Roast was tough, dry and chewy. Between us, we had pork belly, chicken, beef and lamb. All of us was tough/dry. Roast Potatoes had been pre cooked and sat under heat lamp and were dry and flavourless. Yorkshire’s dry and chewy. So disappointing. Very flavourless too, really lack of seasoning. It never used to be like this. Starters, and the Kids meals were good (fish and chips/burgers). On a plus side, the table service was good. Play area is great, especially the climbing trees in the bushes. Desserts and drinks all good. If we went back; we would definitely not order a roast dinner.

This pub and restaurant has a great menue and selection of drinks, staff are friendly and well worth a visit. On the negative side due to the need of an industrial kitchen extractor the garden area has a continual drone. Not great for conversation. It looks new. Come on "Red lion" get some company to quiet the fan down or with modern material sound proof it. It's a lovely garden , the drinks and food are great but the noise polution you have added spoils a lovely venue. If I was mean your rating should be lower due this totally avoidable noisey fan in the garden. I hope you can resolve this and get a steady 5 stars. Its in my opinion your only avoidable error.

Two of our party of 5 had roast lamb. It was served tepid with overcooked potatoes and large dark brown inedible yorkshire. What there was of the lamb was really awful, 80% sinews, altogether completely unacceptable I can't imagine how they had the cheek to serve this up. I have been here in the past and the food was good hence the return visit but not this time, poor experience and I wont be returning.

I firstly booked our Christmas dinner at the bull in newick, but was told all the staff was going to the red lion. The food at the bull has always been banging proper pub food. We was booked in at 3.30pm but wasn’t served our first course to 4.20pm. The best way I could explain the food was if had gone to a road side burger bar and they was cooking a roast dinner. It was so poor, the presentation was crap like it had been thrown on our plates. Most of the food was pre frozen… how they could charge us 95£ a head is day light robbery. Total ruined my family Christmas…. Avoid at all costs.

If you look sitting in a freezing pub then go if not avoid, as they cannot put the heating on for customers, even the youngsters were complaining their ears were cold. Cannot light the fires because the chimney stack needs work doing to it. We ate with our coats on and it ruined the evening as we were just so cold through to the bone. No offer of a free hot drink or a discount for spoiling the evening. Sent a polite email to the manager as I was told by the staff, not even bothered to respond. This is such a shame as it was one of my favourite pubs and supported it and recommended it to people but not any more.

The Sunday roast was disappointing...my favourite part, the roast potatoes, were not good...actually all the veg wasn't great. Food also wasn't very warm and had to ask for extra gravy as it was dry. It was a very quiet Wednesday evening and there were a lot of staff but they were more concerned about shutting shop than serving customers. They swept the floor around us and had loud conversations about whose turn it was to do what in the cleaning arena. Meanwhile, we had mediocre food and waited ages for the bill and to pay. I love to see a young team, but these guys need some customer service experience or hands-on management/leadership to steer the ship. Such a shame as I have had many lovely meals and times at the Red Lion. Up to 2012 when I moved away.

The normally excellent Sunday lunch was quite poor recently. The plates were cold so our food was already cold when served. We did mention this politely at the time but the waitress took offence and told us this was normal when serving large numbers! There didn’t seem to be any experienced staff around. The desserts were sadly disappointing too.

Was staying local for my partners 50th birthday weekend so came to the red lion for a meal on the Saturday night. When we arrived we was greeted and shown to our table then 5 mins later 3 lads that worked there turned up with McDonald’s and sat close to us swearing which was great for my 7 yr old daughter to hear! Thankfully they then moved outside after we made a comment which they must of heard. I ordered the chicken burger which was amazing my child had pigs in blankets with mash the mash being rock hard and she couldn’t eat my partner ordered the scampi which was dripping in oil and not very nice. Which we then decided not to waste more money on trying the deserts just incase they was not worth it either.

We had a large group of 35 French visitors who were visiting the local steam rally with their vintage tractors. They decided on the Sunday night they wished to have a group meal. I drove to the Red Lion that afternoon and from start to finish was amazed at their efficiency. They dedicated a whole area of the pub for us which was just right. Upon arrival, Charlie was extremely helpful in getting everybody seated, taking drinks orders by table, then taking meal orders table by table. I had real sympathy for the chef as there were 40 orders in total with the Brits accompanying but the food was absolutely delicious. Beautiful rare roast beef was served as well as many other classic British dishes on this special Sunday evening. I felt very pleased and proud that the French guests experienced such high quality British food in a lovely, traditional inn. Well done to Charlie, all the attentive staff and especially the chef. What a great team you are!

