The Raj Indian Bar and Restaurant in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

We were staying nearby and found this lovely restaurant at the quay. The food was delicious and the portions were very generous. Also the staff were very polite and attentive. We would definitely eat there again! Would recommend to anyone! Comfortable dining.

Well presented, tasty Indian. Had a lamb jalfrezi. Some Indians tone down the spices for western tastes but jalfrezi tricky for them to do that unless they use chillies that aren't hot. Generally a good bet so you can decide whether to pick the chillies out or not yourself although some places chop them up then it wouldn't be a jalfrezi... No complaints although I did wonder whether a source had been used or whether our pickle tray left over went in. Wine good. It does have a license. Veggie option was also said to be good. Both dishes plenty of fresh vegetables had been used. Vegetable rice was good. Got to have your five a day or ten. Dry spices not detected as you find in some curry houses. Turn into a Himalayan curry. Fine if the restaurant is called that. Naan good. Passed on desert, full. You won't go hungry. No side effects.

Had a takeaway from here and really please we did. Good value, good food and the front of house team were very attentive and friendly whilst I ordered it. We enjoyed a chicken korma, a chicken and chana balti and a mixed tandoori starter with nan and rice. It wasn’t the best curry I’ve eaten but for the price was worth 5 stars. There isn’t a massive amount of choice in north Cornwall but this place is worth a go

We enjoyed our meal last night (19th) the staff were smartly dressed and friendly. My wife had the chefs special duck dish and I had the chilli chicken Balti both dishes had a great depth of flavour. My dish was described as hot and certainly was exactly what I wanted but talk to your waiter to ensure it suits your taste. I thought the meal was excellent value We will return

I understand that Bodmin is not the culinary capital of Cornwall let alone elsewhere in the UK but I will explain my score. The food is perfectly fine for an Indian takeaway but it is not authentic. I have ordered before once or twice in the past for takeaway (I have not dined in) and I will likely order again at some point I should say first of all. My biggest gripe is ordering saag paneer and having no paneer cheese every time, just a creamy spinach (saag or spinach is by the by for my palette but paneer is readily available almost everywhere). It just makes me wonder where else corners are cut. Service was prompt but abrupt with no attempt to be personable and even answering the phone while talking to me and cutting me off. Five stars on atmosphere as the restaurant is well maintained and decorated to a high standard.

My son persuaded me to 'go local' - normally eat Indian food in Bodmin. My Dansak was poor - supposed to have a sweetness, not apparent and spicy but bland. His Malay pineapple was totally bland with one tiny piece of pineapple - even mild curry should have flavour. The pickle tray was very good and staff attentive - why it gets a two. Portions are large but bulked out with 'gravy'. Sorry in future will use the car.

We enjoyed an excellent curry in the Raj restaurant. Lamb madras and vegetarian main with side orders were very tasty, good sized portions and good service. Would recommend.

We passed The Raj the previous evening whilst on our way to a restaurant nearby and the aroma encouraged us to visit for a takeaway the following day. We weren't disappointed. The starters and mains were all very good and highly recommended. Our visit was at opening time for the evening and we were served quickly.

Friday night but very quiet, staff were friendly but spent more time on their phones than doing their jobs. Main course dhansak tasted burnt & rest of meal was uninspiring. Not cheap either

Amazingly delicious food, fantastic service and all round good vibes. Cosy comfy seating areas too. Really lovely experience, will definitely be back.

Nice location of the restaurant Clean food wasn't good very watery and bland but just about edible. Service was excellent.

Having had alot of takeaways here over the last 10 years this most recent one was awful chips were almost stale curry was nothing like it should have been up there with the top 3 worst curries I've had.

Excellent meal here last night. Polite, attentive staff and wonderful food. My husband said his lamb was the tenderest he had eaten for a long time. My chicken was excellent.

So I must admit I wasn't expecting much from this place as the standard isn't normally great in Cornwall but we were pleasantly surprised. It's not the typical decor/ atmosphere for an Indian restaurant but the food was good. We are from the Midlands where curries are 👌🏻 so it would be unfair to compare with that but if you want a decent curry while on holiday then this is definitely worth a try!

It seriously pains me to write this as we have been very very loyal customers for many years but standards in terms of food quality seems to have slipped considerably and we feel corners are being cut. We had a takeaway menu for 4 people last night £(£91). First disappointment was the poppadoms - they were either stale or cooked in old oil but just tasted awful. It’s such a basic to provide good poppadoms. The rest of the meal wasn’t great - too much onion and not enough meat or prawns. Also has got hugely expensive now. Sorry - we have always enjoyed our meals with you in the past but the other curry house in Wadebridge presents better value and food at Tiny Thai also presents far better value and quality. We won’t be coming back now as last two meals have been very disappointing. We have probably spent thousands of you over the years - you need to get yourself back to how you were.

