The Real Eating Company Cafe in Chichester

We recently visited on a Friday afternoon, c.3.00, for a tea & coffee before moving on. Despite only 2 other occupied tables, neither of which was being served, we waited some while for our drinks. Throughout the whole time we were unfortunate enough to suffer the very loudly spoken counter staff telling each other of the time they had opened up with a drunken colleague. All highly amusing no doubt but not very professional and not a good reflection on the cafe. Have not rated as one star as drinks were ultimately ok as has been the case on previous visits but will be very unlikely to return again.

Today we popped in and had a lovely brunch relaxing on one of the settees. The staff, especially Daemon, were very friendly and helpful and even cooked our dog a sausage at no charge which she loved. Will definitely be going back again!

We ordered a pot of tea and two toasties. We waited quite a long time for it to arrive, and the toasties eventually came, I asked the server if the tea would be long to which she replied she only had one pair of hands. As the toasties were poor value and not very nice, the tea was good, and the server was down right rude, we will not be going there again.

Poor, unhygienic, bad service, bland coffee, expensive food.Avoid this place, much better options available elsewhere

Poor if I’m honest. First I noticed small fruit flies crawling all over the pastries at the counter. The service wasn’t great. Friendly enough but a bit chaotic with only two staff on duty. Our coffee took over ten minutes to arrive, both it and the toasties went on a tour of the restaurant whilst the hapless waitress asked who’d ordered them. Our coffees were put on the table of the folk at the next table before being picked up and given to us. They’d stood so long they were luke warm when we’d got them and the taste was bland. The toasties were adequate I suppose, as was my slice of cake. I’d expect much more for £29.00. We won’t return, nor would I recommend it to anyone else, there’s vastly better options in Chichester.

NEVER AGAIN will I go into this place. Mugs were no more than half full. Staff member brought drinks to table and almost threw them at us, we had to ask for spoons and it was like we had asked for the world!!!

We had a really bad experience. For a start the toilet is in a bad state. The floor was covered in water and the walls were dirty like it hadnt been cleaned. My latte had no froth and was very average. Someone pulled the alarm in the toilet, by accident. The staff made no attempt to turn it off and so everyone had to sit there whilst this alarm went off. After about ten minutes someone asked the staff about the noise and they didnt seem to know how to turn it off.

We went to the one on north street and there was no chef so we went to the one on east street and payment machine was not working and of course, they do not take cash.

Poor service and cleanliness issues. Visited this morning for breakfast. Took around 45 minutes for food to arrive despite it being quiet. Food poor. Grilled tomato was not cooked and the beans were stone cold. Tables dirty and did not see staff clearing or cleaning tables leaving customers to clear themselves upon arrival. Latte not bad however the cup was dirty and no teaspoons or saucers which I found strange. Did not attempt to drink the glass of water as the glass was filthy. Got another which was equally filthy. £13.50 for a below par full English, I feel robbed and should have gone elsewhere. Used the toilet upon leaving. Stank of urine and didn’t look as though it had been cleaned for a very long time. Don’t waste your money here is my advice. Safe to say we will not be back.

Really glad I went here I was quite empty when I arrived at 9am and packed solid when I left I had the full English 3 fried eggs 2 sausage beans tomato 5 bits of bacon don't know if that's normal 2 bits of toast nice butter lovely pot of tea all really well cooked the place was nice and clean and the staff were brilliant especially the dark haired lady who was really friendly and efficient I don't know what the other reviews on here are on about you won't get a better quality breakfast in Chichester for 15 quid than this well done I will be back

unfortunately we didn’t have a great experience here. tables were all dirty, not one was clean. when we sat down and our food was brought over, the table was cleared but not wiped so still had crumbs and general dirt all over it. food menu choice was good, we went for toasties and croissants. could offer more choices for soft drinks. i was given a glass of ice, and the glass was dirty. there was also a member of staff sat on the table behind us, i assume on their break. she went back to work and didn’t even clean her own table!! so the staff clearly don’t care about the presentation of the cafe. with more organisation and cleanliness, this place would be so much better. won’t visit again

Wouldn’t recommend! The table was dirty, it had old mugs on and crumbs everywhere! I waited 35 minutes for my full English breakfast, I asked for crispy bacon. When it came the bacon was hardly cooked, I asked if it could be a little crispier. My mistake!! I then waited another 15 minutes and my breakfast was not in sight. I went to the counter they couldn’t locate the breakfast, turns out they had given it to another customer. I requested a refund rightly so, they didn’t apologise. Will never be going there again!!

