New owners, made to feel very welcome, dog friendly, great atmosphere. Food was gorgeous. We walked over from the campsite, 10 mins across the field. We will definitely visit again next time we are there and recommend it to all our friends.

Great pub, food was fantastic all fresh and locally sourced. Had Sunday lunch and Friday lunch here. Both meals of a high standard. Staff very attentive went above and beyond on Sunday to accommodate a vegetarian lunch. Dog friendly too, and even chatted with the locals, lovely relaxed atmosphere would love to visit in the future when you’ve made it completely your own. Thank you. John, Colette and Molly

We went for the delicious Sunday roast beef on Sunday last week.Unfortunately the only roast was a half chicken.I had the steak and ale pie which had good quality meat and excellent pastry although it was rather small. My cousin had the gammon which was more like a slice of boiled ham. We left feeling disappointed which was a shame because it is a lovely pub with friendly staff

We were out for a family drive when we stumbled upon The Red Lion and decided to stop for lunch. Our son has ASD & Arfid . When we explained to the proprietor that he wouldn’t eat from the menu they had no problem with him eating his packed lunch. We received such a warm friendly welcome. I ordered Caesar Salad and husband had fish and chips, Food took a while to arrive but when it did it was freshly cooked, plentiful and very tasty. Coffee was superb too. Atmosphere was very relaxed and pets welcome. The owners had a gorgeous wee dog called Dotty who was so friendly that my child wanted to take her home. Restrooms were spotless and the ladies had an assortment of complimentary beauty products which I thought was a lovely touch. All in all a wonderful little gem of a pub/restaurant who couldn’t have been more welcoming and kind to our child. Thank you ‘Red Lion’. Would highly recommend and would definitely return!

We visited the Red Lion yesterday, mid-way through a country walk in the area. As soon as we arrived, we received a very warm welcome from Kerry and Pete, and their very cute dog Dotty! The pub is lovely, with lots of space to sit both inside and outside, and it's in a really peaceful location. We both had a Sunday roast - one meat and one vegetarian - and they were delicious. Kerry and Pete told us they took over the Red Lion last year, and are working hard to make it a great place to visit. If you're looking for a gorgeous country pub in the area, please give them a visit, we'd highly recommend it :-)

We stayed locally at Welltrough glamping and took advantage of a pleasant walk through the fields to this pub with our dogs. We stayed for lunch and we were very impressed with the food. We had starters of halloumi and black pudding, followed by steak and ale pie and Cajun chicken burger. Cannot recommend this place enough, it’s proper home cooked food and tasted perfect. Dogs were welcome in the front bar, the owners were so helpful offering them water and treats. We will definitely be back when we are in the area, if not for the delicious food then definitely for Dotty the pub dog .

They've modernised the decor, cyclists are very welcome for coffee or a pint. Dogs also welcome. We meet friends who stay on the campsite 10 mins away, the food is always good fresh, good quality and well cooked. Fish Friday is a favourite, beautiful golden battered fish, chips and peas. I had a roast pork ciabatta roll. Lots of proper roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce

Just spent the best part of 2hrs chatting, laughing, eating and drinking at this pub. We booked for an evening meal on line which regrettably did not go through, however Kerry (new owner) was amazing in that she advised the chef was still on site and that she would be happy to take our order no trouble at all. Well the Sunday roast beef did not disappoint neither did the roast ham it was absolutely delicious and hot, compliments to the chef. We then sat and chatted and laughed with Kerry, Pete & Ian (regular). To say that the customer service was good is some what of an understatement it was brilliant. Will we go back........yeah definitely. Both Kerry and Pete go out of their way to make you feel welcome and take time out of their busy job to sit and chat brilliant just brilliant. Amazing couple, best of luck with your new venture in the pub business if our experience tonight is anything to go by then you will do very well xx

We paid our second visit to this lovely pub yesterday. We first visited a week ago as in the area working, and called in for just drinks. We were made so welcome by Kerry and Pete, and found out about Thursday night pie night. The pie and drink for £15 is really good value. I decided on ham and leek, it was delicious... loads of tender meat, and really nice mash and pastry too. My partner ordered steak and ale, and obviously I tried some of that too... very tasty, great job chef! The beer is good, with a nice selection and we also shared a cheeseboard and port... just lovely. We will be back for a Friday fish supper next week!

