Our first visit to the pub, which was an impromptu visit. So didn’t have a booking. But we were met by Andy at the front desk, who sat us down no problem. He was fantastic. Very personable. It was a busy lunch time but he made us feel very welcomed and relaxed. Food was fantastic and served in a very timely manor. We will definitely be back for the Sunday roasts that Andy recommend !

Traditional old pub with log fires and really low ceilings. Being over six foot is a challenge in parts of the pub. Good selection of beers and other drinks. Not the cheapest prices but the atmosphere is lovely. Well worth a visit if passing through.

We arrived soaking wet after walking in torrential rain to a warm welcome from both the staff and the regulars; what a wonderfu, friendly bunch of people. I must mention the choice and condition of the beer; simply superb! This is how to run a pub! Update: This place is just superb! Warm welcome, excellent food which is also great value & great ale, even the customers are all so delightful. Positivism, friendliness, & service abound; it really is excellent.

I have visited this pub before but always sat in garden to eat. This time we was inside and I have to say it’s not the best place to eat. The tables are sticky, the menu filthy and there is a funny smell throughout. The toilets were clean but the open window gave me privy to the staff in garden swearing and smoking. We ordered from the meze menu and everything we ordered was tasty and good value for money. Doubt I will return.

Had'nt been to the Red Lion in years always had been snobbish and clicky, this is not a large pub Old beams open fire type of place took my wife for a quick drink after a bike ride but decided to have something to eat. The bar snacks menu was extensive and very surprised at the price more than adequate unless you like your plate piled high mmmm now summer is coming will definitely go back. This is not fine dinning but at the prices no room to complain, I think this is a family business but a relaxed approach and a cheery smile when not on the run. Now the important bit the beer, a small choice but sure you will find something to suit they also hold beer festivals this place is ideal on a summers day or a cold winters night sit outside sit in the Garden stroll along the riverbank even an old church to wonder round if you like looking at old Gravestones lol. If I could afford to buy a Pub this would be the place.

This pub is very old and has historic character. We went there for an evening meal, my partner had liver and bacon with mash which was pretty good. However, I had chilli con carne which was very poor quality in fact I only ate half of it. The staff are friendly and there is a log fire and a pretty good atmosphere but there is a strong sense that the place has been neglected and no money spent on basic housekeeping and upkeep. The location is an advantage being close to the river and it has an important history behind it so it would be a pity if the owners didn't invest some funds into sprucing it up, giving it a thorough spring clean and analysing what works and what doesn't in the kitchen and menu.

My wife and I visit the Red Lion regularly, often to have a meal and stay on for the folk evenings. We've brought friends and family here on many occasions, and all of them remember the pub with affection, especially our overseas vistors who find here everything they expect from a traditional English pub. We've had lunches, dinners or just popped in for a drink. The menu is extensive enough to have something for all occasions, and the wine list was praised by a friend who is a highly qualified taster. I can vouch for the range and quality of the real ales, which are well kept, while my wife enjoys the guest ciders in summer and the mulled wine in winter. The quality and quantity of the food is excellent - pick a dish served with vegetables and you'll immediately get your 'Five a Day'! There's a separate pie menu, all home made and very tasty, especially with all the veg on the side. And prices are very modest - try the mezes: choose four dishes from a long list for just £10. Tackle it on your own if you're very hungry, but you can easily share it as a main course, then you're more likely to have room for one of the current range of desserts, which usually includes some old fashioned favourites. And I haven't mentioned the weekly special evenings, - such as Pie & A Pint or Cheap and Cheerful - which are real bargains. Our only problem is that the Red Lion has spoiled us for other places, which rarely compare with the value we get here.

I'm surprised previous reviews haven't commented on the fact that they have live music at this pub. My wife and I were there on a Wednesday recently and found an excellent folk trio playing in the top room. We'd gone for dinner, but ended up staying for the evening to listen: apparently this trio are there regularly on Wednesdays and were very informal - also unamplified (!) which we liked as it didn't stop people chatting if they weren't there for the music. We will go back again on a Wednesday, and I saw from some notices on the wall that other folk groups play there on two Tuesdays a month. We'll look out for them as well in future. We enjoyed our dinner too. (Nice steak).

