whitby so will be returning but unfortunately not at the Resolution.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon on a groupon deal for bed breakfast and two course evening meal, the lady on reception with red hair was very friendly and helpful with parking arrangements. Our room was clean and spacious but quite dated minus points being large gap under the door, one very large window blind missing but fittings still in place, burn marks on the carpet, most uncomfortable mattress I have ever tried to sleep on, awful view of the roof of the bar below, you could hear every time anyone flushed the toilet or ran a tap, sound of rolling barrels very early morning. Plus points clean, large room, spacious, nice clean linen, large bathroom with superb tv above the bath and jacuzzi. The evening meal I had a lovely lamb shank with mash and veg it was delicious and piping hot, my husband opted for the fish, chips and mushy peas and he said it was the best fish he has ever tasted with a light crispy batter but the chips looked amazing presentation wise but were cold, the ice cream was fine but had big lumps of ice in and my cheesecake was acceptable but clearly out of a freezer. The prices on the menu for this was roughly £35 which to us are restaurant prices as were the £10.60 for two glasses of average wine this is not a restaurant it's a bar with no designated areas for dining, the restaurant has no ambience and the lighting is all wrong and to be honest it is very dated and dirty looking especially the creased up net curtains to one side and the dusty tv. BREAKFAST!!! Great selection of cereals, toast, fresh juice and coffee, tea I opted for the full English it soon arrived but the sausage was full of gristle, the poached egg was hard as a golf ball, beans boiled to death, bacon ok and fried bread cold, my husbands salmon and scrambled eggs perfect and the main negative as both non smokers seeing three members of staff pop out with cig packets and lighters in hand for five minutes and then bring out plates of food without washing hands we find unacceptable, yes we know they haven't physically touched the food. Overall the staff were very polite, attentive, friendly. But the hotel had too many minor points that add to a major for us to recommend staying here even though we only paid £84 for bed, breakfast and two course evening meal .

Just visited last weekend and had a very enjoyable 2 nights at this hotel. Very pleased with room ( number 1 in the vault). Very clean, comfortable bed, tea making facilities, power shower with plenty of hot water. The only 2 negatives were the 2 sticky plasters holding down the steel flooring joins in the bathroom doorway to stop people catching their feet on it and we couldn't get the WiFi to work in the room. The hotel is in a very good location, near to all shops pubs and attractions. We enjoyed the steak night on Friday but this would have been better with real chips instead of frozen skinny fries. Husband had mixed grill with straw potatoes which were skinny strands of chips. Not very nice but steaks were good. Breakfast was very good. Full English, plenty of toast and cereals as well as various other options. All of staff were friendly and helpful. Not happy that we had to pay for parking at £7.50 per night- £15 all together. Normally there are 50p cards available from the hotel for street parking but the council had not issued any to the hotel. Typical especially as next week Whitby will be heaving on Gotham weekend. However i would recommend this hotel and will use it again in future

We went for two nights mid-week. Had a decent sized room and bathroom with a good view of the Abbey, which was lovely at night. Comfy bed, lift to upper floors, tasteful decor in the corridors (although the bar and dining area couldn't make up its mind if it was early Rome, flapper 20s or basic dark blue and 90s disco). The menu, though a bit limited, provided tasty, hearty food, well cooked and satisfying. Had the best sticky toffee pudding in my life! Drawbacks were small but added up to more than niggles: on both mornings I had to ask for crockery or cutlery; they take self- service a bit too far and could do more than simply deliver the plate of food (staff were friendly though); poached eggs were hard so next day husband made a point of asking for lightly done. Rock hard this time. But the worst was more serious: mould in and around the shower was horrible. There was no shelf for toiletries so had to use the top of the bin for toothbrushes etc. It would not take much to clean the mould but as the shower also leaked, I'd think more needed doing. Woken early both mornings by noise of bins or barrels being rolled outside but not the bar noise other reviewers mention at night so not too bad. Parking in Whitby is a nightmare so use Silver St at £5-50 for 24 hours but be prepared for minimum of £2 an hour in other places. There is lots of good in this hotel and I'd go again perhaps, so clearly has its plusses, just needs to tighten up on the details.

Stayed with wife on 10 - 12 October and were allocated room 210. The room was spacious and well equipped with a four poster bed, flat screen television, and good views across to the Abbey and a seaview. There was a large ensuite bathroom with jacuzzi bath and television,(a small criticism is that the bathroom could have done with some shelving on which to put toileteries). Our deal included bed, breakfast and a 2 course meal on one night of our stay. The quality of the ingredients and presentation of the cooked breakfast left room for improvement as it was apparent that the cheapest products were used. The evening meal was an improvement.Parking.....we knew this is limited in Whitby but we discovered by chance that if you obtain a 50p scratch card from the hotel, it entitles you to park in zones marked W for up to 4 days, we did this and it was great value parking nearby. The hotel is very well situated within walking distance of the harbour, the main streets, pubs, restaurants and the Abbey. The staff were friendly and helpful and overall we enjoyed our stay and thought it was good value for what we paid. Worth a visit on a Groupon deal.