Poor show. Used this place many times before, sudden change of staff and now this café has hit rock-bottom. Ordered two breakfasts to include one vegetarian with poached eggs, we were warned by the waiter it would take approx thirty mins. Five mins later, two meat breakfasts with fried eggs were brought to us by a very young girl. We explained this was wrong, she promised to 'fix it' and would come straight back. Smiling on return, she brought the same breakfast back with a gap on the plate, the meat had simply been removed, no sign of any smashed avocado!! At this point the orignal waiter intervened and now explained they were unable to poach eggs due to lack of vinegar, would I like an extra mushroom as consolation! The other breakfast had approx 7 baked beans swimming in a pool of tomato sauce! Most of the food was cold. Scabby enamel teapot, dirty menu and toilet facilities no better. £31.50 rip off!! A full on Fawlty Towers experience, without the laughs..

Absolutely shocking service and food there is no way the cooks where qualified took over an hour to do a simple breakfast which was under cooked and cold. Avoid at all costs.

Terrible, service non existence. Took 20 for drinks and sandwiches to arrive. Poor oerson who came in fir a pot of tea was told don't have ordinary tea. Considering all they offer is drinks and sandwiches I am at a loss to understand why it is so hard to provide. Will not return and the managers need to look hard at this establishment

Myself and my wife visited today, they had no regular breakfast tea at all, so I ordered a breakfast and mocha, wifey had toastie and white hot chocolate. Both cups were filthy ! My mocha undrinkable, the breakfast luke warm, swimming in grease physically had to dab the plate with a napkin to soak it up, they also stated they could not do poached eggs despite it on the menu, and the food sat badly in my stomach, £30 between us and we would've been better off in Weatherspoons !. The female member of staff was pleasant however the other two staff members had long scruffy unkempt hair, one members hair was hanging down to their belly button, no hair nets and the uniform/ dress code was shabby and unprofessional. Milk delivery on show, a real shame to what it used to be, AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Don’t go here! It’s rare of me to post a really negative comment but avoid this place at all cost. Can you imagine going to a cafe that doesn’t have tea bags! Ordered a couple of mains - bacon butties and melts. We were told of delays but after 40 minutes had to give up and go back to work. Felt sorry for female waitress as she had no-one to rely on and total lack of support. Such a shame as one of the few local independents in Chichester but you need to get your act together!

It's gone a long way downhill - not busy, but two toasties took a very long time. All 3 of the staff on duty had long untidy hair which should have been contained in suitable headgear. The toilet was awash with urine and clearly hasn't been cleaned in living memory. There was no toilet paper, just a few paper napkins. Numerous items unavailable eg butter, soup! Food when it eventually arrived was OK. Looks like a business on the verge of collapse

This was our first visit and initial impressed by the interior. Sat at table-menu was grubby. We ordered Eggs Benedict and a pot of Tea. Meal rather cold as hollandaise was cold. Pot of tea good, but no tea spoon or cutlery, which was eventual bought but desert spoons to stir our tea, I had to get tea spoons from counter. Pot for cutlery and serviettes on table but empty. Toilet hand dryer not working. Noticed staff preparing food had no rubber gloves to handle food and 'manager' was handling a variety of breads and buns with bear hands. Could be a nice place--HO needs a spot visit to shake them up--tables need regularly clearing!!

After our previous experience we should not have returned. I wanted to pay by cash and they only accept cards. Their machine should accept Apple Pay but although my app ‘ticked’ their till didn’t! Ended up using card, no real problem but annoying. The previous time we visited my complaint was about the lack of filling in their sandwiches. Today I had a toasted ham and cheese sandwich, the first half of the sandwich was fine. The second half of the sandwich was virtually filling free. The café was not busy. In fact it was virtually empty, but we still waited 20 minutes for our sandwiches to be toasted absolutely dire situation.

Well done to Rachel & Jake who were holding the fort today. I went in for brunch and to write using a laptop. It was quiet so I thought it would be just the right place to sit for a bit. I ordered an all day breakfast and pot of tea. Half the seating was closed because there were only 2 staff. Fair enough and good for them as things got busy pretty soon after that! My reason for leaving a review was to thank Rachel & Jake for their good sense, excellent service and calm approach. The breakfast was very nicely presented and tested very good. My only complaint is this: THE TEAPOT!! To the owner/manager: PLEASE revamp or preferably replace these awful, chipped, dirty looking tin teapots. Awful. These two excellent employees are getting complaints about them. It’s not fair to them and as a customer, I won’t order a pot of tea again unless there’s a change!