This is a lovely pub ruined by the welcome that comes from behind the bar upon entering. We were made to feel very self-conscious that we weren’t from the immediate vicinity and were only staying at the local campsite I’m no expert, but given the amount of people that were in there on Friday night, I would say the 50% of people were from the same campsite so this chap better not bite the hand that feeds him and be more welcoming to all. me and my friend came in today for a meal and a pint. couldn’t fault the service as the (i’m assuming manager) who served us was lovely, however the food was poor at best. my friend doesn’t eat meat and is allergic to walnuts and therefore couldn’t have the vegetarian option for the roast, instead the server offered extra yorkie etc which was fine. we waited around 20-30 mins for food, no big deal. when it arrived we were gobsmacked, her plate was literally 2 yorkies, some broccoli, some carrots and swede and a load of potatoes with a minuscule amount if gravy. we asked for more gravy which she received but for just over £12 it was horrible. i had the the chicken BLT which was just over £10 cant fault the ciabatta, it was good! but there was a distinct lack of chips and the coleslaw tasted like nothing but mayo and butter, it was horrible. After we had finished the server returned, he informed us that due to tier 3 restrictions he had to leave all the plates with the food on our table or he could take them if we bought another drink. We asked if we could leave just 1 plate as we wanted to do some work and no one wants to look at half eaten food. As I too work in a pub during this time I am aware that this is up to manager’s discretion and plates can be removed if the customer and bar has proof of purchase i.e a simple receipt. I am fully aware of the rules and regulations and understand this is a difficult time for pubs and hospitality as a whole but I’ve never had such a negative experience in a J.W Lees pub before. On the plus side, banging tunes were appreciated.

This has the potential to be a great pub in a fantastic setting, but if my experience is anything to go by, then it would explain how empty it was. It really felt like we had offended the chap who served us because from the minute we arrived he seemed angry with us. We were a group of 9 and had booked a table, and to be fair we turned up a little late because our walk took longer than we thought, but he made us feel utterly unwelcome and towards the end we got the strong feeling that he was deliberately ruining our experience. He was utterly irritated when we ordered, the food came out in waves - with about 30 mins between the first and the last meal - and any request was met with hostility. Our response was to try and kill him with kindness, but that only seemed to wind him up even further! The only time we saw him smile was when we got up to leave, and he couldn’t push us out of the door quick enough. And as others have said, the food was mediocre at best and the drinks super expensive, so about £80 down for our bar meals and drinks (2 adults and 2 young children) and with the strong sense that this guy really hates us, we left with our tails between our legs and vowed never to return. Avoid if you believe in kindness to you fellow man.

The Red Lion is situated in a the picturesque country setting of Dicklow Cob. The pub is quite isolated and not easy to find as the sat nav post code doesn't take you directly to the pub. There is a large car park with plenty of free parking. The pub is split into three distinct areas, the bar, an eating area on the other side of the bar and the restaurant. I initially went into the bar area but when I asked if food was being served I was directed into the other side of the bar which has more of a feel of a cafe rather than a country pub. The restaurant appeared to be closed at my time of visiting which was lunchtime. The real ales were limited to Robinson's but there were lagers, ciders, wines and the usual selection of spirits. The food menu was varied and the service was satisfactory. The food was of an OK standard but was on the expensive side when compared to other country pubs. Overall my visit was OK.

We have visited many times over the years. We exhibit at the 4 Oakes trade show and usually visit this pub on at least two occasions whilst here. Our first visit is usually on the Sunday afternoon after setting up at 'show' for a swift half as we are gasping. I think this is a locals pub as often there are people inside happily chatting between themselves obviously know each other well. The landlord recognises us from previous years and we chat he,I admit doesn't give a warm welcome but once you get chatting is friendly and approachable. The beer, my husband says is really good the landlord clearly knows how to look after his pumps, barrels etc.The menu has plenty of choices and there is also a specials board, the food is very well presented and very tasty. We were in the public bar but there is a further dining area the other side of bar which is less atmospheric but has plenty of tables for dining. This from our experiences is a great place to eat straight from work but not so much as somewhere to go for an evening. We are only in the area a couple of days and it fits the bill for our needs. We shall continue to come here in the future it deserves a try from new comers to pop in for a quick drink or swift meal but not for an evening out midweek. This pub deserves to be promoted it has a lot going for it. So call in and see for yourself.

