This was my first visit to The Red Lion.A very pleasant experience indeed. The staff were friendly and the quality of the food was quite excellent. A starter/main course plus wine was just under £50 per head. A fair price for what was provided.Well worth a visit.

A lovely country pub. The service was great, and the food was freshly cooked, hot, and delicious. I had fish and chips, mmmm, and hubby had the Red Lion steak burger with cheese& bacon with fries. We would definitely recommend and would visit again if we are in the area. Thank you, Daniel, for welcoming us to your pub tonight.

Just had a lovely meal at the Red Lion. Recently reopened with new management. Busy when we arrived. Not an extensive menu but everything that came out of the kitchen looked lovely. My husband had Pil Pil prawns to start, lamb shank for his main. I gave starters a miss as I'm more of a dessert person and had fish and chips and chocolate brownie. All the food was plentiful and delicious. The bill for two courses each, plus two drinks each including a tip was £85.00. I would definitely go back.

We four friends had not met for 9 months and yesterday we all drove to Britwell Salome - half way between our homes - for a celebratory lunch. We were not disappointed. Last time at Oliviers we sat in the garden but today we are inside. Clean, friendly and well spaced; we were welcomed to our table by the window with a tray of bread and wild garlic pesto - a lovely nibble. The menu was well tested by all of us as we started with crab ravioli, sweetbreads, and tempura prawns followed by saddle of lamb (succulent), muntjac (a real treat in a rich gravy) and duck breast (delicious). We completed our lunch with a treacle sponge, chocolate device and a rhubarb syllabub. All agreed that they had had a most enjoyable meal, with a well judged selection on the menu and all beautifully served. Thank you and we will look forward to our next visit.

I have commented fully and fairly on this excellent restaurant but the intervention of covid virus has disrupted my gastronomic activity so, if anyone else is like me inclined to recoil from carry-outs, I am delighted yto confirm that Olivier at the Red Lion has added luxury to carry-outs. Expertise in sourcing and skill in food preparation support deft packing which has repeatedly provided an easily unpacked repast which has fully satisfied our expectations. If the Red Lion is closed, ordering and collecting is a welcome second best.

Having pre-booked a table for three, we went last evening with for supper. Greeted in a most polite manner and shown to a comfortable table and quickly offerred aperitifs which we accepted. Menu provided on a large easel at the table and choices made, I had sweetbreads in a grain mustard sauce, followed by a hare casserole, both were absolutely excellent. The ladies started with a different soup each and both had the roast duck breast which both claimed were superbly cooked and just to their liking. We each had a different dessert, mine was the syrup pud with custard, not had one as good as that for many, many years. Our wines were very pleasant and served well. Staff were well masked which is sometimes a difficulty with communication, but there were no real problems. We will in the fulness of time certainly go to the Red Lion again. Many congratulations.

I found this great place to eat since we were all encouraged to eat out... I will continue to eat out at Oliviers. The menu is varied and it's difficult to chose what to eat as the choices are all just to my taste. It's ideal to meet up with 'socially distanced' friends as the garden is sheltered. I'll certainly be back soon.

Our friends who are regulars suggested we met for lunch. There is no doubt the food is excellent but the service is very very poor! The waiter cannot be understood and doesn't understand you. Some of us had venison steaks which were underdone BECAUSE we were not asked how we wanted them cooked. They were underdone, some left on the plate, we complained.no real apology just a tough look. Our starter drinks were wrong and when we finally went to the loos they were tatty and substandard for a Michelin restaurant, perhaps the inspectors don't go on their visits. Not sure we will go again.

Today had our fourth lunch at Oliviers since end of lockdown and it is still a super, consistent restaurant. Always a good - and very often a great meal here. Today we had sweetbreads (lovely), crispy duck salad and tempura prawns as our starters and monkfish (beautiful) and rack of lamb (perfect) between the four of us. The crème brûlée is the biz and the sorbets perfect. Not a cheap meal, but really good value when compared with many pretentious 'gastro-pubs' who charge similar prices for rather ordinary cooking. Olivier and his staff are chefs and foodies - and it really shows. This is a nice, clean, well-run restaurant with no unnecessary frills or gimmicks. The food does the talking here. Easily (IMHO) the best eatery around here now. Olivier's previous venture, The Sweet Olive was for well over a decade our absolute favourite and The Red Lion has seamlessly carried on the tradition. Already looking forward to our next visit!

Being of advanced years it seemed prudent to batten down the domestic microbial hatches for six months but in a changing world one must take one's pleasures where one can so we broke out of isolation and went to Olivier's at Britwell Salome. The countryside was still lovely, the Red Lion remained a fine English inn and the service continued to be skilled and attentive.Tables are further apart, visors and hygiene were discreet but effective. But the important thing was that Olivier's food remains exemplary, combining the provender of rural England with Gallic tour de main. Six months was far too long.