As a former resident of Chelwood Gate , we have seen this pub go through really good times with forward thinking management, fantastic staff and great food and then a few times when it has sadly lacked in all areas. We decided it was a good meeting point for a Friday night meal recently but sadly it is obviously going through one of its lows....I remember when this pub was revamped from a cosy, traditional pub a number of years back and I still think there is a conflict of design here. The mismatched chairs and lovely quirky design of the building with stable area etc, screams rustic but then it has been painted a cool, flat grey and left in a minimalist state which in a large building like this means little atmosphere. It needs warmth, get some plants in there with twinkly lights and interesting art work or features on the walls of its past as an old coaching inn. Put some mellow background music on especially as it was empty ish on a Friday night which in itself isn't a great sign. The food was okay, fairly standard menu but young staff were not that attentive.Quite a few times we had to summon them over to order more drinks, food etc as they seemed to be standing around together by the bar. We arrived in smaller groups to our table and each time we had to call staff over to get more drinks or service. In a quiet pub or even busier one, that should have been noticed as we went in and staff greeting us and attending without prompting. Come on Red Lion, in these boon times as people seek normality and enjoyment outside their homes, this is when you need to capitalise on the trend and up your game! You have the space, a large garden and car park and a special building to do it easily.

We popped by on our way to Ashdown Park hotel. Plenty of parking and large garden meant we had plenty of space around us. Food was good (very nice menu), staff were polite. One way system in place which shows they continue to take covid seriously which is reassuring.Mens toilets need a refurb, and quite a lot of noise from what we assume was the extractor fan in the garden.

Popped in as passing and shown to garden. (I think the gardener is on holiday). Service efficient enough but no more- not exactly warm and welcoming. Ordered sandwiches which were accompanied by salad and a mini chip frier thingy of over salted crisps. My wife’s prawn sandwich was fine- my pulled pork sandwich was barely acceptable as the pulled pork was barely warm and the burger bun it was served in was stale and the toasting process - presumably to disguise the problem, did no more than highlight the issue as it was breaking apart. It tasted hideous. Not really too happy about having to pay in advance and the cutlery wrapped in a damp serviette wasn’t a high point either. Walking through a load of cigarette ends outside the rear doors of the pub on the way out confirmed we will not be back. Plenty of good food pubs in Sussex with much more attention to detail and more importantly, more obvious signs of gratitude for customers business.

Such a shame, we've been going to the Red Lion for years but this was the worst and last time we will be going. I know that Covid is a real change to all hospitality establishments and that they are struggling to get experienced staff and the lack of experience was apparent. We turned up having booked an outside table and all of us had to go inside to check in and then walk past multiple tables indoors to get to our table outside when we could have accessed our table without going inside. We were not felt to feel welcome. From the offset we felt like we were an inconvenience. We also felt that we were miss trusted as we had to pay for everything as we went

My pub experiences have been a mixed bag since coming out of lockdown, so my expectations are rather low for places I haven’t been to yet, but I was pleasantly surprised at Red Lion in Chelwood Gate!My husband, mother-in-law, and I were at Sheffield Park and decided to try the Red Lion for lunch after seeing vegan on their website menu which meant that they likely would be good for gluten-free as well.We were right! The server immediately pointed out everything on the menu that I could eat, confirmed with the chef about my other food allergies and ingredients, and overall was so accommodating.I ordered the pulled pork sandwich that came on an artisan GF bun alongside GF chunky chips (fried in a separate fryer), salad, and red cabbage coleslaw. Everything was delicious with good portions. Being from America, BBQ sauce is a picky thing, and the sauce on the pulled pork was a perfect tomato-based one with sweet and savory notes. Not spicy at all as I also have a colored pepper allergy and wouldn’t have been able to eat it otherwise.Mother-in-law said her pork belly was a bit dry but presentation was lovely. Husband’s chicken and ham pie was incredible he said. (These dishes were not GF.)The prices were a bit high for a pub lunch which might prevent us from coming to the Red Lion often, but the service and food variety availability were on point. Great open space for outdoor garden seating.Would recommend Red Lion to anyone passing through the area!

It was a full pub we were given the last table, the staff were very professional service was excellent. I always worry when I see a menu which does not tell you where the meat is sourced, but we took a chance. The deep fried calamari for £9 was typical pub grub serving with a sharp sweet chill sauce. The Roast beef meal the roast potatoes were hard, the beef had no flavour although sourced from a butcher in Lewes apparently it did not say if it was British beef for £17.00. The red cabbage was inedible dry and with a bitter taste. My Chicken pie was good the mash ok, the cabbage had no seasoning and was dry. The table next to me had fish and chips, for £14.95 they looked frozen the chips all the same size and cut. This pub charges gastro pub prices but does not deliver on quality. But it was full so who knows. They staff refunded the cost of the beef meal and drinks which was very kind. The pub operates on big margins they should try better.

