Bull & Butcher in Aylesbury Vale

Visited for lunch, it was cold outside and it would have been nice to have a fire lit to give some ambiance. However we were welcomed and the menu though limited had good choices for us. Two of us had the fish and chips which was very good. The others had the duck but asked for the fondant potato to be changed to Dauphinois which the chef kindly agreed to. It came with roasted veg and was absolutely delicious.

Great food and service ….. I enjoyed my dinner with friends. They enjoyed too . We will be back next month . See you soon !!!

I think when you visit a place you have never been to it's important to shop local, and eat local today this is more important if we are to keep some great pubs going. I really enjoyed the food here, the friendly nature of a pub goes along way when you walk in and it has loads here, Run by a lovely young couple the menu is simple good value and honest food, delicious and plentiful. A warm welcome good wine and beer and excellent food. If you are visiting Buckingham or Stowe School you will love this place for it's charm. Watch out for their little helper who is adorable.. we will be back for sure. thanks for a lovely lunch the other day.

I booked a table for Sunday lunch and my goodness it is the best Sunday Lunch I have had. We were staying in Maids Moreton and Akeley was the next village and on our walking route and I’m so pleased it was. The landlady was so lovely and made us feel very welcome. Compliments to the chef, the Sunday lunch was amazing and other meals coming out of the kitchen looked fantastic. We heard another table saying how nice the fish and chips were and also the burger, so I think everything is pretty fabulous. We sat in the garden and it was great and lots of room. There is a good choice of drinks with a few specialist ales on pump. On leaving the landlady and a local gentleman suggested a different route back to Maids Moreton across the fields and it was great, we went through an Alpaca field 😊 It was just as they had said and bought us out right across the road from where we were staying. I highly highly recommend going to The Bull and Butcher 10/10

We were staying locally and our host suggested the pub for a meal as it was in walking distance. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food we received - I had the lamb steak and it was cooked perfectly and served beautifully - my husband had a burger served with a really soft and fresh bun. He thoroughly enjoyed it. He was offered samples of the ales to help him chose which one he wanted and nothing seemed like too much trouble. We felt the price was very reasonable. If we are in the area again we will definitely return.

Dani and Alistair the landlords, very welcoming and friendly, food is stunning, classic fish and chips and the endless summer burger were stand outs. Drink selection great. Great summer garden. Of of the best pubs in Buckingham

We had a lovely service from a lady called Jo Who I believe is the owner. She was working on her own it seemed, during the buy one get one free burger deal which I think operates on a Wednesday only. Jo was delightful, smiley cheerful happy and so attentive. she deserves the regular customers who return and have recommended the place, clearly she’s passionate about what the pub represents. There was a lot of food I can’t deny and my only thought was that the burger was ever so greasy and my friend commented the same. The chips were lovely. I would go back, and it’s very clean inside and extremely warm which made it comfortable and cosy.

Warm welcome by Dani the friendly landlady. Burgers were 2 for 1 so it was an easy choice and we were not disappointed! Generous portions and very tasty. Highly recommend

Pleasant pub in small village. Had an overpriced burger with minimal flavour! Beer fine, staff fine, but really nothing to make you want to come again.

We arrived at 1.20 for a 1.30 booking on a Sunday lunch, The pub was empty apart from 1 bloke in the corner, we told them we had a jack Russell miniature dog which wasn't a problem, around 3.30 after we'd spent nearly £200 they came and told us there was a problem with the dog sitting on the bench seat, it had been there 2 hours , so it seems strange they had said that and only 1 more bloke had come Into the pub . So I'm not sure if he complained, we felt uneasy then and drank up & left. Very strange and not dog friendly in my opinion. They may leave the odd hair about but he was well behaved all day. The service was good , the food was below average, the furnace burger had no heat to it & we had to ask for extra chips as there was only a handful. Will not be returning

Just had lunch here and the burgers were superb, one of the best l have tasted. Service was friendly and professional.

Had a soda and lime to drink, the lime juice was practically non existent. Ordered a chicken burger with melted cheese, Mayo, tomato and lettuce. Not enjoyable and very expensive for what was delivered. Would not recommend

We visited last Friday for pop up pie night. The place was warm, there was a buzz with being busy and the food was incredible. Hot, fresh, tasty and for being ‘pop up’ plenty of choice. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. However, it felt service...

We enjoyed an excellent dinner in the convivial surroundings of the Bull & Butcher. Traditional pub food served hot and well, good choice of drinks and, most importantly for us, friendly, welcoming and efficient hosts. We shall return to this fine value establishment with enthusiasm....