I was disappointed overall with my experience at The Resolution. The food is ok, I ordered the Pie, which was a pot pie with very little filling but was passable. I think the main feedback is the portion sizes are very small. It need to decide if it's a restaurant or a bar. There were a few stains on the carpet from spilt drinks but other than that the room was clean and comfortable.Whitby is a lovely place to visit and this hotel is bang in the middle of it all within easy walking distance of the harbour and beach. My only disappointment was that it was my husbands birthday and after paying a fortune for 2 nights and then having to purchase breakfasts as well, I asked reception if they could maybes leave a cake or something in the room for our return at tea time as a celebration for his birthday but nothing happened. Oh well, it didn't spoil his birthday!Would I use this hotel again? Probably but I will look on groupon as apparently they offer deals for cheap rates. We were met at reception by a young lady who I can only describe as clairvoyan because she answered questions before we asked anything. We had arrived early and wanted to get a street parking permit that were available from local shops and businesses .Before we had the chance to say anything she said do you want to book in and carried on immediately by saying we'll you can't until 2 o clock. When I stated what I needed I got some garbled explanation of the parking system This I already knew but there was no stopping her. As ther where double yellow lines outside reception I asked where could I park to drop our bags off. The answer told me she hadn't listed to what I asked because her reply was you can bring them in here. No my car is not large but I thought it may struggle up the steps and into the narrow foyer. We made oil way to our rooms later to find a pleasant enough room but with only 1 beside cabinet or lift, a problem as both of us like to read. Apart from that the rest of the room was well furnished and pleasant. We went for an evening meal of fish and chips as we were in Whitby weren't we. I got about half a dozen over cooked chips and a fish, which teased nice had the merest suggestion of batter on itThis hotel is not a gourmets delight. Would we go again. Probably not. Stayed at Resolution on a groupon deal, and bearing that in mind I thought it was a decent place for what we paid. It's basically a large open style bar with some raised seating area, somewhat tired and dusty in appearance. The staff were young really nice all pleasant and friendly. I was very impressed that the manager took the time to ring us beforehand to advise us that the football was on that night and the kitchen was closing at 6pm, but a small remuneration would be given towards dining else where and a bottle of wine was offered as well. This was great as neither of us wanted to dine that early. The rooms are upstairs, lift and stairs accessible.Room was small basic and clean, and after the match all was quiet, in fact it is the most quiet night we have spent in a hotel. Breakfast was the usual cereal or hot and my eggs and bacon were OK. Gripe well our bathroom was badly in need of some TLC, dusty very hot as the electric radiator was permanent on, and the shower silicone was thick with black mould and the large gap in the pipe work boxing was black mouldy and wood louse were crawling in and out. Although the door envelope stated a night porter was on for 24hr access, I found it disturbing that the was no telephone to ring down if help was needed, or indeed any directions if such contact was required. These flaws aside I would try this hotel again, it is central for the shops etc, and the thoughtfulness of the manager and staff were great. As to Whitby gulls they screech all night never stopping ear plugs advisable, especially when needing to leave the window open on a muggy night.

It's a pub with rooms...... Well located near the centre of the town, on one of the many hills. No car park but on street parking may be found or failing that a nearby public pay and display, which at £7.50 per day was not too bad. Staff were really pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was very tasty, well-cooked and plentiful. The room was small but adequate, with a view, over the pantile rooftops, of the abbey and also the harbour - but no chairs to sit and enjoy it. The towels were huge, fluffy and sparkling clean - but the shower room was unpleasant with lots of black mould, and I had to get disinfectant wipes to clean splashes and dirty fingermarks off the bathroom door before I was prepared to go in there at all. It really put us off. It was very hot in the room when we arrived and we found that the electric radiator was on and set at 23 degrees. I bent down to adjust it but the keyboard was filthy. Out with the disinfectant wipes again. In the end we just switched it off. Wifi free of charge and pretty good. Huge bar, again with lovely staff, but my husband said the lager was not cold enough. More attention to cleanliness in our room would have made a big difference, along with some small comforts - bottled water, tissues, somewhere to put a wash bag or a toothbrush down in the bathroom....No, we wouldn't return.