The staff were friendly and knowledgable about their produce. The Mediterranean Fish Soup was an exquisite starter, as was the duck salad. For mains we had the Onglet of Beef and the Cornish Fish - both lovely. These were followed by a wonderful treacle pudding and the brilliantly simple Creme Brûlée - desert wine, coffee & port et al.We had a lovely evening, with wonderfully prepared local produce served by very attentive staff; the wine was lovely and the overall ambience made us feel most comfortable. This restaurant is really good. We met friends at Olivier's for Sunday lunch. I very nice atmosphere (log fire, friendly staff, good decor). There was an "interesting" menu with some unusual dishes as well as more traditional English fare. I had the Lamb Steak, my friend had seafood and our wives had the fish "special". We were all delighted with our choices. The service was friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We will certainly go back. We had really recommended the food so we were hoping that it lived up to the great review that we had given to our friends.Fantastic meal. Large selection of dishes, something for everyone. The razor clams aren't something that you see on menus everyday and were delicious. The duck salad starter had just the right amount of meat. The ox tail in pastry was wolfed down, and the scallops and monkfish was cooked perfectly. No rubber scallops here!Rounded off with pudding and coffees. Had a lovely lunch at the restaurant yesterday in late Feb. Have visited several times, but this time was a special occasion with seven adults and four children celebrating a wedding anniversary and Sunday lunch. The interior is warm, comforting and well decorated in a refined but rustic style. We had a nice big table by the window, and the food was very good. We had steaks cooked how we liked, pork Sunday lunches and a good sea bass main course, and everyone was happy and ate everything. The local beers in tap are also very good and the triple cooked chips are delicious. However, perhaps the best part of our visit were the happy, welcoming and helpful lady and two gents who looked after us all the way through the meal. Their service was perfect, and they are ideal employees for any restaurant. Looking forward to coming again!

Thank you to Olivier and his wonderful team for another delicious meal. The menu is varied and interesting. Between us we had tuna tartare, prawns, razor clams, onglet, duck and muntjac. Clean plates all round! The food is really reasonably priced and includes salad/ vegetables. The fashion at so many restaurants is an expensive main course and then £4 per item if you want any vegetables! Pretty stingy and annoying. Not here though. Never managed to get to the Sweet Olive whilst it was under Olviers management; we have recently visited the Olivier at the Red Lion and were not disappointed, the menu was varied and the wines were also good;the dining room was well appointed and comfortable; was tempted to take the table by the bay window but was put off by the draught coming from the front door every time it was opened /closed however the open fire that was blazing nicely in the hearth did much for the ambiance of the room; however if the front door could in some way be modified as not to give directly into the room this would immeasurably improve the front bar room area. The food was well cooked and presented and our changes to the menu as selected by us were taken into account making for a very tasty meal; the front of house staff were both attentive and courteous we shall definitely be going for more and can recommend it to any foodies looking for a change;well done the Olivier at the Red Lion in Britwell Salome.

We visited the restaurant on a very hot summer evening and several of the dishes were geared more for autumnal weather i.e. game and casseroles, which limited our choice a little. Also chips seemed to be the predominate accompaniment for many of the main dishes which put me off a bit. Having said that, the special of the day fish dish and dessert were delicious, although the crispy duck salad needed a little more asian spice to make it really interesting. We did have a very pleasant evening, served by very friendly and efficient young people, and we are looking forward to returning to sample some of those autumnal dishes in cooler weather.

I have eaten food cooked by Olivier from the Beetle and Wedge in Moulsford, the Sweet Olive in Aston Tirrold (when I realised he had moved there) and now The Red Lion in Britwell Salome. So I am unashamedly a fan. But my wife had not been to the Red Lion before until dinner on 9th February. She was not diappointed. Good food, well cooked, great favours, a nice ambience and good wine (courtesy in part of Stefan, his partner at the Sweet Olive who now has an excellent wine and tapas bar of his own nearby in The Clos, Wallingford. If you had a driver to take you to both for a fod and wine fest, Nirvana for a foodie in Oxfordshire). Pricing in my view for what you get is good.I am only worried when Olivier hangs up his apron, Hopefully no time soon.

Having booked a table earlier in the day we were looking forward to a good evening meal. The place was slowly filling up with fellow diners , so a reservation was a good idea. The ambiance was lovely and was warm and inviting. The menu was well chosen and well balanced not too large . With some nice daily specials. Starters and mains were excellent cooked perfectly and well presented. In particular my main of escalope of venison with creamed cabbage and triple cooked chips and a lovely accompanying sauce simple and perfect. We declined deserts but they were all very enticing and maybe next time , which is a must !! . Go you'll love it .