My family and I were really disappointed after a visit here yesterday (Sunday 4th Oct). My Mother-In-Law had wanted to go here for her 60th birthday meal which was also my partner’s birthday. Because of the number of guests they advised her at the time of booking we would need to have two separate tables outside in the marquee. She reluctantly agreed with this as there was no other option and on previous visits the food had been good. When we arrived we were appalled to see that there was a marquee half open blowing the cold October wind through it along with some dirty, wooden picnic tables and nothing else. The floor of the marquee was just mud and dirt which was not ideal given we had dressed up for the occasion. In order to get to the marquee you had to tread over a puddle of muddy water and there was absolutely no thought given to how we would all get in and out. My mother in law initially complained to a barman who quite frankly did not care or offer any kind of help with the situation. I asked to speak to the manager who told us she had tried to ring to reschedule every day for the past two weeks, however my mother in law is in every day and did not receive a call. She also stated that because we had requested the marquee they could not change it (we absolutely did not request it- we were categorically told we could not be inside). Given my mother in law was nearly in tears and there was no way we could sit outside with children in the cold, I then spoke to the manager again to say we were not going to be eating there and that I’d expect to be offered some sort of compromise on the price of the drinks given our day was completely ruined. She categorically declined. The general attitude of the management was disgraceful; she was unfriendly, rude and proceeded to argue with me over the whole situation. How they expected us to sit outside in that was ridiculous. There was no mention of trying to contact us to rearrange when we arrived and so I do not believe for one second this was the case. As far as I’m aware the customer is always right, they would do well to learn how to treat their customers with respect and offer the level of service they deserve. We won’t ever be going back.

Booking was easy - via email with a prompt reply. Arriving for lunch, all the procedures were explained. You download the menu with a QR scanner which reduces physical contact. Food was amazing, we had the camembert to start and the shared roast chicken which was delicious with a great selection of veg. Lovely serving and bar staff who were happy to help and very friendly. Will definitely be coming back again!

Been here a few times but doubt we'll bother again. Service was hit and miss, a mix of waiters and waitresses, some ok one particular young chap was not good at all. Food was nowhere near the quality we've had in the past, making it extremely overpriced as it was well below average. They had a couple in there singing which just about ended it for us as they killed every song they tried to play...even though they were in the bar area they were way too loud which meant we couldn't hear each other in the restaurant area...all in all we were glad to leave but really disappointed especially having paid decent money for a much less than decent meal.

We went for Sunday lunch at the end of September with our son and his children and our daughter for my son's and my birthday. It was a really great meal, very relaxed and friendly staff. The children enjoyed the meal as well, when they had finished the meal they went out into the garden and played until it started to rain, the time was enjoyed by us all.

First visit, probably last despite the beer being good. Ordered the Ploughman £14+. The bread was stale, warmed to make it edable, two cheese both dry had to cut and tastleless, a scraping of salad, with one small pickled onion, a few minute gerkins and 5 capers. The only item on the plate that had any taste was the sausage roll and that was mediocre. I would have thought that to produce a Ploughman's platter would not tempt the imagination too much, strange how wrong you can be! My partner had the kisch with dubious pastry and a basically tastless meal.

This is a well-run and pleasant establishment with highly efficient and friendly staff. Food is well-cooked and portions are generous, although we felt that prices are somewhat high for what is provided. It’s a nice place for a pit stop.

Went here on a recommendation. Found the menu to be somewhat restrictive. Our group having made various selection from starters, mains & deserts felt that the food was acceptable but by no means outstanding.

We went to the Red Lion on recommendation from an employee at a nearby hotel we were staying at. We wanted a more relaxed evening opposed to the formality of the hotel restaurant. We were a party of 6 and had a fabulous meal which was topped off with excellent service. The food was delicious and plenty of choice for everyone and there was no hesitation in meeting our requests for a tweak on one of the dishes. The service was led by a great guy but all the team that looked after us seemed genuinely happy with their jobs. I think the fact that we went back the next day for Sunday lunch shows how happy we were with our night out. Thank you again for looking after us on our ladies night out.

Went for dinner. Service was poor. Food was decidedly ordinary. I prefer pubs where they have a chef creating dishes rather than just plain food you can get anywhere.

Nice garden. Food was nice enough. Inside the pub seemed very empty and lacked atmosphere. Your food numbers get shouted out which makes the experience a little less attractive.

