My husband, daughter and I were visiting friends for a week in Shipston and this place became our second home. The building is really lovely- traditional and with a very pretty bar which is really cozy... perfect for dogs, kids and anyone wanting a good chat and a great pint (fab selection of ales and lagers). We loved the sofa in the corner for playing cards. I imagine it's super lovely when the fire is lit in winter. It's the garden that we loved most though.. there's a natural wig wam tree thing with kids stuff in so perfect for little ones. Lots of tables with an uninterrupted view of the rolling hills. They don't 'do' food but have a wood fired pizza oven that comes once every month and it was amazing! I think they have a similar thing with local fish and chips too. We were also there on 'sharing night' when the locals all bring in stuff like cheese and home made bread to share on the bar. All in all, this was a fantastic pub with great staff, a beautiful garden and a really charming, cozy bar. We will be back!

Loverly leg of lamb ciabatta sandwich with French fries and salad. I was going to have a pudding but I was full up. Spot on. Nice beer and atmosphere.

We were told that the fish and chips at this restaurant were legendary. We had a drink in the gardens before going inside for our meal of haddock chips and peas. The fish was beautifully cooked but the chips were not very good, looking like frozen chips. If the chips had been better the meal would have been excellent. The restaurant looked a little tired and the corridors which lead to the gardens were untidy. I understand that the pub has recently changed hands so maybe this will be sorted soon. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and it appears to be popular with the locals. Sort the chips out and we will visit again.

Myself and my wife with our dog's stayed hear for two nights. The landlord and lady were very friendly and welcoming. The pub itself was very traditional and the locals very friendly. We ate there both nights and the food was excellent. The accommodation was comphtetble. They also have a large garden for the dogs to run around in. Will definitely go back.

Having made the mistake of trying another local pub, I have to say The Gate and hail all who frequent it. Great Landlord, the best Hooky beer I know, great food and good value, great garden, where Ian grows his own for Anne in the kitchen, just sweet!

We stayed in a holiday let in Upper Brailes and found the Gate was a pleasant stroll down the hill. The landlord and landlady were very welcoming, even though we arrived late on a Monday evening when they were about to sit down to their dinner. The Hook Norton beers were well-kept and included an interesting special anniversary brew in a small barrel on the bar. The landlord was very knowledgeable about the beers - the brewery uses The Gate as a test pub for new brews. On Tuesday we returned for excellent fish (freshly delivered from Grimsby) and chips in the pleasant garden at the back. We were lucky enough to be there the first week of the month and every first Wednesday a wood-fired pizza van parks in the backyard and loads of folk come either to eat pizza there or to take it home. The pizzas were wonderful and the atmosphere very enjoyable as locals turned up to drink and chat while waiting for pizzas. On Thursday we could have gone back for 'hot chicks' - bbq chicken I gather - but had another commitment or we would have done so! There is a full menus as well as these nightly specials and everyone appeared to be enjoying their food. Strongly recommended. The dog was welcome in the bar where you can eat.

Staying in the area, this pub was recommended by the cottage owners so we nipped in. Lovely, tender steaks, a warm welcome, friendly locals and quick service. We have rebooked for Thursday.

Just popped in on the off chance for a lunchtime pint of Hook Norton as on holiday in the area for a few days. Met Ian the landlord who was very friendly and welcoming. The front bar was full of diners tucking in to amazing portions of fish and chips. Found out that there had just been a delivery that day of freshly caught fish from Grimsby and this is one of the specialities at the Gate. Decided to go back for supper and enjoyed fantastic fish and chips - also tempting were the mussels and the home made pasta arrabiata. With such a warm atmosphere created by the regulars at the bar, the excellent service, good value, and the great choice of beers and ales we had to go back the next evening for second portions. I was very surprised speaking to Ian and Anne that they have only been running the Gate for a couple of years as they are both naturals. The Gate may be a bit off the beaten track for some, but well worth a visit.

Stayed here while on business in the area and was delighted to be shown to a well maintained room and a very comfortable bed. Ate in the restaurant both nights. Excellent fish and chips one night and a very tasty homemade burger the other. Service was excellent and what a delight to find the owners very friendly and who took the time to make me feel welcome. Will definitely stay here again if in the area

Booked in advance and were hopeful when we saw the car park was full. Goodness knows where they all were as the pub was empty.. The menu was so limited we struggled to find something we all wanted. When the food arrived the veg was in cold serving dishes and was undercooked and bland. There was nothing special at all. When it came to dessert the choice was underwhelming to say the least and was we did have was not worth the wait. Overall i would say overpriced as well. In hindsight i wish we had gone a mile up the road where we had eaten before and knew the standard was excellent.

Despite the opening hours quoted, and displayed at the pub, it was closed Thursday lunchtime. No idea what the actual hours are?

Pre booked in advance the Christmas dinner, unfortunately,it did not live up to anything I was expecting. The food was not hot,and grossly overpriced, very disappointing as the staff were pleasant enough. Will not be going back there for food again,I suggest you do not go there, left deflated .Ruined my Christmas with my daughter...Shame,go elsewhere in future.