A disappointing meal, one steak meal was burnt and cold and was replaced, the roasts were also tepid and mediocre, the service was very slow and glad we sat in the bar as the dining room looked soulless. The puddings were good. Shall not return.

Unusual menu with many interesting dishes. Not the cheapest restaurant but the food is well prepared and has premium meat on the menu.

The steak & guinness pie is the best pie I can remember. The ribeye was also delicious. Perfectly cooked brocolli , carrot & triple cooked chips. Flavour flavour everywhere. And Maya was a very friendly, thoughtful and attentive server. Bull & Butcher was a great...

Came with little expectation from a very damp campsite to nearby pub. Very friendly welcome from landlord. Surprised by interesting menu (not pub grub). I had Stone Bass and my wife had tortellini. And excellent deserts and wine.Seats were comfortable (not hard wooden pub seating). Service was excellent.Great experience. Thanks

We ordered the scotch eggs as a starter which were DELICIOUS! My partner chose the steak which was cooked to his liking & my pork loin & truffle mash were perfect, generous portion sizes but nothing went to waste! The waitress and bar staff were very tentative, overall a great atmosphere and we will definitely be recommending to family & friends.

Visited the bull and butcher on the 5th of April For the second time

We met with family here for Sunday lunch, however when we arrived they had no reservation for us. As we had all cine quite far we were gutted, however the lovely landlady quickly reassured us and made space for us despite being fully booked. We sat in the bar which was absolutely fine, and were quickly and cheerfully served drinks and menus. The menu was lovely with traditional roasts and really interesting alternatives. We had the calamari which was very nicely prepared with a crab mayo and not the usual deep fried with garlic mayo and was very nice indeed. I had the chicken which was delicious and my family all really enjoyed the roast beef. All the staff were really friendly and did a great job but highest praise for the landlady who was really lovely. Definitely we will return its a great pub, great food and great staff.

Visited with a group of 7 of us. Really great Sunday lunch. The starters were very good. The roast beef was deliciously pink and tender. The roast potatoes were very well cooked - often they can be hard and unappetising for a large group but these were all very nicely cooked. Desserts were delicious - the Maltesers creme brûlée was yummy and the homemade sorbets were a perfectly tangy end to lunch!

Yet again a fantastic experience visiting the Bull and Butcher for an evening meal.

First time visiting this fine establishment. Service was excellent, prices good for what you get and the food was absolutely delicious. Will def visit again soon!!!

I don’t often write a review but tonight’s dinner was so delicious we ended up eating all 3 courses without a scrap of food left. Great choice, well presented and super tasty. Not been for a while but will be back.

A group of 10 of us visited this pub, walking from Maids Moreton to Akeley, ending up at the Bull & Butcher for a great lunch. Pies, roast chicken, fish & chips, and scotch eggs all round were lovely. Great puddings (sorbet, ice cream, and strawberry panacotta) went down very well, along with a slosh of port. (Also had multiple vegetarian, gluten free, and vegan options.) The service was excellent, Alister was friendly and very attentive. Would recommend.

This is a lovely pub in a small village a couple of miles outside Buckingham. Decent, if unadventurous, ales on tap and it’s crowning glory, tremendously good gastropub food. Of six adults, not one bum note throughout the meal - and all had starters, mains and dessert - apart from one who was too full for the last. My pork tenderloin with truffle mash was divine - as was the steak which my friend let me have a morsel of. Well priced for the quality, cheerful service and a pleasantly warm atmosphere - thoroughly recommend.

Lovely food, we have eaten here a number of times and whichever dish I/friends/family have is always delicious. The steaks and roast dinner are amazing. A cosy old fashioned pub with a friendly and easy atmosphere, with excellent wines and beers/ales. A real traditional gem which we frequent and enjoy. It also has a great large garden for the summer times.

We chose this pub as a half way house between family in Leicester and High Wycombe for a get together before Christmas.

The choice was of only two real ales at our visit, but the welcome from the proprietors and customers was very friendly.

Ignore the reviews rating The Bull and Butcher as average or below. They are all dated from 2016 and earlier Every review since At the present team have been there have rated Good or Excellent. This is now one of the best dining experiences in the area.

My wife and I were passing so stopped for lunch. Friendly welcome, fresh beer, good menu. The food is excellent, perfectly cooked calamari is a rarity, especially in a pub! That was followed by fish n chips with petits pois, homemade tartare sauce. All delicious, well cooked, well presented and well priced. We will be back.

Very friendly welcome from the brace of Aussies who run the place. Plus Johnnie, the much-travelled local chef. Refreshingly normal, traditional village pub with a simple menu made from fresh ingredients. Excellent ale. What's not to like?

visited last Sunday evening with the wife. Bar busy with locals but was cheerfully greeted and shown into the restaurant. Menus were quickly produced and our orders taken. Although the waiter was new to the job, he was both polite and courteous.