I don't know why it has taken us so long to realise that The Red Lion had opened again with Olivier at the helm. We used to love the Sweet Olive and were so disappointed when he moved on. We used to love this restaurant when it was The Goose as well.

A lunch with a bunch of friends at the Red Lion at Britwell Salome was an honest-to-goodness treat. We chose from the specials' board and thoroughly enjoyed unpretentious food, prepared with rarely found skill. The obvious components comprised deliciously prepared fresh produce, together with ancillary items clearly hand-made with subtle finesse.

We booked and were extremely surprised at the extensive menu and then were offered specials in addition. Three of us chose different dishes in our three course meal and all had clean plates. The staff are very welcoming and the food was definitely freshly cooked. Such quality! We are going again soon, but will ring to book as we don't want to be disappointed. Olivier creates his own special French influence and a fine dining experience. Good car park, great atmosphere and the florentines with the coffee were just perfect. The next table were celebrating a birthday and the Red Lion staff made it very special.

This was the fourth time I've eaten here - it is consistently good and the menu changes enough to be interesting for my guests while keeping my favourite - Cornish fish medley with risotto - the best ever yesterday!

Somewhat bored with the current offerings in Henley at the moment - we ventured a little out of town and had a very enjoyable evening at the Red Lion.

Have eaten here a couple of times since Olivier has taken over the Red Lion. Previously really enjoyed the food / wine / setting however on a busy Saturday summer evening we were squeezed into the back room (it was hot, stuffy and noisy) and the food wasn’t quite up to scratch. Starter and main fish dish rather bland and steak over cooked.

The success of any restaurant is repeatability and consistency. This restaurant does not disappoint. Our Saturday evening meal was just great, Accompanied by an excellent Sancerre and a rich Burgundy (and a taxi home) this was a lovely evening. Oliviers Béarnaise sauce is the best I’ve ever tasted. Well done team for such a lovely evening

Have been on recommendation from the owner of le Clos wine bar in Wallingford ( Stefan ) and we were not disappointed. Extensive menu and good wine list shame the wine by the glass offer is limited to house wines . Will return

We we're on our way to music festival and fancied stopping somewhere for a bite to eat and happened to see the Red Lion at the side of the road and decided to chance it - what a find!

Friend and I went for lunch on a Thursday, Glad we booked as was fairly busy. We were able to sit outside as the weather had turned for the better. Delicious black tiger prawns with tempura to start and Cornish fish in saffron sauce was so good I didn't want it to end. Nice to have 'extras' like the delicious bread with garlic pesto and then a little homemade chocolate biscuit with my coffee. Wasn't aware there was a very good value lunch 'deal' until later which was a bit of shame as a la carte is a little pricey.

We stopped here on spec, thinking we'd just have a cheese sandwich for a quick bite of lunch. What a find! An impressive blackboard menu, as well as a list of daily specials, from which we selected plump fresh hake baked with tomato and little snips of chive, served with lemon basmati rice, broccoli florets and carrots; and a delicious tempura prawns with a soy and chilli sauce and salad leaves. Before the food appeared we were brought complimentary french bread (super-fresh, two kinds: seeded brown and white), a home-made wild garlic pesto and little fragrant olives.

Driving from Stratford to London, hunger got the better of us - and serendipity led us here. How lucky we were - food was beyond fabulous. Only problem was trying to decide which of the delectable options to choose. Staff really warm and entertaining. We loved it! Details in the phone for a return visit. It’s only 100 miles :)

Outstandingly good food, turning out to surpass high expectations from the menu. Delicious and generous with great flavour combinations, as in the terrine starter. Even better we thought than when Olivier was at the Sweet Olive, with friendly service.

The food was outstanding and the service was attentive and friendly. One of the best meals I have ever had. Not overly fancy, just great French food. If I could give it 6 stars I would.

This is one of my favourite restaurants. We had fish & it was well cooked, with tasty mash & beautiful vegetables. I don't normally rave about vegetables but they source and do something rather wonderful to their vegetables (& salads) ! The staff are also very friendly, but it can be difficult sometimes to get a table. I can't fault this restaurant - even the beer tastes different here.

We were staying locally and came here for dinner. Food was excellent and a good selection of options. Both had starters - Chicken satay and jerk prawns. For main we had pork belly and monk fish with Pak Choi and a creamy coconut sauce. Really nice flavours and decent portions- too stuffed to look at dessert menus. Service was good and felt looked after. A little on the pricey side (£77 for 2 with an alcoholic drink each) but not too bad, especially for the quality and portions.

Went to the hotel restaurant only. Good food, lovely rural setting, spacious for a big group friendly staff, will go again.