Having visited the red lion on several occasions recently, have to say how bad and hostile the service is, rushed at the bar no pleases or thanks, ask a question get a surly answer, food is average at best and not cheep, visited last on a Tuesday night and the place was dead, hardly surprising

Stopped for lunch today in the garden, shame about the pesky wasps. The mushroom and pesto open sandwich on sour dough was lovely. A reasonable menu, was looking to seeing some of the dishes shown on facebook but couldnt see any on the menu

Decided to pop out for lunch with my daughter today, and chose the Red Lion as I often drive past. Very nice lunch indeed, friendly staff, quick service, reasonable price. Most enjoyable - recommend!

Lunchtime mid week plenty of seating available although no room in front car park. Dog not on a lead roaming around diners for any food scraps on the floor. Fish goujons inedible as still frozen. Returned them to the kitchen and they were replaced, but 1 of the 3 was still frozen in the middle. Food order removed from the bill. Shame as we have eaten here before, won’t bother to return.

Came here for a family meal last night & was very disappointed with the the hostile welcome from one particular member of staff, service & food. We have been coming here for many years & it is a favourite of ours to bring family & friends. Ordered the Chicken Ceaser Salad & it was presented without any chicken!! After I had finished my salad I was presented with my chicken in a separate bowl (I didn’t eat it as I didn’t know how long it had been sitting around unnoticed for). My husband brought this to the attention of the unfriendly member of staff with hope of an apology & a discount off our bill but instead the angry member of staff argued & became increasingly angry when my husband asked for money off the bill. Very dissatisfied & will not be returning!!

We came here again because they are so consistent, it’s the perfect place for family Sunday lunch. The staff are so amazing with kids, always smiling and helpful. Our roasts were huge and delicious - our daughter had fish and chips and loved it. The big garden and climbing frame are the icing on the cake! Great pub

My sister treated me to a meal near their home. The food was excellent and served quite quickly on a busy evening. The service was haphazard that evening, but overall I was impressed to find a restaurant of his standard in a country pub.

We stubbled on the Red Lion. Last week, decided to drive out for some lunch. A lovely warm welcome .... a mouth watering menu. Lots of Veggie options for me and lots of meat for my husband. We started with Mushroom Arachini lovely. I opted for the Nut wellington roast and my husband the steak burger. Attentive service from all members of the team. Such a busy place full of life....... Excellent service and excellent food. We will return !!!!!!

I've just been to one of this brewer's pub in Haywards Heath for a drink and meal with my partner and a friend of ours. When we came to order food, my partner and her friend were told that only one of the four choices of fajitas were available! Quite frankly, in my opinion, salmon is NOT a valid fajitas choice. When our friend then decided to have a steak, NO STEAKS WERE AVAILABLE!!!! So, a new shiny menu, yet most of the food on the central page wasn't in stock. We eventually managed to order some food which, to be fair to the staff, wasn't bad. When my partner and her friend decided that the coffee and cake option was better than a full dessert they were, ONCE AGAIN, disappointed!! There was no coffee machine!!! I'm sorry, what kind of company sends menus out to their pubs, but doesn't then provide the relevant machinery or food to fulfill customers' orders??!!!!! What an utterly shambolic performance by SHEPHERD NEAME!!!! Suffice to say, I'll not knowingly spend another penny in any of your establishments ever again!!! Thanks for nothing!!!!!!!

Great Food! We started with garlic bread which was perfect, toasted with just the right amount of crunch yet still chewy and topped with delicious garlic butter. I had the sausage and mash which was full of flavor and very filling, the best I've had in quite some time. My wife said her steak burger and fries were really good. We had just enough room left for dessert. The apple rhubarb crumble was the perfect end to a great meal. The staff were all friendly and accommodating, even at the end of what I know was a very long Easter Monday for them. Thanks, Red Lion!

I have already reviewed this in the main hotel site. The drawing rooms are lovely, comfortable chairs, beautiful view, BUT the food and wine by the glass were truly awful. Very poor quality and very expensive. Never again.

We moved to Pevensey recently and The Red Lion is our new “local”. It’s warm and inviting, the staff are lovely and the food is always brilliant, portion sizes are good and quality of food is on point. Prosecco deals would be amazing as it does put us off slightly the price of a bottle compared to Tesco next door but if you want a night out then it is what it is! We are regulars and enjoy our time here. Music on a Friday/Saturday night would be great instead of Sundays but that’s just us im sure others like it on a Sunday.

Excellent food and service - as always! This is the best Stonehouse restaurant I have visited by far! Prices are good as well - even for drinks! Highly recommended!!