Another delicious Sunday Lunch. I had a lamb skewer starter along with salad, beautiully cooked lamb and great salad with pomegranate. I chose the beef again as Id enjoyed it so much on my previous visit. Again excellent, beautiully cooked along with great veg, yorkie and gravy. Hubby had the duck quiche/salad starter and the tuna nicoise salad, both of which were delicious. Well cooked food and excellent service

We visited this pub last night with friends, the restaurant was empty at 7pm! The menu was fairly dull not a lot of choice, the pork belly chop was extremely tough and was almost fifteen pounds I couldn't eat it.....the burgers were over seasoned with a very strong herb which was unpleasant and the chocolate ice cream was a cheap variety covered in ice! Sadly we won't be eating here again.....a glass of wine and a beer is a tenner, so it's expensive, pub food should be excellent and for these prices sadly didn't live up to our expectations....we enjoyed our evening though.....just go for a drink!

We used to use the pub when Jed and Mandy had the tenancy but when they left we stopped going as the food was not very good . We heard that new landlords had taken over the pub and decided to return to see what they offered, only popped in for a drink met several of the locals we know ordered a pint and a glass of Merlot surprised at the increase in prices not that that would have been a problem had the quality of the Merlot matched the increase in price sadly it did not. The new owners were nowhere to be seen and the kitchen will not be open until the 27/07/16. It would be unfair to judge the pub and the new owners without trying the restaurant and seeing if the wine list offering will be better than the wine served the other night.

Bar was packed, restaurant empty except for us four. Liver bacon , onions and mash was really good. Very friendly staff. Reasonable prices.

went in for lunch waited five minutes for waitress?? to appear. no smile or greeting, asked for menus which were on bar, we are getting new menus, but all food on blackboard are available. Ordered meals and she disappears again no smile or chat. Returns ten minutes with soup?? and says cooker not working and only food available was chilli con carne or chicken tikka, which we ordered. Soup was carrot and coriander, tasted like 3rd or4th watered down. it was so thin it did not coat the spoon.it came with baguette that seemed to have been soaked then put in oven, the chilli and tikka were reminiscent of the old packets. Still managed to stripe us for 35 quid. beware

A group of 5 of us went for food just as the new owners had arrived. They gladly warned us of that but we went anyway. The welcome was great, the beer excellent, the food fine. We all had steak so that should be great too but i will give them the benefit of the doubt and try again once they have bedded down.

We were a party of 6 girls, and the restaurant had one other party, so it was quiet. We have visited the pub on regular occasions for a drink and the pub itself has a lovely atmosphere.A couple of us ordered a starter off the specials menu which was ok, but when it came to the mains, 2 of the girls asked for veg instead of chips and got watery carrots and broccoli that had had the life microwaved out of them, i had soft sausages with big lumps in the mash and a skin on the gravy.Three of us had ordered sides of garlic mushrooms, but what we received were three starters brought along next to the main course, and charged £5.95 each for them! The waitress kept being sent back out by the chef to ask us more questions and even then they came out wrong. The waitress said she was new, so she was still learning, but when she would come to our table, she would stand at the head and just look at us all until we had all finished talking, before she would start, i found this quite uncomfortable, and a little rude. Its safe to say, with the bad food and the poor service, i certainly will not be returning to eat here. Which is a shame as its a lovely pub to sit and have a drink.

There were 6 of us dining having a starter and main courses, whilst the starters were ok the main course was dreadful with one person's being so salty it was inedible and a another three of our party finding the pie's meat content low and tough and again very over salted. As this was a celebration a complaint on the evening would have spoilt the occasion even more. The pub has a good atmosphere with open fires and good beer, beware the food!

Visited Bull and Butcher for my Mum's Birthday, had a couple of good pints in the bar before going through to eat.The menu has changed quite a bit as it is now under new management, very much pub food; burger, pies, scampi, etc.We ordered different starters, which were all OK. The mains were pretty poor, the chicken Diane was inedible as it was so over seasoned, the crust on one of the pies was burnt and the oven chips were a bit grim.Wouldn't recommend.

We were staying near Silverstone for a driving experience and wanted somewhere with good food and a good pint - after looking on Tripadvisor we thought this looked the best bet. Unfortunately we picked badly and although the the pub looked old and interesting the food was very ordinary and straight from the freezer into the oven. Would not return. To be fair to the staff they had only been there a few weeks and we're looking for chef. Not a good overall experience.