Read reviews before going, and have to admit we did question our choice. upon arrival, we were greeted by the chap that was allegedly rude etc. Didn’t find him rude at all, just very respectful and proficient. We arrived on time and met at the door then shown to a table. The restaurant was not busy, perhaps only one other table occupied. On being shown to the table I spoke with the waiter of a very specific dietary requirement, which I repeated more than once and was again, very specific. I was assured that my request was able to be met, that the specific ingredient, nor any derivatives is not used anywhere in their meal preparation. Drinks were ordered of which my choice was not available. I had the house red and the others in my party various other drinks. These were delivered by a very bored looking and somewhat disheveled man. Popadoms and sauces were good and then main dishes ordered. These arrived and upon serving I could clearly see the very ingredient that I had so clearly specified to have a problem with. One other meal at our table also had this ingredient which I had been assured is not used in any of their meals. I drew attention to this and despite the initial bafflement my meal was taken away and informed that another will be prepared without said ingredient. This arrived shortly after. My hopes of enjoying Indian cuisine were shattered. The meal was bland, watery and boring. It was however edible and so I ate it. On receiving the bill both me and my wife felt that some adjustment ought to have been made, it wasn’t at that point and neither was an apology offered until pointed out. The bill was reduced to the figure that my wife stated, the restaurant was cash only due to a problem. We will be in Wadebridge again, perhaps later in the year. We will avoid this awful restaurant. Once bitten!

I like acurry and jave eaten a llt of indian food South of Birmingham. Unfortunately this one was woefully lacking in EVERY respect. We arrrived on a Bank holiday Sunday and were 'greeted' by our waiter who showed us to our table. Sadly no smile or welcome and really felt more of a hindrance than paying guests. We ordered starters and complemented our host on the papadums/chutneys, asking whether they were homemade. The waiter took offence and walked off muttering and gesturing in a hostile manner. Our order included 3 chicken mains and a bindhi bhaji side. Sadly all of the chicken dishes were nasty, uniform 'processed cubes' and all tasted the same. The sauces were horribly overloaded with sugar and coconut. The bindhi was the worst I've ever tasted and had been cooked in stale oil. Ingredient quality overall, 2 out of 10. Sadly nobody asked if we were happy with our food despite the place being very quite. I went to pay at the counter and another waiter was fiddling around with the Bt connection to get it to connect. Sadly it failed so he snatched my card to try to 'swipe' a payment. During the pregnant pause he pipes up.. 'everything ok mate?' NO,, EVERYTHING DEFINITELY NOT OK MATE,,,, BUT A BIT LATE NOW!!!!

Lovely welcome . Friendly staff . Great food . The rice was fluffy . The nans freshly made and delicious. We all had something different and we all enjoyed our meals from a chicken tikka masala ( lovely ) to a madras with a good kick to it . We had a good evening and will be back .

Disappointed to say the least. My curry was watery and husbands was pretty tasteless. Considering the price and no delivery- collection only. Wouldn’t recommend.

We ordered a takeaway from here on 14/02 as a treat as to collect the order is a 25 mile round trip! When we arrived home and started to plate up the food, some of it was missing. I called the restaurant to report this and the lady who answered the phone was incredibly rude, told me she was busy and to call back the next day. I called during the day as advised, no answer. I then called at 5pm and again she answered, very abruptly and reminded her of why I was calling to request my refund. After a debate on this It was agreed that I would get a full refund of the order as I would need to travel again to visit the restaurant to arrange for this. I have visited there this morning and to be expected a very rude and unhelpful person at the restaurant who reluctantly unlocked the door to speak to me and would not help with the refund I had been promised. I will NEVER visit this restaurant again (please not the vegetarian food we had was like a stew with no flavour whatsoever) but apart from that the customer service is the worst. No refund for me and more money for them.

We had a takeaway curry. It was a straightforward order but naan breads got completely missed off. We didnt realise until we got home. Irritating, but staff apologised when phoned and bill amended accordingly. Food we did get tasted great as usual.

This is really a lovely restaurant with even lovelier staff, who were even kind enough to take us back to our hotel as we were not sure of the area.Really kind people, fab food and nice atmosphere. Would definitely go back again and would thoroughly recommend!It was long before Jan 2020 that we visited the Raj but like I say, this is a long overdue review!

We were staying in Padstow and wanted an Indian takeaway and after looking for reviews on TripAdvisor we decided to order from The Raj. We were pleased we had! We ordered via phone and the gentleman we spoke to couldn’t have been more polite and helpful. We asked to collect later that evening and when we arrived we only had to wait a minute or so for our order. The food was piping hot and was still hot when we got back to our caravan in Padstow (15 minutes). The curries / naans we had were delicious (Chicken and Aubergine Balti and a Chicken and Spinach Balti) and the accompanying breads / dips were lovely.We wouldn’t hesitate to order again and next time we are on the North Coast we will be back!

Had a couple of curries from here and they were of good quality. Only downside was there wasn't a lot of meat in the curry but what there was was of good quality and tasted nice. Not bad.

This was our second visit to Wadebridge in the last month. We had been told a great many positive things about The Raj by local friends. We were very eager to have our first restaurant curry since the start of lock down and as seasoned curry 'experts' our expectations were high. I am delighted to say that we were not disappointed and in fact was one of the best Indian meals we have every had! This combined with the friendly and hospitable service made the food taste even better (if that was at all possible!). When we are back in the area we will most certainly make a special visit again. A sincere thank you to all staff.