Came in on the Saturday with work mates, staff were a happy bunch, dancing along to the singer that was on who was GREAT on the guitar, really surprised to see such quality entertainment, so much better than the usual karaoke nonsense most pubs put on. Atmosphere was very fun, a real mix of old folk, students and locals all interacting together... The food we had was nice and again, the staff were friendly and easy going. If you want a fancy restaurant, go elsewhere, this is a proper boozer with good food, nice people, a great atmosphere (the pub is HUGE) and the beer garden is one of the biggest I've ever seen. I suspect it's a converrted bowling green? Would highly recommend and we'll be back next month. Great stuff!Ps If you're tall, mind your head on the traditional wooden beams!!

Visited on a Saturday (early evening 6pm) and the place seemed empty so we wondered if they were serving food? The building looked immaculate - apparently having recently been decoratedOnce inside we asked if food was being served and it was. We were offered a choice of tables and a very cheerful and smiling waitress gave us the run-down of how the menu and specials board worked. We ordered drinks and these were soon with usThe place suddenly filled with other diners who added a bit of atmosphere to the room. The food was ordered and soon delivered to tableA minor problem with the starter was soon corrected and everything went smoothly after that. The food was well presented and well-cooked and tasted superb. The waitress, despite being very busy, took time to check with us that all was well and it can only be said that she was superb and a credit to the place. The only negatives we would mention are: -The tables (like many places these days) whilst looking new and clean were sticky. It must be something they use to clean them? The Room if not full was a little lacking in atmosphere - perhaps some subtle background music would help but the cheery waitress did compensate on our visitThe price of Draught (Non-alcoholic) soft drinks seemed very highOverall A pleasant visit with good food being served

I use the road nearby on many occasions but wouldn't have known the pub exists if it wasn't for the internet.Quiet Saturday afternoon, one table taken inside and we sat outside by a couple of cyclists. Absolutely no ambience, the main bar is particularly soulless. Had heard good reviews of the food here. Agreed, the food is O.K. but VERY expensive for what you get plus service verging on rude / unacceptable. We both ordered the Thai chicken curry with rice and naan bread from a very less than "jovial" (surly) landlord. Watched the chicken in leek sauce being served at a neighbouring table - very impressive. We were expecting the same quality / quantity. Cannot describe our disappointment when our food eventually arrived. We paid three pounds more than for a whole chicken breast in sauce for six small pieces of chicken (less than half a chicken breast), a barely adequate portion of rice and HALF a small naan bread each Diners are required to pay in advance of meals being slammed on the table. We weren't asked whether we were happy with our meals (which we weren't) and we didn't feel inclined to take issue with a landlord whose attitude verges on aggression.

Came for lunch after a walk and we were not disappointed. Both had Cheshire cheese sandwiches, with a side of sweet potato fries and garlic mushrooms. All reasonably priced and very tasty.

We regularly go to the Red Lion for a family lunch or dinner. The quality of the food is exceptional, all homemade to the highest standard. The selection of Gins is vast, the draught beers have always been top quality when I have tried them and the wines are plentiful.

Took our parents for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it. My mother in law is a bit fussy but tweeking any of the dishes on offer was not a problem and she was completely satisfied. The landlord, Steve, was very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Excellent food and friendly and efficient service.

Visiting the area with friends we chose this country pub for Sunday lunch which is set in a great position just off the village green? Although there is a lovely dining room, we were offered a table in the bar area. (No one was in the dining room and only us plus two other couples in the bar area.). Quite an extensive menu with a 'Specials' board. Prices were on the expensive side, bearing in mind we were dining in a pub bar!!

We had just been on a walk and thought we would pop into the Red Lion to give our support but the bar man politely told us our dog wasn’t allowed. Surprised this is the case in Cheshire’s best dog walking contryside! Never mind the next pub took us in!

Staying at the nearby Welltrough Farm Caravan site. Walked to Red Lion for dinner and we were not disappointed. Food was excellent and staff were lovely. Pictured is one of the 'specials' from the menu, smoked haddock with mustard mash, absolutely delicious.