We went to this lovely pub on a Sunday expecting a good old british roast as you do and were pleasantly surprised that they offered a full menu. The food was excellent quality, fresh and homemade. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the pub itself was nice and clean. Highly recommend this pub, you will not be disappointed.

We went for Sunday lunch (11-10-15) and to be honest we picked the restaurant because the Vulcan was flying over that day so made it a family day out. We had a traditional Sunday roast and the pub was busy but the food was very good. All in all a nice pub, good food and service was good too and would return.

We had an excellent lunch here last weekend. The service was very good and the price was very reasonable. An added bonus is the excellent pint of London Pride that is available here. The menu had a good selection of meals and we intend returning to try an evening meal in the near future. This is definitely one to add to our list of favourite places to eat. The only downside is that parking can be a bit tricky.

Previous reviews do not do this lovely pub justice .Spotlessly clean lovely welcome by everyone and a really good Pork Sunday Lunch lots of veg roastiies and yorkies.We could have had Beef or Gammon which we saw on other plates all looking really niceDefinitely be back even though its not in our area.Thanks again for lovely lunch warm welcome and beautifully clean its a credit to you.

Visited here and we were welcomed with open arms. Very friendly pub with a bit of character, which is always nice. The food was of very good pub standard. The service was excellent and I would visit again.

Visited the establishment for Sunday lunch after visiting the website. We were a party of 9, one of whom was on a strict gluten free diet. We had booked in advance and checked they catered for this. On arrival we were told they only served traditional lunch on Sunday's - a fact not clear on their website. We ordered the roasts which were readily provided complete with pots of gravy. When we asked for gluten free gravy for the gluten free customer we were told this should have been requested at the time of booking and was not available. A roast without gravy?! Unbelievable. The meat was dry, overcooked and although the meal was served promptly, there was no follow through as to whether everything was in order. Staff were miserable, the owner discourteous and we requested the bill twice. They certainly did nothing to earn their 10% automatic service charge. We will not be returning

Nice friendly staff and a nice restaurant for Sunday Lunch at a reasonable price. My only criticism would be that portions are a little on the small side, especially the vegatables - although what there was, were very good. The extra gravy was fab.Would definitely recommend and will certainly go back.

A long hot day at Silverstone so was nice to sit and have a drink at the bar followed by a lovely meal in the restaurant. All the staff very friendly and had a very enjoyable evening, good food and good company.

We ate here for a pub dinner one night midweek, both of us had burgers which were tasty, served with lovely homemade coleslaw and chunky chips. One deli slider (gherkins and cheese) and another pulled pork, good portions and scrummy!To finish we had one sticky toffee pudding with custard, and one salted caramel cheesecake with cream, again good portions, really tasty!The bar team are happy, friendly and welcoming, locals are good for a laugh, all in all a lovely place to stop in and while away some time. I'll be back for more food soon.

A gorgeous little pub in the middle of nowhere. The food is surprisingly good!!! 5 ales on tap in addition to the usual stuff like Guinness and Fosters. Very nice owner and a friendly atmosphere.

The new owners have made such a difference. Friendly welcome, great beer brands (Fullers) and well kept. One of the nicest well kept "London Pride" ever.The food service is quick, fairly priced and nicely presented. What more could you want? Good selection of typical pub food and more a sophisticated menu with specials too. NB Pensioners lunch on Wednesday and Thursday - if you are of that age - not to be missed.

This is the village pub near the big school, where my wife was Matron a long time ago! On this return visit we had to stop for lunch, and we did, with pleasure!It's very smart, nicely decorated, neat and tidy with a good welcome from the landlord, that's the restaurant, and with three good ales the pub side is well equipped too! I had the steak and ale pie which was homemade and full of meat. Tasty!During our meal two men came up to say they were 'old boys' and had heard we had connections to their school, but we were different generations, however they said there was no more food left for lunch (?) - odd as we were the only diners there! Puzzling! There's a lovely outdoor area, with spanking new gents loo on the way. All in good order this place.

Good, simple menu and specials board. Food is freshly prepared food (the Sea Bass is excellent) and can be eaten in the restaurant, bar or the nice comfy reading area with the sofas! Really nice pub with landlords who care and excellent food - well worth a visit.

Lovely home cooked food and the desserts are the best I have eaten. Will definately be returning. The couple running this place keep the cleanest pub in town with a warm atmosphere and great beers so I am told by other family members.

I Ate in the bull and butcher Akeley last Friday evening, fantastic service and staff (especially on the bar!) & the food is to die for! I had the beef slider and my friend had the 10oz rib eye from the special board. This came with all the trimmings! I would recommend this pub & restaurant to anybody looking for a fantastic atmosphere!