The house red was exactly what you would get in any bar. I doubt that the owner can be making any money on the food, I have attached 2 photos of what we had. The one plate was £10.00 and my breakfast was less than £8.00. The owner can easily address their prices as I would have paid more. I don't understand the negative reviews below. None of them were my experience. Well done, and I will certainly tell my friends about it and go back.

Oh dearie dearie me..........such a shame when a fond old pub you've been going to for many years takes a turn for the worse. This has always been a pit stop for many going to Shoreham airport, coming back from the races, on the way to football or just off to Brighton for the day. Always busy, impossible to park, no free tables, great food, wonderful service, this was one of those gems of a pub.And now, so sad - the crowds have gone, the service is poor, the glasses are dirty, the food is average and takes forever to get to you......let's hope that in the future someone can take it by the scruff of the neck and shake the life back into it - I for one love this old pub and would love to see it restored to it's former glory and then we can all enjoy it again. In the meantime, farewell old friend.......

On discovering the Downs link was looking for a great pub to stop for Sunday lunch. Was going to try one out in Bramber but discovered this 14th century pub in Shoreham thought we would try it out as customer for dogs. Great little pub with low beams but in serious need of tlc. Ordered our Sunday dinner, beef, chicken, lamb and pork which is a great choice but just seemed to be chucked on plate with not much care. It was ok my stuffing & Yorkshire pudding was a little burnt but vegetables good choice. Decided to try pudding but none of them were homemade which was a little disappointing. Overall if I was visiting this way again I don't think we will be rushing back. I'd think about cycling back the 5 mile and try out the ones in Bramber.

Visited place with family and ordered food but on first impression place seemed like a nice little pub with a traditional feel, but wasn't overly impressed with the price vs quality of food.. Was a decision between longshore and this place and was surprised for a Sunday to find the place completely empty. Being the only people ordering food it took ages to get food served to us and noticed the same person who served us at the till also dealing with the cooking in the kitchen and also playing pokemon go, and serving other customers. Once food arrived I wasn't impressed with it as appeared very tasteless and seemed deep fried which made me believe food is potentially frozen and not fresh. My fiancé ordered his food that arrived with the garlic bread on ordinary bread and burnt beyond recognition but he enjoyed the meal with came with. I was told the toilets aren't the greatest as you look out into the garden whilst going and people can look in.Tried a pudding that appeared a million times quicker than the meal but not overly impressed with it either.. I think in future will either drive up to bramber and visit better pub food there or stick to longshore as the food quality and level of service is a lot better.. So on that note, would I return??? Not anytime soon and wouldn't rule out ever again but needs massive improvements with customer service and food quality... If its empty next time will politely exit and go elsewhere...

Had the "tapas " style dishes which is a absolute bargain as 4 dishes for a tenner. Really lovely food and good quantity. Excellent. Quirky barmaid giving good customer service however the barman needs training up a bit as put my lemon I my glass with his hands urgh. All in all a good visit. Well done will be back.

I've been here a few times and it never disappoints. This time it was for my Birthday lunch and despite the weather being awful we were soon sat at our table ready to choose our food. We all chose off the "4 for £10" menu. You make four choices off the light bite/starter menu & it only costs you £10!!! Amazing value & delicious. There were 7 of us and as my picture shows we only just fitted it all on our table. If its busy you could have a bit of a wait, but bear in mind that if you all have the offer they have to cook 4 dishes per person! But I would definitely say its worth the wait. I highly recommend this place. The reason for only 4 stars is the toilets leave a bit to be desired.

Having been to the beer festival the week before (which was good), thought we would drop in again for a pint of real ale. Absolutely disgusting doesn't even come close to describing it! This pub is in a prime position and has so much potential. Probably ok for food, lager or wine but there is no excuse for not knowing the condition of the ale you are serving.

Poor, uncooked food. Terrible attitude. Our dad was very embarrassed as it was his treat. The table opposite also sent food back because it was cold! Poor effort chef!

Buddha bowl, not that much and rather bland, delicious "smoothie" though but all round quite pricey. Its a little dark but a window table makes it OK. Wouldn't go back!