We have a caravan nearby and usually stop in at the Red Lion when we're in the area. Really good food with a decent selection. Maybe a little bit on the pricey side, but worth it. Good pint. Interior is very nice and plenty of seating outside if the weather is good. Unlike some of the reviews here I find the landlord fine. Not the most outgoing, but there's nothing wrong with that. Definitely recommend

The food is the star of the show at this country pub. We really appreciated the new potatoes and vegetables which came with our meals; thank goodness we were able to avoid the “chips with everything “ approach to food so prevalent in most pubs. And everything was cooked well - none of the over cooked, reheated meals - and the ingredients were fresh and good quality. The summer pudding I had for dessert was a real treat - properly tart and just delicious. I wouldn’t call this a friendly pub as far as service goes, but our meals did come out in good time and things seem to run efficiently. The pub has a large carpark - great for getting a park, but at the expense of any pleasant outdoor garden eating areas. There are tables at the front right by the road. Inside is pleasant enough too, clean and functional. No particular character, but neither have they tried to half modernise it into some kind of pretend “gastro pub”. If it’s a meal you are after rather than a pleasant night out, then this could be a good choice.

First time dining experience for us here. Service was a tad slow, but that wasn't a problem as the food was really nice. On the down side the place lacked atmosphere and the landlord lacked charisma.

We spent a pleasant afternoon and early evening here last Friday while camping locally. There seemed to be a steady flow of customers. We enjoyed a chilled couple of drinks & game of cards in the bar area before moving into the dining area to eat later. Between us we enjoyed the game pate starter and the steak & kidney suet pudding and pan-fried sea bass main courses. Service was friendly and timely and the food was delicious. We were very settled here and enjoyed a couple of coffees and liqueurs before walking back to site. Would definitely re-visit. Very nice.

Excellent food. Service slow. Shame about the very dour landlord. His manner did not encourage us return, which is a shame, I was served the best salad I have ever received in a restaurant, the cheese and onion pie and the steak an kidney pudding were superb.

We took a long walk on Saturday afternoon and fancied stopping off at a cosy pub for a friendly pint on our way. How disappointed we were. It was completely dead on a Saturday afternoon/early evening (which we found odd) and we were literally the only people in there. The bar man/landlord was grumpy and acted like it was a chore to have to serve us. The decor was bland and basic, lacking the cosy pub feel you might expect. The whole place was soulless and felt more like a retirement home or dentists waiting room than a pub.

I see a few Red Lion reviews and sometimes I think they are confused location and perhaps they have a pre conceived idea of what all country pubs should look like, all I can say is the food is consistent and really well cooked. We haven't had a bad meal here. It's probably not got the ambience of some smarter Cheshire pubs and gets a lot of cyclist groups calling into the bar but either the small area for food on one side of the bar and also the larger dining area we have seen full or near to especially for Sunday lunch. Starters last time were a caramelised onion tart with goats cheese scrummy and also lamb for me and beef for the hubby. We like it and can recommend and look forward to coming to the pie night again.

Would have liked to have given 5 stars... But the cheeky so and so's carpark has sent us a parking charge notice!!!!! We've eaten in pubs and restaurants, all over the country and never ever had to pay for parking, I don't even remember seeing anywhere to pay for parking? We were so pleased with the food that we were going to make it our regular stop when we go to the nearby airport monthly. Well certainly not going to be doing that now!

The most appalling 'meal' and service that I have ever been subjected to. We ordered steak and ale pie and this was brought out to us and placed on our table and described as a pie. However, there was absolutely no pastry, just a bit of gravy in a dish. When I called the waiter back he said 'to be honest, we've ran out of pastry' - are these people for real? To add insult to injury, the manager actually tried to charge us for the pies we never received!!!! Shambolic and not for the first time, but definitely for the last. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY!!!!

This place has a vast amount of things for children to play on. However don’t expect to get food quick- they have two cage areas but one is never open and the other has a constant huge queue because the staff take forever! Even if you want drinks you have to queue with the food and last time we queued for 25 minutes! Ridiculous when you have children to supervise and feee!

Average food more like a pub, raw onion in the scotch egg bhaji, bang bang cauliflower poor, fish and chips were tiny and fish dry. So over priced for below average food.
