Great food, freshly cooked to order, with friendly service. Chef even managed to find pineapple for my daughter's gammon, instead of an egg. How about that for great service?

We were so pleased to see that our local had re-opened at the end of July, we went for the opening night and were welcomed with a friendly smile (more than we ever had before) and got chatting to the landlord and family. It was so busy we were all spilling out onto the road and it was a lovely evening for it.So nice to see that the horrible spikey chains along the front had disappeared, the conifer cut back and the gates open to the beer garden which is a good size and had some comfy furniture. We went back for food last night and were pleasantly surprised. The prices seem much more reasonable and the portions good, I had lasagne, salad and chips and my husband had the beef burger, although he said that there could have been a bit more meat on the burger! The selection of food was just right, not too large and we didn't mind ordering at the bar.We also shared pudding, the apple crumble, which was delicious! The atmosphere is completely different to before and it's a joy to walk in and feel welcome. We will definitely be going back more regularly now.Highly recommend stopping by for a drink and dinner. After seeing this pub had a new landlord, I ventured here for a business lunch. The lunch menu was absolutely appalling. Limited and mostly cold with no sign of a pudding. Just a sandwich here is £7.00!! After seeing both lunch and the dinner menus, it seems that the chef here is either extremely lazy or not up to the job of supplying country pub food. The food is so expensive it really should be better quality. Fish and chips here is £11.50! The wine tastes of vinegar and the reception/welcome is nonexistent.Very poor, I left feeling uncomfortable, still rather hungry and £35 worse off. To contend with other quality pubs in this area it really does need to up it's game or face closure.A huge disappointment.

Every time we have been here recently, it has been full so I recommend booking if you want to eat.We booked a table for 9 on a Friday night. The food was excellent and portions large. The service was exactly what you expect in a busy pub but with a large party and loads of beer and wine there was plenty of conversation. The beer is of the same high standard and both the house red and white are very good.

Excellent Roast beef and trimmings , quality meat.Inexperience and a degree of naivity will remain a drawback for a while but enthusiasm, friendliness and willingness to learn will likely (given a chance ) win the day.Focussing on drinks is a lost leader these days. ... and we used to go there 2 or 3 times a week. Originally it was a genuine village pub with well kept beer and 'pubby' food - the level of service was very good, I could go over the road at 9:30pm and tell them my wife had been delayed at work but would join me in 15 minutes and 'could they do steak and chips for two' when she arrived - and that's what happened. When the most recent landlord took over he announced that it was to become a 'gastro-pub', the food became more exotic and the prices shot up - I simply couldn't afford to casually drop in for a meal, it had to be planned and budgeted for. Furthermore there was no flexibility with regard to when when the kitchen closed - when 8 of us (regular drinkers) phoned at about 8:30pm, on a foul snowy night, to order 8 dinners, all the same to make it easy, we were refused - although the landlord's wife took pity and made us a plate of sandwiches.Even though it was 'gastro' the quality of the food and variety of the menu deteriorated over the next couple of years (they stopped using Padbury Meats for their steaks, and they frequently run out of some dishes early in the evening).Anyway, it closed suddenly a week or so ago - I would say to anyone considering taking it over that it can do, and has done, very well. If a new landlord, or a manager from the brewery (Fullers) could get it back to a welcoming village pub there a large number of folk nearby who have been driven to going to pubs in the surrounding villages and who would like to start dining and drinking at the Red Lion again!Keep you eye on the Red Lion - it can only improve!

At first glance this country pub seemed to be an ideal lunchtime stopover. Lots of old world charm and character with friendly service from our barmaid/waitress. Unfortunately the food was really poor. Nothing like the menu on the website. The burger was not the best quality and came accompanied by a bit of salad and chips. By far the worst experience was the homemade Chicken Kiev which was off. Initially the odd taste was put down to the combination of the creamy sauce, warm coleslaw and saute potatoes but it became more obvious that the meat had actually gone off. Having pointed this out, the dish was removed and we were then informed that they would not charge us for that dish which didn't really seem adequate response. The coleslaw had had to be picked through as there were black bits on some of the cabbage suggesting that this too had been too long in the fridge. We overheard the kitchen subsequently telling the waitress that Chicken Kiev was off the menu so it must have all gone bad. We left with a cheery goodbye from our waitress and with the words "hope you are not too ill" ringing in our ears. There is clearly not enough passing trade with the by-pass taking potential diners away from the village but that is no excuse for food that is off.