We went in here as Neros was full of people & dogs. We missed the sign that it was dog friendly, more of that later. We ordered two coffees and two danish, were given danish and the coffee was to be brought to table. It wasn’t busy, the wait for the coffee was long and the staff were working very slowly. We asked where the coffee was after 15mins & still waited longer, if we hadn’t paid we would have walked out. To top it off two smelly pugs were brought in and sat near us, as we left the French bulldog had urinated on the floor inside by the front entrance where it’s owners were sitting. Costa has a sign that says guide dogs only, which is fine with me, however the sense of entitlement with dog owners that their unhygienic pets should go everywhere with them is beyond me. Hygiene rating here cannot be very high. Never again, avoid unless you are a dog owner

Popped in here for a coffee, whilst taking a break from shopping. Said we would be sitting outside and were told it would be in paper cups in that case, due to breakages and thefts of cups. I said to the guy behind the counter, 'So that makes everyone either clumsy or thieves?" He relied, "Yeah, I suppose so". And with that attitude, it is the one and only time we will frequent that establishment. In all honesty, the coffee was sub-standard and I'd rather have a Costa. At least they let you sit outside with a grown ups cup!

Lovely friendly cafe with the best cakes! Plentiful comfortable range of seating. Very reasonable prices. Extremely lovely staff. Totally recommend this cafe for a quick snack or a drink. You won't be disappointed.

If we had gone into the toilets before ordering we would have walked straight out again. The toilet are simply disgusting and deserve a visit from the local public health department. How a food establishment can provide facilities that are so unhygienic is beyond me....

Ordered a large latte and eggs on toast with bacon. Both delicious and filling. Generous portions, very friendly service and the place has a very sustainable friendly approach.

Went in for lunch, asked to wait until a large enough table was free so sat on bench near counter. Whilst there someone known to the staff walked past us, eating a snack bar, and not wearing a mask, and proceeded to go behind the counter and chat to staff, leaning over the food they were preparing. Unhygienic at the best of times but during the Covid situation we are in totally unacceptable. My son was hungry though so we stayed and ordered two all day breakfasts and one mac and cheese. These arrived so quickly they were clearing not prepared fresh, the breakfast was ok but had obviously been sitting keeping hot for a while. The Mac and cheese came in a cardboard pot, even though we were eating in, and was a very small portion, even for an 11 year old. We had asked for adults meals for all three of us. Won’t bother again.

Always try and visit here, friendly staff, nice food and drink and a breath of fresh air compared to the likes of the ‘big three’ that can be found everywhere.

Wow where to start. FANTASTIC staff, great coffee and a really nice atmosphere. Look forward to going back as the cake was delectable, Felt really safe as well with brilliant covid measures. Five stars

I had a tuna cucumber baguette, my partner had a ham and cheese. It was delicious! Service was excellent, the girls who served us were very friendly. I recommend it!

We were looking for a cafe and felt attracted to this one. It promotes the fact that it is independent and the staff seemed to show a pride in where they work. Covid measures were in place, including tracing sign-in. The premises are light and airy, with high ceilings - you don't feel crammed in. Coffee was hot, the teapot was huge, the teacakes tasty. Looking round, it was clear that this place is loved locally and well patronised.

This sounded great on the face of it and the veggie breakfasts look interesting but we wanted a sandwich to take away for lunch so chose from the reasonably limited selection in the chill cabinet. We had tuna with thick slices of cucumber and although it tasted good and the baguette bread was nice, the thick cucumber slices turned out to be a few half slices - a weird meanness, we thought. We had black coffee in - good flavour and hot. The service was underwhelming though. A shame really because it could have been so nice.

Ordered both breakfasts vegetarian and full English, not much for the money paid, eggs are advertised as fresh free range on the board but tasted like powdered eggs, neither of us enjoyed the eggs and beans on the full English were cold.

Ordered a full English and tea. £8.50 saw me receive an enormous plate of food and a whole pot of tea. Food was fresh cooked but still arrived within 5 minutes of me ordering. 3 enormous local, delicious sausages, 3 rashers of the best tasting bacon I've had in ages, beans, scrambled egg and sourdough toast. All tasted fantastic. I would recommend ordering a half breakfast as the full one is massive. Very pleasant atmosphere and surroundings. Service was superb.

During Covid 19 restrictions half the tables were shut and a quarter were occupied by selfish idiots using the tables as a home office. No staff were managing anything at all. New customers walk in , get ignored and walk out while single occupants monopolize a table for four to operate their laptop business. As for the food , it is a good job that the government were paying half the bill because that is about all it is worth. My breakfast consisted of the world's smallest egg , recooked bacon so brittle it shattered, baked beans straight out of the tin , minus heat, two lovely sausages and a slice of bread. Normal price £8.25. My wife had a breakfast with spinach which had not been shown any heat at all and taken from a salad package that I guess was at least 2 days past expiry. Again £8.25 , worth about £4. Lovely coffees. You need to wake up. It is a tough old world to trade in at present and you are not cutting it.!!