One of the nicest, friendliest pubs going. Had the best ribeye steak i think i have probably had. Homemade white chocolate cheesecake was divine for desert. Definately recommend to anyone. Thank you for a lovely evening. :)

A very welcoming village pub offering good food in a nice atmosphere. Now owned by new people from when I last visited but it has been brightened up.The menu is not vast but the food is good quality and reasonable in price.Its a bit off the beaten track - but is worth seeking out if in the area.

For our joint birthdays treat, we had a meal last night at The Bull & Butcher at Akeley, famous for their Steaks! We shared ‘Chateau Briand for 2 people’ and it was absolutely AWESOME! Every aspect of the meal was superb – and it’s not often I can say that when we eat out! The hazard of trying out ‘new’ venues is that we are all too often disappointed and wished we had ‘cooked in’ at home or gone to a regular venue that we already know well. But following serious recommendation, we decided to try out the Bull & Butcher – and we had one of the most splendid feats I can ever remember. And the staff were very friendly - delightful! VERY highly recommended folks!

I can only agree with what most have said about The Bull and Butcher......we went as part of a group out for a meal on Friday night. The meal itself was excellent with some fine tomato soup for a starter......the mains for myself was lasagne served with salad and garlic bread.....I just managed to eat it all.....it wasnt a tiny serving. The service was speedy and friendly with the girl serving our table working her socks off. All in all a great evening out with a nice atmosphere.....heartily recommended.

My husband and I have visited regularly over the past year both for a quiet drink or a tasty meal. I can safely say that we have never had a bad meal, the food always tastes great and is so well presented. There is always a good choice on the menu and we also love the option of the specials board offering a variety of different meals to suit all tastes. We look forward to the summer months when we can enjoy family meals in their huge garden.

Hadn't booked a table but Ged kindly squeezed us in although fully booked, thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the Guinness is some of the best kept in the area, Top marks for food, service,atmosphere, and Ged is a Diamond!

Me and my wife were regulars had our wedding breakfast here 6 years ago!!!.Management changed pub went into decline then in March last year Ged & Mandy took over.The pub is now better than ever fantastic décor,atmosphere and best of all the food !!!,best fillet steak ive ever had.The menu is superb everything fresh home cooked and superb value,lunch or evening fantastic.If you have not been you are missing one of the best pubs in the country!! and trust me ive been to many!!. Superb Sunday Lunch as is everything.Visit soon.

Popped in this pub to grab some food, it was quite early on a Friday night. The bar was busy with what seemed a friendly crowd, immediately what seemed like the land lord acknowledged us and got one of the waitresses to show us to a table. The restaurant was clean and characterful. The menu was good and had plenty for most tastes. We had the steak pie special,which was fantastic. I would recommend anyone to try this pub. You wont be disappointed.

I was taken there for Fathers day, the food and service was the best I've experienced in a very long time. I have since returned on other occasions and it is still as good as the first time. I am now arranging for a luncheon party to visit and enjoy the same experience as myself. Long my they reign.

Visited the bull and butcher for Sunday lunch today with my partner and my son , fantastic food again, the beef was beautiful and a great selection of fresh vegetables, cheese platter was enormous and a great chilli relish, brownie and ice cream looked amazing . As always a friendly welcome and great service, already looking forward to our next visit.

We have just returned from lunch at the Bull and Butcher. The pub is a traditional village pub with a warm, friendly welcome . When we arrived on Saturday lunchtime it was quiet as we were fairly early and we managed to get a table in the bar as the dining room was set up for a fully booked Valentines night function. The menu is supplemented by specials on the blackboard and we all ordered from this today. On speaking to the owners wife who is also the chef, all of the food is home cooked. We ordered the Shin of beef and Fishcakes and they were superb. A rich gravy accompanied the beef and it was beautifully presented. The Fishcakes were on the board as being accompanied by chips but on request the chips were substituted for boiled potatoes with no fuss or drama. Desserts were also fantastic , we ordered 2 between 3 of us and these were fabulous. We really enjoyed our lunch and the suggested wines to accompany the lunch were good wines and good value. Molton Brown products in the loos are also a classy touch. We will be back and look forward to this. A great little find.

Nous n'avions pas réservé et nous ne nous attendions pas a trouver une auberge de ce standing dans cette région rurale ! Un vrai feu de cheminée dans la salle du pub et un "sunday roast" excellent (gigot d'agneau avec légumes et le yorkshire pudding qui avait comme défaut d’être trop petit !!!) les desserts aussi sont très bons et le service chaleureux ! Il y avait d'ailleurs salle comble à notre départ donc nous nous somme considérés chanceux d’être arrivés de bon heure !