This pub used to be warm, friendly and welcoming. We decided to go for a meal there and found the welcome from the staff was non existent, their wine list was out of date so had to choose from a limited selection on a blackboard. When the wine was served, it came in a wine cooler, unopened and plonked on the table without a mention of 'would you like to try the wine?'The food was actually quite good but the staff need more training in being friendly. When the bill arrived I paid by credit card and the waitress handed me my card and said ' there you go' no thank you or a smile. As it was Sunday we opted for the roast beef. This consisted of 2 thin slices of chewy tasteless meat with black chargrill marks and a selection of bland tepid vegetables. Stopped here for lunch en route to bedfordshire. Basic pub grub not that well presented if I'm honest. The burger although accompanied by some very chunky chips was only served with a pot of ketchup and some un dressed mixed leaves. Consequently the meal was rather dry although tasty and filling enough. The chicken Kiev appeared to be home made and again was tasy and filling but lacked any finesse in its presentation being served on a bed of coleslaw. My husband opted for the cod and chips and was not disappointed and enjoyed his meal. All in all went away full but not particularly inspired. Might visit again if passing

Sometimes a place is just average, nothing bad, nothing exceptional. Our meal after the Grand Prix was exactly that. The fish and chips were good with fresh cod and the rib eye steak OK but all in all it was rather style over substance. The meals and wine were overpriced for the venue and quality and we felt that we paid a higher price simply for chips presented in a tower.A decent meal in a nice pub with very pleasant staff but at a 25% premium price.

Myself and a few friends enjoyed a meal at this village pub at the end of April. I've eaten here before and have enjoyed both lunchtime and evening meals. My friends and I all agreed that the food was fine - though nothing to rave about - but what let the experience down, was the rather dreary service. Whilst, the waitresses were efficient, perhaps over efficient at times - constantly clearing the table of glasses and plates unnecessarily and making us all feel rather rushed - I'm not sure any of the party noticed even a slight glimmer of a smile from the staff. The house wine was average and outrageously priced at £18 per bottle. Hopefully, when I go back again, the staff will manage a smile and turn an OK experience into something better.

I was lucky enough to be invited to join friends this weekend for an early supper at the Red Lion restaurant in Little Tingewick, Buckinghamshire. After a successful day's shopping in nearby Bicester Village designer outlet I only had to drive 15 minutes or so through beautiful countryside to enjoy some of the best food I've eaten in a very long time.It can sometimes be a bit daunting to walk into a pub on your own as a woman but I needn't have worried as I was given a very warm welcome by the staff as I sat at the bar waiting for my friends to arrive. The wooden beams and open fireplace added to the general ambience and I felt at home immediately. My friends live in Dunstable and had suggested meeting at the Red Lion as I was planning to drive back to my home in Chiswick. The slight detour away from the M40 was certainly worth the effort. Once they had arrived we were shown to our table in the restaurant area. Our creamed mushrooms on toast were a delight and when I asked my friend's husband how his Thai fish cake had been he just gestured to his empty plate as his answer. Our main courses of Hake and chorizo spiced risotto (special of the day) and good old fashioned liver, mash and gravy were equally as delicious. Happily there were no nasty surprises with the bill and we all agreed it was excellent value for money. I would have loved to have stayed longer for an after dinner drink but I had to get back to London, which actually only took an hour and 05 minutes. I will be going back!

Such a beautiful little pub with all the charm of old 'England' I do have to say, for the price of the food- which is very expensive (2 main dishes and drinks- around 60 pounds) the quality is not great! The peas served here, look and taste like baby sick and the menu NEVER changes, not even around Christmas... Not even a mince pie in sight! As for the sweets menu I was expecting a huge range of pub classics, maybe a crumble or sticky toffee pud etc but they served me what looked and tasted like the remains of a babies nappy on a tart. I agree with most of the other comments that if they want to charge upper end prices the menu/chef needs a change.

We visited last Wednesday evening after searching in Buckingham for a half decent pub! This is another Fullers.......with poor value food.We went there to eat being away from home on business. It wasn't very exciting, its all the 'I'll bring the drinks over & you can sit here' virtually empty, cold corner table, nice fire, but you can't sit there, 'its for 6 people'.....!! It was empty all night.I ordered a 'special' stuffed and rolled sirloin on a bed of mash with port gravy.....no vegetables! However @ £14.75 I expect veg.I wasn't told there are no veg included or asked when I placed my order would I like any veg, [ hint hint]It arrived a plate full of meat & potato - it was very unappetising, and other than being starving after working / travelling all day I asked for the veg, 'its an extra ' £2.75 seasonal [ frozen] and waited.......the mash was luke warm....the veg warm and the meat - just cooked.!!!!Now for a total of £ 17.50 - it was very disapointing........its poor value,I expect veg., when on a specials board at that price.Do some home work before you go - or just eat at your hotel its not worth the effort / drive / inconvenience for a very mediocre meal.We paid and left, nobody asked is everything ok, or did we enjoy our meal.My partners was usual pub far of pie, chips and peas. His too was on the specials board, described as steak, mushroom in guiness, it hadn't seen any guiness or ale for that matter, was red in colour and smelt of red wine!!!!!!.......Maybe they picked up the wrong pie, it was so quiet they must have been sleeping in the kitchen, as waited almost 30 mins to eat,and whilst we don't want fast food this is just too slow, when its so cold...........and certainly nothing out of the ordinary!!!!

If they want to charge the prices of a la carte then the food & service has to be stepped up to meet it. I like to support small village pubs as I know its a tough trade so I hope the pub takes my comments & uses in a positive way.