I would not normally eat in a "chain " restaurant in a High Street but there seemed to be few places open in Chichester. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Real Eating Co provided a very good meal at a fair price. Staff were very friendly and I felt the cafe was quite spacious. My Full Breakfast was huge and much better value than one finds at a greasy spoon. Good coffee. I think this place gets quite busy but when I went just after midday in the middle of the week it was quiet. The sausages and bacon were clearly of good quality. Perhaps a smaller sized breakfast could have been offered. I will certainly come back here again.

Popped in for lunch, was our second choice as Charlie Harper’s was closed. The service was fine, the drinks arrived, a pot of tea for me with a filthy milk jug which I took back and exchanged to a slightly cleaner 1. The cutlery that was bought out with the sandwiches was also grubby. The food was fine but not amazing. In a time when establishments should be bending over backwards to keep everything clean and hygienic this establishment needs to try harder especially as on a day like today when you are not full and have time to keep your standards high.

Lovely little cafe visited with my young son and we felt very welcome. The coffee was really nice and my and my son shared a tasty chocolate brownie! The staff were really friendly and interacted with my little boy which is always a plus with a unruly toddler

Really awful food, tuna mayonnaise and cucumber baguette was truly dreadful hard cold baguette thin microscopic smear of tuna mayonnaise two slices of cucumber. Really the worst meal I have had for a very long time. Steer well clear of this ghastly eatery.

Staff are always lovely, some of the best baristas in Chichester so the coffee is always amazing, and the food is fresh and really good :) yoghurt and black current flapjack is to die for!

I didn't enjoy my visit here. I thought this place may serve a decent breakfast so I went. Tables all about, menu's on tablets and waiting staff walking about.So I logically thought it was table service. I sat down and looked at the menu.Cooked breakfasts, toasties with coleslaw etc.Anyway, I waited and waited. No one came to take my order.I check the menu and looked around and nothing to tell you that it was not table service.So, eventually working it out myself and feeling an idiot, I left my table to go up to the counter to order.I joined a queue of customers.Upon my turn I asked for a toasted ham sandwich only to be rudely told that I had to go to the cabinet on the way in (which I had not noticed) to pick up my raw sandwich and give it to the woman behind the counter to heat up for me.By now i'd given up the will to live.I said to the woman that they should have signs up saying you need to collect and order your food first and there was nothing to tell you this.Additionally, why bother to have menu's on the table?The woman just looked at me and rudely said "I don't see the problem"I just walked out.If they are going to have a Starbucks type of service, at least make it obvious.Totally crap place, rude staff, won't return

I am rather surprised at some of the negative reviews. I have so far taken my Mum to over 180 different local places for coffee. We came here and Mum said "I like this place and the coffee is very good".There was disabled parking close by in the car park, easy access and a toilet available. We had planned to go to another cafe close by but could not get the wheelchair up steps. They recommended this cafe which was easy to get into. There was no intrusive music or other loud noise that we get in many cafes.We shall soon try the one at Gunwharf, Portsmouth. Thank you.

I have visited here many times and have been impressed. The coffee is great, the bacon sandwiches are delicious and the staff are just lovely! Definitely the best way to start the day before a long day of work.

We popped in for a quick cuppa and although it looks inviting as soon as we went to sit down it felt very grubby to me. The floor was littered with food and napkins. Tables weren’t cleared or cleaned properly and the place was virtually empty. The drinks were ok but on our table was a screw topped jar containing sugar. There was no way I’d use that - it looked revolting. The sugar was solid and it looked like many double dipped teaspoons had been in it. The loo was grim. I can’t imagine how they got five hygiene stars but it needs a good clean. I also don’t like to see food without a sneeze guard of some kind where people queue. Sorry - it’s a no from me.

Nice idea badly executed. Has all the look about it of an independent cafe that I am always keen to support amongst all the big chains elsewhere on the high street. But once inside it is dirty, tables not cleared. 2 overworked staff, long wait for a pot of tea, lamp not working. Go somewhere else this is disappointing.

Went for breakfast, asked a few questions, the young lady at counter was friendly and explained a few items really nicely and made a recommendation. Drinks range was good and again explained as if we were the only customers...which we weren’t! Discovered a stumpie. The food and drink was gorgeous and again waitress couldn't have been more friendly and interested in us, she even gave treats to our dog who accompanied us! Would recommend to anyone.

After visiting many times I am disgusted at the quality and service of the food and drink.