Once we we were eventually checked in, our key card didn't work so we had to go back down to reception which was slightly irritating as I believe this was because the poor girl had too much going on at the same time. When we finally got in to our room (205) it was a bit of a let-down to be honest. There are stains on the skirting board under the window, there were crumbs on the bedside table from previous guests, bright blue and very strong bleach in the toilet and the room was far too hot. This was not a great first impression especially as it was suppose to be a treat for my partners birthday which I did stipulate in my booking.Dinner was a better impression I had the chicken breast with tarragon sauce vegetables and bubble and squeak fritter which beautiful, hot and arrived in reasonable time. My only criticism here is that they don't do cocktails which I found to be slightly odd and think they are missing a trick but we went out afterward and found a beautiful little spot on the harbour where they did make them. Sleep wise, it's very difficult to fall asleep if your room is at the front of the hotel as there seems to be some kind of constant generator noise which is off putting and very loud. In the morning it's a jolt waking up as roadworks were going on and the windows are sash, single glazing. The bed was comfy and was king size the pillows were great and not too soft. Woke up to it being stifling hot even though we had turned out radiator the day before so the window was immediately opened when we woke up. The best thing about the room was the shower although there was what appeared to be blood stains on the grout. The shower itself was huge and was the length of the wall the water hot and the pressure was powerful. The bathroom walls were grubby and had hair on them which was disgusting. Breakfast was continental and full English. Continental consisted of toast or cereal, would have been nice to have had some pastries and yoghurt. The full English comes with black pudding and tomato but if you ask to replace them with other items they are happy to do this. Upon leaving the hotel, as all the staff are "jack of all trades" both of them were serving in the restaurant so we're unable to give that last personal touch of a goodbye. The only reason I would stay again would be because of its location, perfect for walking around Whitby and everything you could possibly want to see and do is a short walks distance. Car parking is also just 2 minutes round the corner costing only £5.50 for 24 hours. All in all, an ok stay, don't go by the photos on the website and you won't be disappointed.

Stayed here this weekend really enjoyed it. Had a fantastic room on lowest level room 3 couldnt believe it was a standard room quite a plush bedroom with good deco, like the wood wall with a decent tv. The bathroom had two sinks and an amazing victorian style bath with power shower which filled up with very hot water in minutes. Lovely old style effects which suited the building. The breakfast options are good we chose the dearest at £5.95 which was full english with choice of how you want the egg cooked. Fruit juices, coffee, tea toast cereal unlimited all in with it . Not the best fry up in the world but without doubt fantastic value for money. The bar was ok with entertainment on both fri and saturday night and the staff were very pleasant. Great location 2 minutes walk down the road and your in the centre. Wouldnt hesitate to stay here again. The only down side was that the bed was too hard would have given very top rating otherwise. This could be because i think the room as been recently refurbished though. Whitby is a great place to visit with plenty of history and heritage.

We stayed here over night last week on a Groupon deal and had a 2course meal included in the price and also a breakfast.Food was unreal. Goats cheese and filo pastry starters husband has crab cakes. Both well cooked tasted great! Both had steaks perfectly cooked and chips in a basket was a lovely touch! Breakfast was perfect too. Been a while since we both had a full English where everything was done well! Would definitely come back when we visit even if its just for the food! So good!!

We went for a Sunday Carvery as recommended by our hotel that also serves food mainly because they also offer a very good vegetarian selection. The staff were great, carvery was very good with generous servings of meat. Give this place a go as from the outside it doesn't do itself much justice but inside is very good!

We had a lovely stay for 1 night in the Resolution Hotel. The room was clean and had everything we needed e.g kettle, tea making facilities, hairdryer, fan, extra blanket etc.We parked overnight in a car park 1 min away for £7.50.The bar on the evening was quiet but still a nice place to sit, although when we asked for a drink menu we were told there wasn't one and they didn't do cocktails (which is stated on the outside of the hotel). The breakfast was very nice, the quality and presentation were good. We liked the idea of teas, coffee, juices, cereals, toast etc which were included within the breakfast too.All the staff were very friendly. We would return to this hotel.

We stayed at the resolution last weekend and chose it based on the good reviews we have seen. Really struggling to understand how this bar with rooms (refuse to call it a hotel) has got good reviews. The 1 star we have given it is for the new decoration in some rooms and the fact that when we asked to change rooms (because of an awful mattress) the staff were very accommodating.Otherwise it was noisy with loud music both from the bar down stairs and 2 other bars in the area having loud live music until 11.30pm.The rooms were also pretty small with poor facilities. There was no lounge area for guests to relax and have breakfast - the only place to do this was the sole less bar with hard chairs. Not helped by the fact there wasn't even chairs in your bedroom to relax in.Breakfast was extremely basic with cheap bread and produce and no fruit/pastry choice. And finally we often had to push through the staff having cigarettes on the front steps to get in/out of the building.Needless to say we won't be returning!

