Grimsbury Fish Bar in Cherwell

We had lovely succulent cod in really crispy batter with crispy chips that had a nice soft centre, all with salt and vinegar that you can actually taste! The portions sizes are very generous and all the staff are lovely even at the busiest of times. In our opinion this is the BEST fish n chips in Banbury by far!

Askedvfor a kebab in tray today .. the meat almost nothing. Asked with small amount chips . It comes with bang loads chips .....felling like I was robbed. NEVER AGAIN

my cod was soggy to say the least. I was extremely dissapointed with my tea. the batter was squishy and tasted like gone off cake not crispy as batter should be. as someone who has worked in the fish and chip industry i am shocked at how bad it tasted. never had a worse fish in my life it ruined my day. chips were ok

After shopping today we called in for lunch. Lovely food and a good price. Served by a very nice young lady as well. Definitely go again

Everybody is absolutely certain that the chippy near where they lived while growing up does the best fish and chips ever. Well, this chippy just so happens to be the one nearest to where I lived as a child, but it really does do the best fish and chips ever. And Atlantis down the road never take card so it's a no-brainer on a Friday evening.

Having been a customer for over 8yrs what I have seen is the quality of the food and service decline. The food tonight was not at all great. The fish despite asking for a large piece was small, and the sausage in batter, well looked like it had been battered it was dreadful. The chips were dry and tasteless. Unfortunately the staff have zero enthusiasm and the whole experience is no better than going to a mcdonalds. At least there I know the service will be poor as will the food.

The service was great by the young lady who served me, but as for the rest of the show@ it was poor. Chips were dry and cold . In the bin they went . Never again .

Very large portions for a good price. Went today and ordered a large chips and haddock, and was amazed at how much was given. The chips portion was definitely enough to share for two, but I'm not complaining! Definitely recommend. The staff was friendly and the food was made fresh and delicious. Would recommend.

Moved to this chippy as last one was going downhill. Honestly wish we had moved sooner!! Food is great, crispy meaty fish, good chips not over salted, good gravy. Service is quick and staff are so nice! Always smiley and pleasant :) our new regular!

We are a family of 4 from Australia touring the UK and tried both some fish and chips and kebab, chip and salad trays tonight. Food was fresh and great value for the serving sizes and service was very helpful and friendly. Highly recommend this place.

I or my wife book a Chicken Kebab and chips. Very surprised to see that it was all chips very little meat and for £8 it is a shock . It was the first time I have order the kebab . Just check your portion size before you leave . Diappoubting

I've been to a few kebab places in Banbury and I wish I'd found this place 2 years ago. The food and service was amazing. Plus 5/5 on food hygiene. The portion size was huge and soo tasty.

This is by far the best chip shop in Banbury. We treat ourselves every weekend to fish and chips from here. Really reasonably priced, especially compared to others, great portions and always fresh and delicious. Would recommend to anyone! Always get large cod and chips and is the best ever. Just thinking about it makes me want chips again! Top marks!

It's always a pleasure to visit here, as personal service is uppermost in their minds, even if you are not sure of just what to get. The fish is of a high quality and really fresh, being so far inland from the coast. The chips are generous in their portions, so we limit our visits these days to maintain a health weight!

A friend went to a fish and chip shop nearby and wasn’t impressed. So I went to one nearby and came across this shop. Food was tasty, batter crispy around the edges and the service was quick. Meal was cheap too for the size of portions

We place an order every Saturday night with George for haddock and chips. Our order is cooked to perfection every time. The batter is nice and crispy, never had a soggy one to date, chips are always freshly cooked. Good value for money and wouldn't go elsewhere. George and his staff are always polite and friendly.

Thought I would try this sh#t shop for a change wish I hadn’t bothered. Chips were horrible fish was soggy it all went in the bin, waste of 4.50 and now I’ve got to find something else to eat.

The Grimsbury fish and chips could be the best in England! Every year when we are visiting the UK we make a pilgrimage to this modest fish and chippy for what I believe is one of the best in the country. Wonderful greaseless fish and a mound of chips augmented by wonderful mushy peas. The owner George is a super host of over 30 yrs, well done

Its got a few seats inside and out on a small patio area.good food plenty of choice .reasonabley priced.pictures of george behind the counter plus menu pics. Also some verses written by georges wife and she wrote them round the walls .its a great place with some of the best fish and chips in banbury.george and his wife are a lovely couple and all the staff are brilliant go and give it a try you will see for yourself what im saying is correct.⛤

Fish was crispy and well seasoned, but the chips were the star. Perfectly crisp and had so much flavor. Always my go to whenever I fancy a fish and chips.