Friendly staff, the breakfast was huge, so it is a real meal, good coffee, the waitress did forget the juice, only minor slip, I would recommend more staff for Saturdays, One of the best sausages. Keep improving you are doing so well.

Packed house again this Sunday as usual but this is causing them real problems. Firstly, the cutlery was obviously in need of a good wash, still showing signs of food stuck in the forks and greasy smears on the knives, and no tea spoons or condiments on our table. Our food was OK but just not hot enough. The staff looked rushed off their feet trying to keep up with the number of customers coming in for a snack or lunch. I felt quite sorry for them but they do need to get themselves sorted out before it all goes horribly wrong.

Thought I would eat lunch here but was disappointed with the selection of sandwiches left at 2pm. There were very few tables that were available and those that were free had plates from the previous people still there. Someone came and took some of the plates after a while but left some saying he would return, he never did. Sandwiches took quite a while to be served, still dirty dishes were not removed and table not wiped. The sandwiches were very tasty, but we had nearly finished them by the time the coffees arrived in paper cups as they had run out of china cups. All in all we paid to dine in but did not enjoy a reasonable dine in service. Disappointing and not relaxing as so many tables people were banging into us.

We visited here with our two children and will never go back. The staff were rude and service was poor. There were dirty uncleared tables all over and the floor was floor.

I was delighted to find an establishment that serves an "all day breakfast" as usually, very annoyingly, in this country, it appears one shouldn't want breakfast after 11am!! However, for some "technical" reason, this was unavailable on the day I visited. However, as it was around lunchtime anyway, I decided to stay and have their macaroni cheese dish served with a lovely crunchy coleslaw. I have to say that it was absolutely delicious and filled me up for the rest of the day. Also, unusually, there was a water dispenser, so no need to buy a plastic bottle! Highly recommended.

Not usually one to write a complaining review but I’ve visited this place a few times now and think their practises are questionable. They have pastries, cakes and the like on display but they aren’t covered with any lids/cases so they’re open to the elements. In the summer I saw flies landing all over the food which put me right off!

Veggie and full English breakfasts were really delicious and we couldn’t finish them! Great coffee and a nice relaxed atmosphere - the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning.

Me, my mum and sister went in here for lunch, which was nice. My sister is in a wheelchair and she went to the toilet. The toilet seat was not fixed to the toilet so my sister nearly fell off it luckily I was there to stop her.

Popped in here for lunch we had the sausage sandwich and for me the Macoroni cheese which tasted good, service good, staff pleasant, does have WiFi so ask for password, quite large on ground floor and not to busy.

The coffee was of good quality and taste. Great selection of food. Very good service. Plenty of seating area.

A pleasant enough cafe where we had tea (pot accommodated enough for 3 cups each) and a snack, all was decent enough, nothing exceptional, but nothing to take issue with.

I was really pleasantly surprised having not been in this cafe for over 20 years. What a lovely breakfast to set you up for the day.

The only reason I have given 2 stars is because of the food and the young girl that works there.

We've been here several times before and earlier this year reported a very below par experience. On this occasion however, the coffee was good (temperature & strength) and the service was commendably quick. We'd only just sat down and our coffees arrived, delivered with a smile (always good to see!). The staff were friendly & chatty and the tables were cleared and cleaned promptly. A good improvement, keep it up.

We visted the real eating company whilst in Chichester, i liked the idea of fresh local produce being used, the food was okay, but the staff seemed not to understand the menu and ordering food and drinks wasnt easy, i wanted a simple toasty on brown bread, for some reason i had to get a white bread one and get the staff to swop the bread, why only do white bread toasties? the staff were friendly if somewhat stretched, one young girl tooks and eggs benedict for a walk around the resturant quite a few times, all in all the resturant lacked something. Maybe some staff training would help.

Thought we would try this establishment for a coffee and cake. It was fantastic. The cocunut milk cappachino is one of the nicest I have had and the Vic cake was scrumptious!

The food we all had was tasty and fresh. The prices weren’t cheap but the quality was good. Service at the till was fine. No check back during eating and had to clear our table to start with but not a major issue.

I ordered the full English. They don’t ask you how you would like eggs done. They also don’t include tomatoes or mushrooms which is very strange to me. It’s not a FULL english if it has missing ingredients. It’s so basic and looked terrible on the plate. Beans were ok. The scrambled egg was the worst I have had. Must be powder egg or very poorly made. The bacon tasted like a dirty oven or grill. That flavour is still with me now. I have felt ill

We went in here as it was a local and looked intriguing and the coffee was great. We also had a cinnamon pastry which was also lovely. My only problem was being jammed in amongst the tables. I realise they need the customers in but a bit of space would have been lovely.