Wanted to take my Mum out for Christmas lunch and having known the Red Lion for a number of years with a number of landlords knew it had the right look that we wanted. It still had the same old charm that I remembered with a lovely bar area and the dining room was lovely and not all crammed in. The log fire was blazing and it all looked lovely. The staff were nice and really welcoming. We had a bucks fizz, 3 course lunch with mince pies and coffee for £65 which we thought was good value. The starters were all great, two of us had very nice steaks and my husband had the turkey (he was no so impressed and said it felt a bit smooth like it had been pre cooked then frozen and cut when frozen as it was 'smooth'). Deserts were all good, just took a long time to arrive which normally would have been fine but we had a 4hr journey ahead of us and that 30min wait was a bit frustrating but it was Christmas day and it was not a big deal.If we lived locally we would certainly go back and take our dogs with us as they were welcome in the bar area to eat or just for a drink. A previous review did make me smile about the price of a couple of drinks and crisps, this is a beautiful country pub not a stack them high sell them cheap chain. You do get what you are paying for and part of that is an old beautiful building.

We went early evening for a quiet drink and the pub was very quiet. Not cheap. A white wine spritzer, a packet of crisps and a pint of regular beer saw very little change from £10. That said the pub was very clean and tidy. Comfortable furniture and well presented staff. I thought the food looked expensive but my partner said it was not actually that expensive. Anyway let's not quibble....This scores four out of five for the beer. Better than "average" as a pub but not "very good" (Trip Advisor should have marks out of six thus avoiding fence sitters! The beer there is very good indeed - served slightly too chilly for my taste but a clear, clean and very fresh pint. If I was planning an evening with the boys (and or girls!) this would tick plenty of boxes. My worry would be that the obvious drive to sell food would encroach on standing drinkers or people that wanted to drink whilst sat down. You should not see "Reserved" on tables in a bar area in a pub - save them for the dining room. Yes, I would go back. Beer very good but a bit uncertain about the rest. .

So, Saturday afternoon, arrived, 5 fellas requiring a pint or two and a sandwich of which was advertised. Possible £50-60 worth of afternoon trade for an empty pub. I say possible as the barman denies us a sandwich saying the "chef" has left for the day and wouldn't budge. So for a struggling pub industry with 3-4 pubs closing every week, the portly fellow doesn't help the situation. Shame. Our money sadly went on a "hungry horse" type place in Buckingham.

We visited the pub today for lunch. The restroom was clean enough and as always no issues there. We ordered two ploughman’s and some drinks. The food arrived (see pics) and we were suitably impressed, the cheese was generous, the pickled onion and especially the bread excellent.Overall impressed.

I had the lobster and it was lovely. All our meals came in good time and were piping hot. The staff were attentive and friendly. If you need a taxi I recommend Sarah's Taxi's. Excellent rates and service.

First visit. I love pies and had wanted to visit this pub for ages. I would love to have given more stars but was so disappointed that even though it was early evening my choice of pies were out of stock. Only about 6 pies available from a wonderful menu. For starter we had the vegetable soup and prawn cocktail - both very good. My husband had the fillet steak for his main course which he thoroughly enjoyed and I had my fourth pie choice option Chicken and Mushroom Pie. Unfortunately I felt the pie was overbaked as the top pastry was extremely hard and I could not cut through it or eat it. The chicken and sauce was delicious but could not see much evidence of mushroom. The vegetables and chips were cooked to perfection. Service was fantastic. The place itself looked as though it needed updating but definitely had character. The pub car park was a nightmare getting in and out. It did not help that someone had parked in the Exit so we had to leave by the Entrance! Would give it another try in the future.

This time I went to Rumsey's with just my wife although I have been several times with other members of my family since I make a point of going every time we visit my son in Tring because I love the place so much. I haven't tasted such delicious drinking chocolate anywhere. It is always so rich and velvety. I adore the stuff and, I think, could very easily get addicted to it! In addition to the actual drink they give you a very delicious little biscuit to accompany it. Every time we go, we buy some to make up at home and I can tell you it doesn't last for long - well not long enough anyway. The café itself is not very big but there are tables outside if the weather is good. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and they also sell very tempting cakes and chocolates and some savouries. Parking in Wendover is very easy and the town centre is worth a visit in its own right. I urge you to go.

Went for a family birthday lunch with my 11 month old. I phoned ahead to double check that they could accommodate a baby in their food options and facilities and was warmly told “yes of course!” When we arrived there was a high chair set up with no safety strap attached (broken as only half was missing) the food was okay, a lovely small portion of roast chicken for him which he loved. However, my issue arose when i needed to change my baby’s nappy. I went into the women’s toilets and there was no baby change facilities so I came out to ask the staff “I wondered if there are any baby chance facilities I could use?” And the man I spoke to replied quite offhandedly and rudely “no it’s a 15th century building what do you expect.” I ended up having to change my son’s nappy on the bathroom floor on a blanket, as the alternative was to walk him back to the car in the rain. I understand that old buildings have less space for baby changing etc, but as I had phoned in advance to double check, it would have been nice to have been pre-warned of this. I also didn’t appreciate being spoken to so rudely by the staff member.