Dropped in here for a quick meal before catching the train north. These were simply the best fish and chips we've had for a good while. Nice crisp chips, not at all soggy, and lovely thin, crisp batter on delicious fish. (BTW we had only one lot of chips with our two piceces of fish and that was more than enough). Add to that very friendly and helpful service. What more could you want?

I’ve lived in various places in the South & the Midlands, and this is, simply, the best fish & chips I’ve ever had. And that includes visits to Whitby, Scarborough, Dartmouth & Padstow.

Had a friend come to see us first sunny day we have had for ages wanted to make the most of it so decided to dine elfresco in our garden got table and chairs out and i thought cant be bother to prepare food so got in car and went to our local chippy we call it georges its grimsbury fish bar .wow served in a box fish and chips twice and chicken and chips once all cooked fresh box was full cost £15.50 well worth the money lots of other food on menu pies kebabs sausages etc they have a nice little seating area with a tv in it if you want to eat in or a nice little patio area if you want to sit outside maybe on way back from shopping in town .park in front of shop or small parking area at back of chip shop turn left coming from town by the side of grocery shop .salad bar also available .cold drinks in cabinet not sure if tea and coffee served but im sure if you wanted one george would get one for you staff very cheerful and premises lovely and clean

We came the other day and bought some kebabs. As well as the fact that the food was delicious, the service that was delivered by a young blonde lady with big curly hair was very good, she gave some recommendations and was very polite. Overall excellent takeaway!!

Hubby and i went shopping couldnt be bothered to go home and cook so he waited in car outside i popped in to get some chicken and fish chips yum yum while waiting for meal to be cooked i looked around there seating area not ever such a lot of tables but its lovely and clean i liked the verses that a very talented lady georges wife george runs the fish and chip shop also does kibabs etc well worth a visit

Had a lot of app and my husband and i didnt want to go home and cook dinner so we decided to call at georges fish and chip shop on the middleton road and get some fish and chips and curry sauce for my husband and chicken nuggets and chips for me they were cooked fresh while i waited and we took them home sat in the garden and ate them alfrescco great

This chip shop is amazing and the quality of the food is 5*.However the service by the girls there is rude, they don't smile and look grumpy, snatch your money from you and slam your change back on the side. This has happened on a few occasions and after the first time wasn't going to say anything. Hopefully the owner reads this and sorts it as its the only thing that lets the place down. The main ones that are rude are, the old lady.... if she smiled I think her face would crack. The young mixed race girl and the girl with blonde hair.

Found this place via Trip advisor rating. Had fish and chips and they were excellent. No waiting chips were fresh and batter on fish was crispy not soggy. Excellent experience apart from the staff could have done with smiling as on my visit they were quite miserable.

We probably have a chippy once a month and the quality between the different ones in Banbury can vary considerably... I was aware that the Grimsbury Fish Bar had won 'Best Chippy in Oxfordshire' for 2 years running but I had never tried them out before... I wasn't disappointed... Service was polite and efficient and the Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas were lovely... When you pick up one chip, you don't pick up the whole lot!... Fish was not too greasy and the the batter was crisp... They keep the fish separate from the chips which stops the batter going soggy... I would agree they make the best Fish and Chips in Banbury... and they are not the most expensive either!My only disappointment is nothing to do with the quality of their food, it is the location... Great if you live over the Bridge, but not so great if you don't... Parking is extremely limited and the Middleton Road is shockingly busy at the time you would normaly be getting a Chippy... I will use again in the future, but not every time because of their location...

After trying other local places and being disapointed this was a fantastic find. After living near the sea for much of my life it is nice to find such fresh fish this far from the ocean and this far down south. Would definitely go again and will be recommending to our friends.

This is a long established fish bar, the food is always first class with excellent service. Well worth a visit.

I live on the opposite side of town and when ever we fancy fish and chips I will always make the 30 minute round trip, No matter what you try from fish to pies to kebabs its always piping hot. portions are generous we share 2 portions of chip between 3 of us .

The quality of the cod and the size is amazing, same with the chips and there is a huge amount. My wife and I call there every time we visit Banbury for shopping and always wrap them well knowing we take them home to Brackley. This takeaway has to be tried to be believed, we have been a customer for years, and will continue to be so.

Unless you have a huge Huge appetite only order chips between 2 people. Yep huge portions. The fish (I go for Cod) is wonderful and the curry sauce lovely...Not to hot but spicy enough to make you go ummmm :-) But the Mushy Peas are lush too!