We visit Whitby every year but have just discovered The Resolution. We visited with our 5 year old who was spoiled for choice with the junior menu which was very reasonably priced. The portion sizes are very big and the menu has a great range of choice and courses. The food is fresh and tasty. It's also nice to eat somewhere that's away from the hustle and bustle of the main street. A great find for us and one we will return to.

The bedding and towels were soft and white . We had a special offer of BB for 2 days & evening meal for 1 evening. The food and service were really good as were the drink quality and prices. Fantastic value so much so we returned with another couple 2 weeks later. Look forward to our next visit.

I visited here last week with my wife for some food. Had been recommended by a friend of ours who lives in Whitby. The place was quite busy but from what I could see there were 2 members of staff who seemed over run with everything. We waited a few minutes to order drinks while one was on the phone and the other was taking food to the table. We were finally served by a rather grumpy looking pink (I think) haired lady who didn't seem too keen to be at work. The other dark haired younger girl was running around trying to serve people, take food out, answer the phone which didn't seem to stop ringing while we were there. Obviously a sign of a popular hotel which makes me wonder why so little staff are expected to do so much. Very very poor management. The food was brought to us by the younger dark haired girl who could not have been more pleasant and friendly if she tried. Night and day between her and the other member of staff. The food itself was excellent. We both ordered steak and it was cooked perfectly. Will certainly be coming back. Just a shame the owners/brewery or whoever is in charge expect so much of so little staff. As I said earlier the phone did not stop ringing while we were there, and there was a constant flow of customers ordering food and drink. Far too much work for 2 people. Well done though to the dark haired girl who continued to smile throughout.

We stopped off in Whitby for some food. Came across this place. Inside it looked a bit run down in need of a refurb. However the food was delicious in comparison. The crab cakes were lovely, hubby had scampi which was equally delicious as were the triple cooked chips yum yum. The kids fish fingers and burger meals were also fab and the fish fingers looked home cooked. The kids loved it and it was child-friendly. Staff were also friendly. Surroundings and the old looking tatty menu could do with updating.

Was our first night in Whitby and we didn't know where to go, we came across this place and from the outside it looks ok so we went in. It was very dull with no atmosphere when we walked in, we ordered some drinks and looked at the menu and ordered food. I ordered a medium steak with peppercorn sauce and my boyfriend had lasagna. I'm 28 weeks pregnant so toilets anywhere are a must, the toilets were disgusting, the one with toilet paper has vomit all on the toilet bowl and seat and made me nearly throw up, the other had no lock on the door and the final one was out of order, wasn't impressed. I collected the cutlery and sauces and there were dirty plates all stacked up on the same counter, was pretty disgusting and unhygienic. The food arrived and my steak was rare, no one came to check if everything was ok, i can't really have rare meats because of the pregnancy, the sauce tasted like it had never seen a peppercorn it tasted like my food was swimming in hot cream and, my boyfriend ended up eating my meal whilst I felt nauseous. Upon clearing the table we weren't asked if the food was ok, i made a comment that the steak needed a bit longer in the pan for her to just go "ok" no deserts offered either, it was poor service, disgusting place and awful food

As regulars of the Sunday carvery we always enjoy our meal but unfortunately this week it was very poor, we arrived at 4 to be told they had nearly run out of veg but the young girl at the bar made enquiries and told us there was enough for us, this has to be the worst we've ever had! what little they had left was cold and disappointing, I would suggest it would be better to serve nothing rather than what we endured. The staff however are always lovely and Colin is a top chef and sorely missed on the floor

Only two teabags per day which seems a little mean but was our only fault find. We were told that they are refurbishing rooms too for next year. We will definitely be going back. Serious congratulations to the chef and food buyer. Well cooked, tasty and good quality. I have paid far more and not been as happy. Used to visited Whitby a lot as a kid, always wanted re visit as an adult so when I seen a Wowcher deal, I snapped it up. Lovely hotel room. Cannot fault the cleanliness of it. It was modern yet old if that makes sense and it was big!Only downside being in the basement room, i guess we had the bar/restaurant/ kitchen area above us and it was noisy with peoples foot steps, dropping things etc. Annoying really could do with sound proofing the ceiling because that was it's only let down for me. But I guess that's the reason for the Wowcher deal. The food was great really enjoyed it. The staff were helpful and friendly. Hotel is handy for everything, a great location. Would definitely stop here again on my next visit, with or without a Wowcher deal.I'd just request a room not in the basement.

We had the unfortunate "luck" of spending a night at this place. Got a "suite" under the creaky flooring of the pub with noise-channelling ventilation ducts overhead, a substandard kitchen with no cupboards and wobbly table, a toilet with no ventilation, exposed pipes and disjointed faucet and a door with no handle in sight... All this came with a delayed check-in and service that leaves much to hope for. While the rooms above the pub may make for a better night's sleep, there is little hope that could improve this establishment's culture of hospitality.