Only doing takeaway at the moment and our food was hot and delicious. We had a couple of non-standard curries which were both really tasty and not greasy like some can be. We also had a slight misunderstanding on our part ordering chicken for our 5 year old girl and the customer service to prepare new food (chicken and rice separate and not missed together) was quick and unfussy. Highly recommended.

We stay in Rock for a week or two every year - never eaten here before but it was so good we went back twice! Staff were friendly and the owner clearly took great pride in the place. Food was rich and very tasty, and it arrived bang on time - well worth a visit for a meal in or a takeaway.

Booked this for my daughter's 18th. Food was very nice and good value. We was spaced out well because of Covid. Only doing five tables per sitting. Love the food here, come back time and time again.

Very good Anglo-Indian curry takeaway. Raj Chicken Morris very tasty, as was the kebab starter. We had missing items which they refunded straight away. Pricing meant the review was four star.

Open for take aways only right now but lovely food - distinctive but quite subtle flavours, fresh and vibrant, good textures (not swimming in ghee or oil), all cooked to perfection. Nice staff too.

My husband and I then my Daughter and her boyfriend all decided we would have a little treat and have a take away curry, we have used the Raj before and have always top rated it, however we had the Malaya chicken, Chicken Bhuna, Chicken korma and lemon rice, the chicken was a bit chewy and not tender, tasteless dishes with a lot of orange grease on the top, I really don’t know how they got it so wrong? We normally eat the lot but not on this occasion, most of it went in the bin (such a waste) the dishes just did not taste how they should, I normally make my own by using the curry gravy recipe and I know how the different curry’s should taste, maybe lack of quality ingredients? If that’s the case then wait until you can source them before opening. It’s such a shame as when we had our last one last year it was amazing and we have always highly recommended the Raj!

Reliably fantastic food... great flavours and well cooked. A very, very good Indian that serves fantastic food everytime.

This restaurant is on the end corner of otherwise dissimilar quayside businesses such as car repairs etc., and it appears to have been repurposed; that may explain it's slightly unusual position and why it is heated by portable gas appliances. However, once inside it is warm, tastefully decorated in a modern, minimal fashion and quite spacious.Our order was taken quickly and the food arrived promptly to the table; both of our dishes were piping hot. We ordered a vegetable balti, a chicken tikka dhansak and two nans; the dishes were authentic, delicious and plentiful.Overall an excellent experience, good value for money and friendly, attentive staff.

We had a very nice meal here, the pops and pickles were fresh and delicious. We had two main courses with pilau rice and a nan bread and they were all very good.

Went for a full meal with friends but there were no vegan options and when we left they made a back handed comments about an allergen advice being on the door. Boiled vegetables was offered but not really what you go out for food for. Furthermore, £52 for a round of beers and some popadoms seemed excessive. I would not recommend visiting here if you want a meal with good service, or a reasonably priced meal. STAY WELL CLEAR if you have any dietary requirements. I’m local to Wadebridge and I rather travel then ever go back to the Raj.

Really good range of the general fare starters, but we went straight for the main courses. Chicken Tikka Bhuna was fantastic and I am advised the Jalfrezi was too. Chicken Tikka Main course gets a worthy mention too.

Interesting decor inside for an Indian restaurant but great food. Massive choice and extremely tasty although more expensive than we would normally pay in the Midlands. Good wine choice too. Service was a bit strange and could be a bit more refined ~ otherwise we really enjoyed it.

This was the first time we’d eaten at The Raj and we weren’t disappointed. The food was absolutely gorgeous and full of flavour. Sometimes Indian food can be just ‘spicy hot’ but here our food had the great balance of heat but also really tasting the different flavours.The restaurant was relaxed and busy but we never felt rushed at all. The service was good, and we felt very welcome. I’d definitely recommend The Raj and for us (although we have an Indian restaurant in our hometown) we’d rather make the trip here the next time we want an Indian meal.

Delicious, well prepared and served in generous quantities. Good value. All the standards you'd expect are on the menu along with one or two more unusual dishes. Everything we had was excellent.

I despaired of finding a good Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi food in this part of Cornwall. Nice location by the river, with easy parking, excellent food and good service. Normal dishes you would expect, but some I have never seem. We are in Cornwall most years, so glad to have found a place that meets the standards we are fortunate to be used to.

When visiting Cornwall we always enjoyed eating at this establishment. However, when we visited today we were very disappointed with the quality of the food. It looked like it should be very tasty but lacked any depth of flavour. Spices were considerably faint and the food was cooked extremely quickly without taking any time to truly cook in the flavours of the curries.

Looking forward to eating at this place, but disappointed. The place was not busy, 2 staff members working, appeared sloppy in their manner, slammed plates down, very curt and rude manner. One staff member was coughing all over our food as he placed it down. The food was tasteless, and expensive. Could not recommend this place at all.
