The Red Lion Inn Deddington in Cherwell

We recently moved to Adderbury and were told that the Red Lion sold the very best Fish & Chips. We have just tried them for the first time for some take-away but were sadly very disappointed. Whilst the fish and the chips were good, the whole thing was ruined by the batter which was very under-cooked. We had to scrape all the batter off including a thick layer of uncooked flour mixture. If we had been eating in rather than take-away I would have sent it back. In summary it was the worst battered fish we have ever had.

Great proper pub with a good vibe. Had fish and chips there were really tasty. Hosts very friendly and helpful. Wish this was my local.

Great find in the lovely small town of Deddington. We ate the Salmon fishcakes with a salad and a shared portion of chips. Perfectly sized portions and very tasty fishcakes. This is a lively pub with plenty of space for outside dining and drinking. Aside from the fish menu all the menu items are plant based so great for vegetarians. Staff were very friendly and appears that we were wise to book as there were a good number of locals eating on a Wednesday evening.

Lovely pub, but outdoor non smoking seating doesn't really exist. There is a large white gazebo area which is the non smoking area, but immediately to the side of it are 2 smoking bench areas, so immediately people start smoking there, the gazebo becomes filled with cigarette smoke; not pleasant when we chose particularly to sit outside in the nonsmoking area.

This pub has a really nice atmosphere. We were made to feel very welcome and the food was delicious. The chef is very hands on and approachable . I felt that they really whether we enjoyed the food or not. It’s a lovely place to spend an evening.

2 night Travelzoo deal. Really well situated hotel in a pretty well serviced village. Hotel clearly undergoing some updating but did not detract from a lovely stay. Food was excellent and plentiful- both breakfast and dinner. Choice of breakfast impressive and freshly cooked. Staff, although under pressure and busy were very pleasant and helpful from reception to bar and restaurant staff with particular mention of Angelo and Adal who excelled. Very good value for money and we would return.

Disappointed after entering what is a nice characteristic pub with friendly and attentive bar staff. The menu was interesting with a variety of meals many of which are plant based. We choose the cauliflower and sweet potato curry and prawn curry . The former came out and the curry was cold, staff quickly took it back and said a new one would be cooked, the same plate was returned and was clearly reheated . Taste wise the food was ok. Within 3 hours of leaving my wife was having stomach cramps and throwing up into the early hours. Not an experience I would recommend more care clearly needs to be taken!

Been to Whitby,Grimsby, Harry Ramsden, Carvers in Scunthorpe in fact I am a fish and chip olic. I cannot find better fish and chips. How mad is that consider they ate miles from the sea.

A lovely village pub, with a cosy interior, welcoming friendly staff & surprising vegan-friendly menu. We made a one-off trip , specifically to try their vegan 'jack & chips' & it was 100% worth the drive! A huge piece of jackfruit 'fish' fillet in a crispy batter, served with a generous portion of chunky chips, mushy peas, tangy tartare sauce & fresh lemon. We also tried the battered sausage & onion rings on the side, both of which were nicely seasoned. Our food arrived in good time after we had ordered & everything tasted fantastic without being overly greasy/oily. We will definitely be visiting again - thank you!

Popped in for lunch at the weekend, as we are hoping to move to the area soon and were excited to see a mostly plant based pub! It didn’t disappoint. Huge choice for vegans, friendly service and lovely atmosphere! Will definitely be back.

Great early doors drink and dinner . Warm and very welcoming . Variable menu with numerous options. We were made welcome and the owner Garry spent time to explain the business ethics . I have recently moved to the area and have frequented the Red Lion many a time. The staff are polite and the owner, Gary is a great publican! The food served is plant based or fish, having chatted to Gary it was great to understand why he has chosen to do this. The food is fantastic and you cannot beat a nice bowl of chips and a pint after a win at the cricket! Nothing is ever too much hassle, an all round great place. Would thoroughly recommend a visit to anyone.

Best fish and chips you’ll find around oxfordshire - not greasy, good portions, fair price. Really friendly staff and friendly owner/chef. Done up really nicely and very clean. We look forward to many more dinners out here!
